To set up a Galaxy SmartTag2, use a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet running Android 9 or later, sign in to a Samsung account, install or update SmartThings, activate the tag by removing its battery film or inserting its CR2032 cell, and accept the SmartThings pairing prompt. If the prompt does not appear, add the tag manually from Devices → + → Add → Samsung devices → Tag/Tracker, or scan the QR code on the product box. When setup is complete, the tag is listed in SmartThings and its location is available on the SmartThings Find map.
What you need before setting up SmartTag2
SmartTag2 is designed for Samsung’s Galaxy ecosystem. The published setup procedure is not a generic Bluetooth pairing process: the phone or tablet, Samsung account, SmartThings app and SmartThings Find registration all work together.
A compatible Galaxy device
Use a Samsung Galaxy smartphone or tablet running Android 9.0 or later. Samsung’s Gulf support documentation and its Canadian product information both specify Android 9 or newer. Android-version support does not mean that every Galaxy model supports every finding feature; the UWB requirement for Compass View is stricter and is covered below.

A Samsung account and SmartThings
A Samsung account sign-in is required. Install SmartThings from Samsung’s app store or your device’s app store, then update it before beginning. Sign in to the Samsung account you want associated with the tracker. Samsung states that account login and device registration in SmartThings Find are required for Galaxy SmartTag2.
#1 Best Overall
- Find your things with ease: The SmartThings Find app uses Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate and keep track of your stuff
- Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
- Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only
The tag and its battery
SmartTag2 uses one replaceable CR2032 coin cell. A battery is supplied with the product, so a replacement battery is not needed for initial setup. Depending on the package, remove the insulating film from the installed cell or insert the cell before pairing. A tray eject pin is included in the package; you do not need to buy a separate tool.
Samsung sells silicone and rugged SmartTag2 cases separately. A case can make it easier to attach the tag to keys, luggage or a pet accessory, but it is not required for pairing or for SmartThings Find to work.
How do I set up a Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2?
- Prepare the app. Open SmartThings, install any available update, and sign in to your Samsung account.
- Activate the tag. Remove the battery isolation film, or install the CR2032 battery if it is not already fitted. Press the SmartTag2 button once. Samsung says the tag makes a sound when it is ready to be added.
- Accept the detection prompt. Keep the activated tag close to the Galaxy phone or tablet. When SmartThings displays a detection pop-up, tap Add.
- Complete the on-screen setup. Follow SmartThings’ prompts until the registration process finishes. Keep the tag near the phone during this stage and do not remove its battery.
- Verify registration. Open the SmartThings device list and confirm that the tag is shown. Samsung’s Gulf support guidance says that, once paired, the tag is listed in SmartThings and its location appears on the SmartThings Find map.
Menu labels can vary slightly by country, language and SmartThings version. If the labels on your screen differ, look for the equivalent device-add or Samsung-device option rather than treating the difference as a pairing failure.

A missing detection prompt is not a dead end. After activating the tag and opening SmartThings, use the manual route:
- Open SmartThings and select Devices.
- Tap the + button.
- Choose Add.
- Under Samsung devices, select Tag/Tracker.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to finish registration.
Samsung also documents a package-QR alternative. In SmartThings, go to Devices → + → Scan QR code, then scan the QR code printed on the SmartTag2 product box and complete the displayed steps. This option is useful when automatic discovery does not start, provided you still have the box and the tag has been activated.
How do I connect SmartTag2 to SmartThings Find?
There is no separate cable or second Bluetooth pairing stage after SmartThings registration. The connection is established when the tag is added to SmartThings under your Samsung account. To confirm it:
- Open SmartThings and check that SmartTag2 appears in the device list.
- Open SmartThings Find and check that the tag is represented on the map.
- Use the available finding controls in SmartThings Find when you are looking for the item carrying the tag.
SmartTag2 communicates locally with a Galaxy phone or tablet over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Samsung Canada lists a maximum BLE connection range of up to 120 metres. That is a manufacturer maximum under favorable conditions, not a promise of continuous contact or an exact map position. Walls, drawers, furniture, a vehicle body and other obstacles can reduce the effective range and location accuracy.

What happens outside direct Bluetooth range?
When the tag is not within direct range of your own Galaxy device, offline finding can use other participating Galaxy devices in Samsung’s Galaxy Find Network. Those devices can help relay an approximate location to SmartThings Find. The network does not guarantee an immediate update, a precise position or uninterrupted tracking; its usefulness depends on nearby participating devices and the surrounding environment.
Basic finding versus Compass View
Basic SmartThings Find registration, map location and ordinary tag-finding functions do not require UWB. Samsung’s Compass View is a separate proximity feature that can provide directional guidance when the necessary hardware and software are present.
| Feature | Device requirement | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Basic SmartThings Find | Compatible Galaxy phone or tablet, Android 9 or later, Samsung account and SmartThings registration | Map-based location and ordinary finding functions through SmartThings Find |
| Compass View | UWB-enabled Galaxy smartphone running Android 11 or later | Directional proximity guidance; availability depends on the operating system, connected device and country |
Do not assume that every Galaxy phone on Android 11 supports UWB. The phone must include UWB hardware, and Samsung says Compass View availability can vary by country and connected device. Samsung Japan describes UWB camera/AR finding at about 10 metres or less, but the actual distance varies with obstacles and the compatible phone.
SmartTag2 features you can use after pairing
Lost Mode with NFC
SmartTag2 supports Lost Mode. You can register a message and contact information in advance; someone who finds the tagged item can tap the tag with an NFC-capable phone to view those details. Samsung Canada says the finder’s phone needs NFC reading capability and internet access for the registered information to be displayed. NFC viewing does not replace the SmartThings Find map and does not make the tag a standalone cellular tracker.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Unknown-tag and left-behind alerts
Samsung Japan documents SmartThings Find settings for notifications about unknown tags and alerts when a tag is left behind. The exact switches and menu wording can vary by region and app version. Review SmartThings Find notification and safety settings after setup if you want warnings about an unfamiliar tracker traveling with you or about an item separated from your phone.
Range, battery and water-resistance specifications
The figures below are Samsung specifications or manufacturer estimates, not independent test results. Conditions and regional pages differ, so treat them as planning guidance rather than guarantees.
| Specification | Samsung-stated value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| BLE connection range | Up to 120 m | Samsung Canada maximum; walls, drawers, cars and other obstructions can reduce range and accuracy. |
| Battery | Replaceable CR2032 | One cell is supplied with the product; it is not rechargeable. |
| Battery life, standard use | Up to 500 days | Samsung Canada internal laboratory estimate using simulated typical use and the included battery. Actual life varies with usage, phone model and battery manufacturer. |
| Battery life, power-saving mode | About 700 days | Samsung Japan’s estimate; typical use is described there as about 500 days. |
| Water resistance | IP67 | Laboratory submersion in up to 1 metre of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. Samsung advises against beach, pool and soapy water use. |
| UWB camera/AR finding | About 10 m or less | Samsung Japan figure; actual distance depends on obstacles and the compatible device. |
IP67 resistance can diminish with wear. Do not interpret the rating as permission to use SmartTag2 in salt water, chlorinated pool water or soapy water. If the tag becomes wet, dry it before opening the battery compartment or attempting further setup.

Why won’t my SmartTag2 connect?
The tag is not detected
First confirm that the isolation film has been removed or that the CR2032 cell is installed, then press the tag button and listen for the ready sound. Make sure SmartThings is updated and that you are signed in to the intended Samsung account. If automatic detection still does not appear, use the manual add path or the box-QR path described earlier instead of repeatedly waiting for a pop-up.
Setup stops or fails
Samsung’s support guidance recommends retrying when environmental conditions may be affecting connectivity. Move the tag and phone away from dense obstructions and keep them close together during registration. Samsung also notes that performance can degrade when many devices are connected simultaneously. Temporarily disconnecting unnecessary nearby devices and retrying may help, but Samsung presents this as troubleshooting advice rather than a guaranteed fix.
The tag does not power on
Samsung Japan recommends checking both the battery charge and its orientation. If those are correct, its documented restart or force-restart sequence is:
- Remove the battery.
- Press the SmartTag2 button once.
- Hold the button while reinserting the battery.
- Continue holding until the tag sounds; Samsung’s procedure specifies at least seven seconds.
Samsung’s detailed restart page was updated November 21, 2024, and regional instructions can differ. If this sequence does not match the instructions shown for your market, follow the local Samsung guidance rather than forcing the battery compartment.
The map location is old or inaccurate
Check whether the tag is within direct BLE range and whether walls, a drawer, a car or another obstruction is between it and a Galaxy device. Outside direct range, an update depends on the Galaxy Find Network and nearby participating devices. A map pin therefore represents the latest available report, not necessarily the tag’s current position or a continuous live track.

Battery replacement and routine care
When to replace the CR2032
Battery life depends on how often the tag communicates, the connected phone and the battery maker. Samsung’s “up to 500 days” and “about 700 days in power-saving mode” figures are estimates, not a service interval. Replace the cell when SmartThings reports a low battery or when the tag becomes unreliable, rather than waiting for it to stop responding completely.

Replacing the cell safely
Use a compatible CR2032 and observe the polarity markings inside the tag. Keep the replacement away from children and pets; coin cells can cause severe injury if swallowed. Close the battery cover securely after replacement so the tag’s water-resistance design is not compromised. If the tag remains silent after a correctly oriented new cell, use the restart procedure in the troubleshooting section.
What is included, and what is optional?
The SmartTag2 package includes the tracker, an installed or supplied CR2032 battery and a tray eject pin for opening the battery compartment. That means a new owner does not need to purchase a battery or special setup tool before pairing. A replacement CR2032 is a later consumable, not a setup requirement.
Silicone and rugged cases are optional accessories for carrying or attaching the tag. Choose one only if its attachment method suits the item you want to track; the case itself does not improve account registration, BLE range or Compass View compatibility.
A practical setup checklist
- Galaxy phone or tablet running Android 9.0 or later
- Samsung account credentials available
- SmartThings installed and updated
- Battery film removed or CR2032 installed
- Tag button pressed and ready sound heard
- Automatic Add prompt accepted, or manual/QR setup completed
- SmartTag2 visible in the SmartThings device list
- Tag location visible in SmartThings Find
- Lost Mode contact details configured if desired
- Compass View expectations checked against the phone’s UWB hardware, Android version and country availability
Once these checks pass, the SmartTag2 is connected to SmartThings Find. Its practical performance will still depend on BLE range, physical obstructions, battery condition and, when it is out of direct range, the availability of nearby Galaxy Find Network devices.

The Bottom Line
Set up Galaxy SmartTag2 in SmartThings—not through ordinary Bluetooth settings—using a Galaxy device on Android 9 or later, a Samsung account and the supplied CR2032 battery. If discovery fails, manual Tag/Tracker setup or the box QR code should still work. Confirm the tag in SmartThings Find, and remember that 120-metre BLE range, Galaxy Find Network updates, battery estimates and IP67 protection all have real-world limits.
