Connect the gaming PC or console directly to a Samsung OLED TV with the right HDMI input, enable Game Mode, and match the source output to the television’s actual port capabilities. For high-refresh play, you may also need Input Signal Plus and a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
Start with your exact TV model and region in mind. Samsung’s HDMI ports, supported resolutions, menu labels, automatic detection, and software features vary by model and year. Read the model’s manual or specification sheet and check the labels beside the HDMI sockets before choosing a port.
What you need before connecting anything
A successful setup depends on four components agreeing on the same signal: the TV model and HDMI port, the PC or console, the game, and the cable. A television may support a feature on one model but not another, or offer a different number of high-bandwidth ports.
- Samsung OLED TV: Confirm the model, software version, region, and the HDMI ports that support your target resolution and refresh rate.
- Gaming source: Check the PC graphics card or console output limits. The source must be capable of generating the resolution and refresh rate you select.
- HDMI cable: Samsung recommends an HDMI 2.1 cable for a console targeting 4K at 120 Hz and a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for its cited high-refresh PC setup. If your existing cable meets that specification, you do not need to replace it.
- Direct connection: Connect the PC or console to the TV first. Add an AV receiver, soundbar, switch, or capture device only after the direct connection works, because intermediate equipment can impose a lower bandwidth limit.
Do not assume that HDMI port 1, 2, 3, or 4 is always the gaming port. Port numbering is not universal. Use the socket marked with a gaming-controller icon or the port identified in your model’s documentation.

Choose the correct HDMI input
For a 4K 120 Hz console
Samsung recommends the HDMI input marked with a gaming-controller icon when connecting a console that targets 4K at 120 Hz. Use an HDMI 2.1 cable for that signal. On newer televisions, more than one port may support the required bandwidth, so verify the labels and specifications instead of relying on the port number.
For a gaming PC
Select a port that supports the resolution and refresh rate you want from the graphics card. If you are trying to use a high-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 mode and the option is missing, you may need to enable Input Signal Plus for that input.
When the TV has several compatible ports
Use any documented port that supports your target mode, then leave the connection there. If you later move the cable, repeat the Input Signal Plus check and confirm the source still reports the same refresh-rate options.

- Power off the source and TV. Turn off the PC or console before changing HDMI connections.
- Connect the HDMI cable directly. Plug one end into the PC graphics output or console HDMI output and the other into the documented gaming-capable HDMI input on the TV. For 4K/120 Hz console use, choose the input with the gaming-controller icon when your model provides one.
- Turn on the TV and source. Select the HDMI input used for the connection. Give the TV a moment to identify the device.
- Enable Game Mode. On many models, open Quick Settings and choose Game Mode > On. Samsung says console recognition normally enables Game Mode automatically, but automatic activation can fail on some consoles. Samsung also states in its Canada guide: “When connecting to a PC, Game Mode will not automatically turn on.”
- Enable Input Signal Plus if necessary. Open Quick Settings > All Settings > Connection > External Device Manager > Input Signal Plus, then select the HDMI input you are using. This expands the input’s signal range and enables HDMI 2.1 features on the connected device where the TV supports them. A console connection may enable the setting automatically.
- Set the source output. In the PC or console display settings, choose a resolution and refresh rate supported by both the source and the specific TV input. Enable HDR or VRR on the source only when the TV, game, and connection support those features.
- Check the result. Confirm that the TV reports Game Mode as active and that the source offers the expected resolution and refresh rate. If your model supports Game Bar, press and hold the remote’s Play/Pause button after Game Mode is enabled to view status information such as FPS, HDR, and VRR.
- Update before deeper troubleshooting. If a supported mode is still unavailable, update the TV software. Samsung’s high-refresh PC guidance also calls for current TV software and a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
Set up a gaming PC
1. Check the graphics card and port
The graphics card must be able to output the mode you want over HDMI. A high-end display setting cannot appear in Windows if the GPU, its HDMI output, or the cable cannot carry it. Check the graphics card documentation and the TV’s specification sheet together.

2. Select the TV input
Connect the PC directly to a compatible HDMI port and select that input on the TV. If the desktop appears but the desired refresh rate is unavailable, continue with the TV settings before changing Windows settings repeatedly.
3. Turn on Game Mode manually
Open the TV’s Quick Settings and choose Game Mode > On. PC connections do not necessarily trigger automatic Game Mode. If the image looks like a normal desktop rather than a low-latency game input, this is the first setting to verify.
4. Turn on Input Signal Plus for the PC port
Go to Quick Settings > All Settings > Connection > External Device Manager > Input Signal Plus. Select the HDMI port connected to the PC. Menu names can differ by model and software version, so use the equivalent HDMI signal-enhancement setting if your TV presents a different label.

Samsung’s model-specific PC guidance
Samsung’s NVIDIA setup guide identifies the 2023 S95C and S90C OLED models as compatible examples for its particular PC and GPU scenario. It says most Samsung TVs manufactured after 2019 support the HDMI 2.1 technology required for the cited RTX 40 Series setup. That statement is not a guarantee for every Samsung model or graphics card; verify your own model, port, GPU, software, and cable.
Set up a console
1. Use the documented high-bandwidth port
For a console targeting 4K at 120 Hz, use the HDMI input marked with a gaming-controller icon when your TV has one. Some newer sets provide multiple suitable inputs. Use an HDMI 2.1 cable, preferably a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.

3. Verify Input Signal Plus
If 4K, 120 Hz, HDR, or another expected option is missing, open Quick Settings > All Settings > Connection > External Device Manager > Input Signal Plus and select the console’s HDMI input. The console flow may enable this setting automatically, but check it when detection fails.
4. Configure the console output
Use the console’s display settings to select a resolution and refresh rate supported by the TV and the connected port. Enable HDR, VRR, or related options only when the console, TV, cable, and game support them. Samsung’s TV-side instructions do not provide the complete menu path for every console, so the exact labels depend on the console model and system software.
What the main gaming settings do
| Setting | Purpose | What must support it |
|---|---|---|
| Game Mode | Uses the TV’s gaming-optimized processing path to reduce input delay. | The TV model and its current software; PC connections may require manual activation. |
| ALLM | Automatically switches the TV to a low-latency mode when a compatible device signals that it is gaming. | TV, source, HDMI connection, and software support for ALLM. |
| Input Signal Plus | Expands the HDMI input signal range and allows HDMI 2.1 features on the connected device where supported. | The selected HDMI input and the TV’s hardware; enable it per port when required. |
| VRR | Adjusts refresh timing to reduce visible tearing. | The TV, source, game, connection, and selected output mode must support the relevant VRR implementation. |
| HDR | Allows compatible games and devices to send high-dynamic-range image data. | TV, source, game, cable, and output settings must all support HDR. |
These settings do not automatically make a game render faster or guarantee a better-looking image. Their usefulness depends on the signal the source can produce and the game can sustain.
Resolution and refresh-rate choices
Choose the highest mode that every part of the chain can maintain reliably. A TV may accept 4K at 120 Hz while a particular game renders below 120 frames per second; conversely, a PC may offer a high refresh rate at a lower resolution when its GPU cannot render 4K quickly enough.

- Backward compatible with earlier versions of HDMI and can be used with any HDMI devices.
Samsung’s 2023 S90C specification sheet is a model-specific example: it lists FRL up to 4K at 144 Hz, a 144 Hz refresh rate, ALLM, and VRR on all four HDMI ports. Those figures apply to the S90C document and should not be treated as a promise for every Samsung OLED television.
| Configuration decision | Check first | Typical limiting factor |
|---|---|---|
| 4K at 120 Hz | TV port, source output, HDMI 2.1 capability, and Ultra High Speed cable. | Non-compatible port, cable, or source output. |
| 4K at a lower refresh rate | TV and GPU/console support for the chosen 4K mode. | GPU performance or a TV input bandwidth limit. |
| 144 Hz on a PC | Exact TV model and port specification, GPU HDMI output, and cable certification. | Model-specific port limits or GPU output limits. |
| VRR or ALLM | TV, source, game, and software support, plus the correct input setting. | Unsupported implementation or disabled Input Signal Plus. |
Use Game Bar to verify the signal
On models that provide Samsung Game Bar, enable Game Mode and press and hold the remote’s Play/Pause button. The bar can show current status information such as FPS, HDR, and VRR. Treat the controls and information as model-year-specific: not every Samsung OLED offers the same Game Bar behavior.
Use the Game Bar as a diagnostic aid rather than as proof that every game is rendering at the selected rate. The source’s display settings and the game’s own performance still determine the actual frame rate.
Troubleshooting common problems
The PC shows a picture but not 120 Hz or 144 Hz
- Confirm that the TV model and the exact HDMI port support the target mode.
- Open Input Signal Plus for the connected port.
- Check that the GPU’s HDMI output supports the required resolution and refresh rate.
- Replace an unverified cable with a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable if the target signal requires it.
- Update the TV software and restart both the TV and PC.
- Return to a lower working mode, then test the target refresh rate again.
Game Mode does not turn on
For a PC, enable it manually through Quick Settings. For a console, power-cycle the console and TV, confirm the correct HDMI input, and check Game Mode manually if automatic recognition failed. ALLM can switch low-latency mode automatically only when the connected device supports and signals it.
4K, HDR, or VRR is missing
- Check Input Signal Plus on the selected HDMI port.
- Verify that the TV model and port support the requested feature.
- Enable the option in the console or PC output settings.
- Confirm that the game supports HDR or VRR; a system-level option alone cannot add support to a game.
- Test a direct TV connection and remove an intermediate receiver, switch, or capture device while troubleshooting.
The screen is blank or repeatedly loses signal
- Return the source to the last known working resolution and refresh rate.
- Reseat both HDMI connectors and test another documented compatible port.
- Try a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for high-bandwidth modes.
- Update the TV software and restart the source.
- Increase resolution or refresh rate one setting at a time so you can identify the point at which the signal fails.
The console is recognized but runs at a lower mode
Check the console’s display output selection, the TV’s Input Signal Plus setting, the cable, and the port marking. Automatic recognition does not override a source setting or a port that lacks the required bandwidth.
How to compare two possible setups
When deciding between ports, cables, or output modes, compare them in this order:
- Supported resolution and refresh rate: Eliminate any configuration that cannot carry the mode you want.
- VRR and ALLM: Confirm that the TV, source, game, and software support the same feature.
- HDR: Check the complete signal path and the game’s support.
- Cable certification: Use the certification appropriate to the bandwidth instead of assuming every HDMI cable is equivalent.
- Port availability: Prefer a documented compatible port and record which input you used so later troubleshooting is easier.
For a PC, add two checks: whether the GPU can output the mode over HDMI and whether the game can render at the selected frame rate. A television’s maximum refresh specification is not the same as a guarantee that every game will reach that frame rate.

Quick Recap
Maintenance and safe defaults
- Keep the TV software current, especially after a new PC GPU or console update.
- Label the cable and HDMI input that work together for your preferred mode.
- After moving the source to another HDMI port, repeat the Input Signal Plus and Game Mode checks.
- Keep a lower, known-working resolution and refresh rate in mind so you can recover from a blank-screen setting.
- Use the model’s manual or specification sheet whenever a menu name or supported port differs from the paths described here.
