For the best conventional setup, connect the TV’s HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC port to the soundbar’s HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC) port. Use a suitable High Speed HDMI cable, select the soundbar under the TV’s Sound Output menu, and enable HDMI-eARC Mode and Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) when those options are available. The exact labels and supported features vary by Q-Series generation, TV model, and region, so check both manuals if your ports or menus differ.
What you need before connecting the soundbar
Samsung sells Q-Series soundbars across multiple generations. A Q-Series model may have HDMI ARC, HDMI eARC, optical, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or only some of those connections. TVs also differ in their ports, audio menus, and supported formats. Identify the exact model numbers of both devices and keep their manuals available before you start.
- A TV with a compatible audio output. For the preferred setup, look for a port labelled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC.
- A soundbar port labelled HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC). Do not assume that any HDMI socket on the bar is the audio-return port.
- An HDMI cable. Samsung’s regional guides recommend a cable labelled High Speed or High Speed with Ethernet; Samsung Canada also lists Premium High Speed as suitable. Verify the cable and ports supplied with your devices before buying another one.
- Access to the TV’s Sound settings and the soundbar remote or controls.
Place the soundbar in front of the TV with its speakers unobstructed. Keep the bar connected to power, and turn both devices off while making the first cable connection. This reduces the chance of selecting the wrong input during setup.

Why HDMI ARC or eARC is usually the right choice
HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) sends the TV’s sound back through an HDMI cable to the soundbar. HDMI eARC is the newer version with greater audio bandwidth. It also lets compatible TVs and soundbars exchange control commands through HDMI-CEC, which Samsung calls Anynet+ on many products.

Samsung’s UK connection comparison lists Dolby TrueHD, including uncompressed Dolby Atmos, over HDMI eARC but not over standard HDMI, optical, or Bluetooth. It lists Dolby Digital Plus, including compressed Dolby Atmos, over HDMI eARC and HDMI, but not over optical or Bluetooth. Those are Samsung’s stated connection capabilities, not a promise that every Q-Series bar or TV will decode every format. The source device, streaming service, disc, TV settings, and the exact soundbar and TV models still determine what you hear.
Samsung summarizes its recommendation this way: “Connecting your TV to your soundbar using an HDMI cable will ensure that you receive the best possible audio quality.” For a normal TV-to-soundbar installation, start with ARC or eARC unless one of your devices lacks the required port.
Set up the soundbar over HDMI ARC or eARC
1. Identify the correct ports
On the TV, locate the socket marked HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC. It may be on the rear or side panel and may be numbered, such as HDMI 2. On the soundbar, locate HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC). Some bars have an additional HDMI input for a source device; that is not the port you use for the TV’s audio return.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If your labels do not match these names, consult the manuals for both models. A regular HDMI port without ARC or eARC normally will not send the TV’s built-in audio back to the bar.
2. Connect the HDMI cable
- With both devices powered off, plug one end of the cable into the TV’s ARC/eARC-labelled port.
- Plug the other end into the soundbar’s HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC) port.
- Push each connector fully home. A loose connection can leave the TV unable to detect the bar or can produce intermittent sound.
Use High Speed or High Speed with Ethernet cable as recommended in Samsung’s setup guidance. Premium High Speed is also listed by Samsung Canada. Cable branding alone does not add features that the TV and soundbar do not support; the ports and devices determine whether the link operates as ARC or eARC.
3. Turn on the devices and choose the soundbar input
Turn on the TV and soundbar. On models that require an input selection, set the bar to D.IN. (digital input). Samsung Canada’s ARC procedure says that after a few seconds the display should change to TV ARC. Other Q-Series generations may show a different source name, so use the source indicated in your model’s manual.

4. Select the soundbar as the TV’s sound output
Open the TV’s sound menu and choose the connected soundbar instead of the internal TV speakers. On Samsung TVs, the path is generally Settings → All Settings → Sound → Sound Output, but wording and menu organization vary by model and region. Select the HDMI receiver, soundbar, or a similarly named external-audio option that represents the HDMI ARC/eARC connection.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →5. Configure eARC when both devices support it
For a compatible eARC TV and soundbar, Samsung Canada documents this path: Settings → All Settings → Sound → Expert Settings → HDMI-eARC Mode → Auto. Set the option to Auto rather than forcing a mode your equipment does not support. If the TV has no HDMI-eARC Mode setting, it may support ARC only, may hide the setting until an eARC device is detected, or may use a different menu name.
6. Turn on Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC)
Enable Anynet+ in the TV’s external-device or general-connection settings when available. HDMI-CEC allows compatible devices to coordinate power and volume control. Samsung’s ARC instructions include Anynet+ among the checks for an ARC connection. Some soundbar remotes also have an Anynet or HDMI-CEC control; use the setting described for your model.
7. Test several sources
Play live TV, an app built into the TV, and any external player connected to the TV. Confirm that sound comes from the bar, that volume changes affect the bar, and that the TV does not silently switch back to its internal speakers. If an app offers an audio-format choice, test only formats supported by both devices and the connection.
Choose the correct TV audio settings
After the bar is detected, the TV may expose additional sound controls. Keep the output directed to the external HDMI soundbar. If a digital-audio format menu is available, use a setting your bar and source support; an incompatible bitstream can result in silence even though the HDMI connection is correct.
Do not infer Atmos or another format from the word “eARC” alone. A compatible TV, compatible soundbar, supported source, and appropriate output settings are all required. Samsung’s published comparison describes what the connection types can carry, while the actual result depends on the particular equipment and content.

- BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE: Works with earlier versions to allow for use with a wide range of HDMI-enabled devices
Alternative 1: Wi-Fi and SmartThings
Wi-Fi can be useful when a compatible Q-Series soundbar and TV are on the same home network. It avoids a long audio cable and can integrate with Samsung’s SmartThings controls, but availability is model-dependent.
- Connect the phone to the same Wi-Fi network that the TV uses.
- On the soundbar, select Wi-Fi as the source if the model requires a source selection.
- Open the SmartThings app and add the soundbar. Follow the app’s device-discovery and network prompts.
- On the TV, open the Sound Output menu and select the network soundbar when it appears.
Samsung’s UK instructions state that SmartThings support starts with 2017 soundbars; older models use the Multiroom app instead. Confirm the exact app and supported features on your model’s support page. Samsung also warns that a router using a DFS channel may prevent a soundbar from connecting over Wi-Fi. If discovery fails, temporarily using a non-DFS wireless channel, bringing the bar closer to the router, and updating the bar’s firmware are reasonable checks described in Samsung’s setup guidance.
Wi-Fi audio behavior is not identical across Q-Series generations. If the TV does not list the bar as a network output, use HDMI ARC/eARC or another connection supported by both devices rather than assuming the omission is a fault.
Alternative 2: optical digital audio
Optical is a dependable fallback when the TV has no usable ARC/eARC port or when HDMI-CEC is causing problems. It sends digital audio through a fiber-optic cable, but it does not provide the full format capability of eARC.
- Remove the protective caps from the optical cable if it has them.
- Connect the TV’s Optical Digital Audio Out to the soundbar’s Optical In.
- Turn on the TV and soundbar.
- Set the soundbar source to D.IN., Optical, or the equivalent label for that model.
- In the TV’s Sound Output menu, choose the optical or external-speaker option.
Samsung’s format comparison lists optical as not supporting Dolby Digital Plus, including compressed Dolby Atmos, and not supporting Dolby TrueHD, including uncompressed Dolby Atmos. The exact output can also depend on the TV’s digital-audio setting and the program being played.
Samsung Gulf notes that, for its described setup, Samsung TVs from 2022 onward may require Simultaneous Optical Output. That is a model- and region-specific instruction, not a universal requirement. If your TV has that option and you want sound from both the TV and optical device, follow the setting in your TV’s manual; otherwise, select the soundbar as the sole output.

Alternative 3: Bluetooth
Bluetooth is convenient for a quick connection and avoids cables, but Samsung describes it as potentially lower quality than HDMI or optical. It is better suited to casual listening than to a format-focused home-theater setup.
- Put the soundbar into Bluetooth pairing mode. Samsung describes the display as BT PAIRING on supported models.
- On the TV, open the Bluetooth speaker or audio-device list.
- Select the soundbar’s name and confirm pairing.
- Set the TV’s Sound Output to the paired Bluetooth speaker if the TV does not switch automatically.
Pairing labels and menu locations vary widely. If the bar is listed but will not connect, disconnect it from other phones or tablets, return it to pairing mode, and retry from the TV’s Bluetooth list. Bluetooth does not provide the HDMI eARC format capability described in Samsung’s comparison.
Connection comparison
| Method | Audio capability described by Samsung | Cable required | Model requirements | Control and convenience |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI eARC | Samsung lists Dolby TrueHD, including uncompressed Dolby Atmos, and Dolby Digital Plus, including compressed Dolby Atmos. | Yes; use a suitable High Speed cable as specified by Samsung’s guides. | TV must have eARC and the soundbar must have a compatible eARC/ARC TV port. | Supports HDMI-CEC/Anynet+ control when enabled and supported. |
| HDMI ARC | Samsung lists Dolby Digital Plus, including compressed Dolby Atmos, over HDMI. Dolby TrueHD is listed for eARC rather than standard HDMI. | Yes; connect the two ARC-labelled ports. | Both devices need ARC; available formats still depend on the devices and source. | Usually the simplest wired TV setup and can support synchronized control through Anynet+. |
| Optical | Samsung’s table does not list Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby TrueHD support over optical. | Yes; optical digital cable. | Both devices need optical output/input. | Simple and independent of HDMI-CEC, but with fewer format options. |
| Wi-Fi | Not stated as a single format guarantee; capability depends on the compatible TV, soundbar, app, network, and content. | No audio cable, but a working Wi-Fi network is required. | Compatible models and app support; Samsung says SmartThings support starts with 2017 soundbars, while older models use Multiroom. | Can be convenient for network control; DFS router channels may block connection. |
| Bluetooth | Samsung describes Bluetooth as potentially lower quality than HDMI or optical and does not list the HDMI eARC formats for it. | No audio cable. | TV and soundbar must support Bluetooth audio pairing. | Fast for basic listening, but pairing and device switching can be less predictable. |
The table reflects Samsung’s published connection comparison and setup guidance. It is not an independent performance test, and a format shown as possible still requires support from the particular TV, soundbar, source device, content, and settings.

Work through these checks in order. They address the common causes without immediately resetting every device.
Check the ports and cable
- Verify that the TV end is in the port explicitly labelled ARC or eARC, not an ordinary HDMI input.
- Verify that the soundbar end is in HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC), not the bar’s separate HDMI input.
- Reseat both ends and try another known-good High Speed HDMI cable if the TV never detects the soundbar.
Check TV Sound Output
Open the TV’s Sound Output menu and select the external HDMI soundbar. If the TV remains set to TV Speaker, the bar can show an HDMI connection while producing no audio.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck Anynet+ and HDMI-CEC
Confirm that Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) is enabled on the TV. Samsung Canada says Anynet must be on for ARC and suggests toggling the Anynet button on the soundbar remote if ARC has no audio. After changing the setting, turn both devices off and on again, then reselect the soundbar output.

Check eARC mode
If both devices support eARC, confirm that the TV’s HDMI-eARC Mode is set to Auto where Samsung provides that option: Settings → All Settings → Sound → Expert Settings → HDMI-eARC Mode → Auto. If the option is absent, use the model’s manual rather than forcing an unrelated setting.
Check the soundbar source
Set the bar to D.IN., TV ARC, or the source name specified for the model. Samsung’s ARC procedure expects TV ARC to appear after selecting D.IN.; another Q-Series generation may use different wording.
Update and retry
Samsung’s Gulf setup guidance recommends current firmware and retrying the connection when ARC behavior is inconsistent. Update the TV and soundbar through their supported procedures, power-cycle both, reconnect the HDMI cable, and repeat the output selection.
Fix connection-specific problems
The soundbar does not appear on Wi-Fi
- Confirm that the phone, TV, and soundbar are being configured on the intended home network.
- Use SmartThings for supported soundbars; check whether an older model requires the Multiroom app.
- Check the router channel. Samsung reports that DFS channels can prevent a Wi-Fi soundbar connection.
- Update firmware and retry discovery after moving the bar closer to the router.
Optical is connected but silent
- Make sure the optical cable’s protective caps are removed and the plug is fully seated.
- Set the soundbar to D.IN. or Optical.
- Select optical or external audio in the TV’s Sound Output menu.
- If the TV offers a digital-audio format choice, select a format the bar supports.
Bluetooth pairing fails
- Put the bar back into BT PAIRING mode rather than ordinary Bluetooth input mode.
- Disconnect the bar from another nearby phone or tablet.
- Delete an old soundbar entry from the TV’s Bluetooth list and pair again.
- Keep the devices close during pairing, then select the bar as the TV’s output.
When to choose each connection
Choose HDMI eARC
Use eARC when both devices provide it and you want the broadest format path described by Samsung, including Dolby TrueHD and uncompressed Dolby Atmos where the source and equipment support them.
Choose HDMI ARC
Use ARC when the TV or soundbar lacks eARC. It remains the preferred everyday wired connection for compatible devices and can carry Dolby Digital Plus, including compressed Dolby Atmos, according to Samsung’s table.
Choose optical
Use optical when ARC/eARC is unavailable or HDMI-CEC is unreliable. Accept the format limitations and configure the TV and bar for optical output.
Choose Wi-Fi
Use Wi-Fi when your specific TV and soundbar support network audio and you value cable-free placement or SmartThings control. Verify app compatibility and avoid router conditions that block discovery.
