To set up SoftEther for gaming, run SoftEther VPN Server on an always-on Windows, Linux, macOS, FreeBSD, Solaris, or other supported computer, create a Virtual Hub and player accounts, make one listener port reachable (usually TCP 443 or 5555), then configure each SoftEther VPN Client with the server hostname, port, hub name, and credentials. Test the actual game route for latency, jitter, packet loss, and disconnects before deciding whether the VPN helps.
A VPN does not automatically lower ping. It can improve a poor ISP route, but it can also add distance, congestion, encryption work, or another failure point. The best results come from a nearby, wired host with adequate upload capacity and a router that can handle the tunnel.
What a SoftEther gaming server does
A SoftEther server creates a private virtual network that players join over the internet. After connecting, their computers receive access to the Virtual Hub and to whatever resources you expose through SecureNAT, routing, or a bridged local network. This is useful when a game supports LAN discovery, when friends need to reach a privately hosted game, or when you want a controlled network instead of opening separate game ports for every participant.
SoftEther VPN Server is software rather than a dedicated appliance. It runs on supported desktop and server operating systems, so an old but reliable computer, a small server, or a virtual private server (VPS) can host it. The project also provides an official Docker image. A container needs the NET_ADMIN capability and explicit port mappings; pin a specific image version instead of relying on the moving latest tag.

The server is the meeting point for the players. It does not guarantee that game traffic will take a shorter route. Each client first reaches the VPN host, and traffic then travels from that host to the game or to another player. Selecting the host location and measuring the resulting path matter more than the VPN brand or protocol name.
Choose where to host the server
Home-hosted computer
A home host is convenient when the machine is already powered on and the players are near your internet connection. Use Ethernet where possible, reserve the computer’s local IP address in the router, disable sleep, and make sure the host can upload continuously while the game is running.

- Advantages: no separate VPS bill, direct access to your home LAN, and complete control of the hardware.
- Risks: consumer upload limits, changing public addresses, router CPU limits, double NAT, power outages, and an ISP that blocks inbound traffic.
VPS-hosted server
A VPS is often the practical choice when the home ISP uses carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), will not forward inbound ports, or has an unreliable upload path. Pick a data-center region close to the players and, when possible, close to the game server. A distant VPS can make every player’s route worse even if it is powerful.
- Advantages: usually reachable on a public address, stable power and connectivity, and predictable placement near a player group.
- Trade-offs: recurring hosting cost, provider bandwidth limits, more operating-system maintenance, and less direct access to your home LAN.

Check the route before committing
Choose two or more candidate hosts if you can. From each location, record in-game latency, jitter, packet loss, and disconnect frequency during the hours you normally play. A host with a slightly higher idle ping can feel better if it avoids evening congestion or packet loss.
Install SoftEther and secure the base system
- Prepare an always-on system. Apply operating-system updates, set a static or reserved local address on a home network, enable a firewall, and turn off sleep. On a VPS, create the instance in the selected region and restrict provider-level firewall rules to the ports you actually use.
- Install SoftEther VPN Server. Use the official project distribution for your operating system, or the official Docker image. For Docker, grant
NET_ADMIN, map the selected listener port, and specify a version tag. Do not deploy an unpinnedlatestimage when you need repeatable updates. - Open the server configuration tool. Connect to the local server administration interface and set a strong server administrator password. This password controls configuration; it is not a shared player password.
- Verify the service starts automatically. Reboot once and confirm that the SoftEther service or container returns without manual intervention. A gaming VPN that disappears after a power failure is not useful.
Keep the host’s operating-system account, SoftEther administrator account, and player accounts separate. Back up the configuration after each known-good change and store the backup offline or with restricted permissions.

Create the Virtual Hub and player accounts
Create a dedicated hub
- In the server configuration tool, choose the option to create a new Virtual Hub.
- Give the hub a short, recognizable name. Clients must enter this name exactly, including capitalization where the client interface preserves it.
- Set a strong hub administrator password. Do not give this password to ordinary players.
Add individual users
- Open the hub’s user-management screen and create one account per player.
- Use long, unique passwords; never reuse the server administrator password.
- Remove accounts when someone no longer needs access. Individual accounts make that possible without changing every player’s credentials.
A hub by itself does not define what the clients can reach. Choose either SecureNAT for a simple routed network or a local bridge/routing design for more direct LAN integration.
Choose SecureNAT or a bridged/routed LAN
SecureNAT: the simpler option
SecureNAT provides a software-based virtual gateway and DHCP service inside SoftEther. It is the easiest starting point when players only need to reach one another or a game hosted within the VPN. Enable it in the Virtual Hub’s management settings, then use the address range it assigns to verify that connected clients can communicate.
- Quick to configure and does not require attaching the hub to a physical Ethernet segment.
- Useful for a private game subnet with minimal changes to the home router.
- Its throughput depends on the host’s CPU and the SoftEther process, so test under game load.
Local bridge or routed access: deeper LAN integration
A bridge connects the Virtual Hub to a physical network interface; routed access uses explicit routes between the VPN subnet and the LAN. This can help when a game relies on local-network discovery or when clients must reach several LAN services. It also increases the blast radius of a mistake: a poorly restricted bridge can expose printers, file shares, management panels, or other home devices to every VPN user.
- Use a dedicated interface or VLAN when possible.
- Define only the routes and firewall rules the players need.
- Test discovery and game traffic separately; a successful VPN login does not prove that broadcast-based discovery crosses the design.
Start with SecureNAT, switch to bridging or explicit routing only when the game requires LAN behavior that SecureNAT cannot provide.

Use one listener first. In the server configuration, confirm which ports are enabled and whether another application is bound to the same port. On a home router, forward the selected TCP port to the host’s reserved local IP address. On a VPS, allow the port in both the VPS provider’s firewall and the operating-system firewall.
Port 443 can be convenient on networks that permit HTTPS-like traffic, but using it does not disguise the VPN as ordinary web browsing or guarantee that a captive portal will pass it. Port 5555 is a sensible default when the client networks are unrestricted. Port 992 is an alternative, not a requirement to open all three.
Understand the optional L2TP/IPsec ports
SoftEther’s specification lists UDP ports 500 and 4500 for its L2TP/IPsec function. Those ports are relevant only if you deliberately configure clients to use L2TP/IPsec; they are not required for a standard SoftEther VPN Client connection to a Virtual Hub. Opening unnecessary ports increases exposure, so enable them only for a defined compatibility need.
Use Dynamic DNS and NAT Traversal behind a router
SoftEther VPN Server includes built-in Dynamic DNS and NAT Traversal functions. Dynamic DNS gives the server a stable SoftEther hostname even when the home public address changes. NAT Traversal can create a punched path from a server on a private address behind NAT.

Treat these features as reachability aids, not a guarantee. Some ISP-grade NAT, symmetric NAT, corporate firewalls, and managed routers will not permit the required inbound or punched traffic. Explicit port forwarding may still be needed, depending on the router and the connection mode.

- Enable the server’s Dynamic DNS function and record the assigned hostname.
- Enable NAT Traversal if the server is behind a home router and the feature is appropriate for your network.
- Test from a device on a different internet connection, such as a mobile hotspot. A test from inside the same LAN can succeed through local routing while external clients remain unable to connect.
- If the external test fails, reserve the host’s LAN address and forward one selected TCP listener port. Check whether the ISP uses CGNAT; if it does, a normal inbound forward may never reach your router.
Do not publish the server administrator interface to the internet just to make player access work. Expose the VPN listener, keep administration restricted, and use account-level access control.
Configure each gaming client
The SoftEther client connection requires four pieces of information: the server’s Dynamic DNS hostname or public address, the selected listener port, the Virtual Hub name, and the user’s credentials.

- Open the client connection manager and choose Create New VPN Connection.
- Enter the Dynamic DNS hostname or public address in the server field.
- Enter the exact listener port chosen on the server: 443, 992, or 5555.
- Enter the exact Virtual Hub name.
- Enter the player’s individual username and password.
- Save the connection, connect, and confirm that the client receives an address from SecureNAT or the routed LAN design.
If the client reports that the server cannot be reached, first check the hostname and port from outside the home network. If it authenticates but cannot see the game, verify the hub name, the assigned VPN address, host and game firewall rules, and whether the game depends on broadcasts that your chosen topology does not carry.

Prefer a short, stable physical path
Place the server near the players and, when relevant, near the game’s region. Keep the host wired rather than on congested Wi-Fi. Avoid double NAT; two routers performing address translation complicate forwarding and can interfere with traversal.
Enable and test UDP acceleration
SoftEther documents UDP acceleration that can use a direct UDP channel or UDP hole punching when available. It can reduce the overhead of carrying latency-sensitive traffic through a TCP-only path. Availability depends on NAT and firewall behavior, so compare a controlled game session with acceleration enabled and disabled rather than assuming it always helps.

Size the host and router
SoftEther’s manual warns: “If the performance of this hardware is insufficient, your VPN network speed will also suffer a significant speed reduction.” CPU saturation, low router throughput, and a limited upload link can produce jitter or packet loss even when the nominal internet speed looks high. Watch host CPU, memory, and interface utilization while several players are connected.
Measure the game path, not just the login
- Record idle and in-game ping.
- Measure jitter during busy periods.
- Track packet loss and short disconnects, not only average latency.
- Compare a direct game connection, a home-hosted tunnel, and a VPS-hosted tunnel when those options are available.
A VPN adds an endpoint and processing step. It lowers ping only when the resulting route is better than the direct route; otherwise it raises latency. The official SoftEther materials do not publish a universal game-specific ping improvement figure.
Home versus VPS, SecureNAT versus bridge, and port choices

Troubleshoot the common failure modes
Clients cannot connect at all
- Confirm the Dynamic DNS hostname resolves to the current public address.
- Confirm the client port matches an enabled server listener.
- Check the home-router forward or VPS/provider firewall rule.
- Test from outside the server’s LAN.
- Check for CGNAT or double NAT. Move to a VPS if the ISP prevents inbound reachability.
Connection works, but the game is invisible
- Verify every client joined the same Virtual Hub.
- Check that each client received a VPN address and that host firewalls allow the game.
- Use the game’s direct IP or join method if it relies on LAN broadcasts.
- Switch from SecureNAT to a deliberately configured bridge or routed design only when discovery requires it.
Ping is high or unstable
- Compare the VPN route with a direct connection from the same player and time period.
- Move the server region closer to the players or game server.
- Use Ethernet, remove double NAT, and check for upload saturation.
- Inspect host and router CPU utilization.
- Test UDP acceleration; NAT or firewall restrictions may prevent its direct path.
The tunnel is fast for one player but collapses with several
Check the host’s CPU and upload ceiling, the router’s VPN throughput, and the VPS bandwidth policy. A project-level statement of “1-Gbps-class high-speed throughput performance” is a capability claim, not an independent gaming benchmark; real throughput depends on hardware, encryption, topology, and traffic patterns.
The server stops after a reboot
Verify the SoftEther service or container has an automatic restart policy, that its configuration volume is persistent, and that the firewall rules are restored. Reconnect one test client after every maintenance reboot.
Security checklist before inviting players
- Use unique, long passwords for the server administrator, hub administrator, and every player.
- Expose only the listener port required by your chosen client method; do not open UDP 500 and 4500 unless using L2TP/IPsec.
- Keep the host operating system, SoftEther installation, and Docker image version maintained.
- Restrict bridge or routed access to the minimum LAN addresses and ports.
- Back up the SoftEther configuration securely and test restoration on a spare system.
- Remove inactive player accounts and review connected sessions periodically.
- Do not treat NAT traversal as a security boundary; authenticate every user and maintain host firewalls.
A repeatable validation plan
- Connect one client from an external network and verify authentication, assigned address, and access to the intended game host.
- Add a second client and test a private match or LAN session.
- Run the same session with the host under realistic CPU and upload load.
- Record ping, jitter, packet loss, and disconnects for the direct route and the VPN route.
- Test the chosen listener from the networks your players actually use; a port that works at home may be blocked at school, work, or a hotel.
- Change one variable at a time—server region, SecureNAT versus routing, listener port, or UDP acceleration—then repeat the measurements.
Keep the configuration that produces the most stable game sessions, not merely the lowest idle ping. If every measured VPN path is slower or less reliable than direct play, the correct gaming setup is not to use the tunnel for that game.
