To make a SkyFactory 4 multiplayer server, download the separate SkyFactory-4_Server_4_2_4.zip archive, run its Forge installation and start scripts with a Java runtime compatible with Minecraft 1.12.2, accept the Minecraft EULA, allocate memory, and have every player install the identical 4.2.4 client pack. Local players can join through the host computer’s local address; internet players also need firewall and router port forwarding.

SkyFactory 4 is a legacy Forge modpack rather than a vanilla server. The current CurseForge listing identifies Minecraft 1.12.2 and version 4.2.4, released December 13, 2021. The dedicated server archive is about 231.3 MB; the roughly 22 MB client ZIP is not a server package.

What you need before installing

Prepare these items before extracting anything:

  • A computer or managed host that can remain online whenever people need to play.
  • Free disk space beyond the 231.3 MB download for the generated world, Forge and mod files, logs, temporary files, and backups.
  • A Java runtime compatible with the legacy Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge stack. Do not assume the newest Java installation is suitable; inspect the archive’s supplied scripts and instructions.
  • The exact SkyFactory 4 client build that the server will run: 4.2.4.
  • Administrator access to the server computer if you must install Java, permit the game through a firewall, or edit router settings.
  • A backup location on a different disk or computer if the world matters.

Decide whether you are self-hosting or using a managed host before installation. Self-hosting gives you complete control but leaves hardware, Java, networking, backups, and uptime to you. Managed hosting removes most operating-system and router work in exchange for a recurring plan and less direct control.

Download the correct SkyFactory files

Use the dedicated server archive

Download the official file named SkyFactory-4_Server_4_2_4.zip. It is the server pack for Minecraft 1.12.2 and was uploaded December 13, 2021. Extract it into a new, writable directory used only for this server, such as a dedicated folder on a data drive.

Do not use the client ZIP as a server

Download Approximate size Purpose

SkyFactory 4 client modpack ZIP About 22 MB Client installation for players; it is not a complete dedicated server

A server that starts as ordinary vanilla Minecraft usually indicates that the wrong download was extracted or that the supplied Forge start script was bypassed.

Install Java and prepare the server directory

Choose a compatible Java runtime

Minecraft 1.12.2 and its Forge build are legacy software. Install or select the Java runtime expected by the pack’s scripts and instructions rather than changing to the newest Java release solely because it is newer. If multiple Java versions are installed, confirm which executable the start script calls. A Java mismatch can stop installation, prevent Forge from loading, or produce errors before eula.txt is created.

Extract to a stable, writable path

Use a short path with no permission restrictions where possible. Avoid extracting inside a temporary download directory, a cloud-synchronised folder, or a location that is routinely cleaned. The server will create world data, logs, configuration files, and backups beside the supplied files. Keep the archive itself so you can restore a clean copy if an experiment damages the installation.

Run the supplied installation script

Open the archive’s included instructions and run its installation script from the extracted server directory. The script creates or downloads the Forge server components required by this pack. Run it in the directory that contains the script; launching it from another working directory can place files in the wrong location or make relative paths fail.

Use the Forge server produced by the pack. Do not substitute a vanilla Minecraft server JAR, a different Forge version, or a generic mod-loader installation. Wait for the installation process to finish and read the console for Java, permission, download, or path errors before attempting to start the world.

Accept the EULA and set world-generation options

Complete the first launch

  1. Run the supplied start script once from the server directory.
  2. Let the process stop or finish its initial checks. A normal first run creates files such as eula.txt and the pack’s configuration directories.
  3. Open eula.txt in a text editor and change the EULA setting to the required acceptance value only after reading the Minecraft EULA.
  4. Save the file using plain text and start the server again with the supplied script.

If no eula.txt appears, the command probably did not run in the actual server directory, or Java, permissions, or a path error stopped execution. Read the complete console output rather than creating random files by hand.

Choose the world settings before generation

Review the supplied server.properties before the first successful world creation. Keep the pack’s settings until you understand which values control its skyblock world generation, then select the intended world preset and related options before starting a permanent world. Changing generation settings after chunks exist does not reliably convert an already-created world.

Make a copy of the empty or newly configured directory before the first world is generated. That gives you a clean rollback point if you test an unsuitable preset or configuration.

Allocate memory for Forge and automation

SkyFactory’s modded workload includes automation, machines, chunk loading, and many ticking entities. Memory needs therefore rise with the number of active players and the complexity of their bases; there is no single official RAM requirement that fits every server.

Planning figure How to interpret it
4 GB A practical floor cited by third-party setup guidance, not an official universal minimum
6 GB A starting point commonly suggested for a small group, still dependent on automation, loaded chunks, CPU speed, and the rest of the machine

Set the memory values in the pack’s supplied start or settings files, not in an unrelated vanilla launcher profile. Reserve memory for the operating system and other services; assigning all physical RAM to Java can cause swapping or make the host unresponsive. If the console reports out-of-memory errors, long pauses, or frequent garbage collection, reduce unnecessary chunk loading and automation first, then reassess the allocation and machine resources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When comparing hosting plans, check more than the advertised RAM. Player count, automation density, chunk-loading behavior, CPU performance, storage speed and capacity, and whether automated backups are included all affect the experience.

Start and verify the Forge server

  1. Run the supplied start script from the extracted directory after accepting the EULA and setting memory.
  2. Watch the console while Forge and every mod loads. The first start can take substantially longer than later starts while files and the world are created.
  3. Confirm that the console identifies the Forge 1.12.2 server and the SkyFactory mod set. If it reports a vanilla server, stop it and verify that the complete server pack was extracted and that the script points to the Forge server JAR.
  4. Wait until the console indicates that the server is ready for connections before trying to join.
  5. Stop the process through the server console’s normal stop command. Do not close the window or kill Java while the world is saving.

Always stop cleanly before editing configuration, replacing mods, or copying a live world. A forced shutdown can leave region or player files incomplete.

Install the matching client for every player

Each player must install Minecraft Java Edition with the identical SkyFactory 4 client build, 4.2.4. The server and client must agree on the mod list, mod versions, Forge environment, and pack configuration. A client on another SkyFactory release can be rejected during login even when both installations appear to be SkyFactory 4.

  • Install the pack through the launcher or method used by your distribution.
  • Select the 4.2.4 profile, not an automatically updated or different release.
  • Launch the pack once in single-player so its files and configuration finish installing.
  • Give players the server address only after the server has completed its own Forge startup.

When a connection is refused for a mod or registry mismatch, compare the exact release shown by the client and server before changing Java or networking.

Connect on the same local network

For people in the same home or office network, no internet port forwarding is normally required. On the host computer, find its local IPv4 address and give that address, followed by the listening port, to the other players. The host itself can usually connect through its local address or the loopback address.

Use the port shown in server.properties. Port 25565 is the commonly documented default, but a customized server can listen elsewhere. Permit Java or the selected Minecraft port through the host operating system’s firewall when prompted. Test a second device on the same network before attempting an internet connection; this separates Forge and local firewall problems from router problems.

Make the server reachable over the internet

Allow only the gameplay port

Create an inbound firewall rule for the Minecraft listening port on the server computer. Keep console, file-transfer, remote-administration, and other service ports private. Exposing an administration port is not required for players to join and increases the attack surface.

Forward the router port

  1. Give the server computer a stable local address, preferably through a DHCP reservation.
  2. In the router’s port-forwarding page, create a rule for the external Minecraft port.
  3. Set the destination to the server computer’s local address and the same internal listening port shown in server.properties, unless you intentionally choose different external and internal values.
  4. Save the rule and restart or reload the router if it requires that step.
  5. Have a player outside your home network connect using your public address and the forwarded port. Do not test only from inside the same network; some routers do not support hairpin connections.

Port forwarding works only when the router receives a reachable public address. Carrier-grade NAT can place several customers behind one shared address, preventing ordinary inbound forwarding. If local joining works but outside players always time out after firewall and router checks, ask your internet provider whether you are behind carrier-grade NAT. A managed host or another network solution may be necessary.

Back up before updates or major changes

Stop the server cleanly, then copy the complete world directory and relevant configuration to a separate storage location. Keep dated backup generations rather than overwriting the only copy. Include player data, dimensions, scripts, and configuration that your particular world depends on.

Back up before changing the SkyFactory release, Forge files, Java runtime, world-generation settings, or major mods. The 4.2.4 release notes warn that a tomb-related update can make old tombs unavailable and specifically advise backing up an existing world before updating. If an update causes missing tombs or other corruption, stop testing on the original and restore the pre-update copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A backup is useful only if it can be restored. Periodically copy it to a different disk or machine and verify that the archive opens and contains the expected world folders.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Self-hosting is appropriate when someone can maintain the computer and network. Managed hosting is attractive when you want a provisioned server without manual uploads, router configuration, or operating-system maintenance. Hosted-server documentation describes selecting a supported modpack or server pack, choosing a plan and region, and receiving a ready server; availability, regions, features, and prices can change, so verify them at purchase time.

Consideration Self-hosted server Managed SkyFactory 4 hosting
Initial setup Download, Java, Forge scripts, EULA, memory, firewall, and router configuration are your responsibility. The provider provisions the instance after you select a supported pack and plan; manual server-file upload may not be required.
File and update control Direct access to every file, configuration, backup, and update decision. Control depends on the provider’s panel and policies; check whether custom files and version changes are allowed.
Recurring cost No hosting subscription, but you pay for hardware, electricity, storage, and your own time. Recurring plan charges; exact prices and regions are volatile and must be checked at purchase.
Networking You handle firewall rules, router forwarding, public addressing, and carrier-grade NAT. The provider normally supplies a reachable game address, removing most home-router work.
Backups and recovery You design, store, and test backups. Backup frequency, retention, and restore controls vary by plan; confirm them rather than assuming they are included.
Uptime Depends on your power, internet connection, hardware, and maintenance schedule. Depends on the provider’s infrastructure and service terms; inspect the stated limits and support process.

Whichever route you choose, retain an independent copy of the world. A hosted control panel does not replace a backup you can access if the service is unavailable.

Troubleshoot the common failures

No eula.txt appears

Confirm that the command ran in the extracted server directory. Read the console for a missing or incompatible Java executable, permission denial, malformed path, or script error. Do not assume the server is installed simply because a window opened and closed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server starts as vanilla

Check that you extracted the complete server archive and are using its supplied start script. The script must launch the Forge 1.12.2 server JAR created by the pack. Remove any shortcut or custom command that points to a vanilla JAR.

The server crashes while loading mods

Stop and read the first meaningful error in the console rather than only the final crash line. Verify Java compatibility, that installation completed, and that no files were removed or replaced. Restore a clean server directory from the original archive or a known-good backup before making one change at a time.

Players on the same network cannot join

Test from the host itself, then from another device on the same LAN. Confirm the address, the port in server.properties, and the host firewall rule. A local failure points to the server, Forge, client mismatch, or firewall rather than internet port forwarding.

Internet players time out

First prove that local joining works. Then check the host firewall, the router’s destination address and port, the public address, and whether the internet connection uses carrier-grade NAT. Ensure the server is actually running and listening on the forwarded port when the outside test is made.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The client rejects the connection

Compare the exact SkyFactory release, Forge environment, and mod files on both sides. Every player should be on 4.2.4, and the server must use the corresponding server pack. Reinstalling the client profile is often safer than copying individual mod files from an unrelated release.

The world lags or Java runs out of memory

Check active automation, loaded chunks, player activity, CPU utilization, storage performance, and the memory values in the supplied start settings. Four gigabytes is only a practical planning floor from third-party guidance, and six gigabytes is only a small-group starting point; neither guarantees smooth performance. Reduce unnecessary chunk loading, stop runaway machines, and make sure the host still has memory for the operating system.
