Set up a Galaxy Tab by connecting it to Wi-Fi, choosing whether to transfer data, signing in to your accounts, and creating a screen lock. Then configure typing or DeX only if your exact tablet supports them, and confirm cellular service with your carrier before relying on it while traveling. Menus and options can differ by model, software, and whether the tablet is Wi-Fi-only or LTE/5G.
Before you turn on your Galaxy Tab
- Charge the tablet with the correct charger and cable for that model; there is no single charger specification established for every Galaxy Tab.
- If it is a cellular model, have your carrier’s SIM or eSIM activation details ready. A physical SIM may need to be inserted; eSIM setup may appear during initial setup or be available later, depending on the tablet and carrier.
- Insert a microSD card now only if your exact model has a slot and you plan to use one.
- If you intend to copy data, keep the old device nearby and charged. Decide whether you will transfer wirelessly, by cable, through iCloud, or using external storage, depending on the source device and options offered.
Samsung’s setup screens can differ between Wi-Fi-only and LTE/5G tablets. For cellular activation questions, follow your carrier’s instructions. Samsung’s Galaxy tablet setup guide describes the initial flow and its model-dependent options.
Complete first-time setup
- Power on the tablet and choose a language.
- Review the terms and privacy or diagnostic choices presented on screen.
- Connect to Wi-Fi when prompted. Wi-Fi is also recommended for Android data copying and restore.
- If the setup flow offers SIM or eSIM activation, follow the instructions for your model and carrier. If activation is not offered, check with the carrier about completing it later.
- Choose whether to copy apps and data from another device or set up the tablet as new.
- Sign in to a Google account or create one. It provides access to Google features, including the Play Store.
- Create a screen lock, then finish the remaining prompts and review the home screen.
A Samsung account is an additional option in the documented setup flow. It enables Galaxy services, syncing with other Galaxy devices, and device-location features. It is distinct from the Google account used for Google features and Play Store access. Samsung’s setup instructions describe both account choices.
Choose what to transfer—and verify what did not copy
Use Smart Switch for supported content
If you are moving from another Galaxy or Android device, or from an iPhone or iPad, use the Smart Switch option offered during setup when it suits your source device. The available method can include wireless transfer, a cable, iCloud, or external storage. Samsung lists contacts, messages, photos, videos, documents, settings, and applications among supported transfer categories, but warns that some content cannot be transferred. Do not assume the tablet is a complete clone
Google notes that Android transfer may not copy every app’s data, every non-Google account, or synced calendars. Data held by Google, Office, or another external service will generally become available when you add and sync the relevant account; it is not necessarily part of the device-to-device copy. Check important apps and cloud services separately after setup. Google’s Android transfer guidance explains these limits.
If you set up the tablet as new, you can still add accounts and install apps later. Before retiring or resetting the old device, verify that the files, messages, photos, and app data you need are accessible on the tablet or in the relevant service.

Secure the tablet and finish basic configuration
Set a lock screen
Create a screen lock during setup rather than leaving the tablet accessible to anyone who picks it up. Samsung says biometric unlocking also requires a standard lock. If you plan to use fingerprint or face recognition, configure it after establishing that standard lock, if your model offers those options.

Set the display and install essentials
Choose light or dark mode, arrange the home screen, and install the apps you need from the Play Store. Check for device and app updates through the Settings and Play Store options available on your tablet. Exact update menus and availability depend on the model and software, so follow the labels shown on the device rather than relying on a universal menu path.

Prepare the Galaxy Tab for work or school
Choose an input method that fits your tasks
For occasional writing, the on-screen keyboard may be enough. Samsung Keyboard settings can include keyboard mode, size, layout, voice input, handwriting, and S Pen-to-text options. The labels and available settings can vary with software version and wireless service provider; search Settings for “Samsung Keyboard” if the menu path differs. Samsung’s keyboard settings guidance covers these options.
If you type for long periods, a compatible Galaxy Tab Book Cover Keyboard is an optional physical-keyboard choice. Compatibility is model-specific: check that the accessory is listed for your exact tablet before buying or relying on it. A replacement S Pen is also tablet-specific. Samsung’s keyboard information describes compatible book cover keyboards, and Samsung’s S Pen guidance says to use a pen intended for the tablet model.

Check DeX support before planning around laptop-like use
Samsung DeX provides a desktop-style interface on selected tablets, not every Galaxy Tab. Support depends on the model and software version. On supported devices, Samsung documents starting DeX from Quick Settings and using the tablet screen, S Pen, a USB or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, or a keyboard cover. Consult Samsung’s DeX compatibility and setup page for your model before treating DeX as part of a work or school setup.
Compatibility details can change with software. Samsung’s current US DeX page says DeX for PC is not supported on models running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later, lists the Tab S9 FE and Tab S10 FE series as Wireless DeX exclusions, and describes newer standalone DeX behavior on supported Android 16/One UI 8 tablets. These are specific, time-sensitive statements—not a guarantee of the same behavior on every tablet or in every region. Check the live support page and your tablet’s software version.

Verify external-display support
Samsung documents wired HDMI and wireless display options for compatible devices. A USB-C connector alone does not establish that a tablet can output video. Confirm both the exact tablet’s display-output support and the display or adapter’s compatibility before purchasing accessories or planning a presentation around an external screen. If your tablet is Wi-Fi-only
Plan to use Wi-Fi and make essential files available offline before leaving. Save any travel-critical documents or other content in the relevant apps while you have a reliable connection, and confirm they open without internet access. The exact offline-download steps depend on the app.
If your tablet supports LTE or 5G
Before departure, confirm with your carrier that the exact tablet model, supported bands, plan, and destination-country service work together. Ask whether you need a physical SIM or eSIM and how activation should be completed. Samsung’s setup guidance establishes that SIM and eSIM handling can depend on the model and carrier; it does not establish international roaming availability, destination-specific eSIM options, or prices. Do not assume cellular capability or service just because another Galaxy Tab has it.

Make account access and important files travel-ready
As practical preparation, check that you can recover your Google and Samsung accounts if prompted, keep the screen lock enabled, and confirm essential files are accessible offline. These are prudent travel checks; connectivity and offline features depend on the tablet, carrier, and apps you use.
