To get mobile data working on a Malaysian LTE Android tablet, use a cellular-capable, unlocked tablet; buy and register a Malaysian prepaid SIM with your passport or accepted identity document; activate it through the carrier’s approved channel; select it as the tablet’s data SIM; and add the carrier’s APN only if Android does not configure it automatically. A Wi-Fi-only tablet cannot connect to a mobile network. If the tablet shows LTE but pages do not load, check registration, activation, the selected data SIM, APN, an active data pass, and local coverage in that order.
What you need before inserting the SIM
Check the hardware and account requirements first. This prevents spending time on APN settings when the tablet cannot use a cellular network or the number has not been provisioned.
1. Confirm that the tablet is an LTE/cellular model
Android tablets are commonly sold in Wi-Fi-only and cellular variants that look nearly identical. Look for a SIM tray, an “LTE,” “4G,” or cellular model designation, or a mobile-network section in Settings. A Wi-Fi-only model has no cellular modem and cannot use a Malaysian SIM for mobile data; it can connect only through Wi-Fi or another device’s hotspot.
The tablet should support the Malaysian carrier’s LTE bands and be network-unlocked. A carrier-locked tablet may reject another operator’s SIM even when its hardware is compatible. The carrier also requires a supported, enabled device and an LTE-capable SIM for LTE service. CelcomDigi’s FAQ specifically states that customers must have a 4G LTE-enabled SIM.

2. Check the SIM size and tablet software
Compare the SIM format shown in the tablet manual or tray with the SIM supplied by the carrier. Most recent tablets use nano-SIM, but do not force a different size into the tray. A properly cut or carrier-supplied replacement is safer than trimming a SIM yourself. If the tablet accepts an eSIM, use it only when both the tablet and the chosen Malaysian plan explicitly support eSIM activation; the physical-SIM procedure below does not activate an eSIM.
Install pending Android and carrier-configuration updates while connected to Wi-Fi. Updates can correct modem, SIM-detection, and network-registration problems before you begin.
Buy the right Malaysian prepaid SIM or data plan
Choose an operator based on coverage at the places where the tablet will be used, not on a nationwide “best” label. Check the operator’s current coverage map and plan page for the exact locations, LTE/5G compatibility, tablet or hotspot support, quota and speed policy, validity, renewal behavior, price, and customer-support options. These details and prices change, so verify them immediately before purchase.
Buy from an official operator shop, an authorised dealer, or the operator’s official app. Keep the SIM pack, receipt, barcode, and any activation instructions. The pack may be needed when an app asks you to scan the SIM barcode or when support has to identify the number.
Physical SIM, plan, and balance are separate
- SIM: identifies the mobile number on the network.
- Registration and activation: link that number to an identity and make it usable.
- Data pass: supplies a quota or allowance for internet access. A registered, activated SIM can still have no internet if it has no active data pass, has expired, or has exhausted its quota.
Registering a Malaysian prepaid number
Malaysian prepaid registration is mandatory. MCMC guidance says all users, regardless of nationality, must register when they subscribe to a Malaysian prepaid public cellular service. That includes Malaysian citizens, foreign workers, and tourists. You cannot lawfully skip registration because the SIM will be used only in a tablet or for a short visit.

Documents to bring
Use the original MyKad where applicable. Non-MyKad customers should bring their original passport or another identity document accepted by the operator and current rules. The name and document details must match the registration information. Keep the document available until activation is confirmed.
Registration channels and changing rules
Registration methods are regulated and can change. Current carrier instructions may require biometric verification, MyDigital ID for eligible self-service registrations, or an authorised-dealer visit for customers who do not have a MyKad. Do not rely on an old travel blog or an unofficial seller’s promise that passport registration can be completed entirely online.

Verify the live requirement at the time of purchase, especially if you are a tourist.
Number limits
CelcomDigi states a limit of five SIMs for MyKad holders and two SIMs for non-MyKad holders, effective 26 August 2026. This is a carrier and regulatory rule reported for that date, not a universal assumption about every operator forever. Confirm the current limit before buying additional lines.
Activate the SIM
Activation is different from simply inserting the card. Follow the operator’s current instructions and wait for confirmation before diagnosing the tablet.

CelcomDigi MyKad prepaid example
- Open the CelcomDigi app and choose Prepaid SIM Activation.
- Complete the identity-verification steps shown in the app.
- Scan the barcode on the SIM pack when prompted.
- Insert the SIM into the tablet.
- Wait for the activation SMS before testing data.
Customers without a MyKad must use an authorised dealer under the current CelcomDigi instructions rather than attempting to bypass the identity flow in the app.

- The carrier confirms registration or activation in the app or by SMS.
- The tablet displays the operator name or a network indicator after restarting.
- The carrier app can show the number and account balance.
If the app rejects the identity document, the barcode will not scan, or no activation message arrives, stop repeating the same form. Take the SIM pack and original document to the operator or authorised dealer so they can correct the registration or provisioning record.
Insert the SIM and select it for mobile data
- Power the tablet off completely.
- Use the supplied eject tool to open the SIM tray. Place the SIM in the outline shown on the tray; the angled corner must match the tray’s angled corner.
- Close the tray without forcing it and power the tablet on.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Network & internet, Connections, or a similarly named section, then open SIMs or Mobile network. Manufacturers use different labels.
- Turn on Mobile data.
- If the tablet has two SIM slots, choose the Malaysian SIM as the Mobile data or Data SIM. Leave calls and SMS on another SIM if you want, but ensure data is assigned to the Malaysian line.
- Restart once after changing the data-SIM selection.
Do not test with Wi-Fi still connected. Android may continue using Wi-Fi and make a broken mobile-data configuration appear to work.
Configure the APN only when automatic settings fail
An APN (Access Point Name) tells Android how to reach the operator’s packet-data network. Many Malaysian SIMs install APN settings automatically. First use the operator’s automatic configuration or Android’s reset option rather than copying an APN from a different carrier.
Reset or add an APN
- Open Settings → Network & internet/Connections → Mobile network (the exact path varies).
- Select the Malaysian SIM, then open Access Point Names or APN.
- Use Reset to default and select the carrier’s existing APN if one is present.
- If the carrier has published a manual APN, choose New APN and enter only the fields it specifies.
- Save the entry, select it with the radio button, and restart the tablet.
Tune Talk’s published example
Tune Talk’s official support instructions publish tunetalk as the APN value. Enter it exactly in the APN field, save and select the entry, restart, and turn Wi-Fi off before testing. The value is carrier-specific: do not use tunetalk for another operator, and do not invent values for fields that the operator has not specified.

APN text is case-sensitive on some Android builds. A trailing space, misspelling, or selecting an old APN can leave the tablet showing signal and LTE while data sessions fail.
Buy or confirm an active data pass
After registration and activation, check that the number has a data allowance. Use the carrier app or its supported USSD menu to purchase a pass, view remaining quota, and check expiry. CelcomDigi documents management through its app or *118#; its pass terms include validity and quota rules that vary by offer.
CelcomDigi’s FAQ describes a 30-day validity cycle for monthly passes in the version accessed in 2026. Treat that as a plan term, not a guarantee that every current pass lasts 30 days. Read the live offer for the exact expiry time, renewal behavior, speed policy after quota use, and hotspot allowance.
A pass can be active but unusable when the tablet is connected to the wrong SIM, the pass belongs to another number, the quota is exhausted, or the validity period has ended. Confirm the number shown in the app matches the SIM in the tablet.
First connection test
- Move to an open location where the operator’s coverage map shows service.
- Turn Wi-Fi off.
- Confirm Mobile data is on and the Malaysian line is selected as the data SIM.
- Wait for signal bars and an LTE/4G indicator. An icon alone does not prove that internet access is provisioned.
- Open a normal webpage and wait for it to load.
- Check the carrier app for balance, pass status, quota, and expiry.
- Restart after any APN, plan, or SIM-selection change.
Test more than one webpage. A single site can be unavailable even when the mobile connection is healthy.

Why the tablet shows LTE but has no internet

Use a controlled troubleshooting order
- Confirm the tablet is the LTE model and is unlocked.
- Check that the SIM is physically detected and correctly seated.
- Verify Malaysian prepaid registration and activation.
- Confirm the right SIM is selected for data and Mobile data is enabled.
- Check the data pass, remaining quota, and expiry in the carrier app or USSD menu.
- Reset APN and enter the operator’s published value if required.
- Turn Wi-Fi off, restart, and test in a covered location.
- Escalate to the operator or authorised dealer if identity verification, activation, or provisioning remains unresolved.
Choosing between operators without guessing
No single operator can be called the best for every Malaysian location from the available evidence. Compare the current official information for the places and use case that matter to you.

Practical checklist for tourists and short stays
- Carry the original passport, not only a photograph or photocopy, when registering.
- Use an official shop, authorised dealer, or official app and retain the SIM pack and barcode.
- Ask when the number and data pass expire; do not assume a tourist purchase remains active for the whole trip.
- Complete activation before leaving the shop when possible, then test with Wi-Fi disabled.
- Keep the carrier app or USSD instructions available so you can check quota without guessing.
- If a non-MyKad registration requires an authorised dealer, plan that visit rather than relying on self-service activation.
When to contact the carrier
Contact support or return to the authorised dealer when the tablet detects the SIM but the carrier cannot confirm registration, the activation SMS never arrives, identity verification fails, or a valid pass remains unusable after the data-SIM and APN checks. Provide the mobile number, tablet model, SIM pack or barcode, approximate activation time, and the exact error message. Avoid sharing your identity document publicly; show it only through the carrier’s secure channel or at the authorised counter.
Once registration, activation, data-SIM selection, APN, and an unexpired pass are all correct, an LTE Android tablet should be able to use Malaysian mobile data wherever the chosen operator provides compatible coverage.

Can I use a Malaysian prepaid SIM in a Wi-Fi-only Android tablet?
No. A Wi-Fi-only tablet has no cellular modem. It can access the internet through Wi-Fi or another device’s hotspot, but inserting a SIM will not add mobile-data capability.
Do tourists have to register a Malaysian prepaid SIM?
Yes. MCMC guidance requires registration for every Malaysian prepaid public-cellular subscriber regardless of nationality, including tourists. Use your original passport or another identity document accepted by the operator.
Is an LTE icon proof that mobile internet is working?
No. LTE shows that the tablet has attached to a radio network, but an active data pass, correct APN, selected data SIM, and completed provisioning are still required.
Should I enter an APN copied from another Malaysian operator?
No. APNs are carrier-specific. Use automatic settings or the exact APN published by your operator. Tune Talk’s published example is tunetalk, but that value should not be used for another operator.
What should I do if my tablet has two SIM slots?
