The reliable way to run SkyWars is to use Minecraft Java Edition with a Bukkit-compatible server such as Paper, then install a version-matched SkyWars plugin, WorldEdit and (for protected areas) WorldGuard. Build a resettable floating-island arena, define every player and spectator spawn, configure chests and win rules, and test the entire match loop with a non-operator account before inviting players.
There is no universal SkyWars setup command: plugins differ in dependencies, supported Minecraft versions and arena workflows. Treat the plugin’s release documentation as part of the installation, not as an optional reference.

Use a dedicated Minecraft Java Edition server running a Bukkit API implementation. Paper is the preferred starting point because WorldEdit’s documentation recommends it over Spigot for server use; Spigot is also compatible. A vanilla server cannot load Bukkit plugins such as WorldEdit, WorldGuard or a Bukkit-based SkyWars plugin.
- Server software: Paper or Spigot for the exact Minecraft version you intend to run.
- SkyWars plugin: a release that explicitly supports that Minecraft and server version.
- WorldEdit: the Bukkit build matching your server, for constructing or importing the map.
- WorldGuard: a matching build if you need protected lobby, portal or permanent map regions. WorldGuard requires the Bukkit version of WorldEdit.
- Dependencies: install every library named by your chosen SkyWars plugin. Depending on the project, that can include MinigamesLib, Vault, ProtocolLib or Slime World Manager.
- Backups: keep an untouched arena world or schematic so a damaged map can be restored.
Do not assume that a plugin supporting one Minecraft release will work on another. Minecraft, Paper or Spigot, the SkyWars plugin and each dependency form one compatibility set.

Choose a SkyWars plugin and match its generation
SkyWars plugins do not share a standard configuration format. Two documented generations illustrate why you should choose the plugin before creating commands or folders.

The table is a compatibility warning, not a recommendation of one project over another. Select a maintained release whose page names your Minecraft and Paper version. Never combine commands, configuration files or dependency assumptions from different plugin generations.
Install the server and plugins safely
- Install the matching Paper or Spigot server. Start it once and accept the EULA when required. The first start creates the world, configuration and plugin directories.
- Stop the server completely. Copying or replacing plugin files while the server is running can leave partially written data.
- Prepare the plugins directory. Place the version-matched SkyWars JAR and every dependency named by that release in
plugins. Include the Bukkit builds of WorldEdit and WorldGuard when you use them. - Start the server again. Read the startup console from beginning to end. A dependency load error, unsupported API warning or duplicate plugin usually needs to be fixed before you create an arena.
- Confirm generated data. The SkyWars plugin should create its configuration, and WorldGuard should create its per-world configuration after startup. Stop the server before making manual file changes, then restart to apply them unless the plugin documents a safe in-game reload.
Keep one copy of the original JARs and a dated backup of the world folders, plugin configuration and arena schematics. A backup made after a broken reset is not a clean recovery point.
Install and use WorldEdit
WorldEdit is useful for shaping islands, copying a finished map and restoring a known-good arena. It runs on Java dedicated servers and is available on Bukkit-based stacks.
- Install the WorldEdit build that matches your Paper or Spigot version.
- Restart and check the console for a successful load rather than relying only on the presence of the JAR.
- Build the map in a dedicated arena world or import a map into that world.
- Save a clean source copy before allowing matches. Keep either an untouched world backup or a schematic that contains every permanent island, bridge and structure.
Design the map around the number of slots your plugin supports. Include floating player islands, a central island or middle area if your rules use one, bridges or routes that players can build toward, and a clearly defined void boundary. Remove accidental blocks below the playable area: they can become unintended landing platforms or make void elimination inconsistent.

Install WorldGuard and protect permanent areas
WorldGuard requires a Bukkit API server such as Paper or Spigot and the Bukkit version of WorldEdit; it will not run on vanilla Minecraft.

- Place the version-matched WorldGuard JAR in
pluginsalongside its WorldEdit dependency. - Start the server once so WorldGuard creates its per-world configuration files.
- Define regions for the main lobby, the arena waiting area, portals or signs, spectator space and any permanent map structure that players must not alter.
- Set protection flags appropriate to each region. The lobby normally blocks unauthorized block breaking and placing; the active arena must still permit whatever temporary block interaction the SkyWars plugin is designed to manage.
- Test overlapping regions and priorities in a staging world. A broad lobby region with the wrong priority can override a smaller area, while an arena-wide deny flag can prevent the plugin’s temporary blocks or reset process from working.
Protecting the lobby and protecting an active arena are different jobs. Keep the lobby permanently safe, but do not apply a blanket rule to the match that defeats building, chest interaction or the plugin’s cleanup routine.
Build the arena and its locations
Create a separate lobby
Use a lobby location outside the combat map. Players need a reliable place to arrive, choose a game and return after elimination or victory. If the plugin supports both a global lobby and per-arena waiting lobbies, decide which behavior you want before setting locations.
Plan player slots and modes
Create one spawn for every player slot, not merely one spawn for each island you happen to build. Decide whether the arena is solo or team-based according to the plugin’s supported modes. Team mode requires a defined number of players per team and enough starting positions for every team allocation.
For a newer implementation that documents the setup syntax, a solo arena can be created with /sw setup arena create only <world_name> <arena_name>. Its team form accepts players per team. Use the exact syntax from your installed release rather than adapting this command to an unrelated plugin.

Add spectator and post-game destinations
Set a spectator location when the plugin supports spectators. It should be outside the playable islands and protected from interference with the next round. Also choose where a player goes after the game ends. Some implementations return a player to the location from which they joined; a repository describing one implementation treats queueing from any world and returning players to their original location as desirable behavior. Preserve that behavior when the setting is available, or configure an explicit post-game lobby.
Keep a resettable source
SkyWars permanently changes an arena through block placement, block breaking, chest contents and dropped items. A clean source world or schematic is therefore part of the arena, not just a backup. Name it clearly, restrict access to it and test restoring it before launch. If the plugin uses world regeneration or schematic pasting, verify that the operation finishes before the next queue opens.
Configure the SkyWars plugin
Complete configuration in this order so later tests have a predictable destination and ruleset.
- Main lobby: Set the server-wide arrival point. In a MinigamesLib-based setup, this is documented as
/sw setmainlobby. - Arena waiting lobby: Set the location where players wait for a particular game. The older command is
/sw setlobby [arena]; newer plugins may expose a setup menu or a different command. - Player spawns: Assign each slot to a distinct island. A MinigamesLib-based plugin documents repeating
/sw setspawn [arena]for each spawn. Check the resulting coordinates and numbering rather than assuming the order is correct. - Spectator and post-game locations: Configure them if the release supports them. Keep spectators away from chests and active players.
- Minimum and maximum players: Set a minimum that allows the countdown to begin and a maximum that matches the number of safe spawns. Do not advertise slots that do not exist in the map.
- Mode and teams: Select solo or team mode and define players per team where required. Run both modes if you intend to offer both.
- Chest tiers and loot: Assign the intended tier to each chest location and set the loot table. Check that every starting island has the expected number of chests and that central chests use the stronger tier only where your design calls for it.
- Refill timing: Configure whether and when chests refill. Test the timer during a real match; a refill that occurs before players can reach the center changes the balance and can indicate a unit or configuration mistake.
- Kits and permissions: Define available kits, their costs if applicable, and the permission nodes that control them. Test with an ordinary player account rather than granting operator status.
- Countdown and win conditions: Set the start countdown, elimination behavior, last-player or last-team rule and winner message. Confirm that a player falling into the void is eliminated according to the rule you selected.
- Join methods: Configure commands, signs or NPCs only if your plugin supports them. Make sure each method points to the intended arena and does not bypass minimum-player or permission checks.
- Economy rewards: Install and configure the required economy dependency before enabling rewards. For the MinigamesLib-based listing, that dependency is Vault; without it, leave economy rewards disabled and test the rest of the game.
Save changes using the plugin’s documented method. Some projects write settings immediately; others require a restart. Avoid generic server reload commands unless the plugin explicitly supports them, because reloads can leave worlds, listeners or dependencies in an inconsistent state.
Run a complete test match
Do not validate an arena by checking only that players can join. Test the full lifecycle with at least one administrator account and ordinary non-operator accounts.

- Join through the same command, sign or NPC that regular players will use.
- Confirm that the correct arena lobby appears and that the countdown starts only at the configured minimum.
- Verify that each player appears at a different intended island and that team members are assigned correctly in team mode.
- Open starting and central chests. Confirm the tier, item quantities and refill behavior.
- Select each permitted kit with a non-operator account. Check that denied kits remain unavailable and that kit items arrive only once.
- Place and break blocks in the areas where the game permits it. Try the same actions in the protected lobby to ensure WorldGuard blocks unauthorized changes there.
- Fall into the void intentionally. Check damage, elimination, spectator transition and the remaining-player count.
- Watch a match through to its winner message. Confirm that the last player or team is recognized and that rewards, if enabled, are issued once.
- Leave during the waiting phase and during a match. Verify the plugin’s intended handling of quitters and that their slot is released.
- Return to the configured lobby or original location after the game. Check that temporary inventory, effects, flight and spectator status are cleared.
- Reset or regenerate the arena, then run a second match. Inspect islands, chests, placed blocks, entities and countdown state for leftovers from the first round.
Check the server console after startup and after both matches. Look specifically for dependency, permission, world-loading, serialization and reset errors. A game that looks correct to players can still be writing a broken arena state in the background.

The plugin does not load
Read the first load error, not only the final cascade of messages. Confirm that the JAR matches Minecraft and Paper or Spigot, that every named dependency is present, and that you installed Bukkit builds rather than versions intended for another server platform. Remove duplicate or obsolete builds before restarting.

Commands are unknown or different
You may be following instructions for another plugin generation. MinigamesLib-based releases use commands such as /sw setmainlobby and repeated /sw setspawn [arena], while newer implementations expose a different setup flow. Use the command list generated by the installed release and do not mix its configuration with an older tutorial.
Only operators can use a feature
Review the plugin’s permission nodes and assign the required node to the intended group. Do not give players operator status as a shortcut. Re-test while logged in as an ordinary account, because operators can hide missing permissions and protection mistakes.
Players spawn together or outside the map
Count the configured spawns, inspect their coordinates in-game and confirm that each spawn is in the correct world. Ensure team mode is not being applied to a solo arena and that the maximum player count does not exceed safe positions.

Players cannot build, open chests or use the void correctly
Check WorldGuard region overlap and priority first. A lobby or arena region may be denying an action that the SkyWars plugin needs. Then inspect the plugin’s own protection, chest and fall-damage settings. Test in a staging world before weakening permanent protection.

The next round contains old blocks or loot
The reset source may be incomplete, the regeneration task may not have finished, or the plugin may lack permission to modify the world. Restore from the clean source, watch the console during reset and prevent the next queue from opening until the reset has completed.
Maintain the server and upgrade deliberately
Back up worlds, plugin configuration and arena schematics before every upgrade. Test a copy of the server first, including a solo and a team match if both modes are enabled. Treat a Minecraft upgrade, a Paper or Spigot upgrade, a SkyWars plugin upgrade and a dependency upgrade as separate compatibility changes, even when they are performed on the same day.
The documented MinigamesLib listing is an older generation with Minecraft 1.8–1.12 testing, while the newer listing uses ProtocolLib and Slime World Manager and a different setup flow. That difference is enough to require a fresh compatibility check rather than a blind JAR replacement. Keep the last known-good server files available so you can roll back if arena loading, permissions or resets fail.
Once the game passes the complete lifecycle test on a staging copy, repeat the join, match, reset and return checks after each configuration change. This discipline prevents a harmless-looking loot or region edit from becoming a public arena outage.
