Set up a robot lawn mower by following the instructions for its exact model and navigation system. First determine whether it uses a physical boundary wire, satellite/GNSS virtual boundaries, or a hybrid of both. Then plan the lawn, position the charging station and any reference equipment, install wires or create the digital map, pair the app, and watch a complete test run before relying on an automatic schedule.

There is no cross-brand set of measurements that is safe to copy. Passage widths, guide-wire distances, satellite coverage, app features, firmware behavior, and safety requirements vary by model and region. Open the current operator manual for your mower before acting on any dimension or wiring instruction.

Identify the mower’s navigation method before installing anything

Read the model label and the current operator manual. The installation path depends on the mower’s navigation hardware and software, not just its cutting width or product family.

Physical boundary-wire systems

A wired mower detects a buried, pinned, or otherwise installed perimeter wire that defines where it may cut. Supported systems commonly use a guide wire as well: the guide wire gives the mower a predictable route back to the charging station, especially in a complicated garden. A wired installation normally involves the station, boundary wire, connectors, stakes or clips, and a guide-wire circuit.

Satellite or virtual-boundary systems

Wire-free models define the lawn in an app while using satellite/GNSS positioning and the model’s other sensors. Depending on the product and region, correction data may come from a cloud network or from a local reference station. Cloud coverage is not the same thing as cellphone coverage, so check the manufacturer’s coverage tool rather than assuming that a phone signal proves the mower will work.

Hybrid arrangements

Some supported wire-free mowers allow wire assistance in difficult areas, such as places with heavy shade. Do not add wire to a virtual-boundary mower unless the manufacturer lists that exact model as compatible. Conversely, do not assume a wired mower can be converted to satellite mapping.

Manufacturer documentation illustrates the differences. Husqvarna publishes separate wired, EPOS/iQ, and AIM procedures for supported Automower models. Segway Navimow publishes model-series manuals and offers different mapping modes on different models. Select the manual for your actual series, region, and current app or firmware version.

Wired and wire-free setup compared

Setup area Wired mower Wire-free or virtual-boundary mower
How the lawn is defined A physical boundary wire, usually with a guide wire on systems that support one. App-defined boundaries based on satellite/GNSS positioning and the model’s navigation system; some models can use hybrid wire assistance.
Main installation work Route the perimeter, isolate obstacles and islands, install connectors, route the guide wire, then test and calibrate. Position the charging station and any antenna or reference station, pair the app, and map the lawn using the model’s supported method.
Important yard constraints Passage width, wire spacing, islands, slopes, separate areas, and the route back to the station. Open-sky visibility, correction-service coverage, reference-station placement, mapped boundaries, and sensor limits.
How mapping develops The mower can navigate from the installed wires; supported AIM models also build a virtual map while operating. Mapping mode and completion time vary by model. Some systems offer a guided walk, while others can map autonomously.
Changing the lawn later Physical wire may need to be exposed, repaired, or rerouted. Boundary or work-area edits may be possible in the app, subject to the model and signal conditions.

Manufacturer pages establish these functional distinctions, but they do not establish a universal winner for accuracy, installation time, reliability, or cost. Treat those as model-specific questions.

Plan the yard before placing the station

Walk the entire property with the mower’s operating area in mind. Make a simple sketch or mark-up of the lawn before installing equipment.

  • Mark every edge the mower should cut and every surface it must not enter.
  • Identify trees, planting beds, ponds, play areas, decorative objects, and other obstacles that need islands or stay-out zones.
  • Note slopes, narrow passages, gates, remote sections, and lawns separated by paths or other surfaces.
  • Decide how the mower can reach every intended area and how it will return to the charging station.
  • Record power-outlet locations and the likely position of any reference station or antenna.

Husqvarna’s layout examples distinguish a simple open lawn from yards with islands, remote areas, slopes, and passages. Use those examples as planning concepts, not as a universal installation drawing. A separate area may require a model-specific secondary-area procedure or may not be reachable at all.

Remove temporary furniture, toys, decorations, hoses, and similar objects before mapping. For supported Husqvarna AIM models, temporary obstacles can become part of the initial map or interfere with its creation. Permanent objects should be handled according to the model’s island, stay-out-zone, or boundary instructions.

Choose and install the charging station

The station is both a power point and a navigation reference. Follow the exact manual for ground level, clearances, cable routing, weather exposure, and the required view of the sky.

Station requirements are model-specific

For the Husqvarna iQ wire-free installation described on its US product page, the station is placed on flat ground with an open sky view, within 30 feet of an outdoor outlet, and with 6 feet of clear space for the mower to reverse. Those dimensions belong to that product-family instruction; they are not a universal rule for every robot mower.

Keep the station where the mower can approach without a tight turn or an obstacle immediately in front of it. If the manual specifies a straight approach, preserve that clearance. Secure the station only after confirming that the planned route and power cable work for the complete season.

Reference stations and antennas

A system that uses a local reference station or antenna needs that equipment installed and connected exactly as its manual specifies. Other systems can receive correction data through a network. Coverage is geographic and can change, and Segway’s current documentation calls for a Network RTK coverage check on applicable models. Confirm availability for your address and model before you commit to a wire-free layout.

  1. Assemble and connect the charging station. Place it in the selected location, connect the low-voltage and power components specified by the manual, and leave enough room to complete the wire loop and guide-wire connection.
  2. Lay out the boundary. Trace the lawn edge and any exclusion islands with the approved wire type. Follow the manual’s distance from walls, drops, beds, water, and paved surfaces; those offsets differ by model and edge condition.
  3. Create islands and separate areas. Route the wire around trees, beds, and hazards as shown in the manual. A remote or secondary area may need a separate procedure, a transport step, or may be unsupported.
  4. Install the guide wire where the system requires one. The guide wire must connect back to the charging station and remain part of the same electrical installation. Use the same type of wire as the boundary wire if the manual calls for it.
  5. Connect and secure every joint. Use the specified coupler or connector, protect the joint as directed, and pin or bury the wire so it cannot be caught by the mower or garden tools.
  6. Calibrate and test. Pair the mower, run the guide-wire calibration available in the app or mower menu, and watch it follow the route and dock.

Automower guide-wire dimensions cited by Husqvarna

For the Automower guide-wire instructions cited here, begin at the rear of the charging station, centered under its base plate. Route at least 2 metres (6.5 feet) straight ahead of the station; the Aspire R4 exception is 1 metre (3.3 feet). Connect the far end to the boundary wire with the appropriate coupler.

The same guidance says to avoid sharp angles greater than 45 degrees, keep at least 30 centimetres (12 inches) between the guide wire and boundary wire, and place the guide wire diagonally on a slope. These are Husqvarna Automower instructions, not measurements to transfer to another manufacturer or model.

Passages and slopes need their own plan

For the described Automower installation, Husqvarna recommends at least 2 metres (6 feet 6 inches) between boundary wires for a passage without a guide wire, and 60 centimetres (24 inches) where a guide wire leads through it, with model exceptions. The guide wire in that setup must remain at least 30 centimetres (12 inches) from a boundary wire. Check the exact manual before routing a narrow corridor; a mower that physically fits may still be unable to navigate or return reliably.

Map a wire-free mower

Wire-free mapping is an installation process, not simply a perimeter drive. The app, mower model, correction service, and satellite view determine what you do.

Husqvarna iQ and supported EPOS systems

  1. Set up the charging station and, where required, the local reference station or other navigation equipment.
  2. Place the mower in its charger and use the manufacturer app to pair it over Bluetooth as instructed.
  3. Confirm that the mower has the expected satellite or correction-service status before drawing or recording boundaries.
  4. Use Automower Connect to create the virtual operating boundary and any stay-out areas supported by the model.

Husqvarna describes two correction paths for supported wire-free iQ models: its Cloud network or a local reference station. Cloud availability is not equivalent to cellular availability, and the company says wire may be added in heavily shaded areas on compatible systems. Verify current coverage and model compatibility for your region.

Husqvarna AIM virtual maps

On supported Automower AIM models, the mower builds its map during normal operation. Husqvarna says a map typically takes 1–2 weeks to complete, depending on lawn size and mowing schedule. That is a published estimate for AIM, not a promise that every robot mower needs that long.

During the initial mapping period, allow as much operation as practical and keep temporary obstacles out of the lawn. The map displays the wires, charging station, and mower location. For AIM work areas, include recognizable reference points such as trees, islands, and long wire sections. Husqvarna recommends placing a work-area border at least 1.5 metres (5 feet) outside the lawn so the mower cuts to the boundary wire, and says adjacent work areas should overlap. Those recommendations apply to AIM work areas only.

Segway Navimow mapping

Navimow’s manufacturer guide says the app can provide guided-walk mapping or autonomous mapping on i-Series models. The available modes and controls depend on the exact model and software version. Download the manual for the actual model series, then follow the in-app prompts rather than selecting a generic Navimow procedure.

Pair the app and define operating areas

Use only the manufacturer’s current app and the pairing flow listed for your model. App labels can change with firmware and regional releases.

  1. Install the official app for the mower’s product family and sign in if the manual requires an account.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth or the local connection method requested by the pairing screen.
  3. Place the mower in the charging station when the procedure calls for it.
  4. Complete the mower, station, and reference-equipment pairing before attempting to map.
  5. Name the lawn or work area, draw or walk the boundary, and add stay-out zones where the model supports them.
  6. Save the map, then inspect the displayed station, boundary, mower position, passages, and separate areas.

Do not create a work area that the mower cannot physically reach. For a boundary-wire system, the digital display should agree with the wire loop. For a satellite system, check that the recorded edge follows the intended grass edge rather than a temporary object, poor-signal detour, or an inaccessible strip.

Run a verification test before scheduling automatic mowing

Stay with the mower for its first complete route. The goal is to verify navigation and docking, not to measure cutting performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm that the mower leaves the station in the intended direction.
  • Watch every narrow passage and the transition to any remote or secondary area.
  • Check that islands and stay-out zones keep the mower out of beds, water, play spaces, and other protected locations.
  • Observe a complete return-to-dock. On a wired Automower installation, verify that the mower follows the guide wire and docks after calibration.
  • Compare the app map with the physical yard, including the station, perimeter, and work-area borders.
  • Stop and correct the installation before setting a recurring schedule if the mower crosses a boundary, cannot find a passage, or fails to dock.

When changing the yard later, edit the map or reroute the wire using the model’s manual. A new bed, fence, tree, or paving project can invalidate an otherwise correct route.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

Symptom Checks to make
The mower will not leave the station Confirm station power and the app connection, then check that the mapped or wired exit is clear and matches the manual’s required approach. Do not move the station by guesswork; recheck the model’s placement requirements.
The mower crosses the intended edge For a wired mower, inspect the boundary loop, connectors, and island routing. For a virtual system, review the saved boundary, satellite status, and stay-out zones. Re-map or repair only according to the model procedure.
The mower cannot return to charge Check guide-wire routing, sharp bends, slope placement, and the specified spacing from the boundary wire. Run the manufacturer’s calibration again and observe a full docking attempt.
A narrow passage is ignored or blocked Measure the passage against the exact model guidance, including whether a guide wire runs through it. Some models have exceptions or cannot service a particular corridor.
The virtual map is incomplete For AIM, allow the published 1–2-week estimate according to lawn size and schedule, operate the mower as much as practical, and remove temporary obstacles. For other systems, check whether the selected model supports guided or autonomous mapping and whether correction coverage is available.
Positioning is unstable under trees or beside buildings Check sky view, reference-station or network coverage, and the model’s shaded-area guidance. A compatible hybrid wire arrangement may be available on some systems, but do not add wire without confirmation.

What you may need to buy

A compatible wired installation kit can include boundary wire, guide wire, connectors, couplers, and stakes. Search for a robot lawn mower boundary wire installation kit only after confirming compatibility with the exact mower and wire specification. Owners of wire-free systems may not need any boundary-wire kit.

Replacement blades are listed as optional accessories for some iQ-series mowers, but blades are not required to create the map or complete the initial setup. No universal accessory list or setup cost applies across brands and regions.

What the manufacturer guidance does—and does not—establish

The procedures above are based mainly on manufacturer documentation. They explain how particular mower families expect a station, wire, reference system, app, or map to be configured. They do not provide an independent comparison of accuracy, installation difficulty, value, or reliability, and they should not be read as one cross-brand safety standard.

Before cutting, digging, connecting power, or changing a route, open the current operator manual for the exact model and region. Confirm the app version, firmware, satellite or correction-service availability, dimensions, and local electrical and safety requirements. If those details conflict with a generic guide, the current model manual controls.

Husqvarna describes its guide wire this way: “The purpose of our patented guide wire is to navigate your Automower® robotic lawn mower back to the charging station when necessary, reducing search times, particularly in complex gardens.”

For supported AIM models, Husqvarna says: “Your map typically takes 1–2 weeks to complete, depending on your lawn size and mowing schedule.”
