To set up a Samsung refrigerator ice maker, identify your exact model, connect and check its water supply if required, install and flush the correct filter where applicable, then use the model’s control to turn ice making on. Samsung says initial production can take one to two days. If ice does not appear, check the control, bucket, door seal, water supply, pressure, and filter before trying a reset.

Samsung refrigerator layouts and controls vary, so use the manual for your model before following button, filter, or water-line instructions. The guidance below is based on Samsung Support US and may not apply to every model or region.

1. Find your model and ice maker

Locate the refrigerator’s full model code on its product label, then open that model’s manual. Ice makers can sit in the refrigerator compartment, freezer, freezer door, or another model-specific location; the activation control and reset button vary too. There is no single button sequence that applies to every Samsung refrigerator.

Check the manual to confirm whether your refrigerator needs a household water connection, uses a replaceable filter, and has one or more ice makers. Samsung’s water-line and ice-maker installation guidance and filter guidance can help, but the model manual should determine which parts and steps fit your appliance.

2. Connect the water line if your model requires one

If the refrigerator needs household water and no suitable supply line is present, Samsung says a water-line kit may be needed. Its installation guidance lists common fittings and materials, including 1/4-inch compression nuts, copper or plastic tubing, a ferrule for copper tubing, a compression fitting, and a molded end for plastic tubing. These examples do not guarantee compatibility: check the refrigerator connection and your plumbing before buying or installing parts.

  1. Follow the model manual and the kit instructions to connect the tubing and fittings.
  2. Tighten the compression nut until it reaches the fitting; Samsung cautions against over-tightening.
  3. Turn on the water supply and inspect the connection points for leaks.
  4. If a connection leaks, turn off the main water supply, check the connections, and tighten as needed. Seek qualified plumbing help if you cannot resolve a leak or are unsure how to make the connection safely.

Samsung specifies at least 30 psi for proper ice-maker operation. Its troubleshooting guidance also links insufficient pressure with no ice or small cubes. If the line was recently installed or ice production is poor, check the household supply rather than assuming the refrigerator is faulty.

3. Install the right filter and flush water where applicable

For a dispenser-equipped model that uses a water filter, install the filter specified for that refrigerator. The location and installation procedure vary, so verify the compatible filter and steps in the model manual or Samsung’s water-filter guidance. Do not assume one filter fits all Samsung refrigerators.

Samsung says to dispense one gallon of water before drinking or using refrigerator water on applicable dispenser models. For a new refrigerator with water taste or odor, its separate taste-and-odor guidance recommends dispensing two to three gallons and discarding the first batch of ice. These are distinct instructions for their stated contexts, not a single universal flush amount.

4. Turn on the ice maker

The control depends on the model. Samsung describes these common arrangements, but the manual for your refrigerator provides the exact steps:

  • Most models: Check the Ice Off indicator. It should not be lit when ice production is enabled.
  • Top-freezer models: An Ice On indicator may be used instead; it should be lit for ice production.
  • Family Hub models: Ice-maker controls may be available through Fridge Manager.
  • Compatible connected models: The control may be available in SmartThings.
  • Dual-ice-maker models: Separate indicators may show the status of each maker, even when one button controls them.

Use the model manual to confirm the relevant control and setting. Samsung provides additional ice-maker activation guidance, including model-specific examples.

After enabling a newly activated ice maker, allow one to two days for ice production and discard the first two buckets, as Samsung recommends to help clear impurities from the water line. This is setup guidance, not a guarantee of a particular production rate.

5. Check these things if no ice appears

Before resetting the ice maker, work through the basic checks below. Samsung’s ice-maker troubleshooting guide describes these common causes.

  1. Confirm the ice maker is enabled. Check the indicator or control for your model; a setting that disables ice production is an easy cause to rule out.
  2. Check the bucket. Seat and latch it correctly, and remove objects other than ice. A displaced or obstructed bucket may be detected as full.
  3. Check the door and seal. Make sure the freezer door or ice-maker compartment closes properly. Frost or a poor seal can affect temperature.
  4. Check the water supply. Confirm the household valve is on, the line is connected, and there are no leaks or kinks that would obstruct the supply.
  5. Check pressure and filter condition. Samsung identifies low pressure as a possible cause of no ice or undersized cubes. For dispenser models, its troubleshooting guide uses a flow check of 6 ounces (three-quarters of a cup) in less than 10 seconds. Filter checks or removal are model- and situation-dependent; follow Samsung’s guide rather than treating filter removal as a routine setup step.

6. Reset the ice maker only after basic checks

A test-button reset is a later troubleshooting step, not the first setup action. Button position and procedure vary by ice-maker type. Samsung’s general reset guidance and its reset instructions for a back-of-freezer-door ice maker illustrate why the model manual matters.

  1. Use the manual to locate the Test button. It may be on the side or bottom of the ice maker, and some designs require a cover to be removed.
  2. If the model instructions call for it, remove the bucket and press and hold Test until the unit chimes or moves. Follow the specified procedure, then reinstall the bucket correctly.
  3. If there is no chime and no movement, Samsung’s guidance says to power-cycle the refrigerator for two minutes and try again.

Do not press Test repeatedly: Samsung warns that repeated tests can cause water overflow or jam ice. Its general reset guidance recommends no more than one reset per day. If the reset does not restore operation, or you see a leak or suspect a mechanical problem, consult Samsung support or a qualified appliance technician.
