Yes—you can turn a Ryzen mini PC into a home server, provided the exact model has compatible memory, storage, firmware, and network hardware and supports a 64-bit AMD installation. Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS is a documented example: its amd64 edition supports 64-bit Intel and AMD systems. The reliable process is to identify the mini PC, size it for the services you actually intend to run, back up its data, create bootable USB media, install Ubuntu Server, and apply updates. Do not assume that every consumer Ryzen mini PC has the same BIOS options, drive support, Linux compatibility, or upgrade paths.

What you need to verify before buying or erasing anything

A Ryzen label identifies the processor family, not the complete server platform. Two mini PCs with similar CPUs can differ in memory soldering, available drive bays, firmware menus, network adapters, and vendor support. Record the complete model name, processor model, and revision shown on the case, firmware screen, or purchase record.

Use the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model

Check the vendor’s specifications and support pages for:

  • Supported memory type, maximum capacity, and whether memory is replaceable or soldered.
  • Storage interfaces, slot count, supported drive sizes, and the physical form factors that fit.
  • Network ports and the specific wired or wireless adapters used.
  • UEFI or BIOS options, boot-menu behavior, and any documented operating-system limitations.
  • Firmware updates and the vendor’s instructions for installing them safely.

AMD publishes material about Ryzen Embedded mini-PC solutions, but that category-level information does not validate every consumer Ryzen mini PC. Treat the manufacturer’s model documentation as the authority for your machine.

Confirm the architecture

Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS amd64 supports the 64-bit Intel/AMD architecture. A Ryzen mini PC normally meets that processor requirement, but confirm that the installed firmware and hardware are suitable for a 64-bit operating-system installation. Architecture support alone does not guarantee that every network, storage, audio, graphics, or other device in a particular model will work perfectly under Linux.

Plan the server’s workload before sizing RAM and storage

Write down what the server will run and what data it will retain before selecting memory or a drive. A machine used for one lightweight service has a different requirement from one expected to hold large files, run several services, or host virtual machines. Include the operating system, applications, databases, logs, updates, temporary files, and growth in your estimate.

Ubuntu’s stated installation figures

Canonical’s Ubuntu 24.04 LTS amd64 requirements distinguish minimum installation resources from suggested values:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Resource Minimum for an ISO installation Suggested value How to interpret it
RAM 1.5 GB 3 GB or more These figures describe installing Ubuntu Server, not running a particular home-server workload.
Storage 5 GB 25 GB or more These figures describe the operating-system installation; application and data capacity must be planned separately.

Ubuntu notes that more complex scenarios can require additional hardware. Do not treat 1.5 GB of RAM or 5 GB of storage as a sensible target for several services, virtual machines, or a media-heavy data set. Select capacity from your workload plan and then confirm that the mini PC’s model supports the chosen upgrades.

Separate operating-system space from data space

Decide whether the internal drive will hold both Ubuntu and your data, or whether a second internal drive or external storage will carry the data. A compatible SSD may be relevant, but compatibility depends on the exact mini-PC model. External storage can be useful for data or backups when the workload requires it; the Ubuntu installation figures do not determine a backup capacity or a household’s data-protection design.

Back up the mini PC before changing partitions

Copy any files you care about to another device before starting the installer. Ubuntu’s basic installation guidance warns that partitioning can cause data loss if a mistake is made. Verify that the backup opens and contains the files you expect; a copy that has never been checked is not a dependable recovery plan.

Make a short pre-install inventory

  • Record the current operating system, license or recovery information, and any files that must be retained.
  • Photograph or write down the current storage layout if the mini PC already contains data.
  • Save network details and any firmware settings you may need to restore.
  • Disconnect unrelated external drives so the installer presents fewer opportunities to select the wrong disk.

When Ubuntu asks where to install, identify the target drive by its model and capacity rather than relying only on a generic disk number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Create the Ubuntu Server USB installer

Obtain the amd64 Server installer image for the Ubuntu release you intend to use, and use an image-writing tool to create bootable USB media. A suitable USB flash drive is required if you do not already have one; the documented installation flow does not require a particular brand or capacity.

Prepare the media safely

  1. Download the amd64 Ubuntu Server image for the selected release from Ubuntu’s official distribution channel.
  2. Insert a USB drive that can be erased. Copy anything on it elsewhere first.
  3. Use an image-writing utility to write the installer image to the entire USB device, not merely to a folder on the drive.
  4. Eject the USB drive cleanly after writing completes.

Writing an image normally destroys the existing contents of the USB drive. Keep the original download until the installation succeeds so that you can recreate the media if necessary.

Check firmware and boot behavior on the exact mini PC

Insert the installer USB, then start or restart the mini PC. Use the model’s boot-menu key to select the USB device. The key and menu behavior vary by manufacturer, so follow the vendor’s instructions instead of assuming a universal key or BIOS layout.

Do not apply a generic BIOS recipe

The available documentation does not establish one set of BIOS or UEFI settings for all Ryzen mini PCs. If the USB does not appear, consult the vendor’s boot instructions and the hardware guidance for the Ubuntu release you selected. Avoid changing unrelated firmware settings merely because a guide for another model recommends them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record any setting you change. If the system later stops booting its internal drive, you can return to the firmware menu and reverse the documented change rather than guessing.

Install Ubuntu Server step by step

With the USB selected, Ubuntu’s installer presents an on-screen sequence. Labels can change between releases, so read each screen and confirm the selected disk and network details before continuing.

1. Start the installer

Choose the option to install Ubuntu Server from the USB menu. If the machine returns immediately to its old operating system, the USB was not selected or was not written as bootable media; return to the boot-menu instructions and recreate the media if needed.

2. Choose language and keyboard settings

Select the language and keyboard layout that match the administrator who will maintain the server. Check the layout by entering a few characters if the installer provides a test field; an incorrect layout can make passwords and commands difficult to enter later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Configure networking

Connect the mini PC to the network you intend to use. Ubuntu’s guide describes an attempt to obtain an address through DHCP, but that is not a guarantee for every network or adapter. Confirm the interface and address shown by the installer before proceeding. If no interface appears, stop and consult the mini-PC vendor’s hardware documentation and the Ubuntu release’s hardware guidance.

4. Select the target disk deliberately

Review the drive model and capacity. Choose the intended installation disk and understand whether the installer will erase it or use an existing layout. Because partitioning can destroy data, do not continue until the target is unambiguous and your backup is complete.

5. Create the administrator account and hostname

Enter the requested user information and choose a hostname that identifies the machine on your home network. Use an account name and password you can maintain securely. Keep a written record of the hostname and the account’s purpose without storing the password in plain sight.

6. Complete installation and reboot

Allow the installer to copy the system and finish configuration. When prompted, remove the USB drive before rebooting so the mini PC starts from its internal storage. If the installer reports an error, note the exact message before retrying; repeatedly selecting a different disk or changing firmware settings can make diagnosis harder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply package updates on the first boot

After Ubuntu starts from the installed drive, sign in with the account created during setup. Refresh the package index, then install available upgrades:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

Ubuntu documents these commands for routine package maintenance. Run the first command before the second so the system uses current package metadata. If the upgrade asks for confirmation, review the proposed changes and allow it to finish before powering off.

Confirm the basic installation result

  • Check that the expected hostname is shown and that you are using the intended account.
  • Confirm that the network connection remains available after reboot.
  • Verify that the internal drive is the boot device and that the original data backup remains separate.
  • Record the Ubuntu release and the mini-PC model for future troubleshooting.

Ubuntu installer labels and release requirements can change. If your selected release presents different screens, follow that release’s current documentation rather than forcing the sequence above onto an unfamiliar prompt.

Validate storage before adding services

Do not buy or install an additional SSD until the exact mini-PC documentation confirms its interface, physical size, and capacity support. A drive that fits mechanically may still be unsupported by the model’s slot or firmware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose an internal or external arrangement

  • Internal storage: Keeps the installation and data inside the mini PC, but requires model-specific slot and drive verification.
  • External storage: Can be appropriate for data or backups when the workload calls for it, but its connection, power, and physical protection become part of the server design.

The cited Ubuntu requirements only describe the space needed to install the operating system. They do not specify a capacity for photographs, documents, databases, recordings, or backups.

Decide what to deploy only after the base system is stable

Install services one at a time and measure the effect of each addition against the memory and storage plan you made earlier. The documented material for this setup does not provide deployment instructions for container platforms, virtual-machine managers, home-automation systems, media servers, remote-access software, firewall rules, or backup applications. Those workloads need their own current, service-specific documentation.

Keep the first milestone small

  1. Finish the Ubuntu installation and updates.
  2. Confirm local login, hostname, network connectivity, and available storage.
  3. Add one intended service using that service’s official instructions.
  4. Observe resource use and available space before adding another workload.
  5. Document what changed so you can undo or reproduce the configuration.

This staged approach makes it easier to tell whether a problem comes from the base installation, a hardware limitation, or a newly added service.

Troubleshoot the common setup failures

The USB drive does not appear in the boot menu

  • Recreate the USB with an image-writing tool; copying the ISO file onto the drive is not the same as writing bootable media.
  • Try another USB port if the mini PC has more than one.
  • Use the manufacturer’s documented boot-menu key and firmware procedure.
  • Confirm that the image matches the mini PC’s 64-bit AMD architecture.

There is no universal firmware setting that can be recommended for every Ryzen mini PC. Use the vendor’s model-specific instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The installer starts but cannot see a drive

  • Power off and verify that the installed drive matches the model’s supported interface and form factor.
  • Check the vendor’s documentation for firmware updates or storage-related requirements.
  • Do not repartition another disk just to make the installer continue.

The network is missing or DHCP does not provide an address

Ubuntu’s installer attempts DHCP; it does not promise that every wired or wireless adapter and network will work automatically. Check the cable, switch or router connection, and the adapter listed in the mini-PC documentation. If the hardware is not detected, consult the vendor and the Ubuntu release’s hardware guidance before changing unrelated settings.

The installer warns about partitions or existing data

Stop and recheck the backup and target-drive identification. A warning is an opportunity to avoid irreversible erasure, not a prompt to accept blindly. Disconnecting unrelated drives and comparing model names and capacities can reduce the chance of selecting the wrong disk.

The installed system runs out of memory or storage

Revisit the distinction between Ubuntu’s installation minimums and your workload requirement. The 1.5 GB RAM and 5 GB storage figures are not validated targets for multiple services or large data sets. If the exact model supports an upgrade, add compatible memory or storage; otherwise reduce the workload or move data to a verified external device.

Maintain a usable home server

Keep the model documentation, Ubuntu release information, backup location, hostname, and account ownership together in your maintenance notes. Apply package maintenance regularly with the documented sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade commands, and read the release documentation when installer labels or requirements change.

Before making another partition or storage change, create or verify a current backup. Before adding a service, confirm that its memory, storage, network, and operating-system requirements fit the mini PC you actually own. This discipline matters more than the Ryzen name on the case: the complete model and the workload determine whether the home server remains reliable.

What this setup guide can and cannot promise

This procedure establishes a practical Ubuntu Server installation path for a 64-bit Ryzen mini PC. It does not certify every consumer model, guarantee a particular adapter or drive, provide power-consumption or sustained-performance measurements, or prescribe a data-protection architecture. Firmware options, cooling behavior, virtualization features, and application compatibility remain model- and service-specific. Verify those details against current manufacturer and Ubuntu documentation before committing valuable data or a complex workload to the machine.
