Turn on the Galaxy tablet, choose your language, connect to Wi‑Fi, and follow the on-screen setup wizard. During setup you can activate a SIM or eSIM on a cellular model, copy data with Samsung Smart Switch, add a Google account for Play Store access, secure the screen, and optionally sign in to a Samsung account. If you already finished the wizard, you can still use Smart Switch later—there is normally no reason to erase the tablet just to move files.
Before you begin
A few minutes of preparation prevents most setup interruptions. Keep the tablet connected to its charger or make sure it has sufficient battery. Have the Wi‑Fi password ready, along with the sign-in details for any Google or Samsung account you intend to use. If you are transferring from another device, keep that device nearby and charged as well.
- Old device: Charge the Galaxy or Android tablet/phone, iPhone, or iPad that will supply your data. Do not erase it until you have checked the new tablet.
- Network: Know the name and password of the Wi‑Fi network. A hidden network can still be added manually during setup.
- Cellular model: If the tablet supports LTE or 5G, have the carrier-issued physical SIM available, or be ready to follow the eSIM activation instructions. A Wi‑Fi-only model does not need cellular activation.
- Cables: For a wired transfer, identify the connector on the old device and the connector on the new tablet. A USB-C-to-USB-C cable or certain Lightning-to-USB-C combinations may connect directly; other combinations need a USB-OTG adapter.
- External storage: A microSD card or USB-OTG flash drive can be used only when the specific tablet supports that storage method. Samsung notes that microSD support varies by model.
The exact wording and order of screens can differ by Galaxy model, carrier, and software version. Treat the labels below as the normal flow rather than a guarantee that every model shows identical screens.
Follow the first-run setup wizard
1. Power on and select the initial preferences
Press and hold the tablet’s power button until the Samsung logo appears. The wizard first asks for language and other basic preferences. Select the choices you want and continue through the prompts. If a screen offers an accessibility option you need, enable it before proceeding; the available choices depend on the model and software.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Connect to Wi‑Fi
Choose your wireless network from the list, enter its password, and wait for the tablet to confirm the connection. The setup wizard uses this connection for account sign-in, software setup, and any transfer step that requires a network.
If the network name does not appear because the router hides its name, use the option to add the network manually. Enter the network name and the requested security details exactly as configured on the router. If the tablet repeatedly rejects a password, recheck capitalization and special characters on another device before assuming the tablet is faulty.
3. Activate cellular service when applicable
On an LTE or 5G Galaxy tablet, the wizard may ask you to insert a physical SIM. Follow the model’s on-screen instructions for the SIM tray and then continue with activation. If the tablet presents eSIM setup, follow the displayed prompts instead of inserting a physical card.

Contact that carrier if the SIM or eSIM is not recognized, the plan cannot be activated, or the tablet remains unable to connect to mobile data. A Wi‑Fi-only tablet skips this part entirely; do not look for a SIM tray or cellular activation option on a model that was not sold with cellular capability.
4. Choose whether to copy data
The wizard asks whether you want to copy apps and data from another device. Choose the transfer option if you want to start with existing content, or choose the option to set up without copying for a clean tablet.
A clean setup is useful when the tablet is for a different person, when you want to install only selected apps, or when the old device contains clutter you do not want to carry forward. You can transfer compatible content later with Smart Switch, so declining the copy step is not an irreversible decision.

5. Add a Google account
The wizard offers Google sign-in or account creation. A Google account provides access to the Google Play Store and other Google features. Use the account that should own the tablet’s Google services, particularly if more than one person will use it.
If you skip Google sign-in, the tablet can still complete its initial configuration, but Google services that depend on an account will not be ready until you add one. Account data associated with external services is restored by signing in to those services; it is not necessarily copied as a standalone file by Smart Switch.
6. Create a screen lock
Choose a standard lock method when the wizard asks: for example, a PIN, password, or pattern from the options shown on your model. This lock protects the tablet when it is unattended and is also the fallback method for biometric unlocking.
If you choose fingerprint or face recognition, Samsung requires a standard lock method as well. Registering a biometric does not replace the PIN, password, or pattern; the tablet may ask for that method after a restart or at other security checkpoints.
7. Decide about a Samsung account
The setup flow offers Samsung account sign-in or account creation. Samsung associates this account with Samsung app downloads, synchronization with Galaxy devices, and locating the tablet. Sign in if you want those Samsung services, or continue without it if you do not need them yet. You can make this choice during setup without changing the Google account decision.

Choose the right way to transfer data
Samsung Smart Switch supports transfers from Galaxy and other Android devices as well as iOS devices. It offers wireless, wired, and, where supported, external-storage routes. No method is universally fastest or available on every combination of devices; connector compatibility, the amount of data, and the source device determine the practical choice.
| Method | Source devices | Connection and charging | Important limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wireless Smart Switch | Galaxy/Android and iOS sources supported by Smart Switch | Device-to-device wireless connection; Samsung describes an option that lets both devices remain connected to chargers | Requires both devices to stay close and available during the transfer; compatible content varies by source and method |
| Wired Smart Switch | Galaxy/Android and iOS sources when the cable combination is supported | Direct cable connection when possible; otherwise use a suitable USB-OTG adapter | Connector and adapter compatibility matter. Do not force a plug or assume every Lightning, USB-C, or older connector combination works directly |
| External storage | Content stored on a supported microSD card or USB-OTG flash drive | Move the storage device between the old device and tablet as supported | Samsung says not all tablet models support microSD. USB-OTG support and the transferable content also depend on the model and storage device |
| QR quick setup | Some Galaxy devices that support Samsung’s QR setup flow | The old device scans a code displayed by the new tablet; network and account information can be authenticated as part of the process | Not available on all Galaxy devices. After the wizard is finished, returning to this initial QR route requires a factory data reset that deletes the tablet’s current data |
Transfer with Smart Switch during setup
Wireless transfer
- At the setup screen that asks whether to copy apps and data, choose the transfer option and select the wireless Smart Switch route when it is offered.
- Open or confirm Smart Switch on the old device and follow the pairing instructions shown on both screens. Keep the devices close together while they establish the connection.
- Select the categories or items that the wizard makes available. The exact selection depends on the old device, the new tablet, and the transfer method.
- Start the transfer and leave both devices undisturbed until the tablet reports completion. Keeping them connected to chargers is useful for a large transfer; Samsung specifically describes wireless use while devices remain plugged in.
- Continue the remaining setup screens. After the tablet reaches the home screen, open transferred apps and sign in where an app or service requests authentication.
Wireless transfer avoids cable and adapter problems, but it does not guarantee a shorter transfer. A large photo or video library can take considerably longer than a small contact and settings transfer, and the available categories still depend on the source device.
Wired transfer
- At the copy-data step, choose the wired Smart Switch option.
- Check the ports on both devices before connecting anything. A USB-C-to-USB-C cable can connect compatible USB-C devices directly. Certain Lightning-to-USB-C connections can also be direct, depending on the devices and cable.
- If the old device’s cable cannot connect directly to the tablet, attach a compatible USB-OTG adapter. The adapter is an exception for cable compatibility, not a requirement for every transfer.
- Approve any connection or access prompt shown on the old device, then choose the content categories offered by Smart Switch.
- Keep the cable and adapter still while the transfer runs. If the connection drops, reconnect with the correct adapter and restart the transfer step rather than pulling repeatedly on the ports.
For readers buying an accessory, a USB-C OTG adapter is optional and only useful when the existing cable cannot connect directly. Verify the connector on the old device and the tablet before purchasing; an adapter with the wrong port will not solve the mismatch.

External-storage transfer
Smart Switch can use a microSD card or a USB-OTG flash drive where the tablet and source device support that route. Move the storage device according to the prompts and select the content available on it.
Do not assume that a microSD card fits every Galaxy tablet. Samsung explicitly warns that model support varies. Confirm support for the exact tablet before buying a card or planning the entire migration around it. A USB-OTG flash drive is likewise subject to the tablet’s OTG and file-access support.
Understand what Smart Switch can and cannot copy
Smart Switch does not promise an identical clone of every old device. Transferable content depends on the source device and the method used. The categories shown in the wizard are the reliable guide for that particular pair of devices.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Device content: Smart Switch can offer compatible apps and data, but the available selection changes between Galaxy/Android and iOS sources and between wireless, wired, and storage transfers.
- Account-synchronized information: Content synchronized with an external service is restored when that service is added to the new tablet. Samsung gives a Google or Office calendar as an example: sign in to the relevant account so its calendar can synchronize rather than expecting Smart Switch to copy it as an ordinary file.
- App sign-ins: A transferred app may still request its account credentials, security verification, or a fresh download of a compatible version.
- Unsupported or unavailable categories: If Smart Switch does not offer an item, that omission reflects the source, destination, or transfer method. Use the original service’s synchronization or export function when appropriate.
After the transfer, open the categories that matter most—contacts, photos, messages, documents, and calendars—and verify them before wiping or trading in the old device.
Use Samsung’s QR quick-setup route carefully
Some Galaxy devices show a QR quick-setup path. The new tablet displays a code, and the old device scans it. Samsung describes this route as a way to authenticate existing network and account information and begin transfer.
Availability is device-specific; Samsung cautions that not all Galaxy devices support the feature. If the QR option is missing, use wireless, wired, or supported external-storage Smart Switch instead.
If you already completed the initial wizard, do not factory-reset the tablet simply to make the QR screen appear. Samsung states that returning to the initial QR setup flow requires a factory data reset, which deletes the tablet’s current data. Ordinary Smart Switch remains available after setup and is the safer choice for a later transfer.

Finish account and service sign-ins
Open the apps and services you plan to use and complete any requested sign-in. This is especially important for Google or Office calendars and other information that lives on an external account. The data may appear only after that account is added and synchronization is allowed to finish.
Check the security method
Lock and unlock the tablet with the standard method you created, then test the configured fingerprint or face option if you enabled one. Keep the standard method available; biometric setup does not remove it.

Run a small transfer check
- Confirm that the expected contacts are present.
- Open several transferred photos or documents rather than checking only the item count.
- Launch a few transferred apps and note which ones require sign-in.
- Open each calendar account you rely on and verify that synchronization has begun.
These checks identify an account-synchronization issue or an unsupported category while the old device is still available for another transfer attempt.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The Wi‑Fi network is not listed
Use the wizard’s manual add option for a hidden network and enter the network name and security details. If a visible network will not connect, re-enter its password carefully and test that network with another device. The tablet cannot complete online portions of setup until it has a working connection.
The SIM or eSIM will not activate
Confirm whether the tablet is a cellular model and whether the SIM is inserted as the model’s instructions show. For eSIM or plan-activation errors, contact the carrier; Samsung directs users to the carrier for activation help. A Wi‑Fi-only model has no cellular activation step to repair.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The cable does not fit or Smart Switch cannot see the old device
Stop before forcing the connector. Identify both ports, try a direct USB-C-to-USB-C or supported Lightning-to-USB-C connection where applicable, and use a compatible USB-OTG adapter only when a direct connection is not possible. If wired setup remains impractical, switch to wireless Smart Switch.
The QR option is missing after setup
That can be normal: the QR quick-setup feature is not available on every Galaxy device and is intended for the initial flow. Use Smart Switch after setup instead of resetting the tablet. A factory data reset erases current tablet data.
Calendar or other account data is absent
Check whether the information belongs to an external service. Add the relevant Google, Office, or other supported account to the new tablet and allow it to synchronize. Smart Switch may not copy that information directly because it is maintained by the service.
The tablet does not accept a fingerprint or face-only lock
Set a standard PIN, password, or pattern first. Samsung’s setup flow requires that fallback method whenever biometric unlocking is enabled.

A practical setup decision checklist
- Want the fastest start with familiar content? Choose copy during the wizard and use Smart Switch. Select wireless if both devices should remain on chargers and you want to avoid connector issues.
- Have compatible cables and a large transfer? Consider wired Smart Switch, checking whether a direct cable works before adding a USB-OTG adapter.
- Already finished setup? Use Smart Switch afterward. Do not reset the tablet solely to obtain the QR initial-setup screen.
- Prefer a clean tablet? Choose setup without copying, then install or sign in to only the services you need.
- Relying on a microSD card? Verify support for the exact Galaxy tablet first; Samsung says support is not universal.
- Using a cellular tablet? Plan for physical-SIM or eSIM activation and contact the carrier if activation fails.
Once Wi‑Fi or cellular service works, the correct accounts are added, the lock method is tested, and the important data is verified, the first-time setup is complete.
