To run a custom Counter-Strike 2 Retakes server, install a CS2 dedicated server, then add Metamod:Source, CounterStrikeSharp, and B3none’s RetakesPlugin. Upload the plugin release, launch the server once so it creates its configuration file, edit the generated settings and map spawns, and restart. This gives you persistent control over teams, rounds, weapons, maps, and administration. If you only want to play Retakes without operating infrastructure, Valve now offers Retakes in official matchmaking; a community server is for private groups or custom public rules.
Choose between official Retakes and a custom server
Valve added Retakes as an official CS2 game mode on October 23, 2025, supporting Defusal Group Alpha and Defusal Group Delta maps on official matchmaking servers. You can therefore queue for the mode without installing anything or paying for a server. See Valve’s announcement for the exact scope of the official mode: Counter-Strike 2 Update, October 23, 2025.
A self-operated Retakes server is a different product. It is appropriate when you need a persistent address, a password-protected match for friends, custom map pools, administrator control, or plugin-driven rules. You are responsible for the server files, network access, updates, backups, security and availability.

B3none’s installation instructions and release packages are maintained in the cs2-retakes repository. Use a release compatible with your current CS2 and CounterStrikeSharp versions rather than copying random files from an outdated tutorial.

Decide how you will run the server

The OpenCS2 image documents persistent storage and a STEAMAPPVALIDATE environment variable that can validate and redownload server files after customizations. Its deployment notes are at OpenCS2’s CS2 Retake Server repository. A managed-panel workflow is described in this CS2 Retakes setup guide.
Do not choose a server from an advertised slot number alone. The available evidence does not establish a universal CPU, memory, bandwidth or player-slot minimum for every CS2 Retakes installation. Test the actual machine with your intended map and player count, and keep the host geographically close to the people who will play.
Prepare the dedicated CS2 server
1. Create a clean installation
Start with a dedicated-server installation that you can update independently from a desktop CS2 client. Keep the server in its own directory and record the account, operating-system user and service method that will run it. A clean directory makes it easier to distinguish Valve files, Metamod files, CounterStrikeSharp files and RetakesPlugin files when troubleshooting.
- Choose a host with a stable wired or datacenter connection and a location suitable for your players.
- Make sure you can open the game-server port through the host firewall and any upstream router or security group. The exact port and forwarding method depend on your host and launch configuration.
- Give the server process permission to read and write its game directory, because the plugin must create a configuration file on first launch.
- Plan a backup location outside the live server directory before you begin changing configuration.
2. Start the unmodified server once
Launch the dedicated server before adding RetakesPlugin. Confirm that it reaches a usable console, creates its normal configuration directories and can load a standard map. Stop it cleanly. This separates a base-server problem from a plugin installation problem and gives you a known-good rollback point.
Install Metamod:Source and CounterStrikeSharp
RetakesPlugin depends on both layers. Install Metamod:Source into the CS2 game directory first, then install the CounterStrikeSharp package in the location specified by its release. Restart the server after each layer and inspect the console for a successful load before moving on.

- Stop the dedicated server.
- Extract Metamod:Source into the CS2 installation, preserving the archive’s directory structure.
- Apply the Metamod change required by its current CS2 release, if the release notes specify one, and start the server.
- Confirm in the console that Metamod is detected. If it is not, do not continue to RetakesPlugin; correct the base installation first.
- Stop the server again and extract CounterStrikeSharp into the same CS2 installation, preserving paths.
- Start the server and verify that CounterStrikeSharp initializes without a dependency or runtime error.
Version compatibility matters. CS2 updates can require corresponding updates to Metamod:Source, CounterStrikeSharp and plugins. Keep copies of the versions you install and read release notes before replacing a working stack.

1. Pick the appropriate release archive
The recommended RetakesPlugin archive includes preconfigured map spawns, making it the simplest starting point for standard supported maps. B3none also publishes a no-map-configs archive for operators who want to define custom map setups themselves. Choose the first archive unless you have a specific reason to maintain every spawn file manually.
2. Upload the files
- Stop the server.
- Download the RetakesPlugin release from B3none’s repository.
- Extract the archive while preserving its internal directories.
- Upload the extracted contents into
addons/counterstrikesharp/in the CS2 server installation. A managed host may display this asgame/csgo/addons/counterstrikesharp/; use the panel’s actual CS2 game-root path. - Check that the plugin files have not been placed in a duplicated directory such as
counterstrikesharp/RetakesPlugin/counterstrikesharp/. The archive’s folders should merge with the existing CounterStrikeSharp folders.
3. Launch once to generate the configuration
Start the server and wait for CounterStrikeSharp to load RetakesPlugin. The plugin creates its configuration at:
addons/counterstrikesharp/configs/plugins/RetakesPlugin/config.json
A missing config.json immediately after uploading the archive is expected; it is generated during the first successful plugin start. If it does not appear after the server has finished starting, inspect the console and plugin logs for a path, permission, dependency or version error.

Configure RetakesPlugin
Open and back up the generated file
Stop the server before editing config.json, make a backup copy, and use a JSON-aware editor. Preserve quotation marks, commas, braces and the file’s encoding. Invalid JSON can prevent the plugin from loading.
Set the rules your group needs
The generated configuration exposes the plugin’s available settings. Configure the desired teams, round behavior, weapon distribution and other server rules using the names and value types supplied by that release. Do not copy keys from a different plugin version: an option that existed in an older release may be ignored or may cause a parse error in a newer one.
- Teams: Decide how players are assigned to the attacking and defending sides and whether the plugin’s default balancing suits your group.
- Round behavior: Set the retake sequence and the conditions that end a round according to the options present in your generated file.
- Weapons: Adjust the available loadouts only after confirming how the release represents weapon choices. Keep a simple default while validating the installation.
- Maps and spawns: Use the included map configurations for the standard release, or add and test your own spawn data when using the no-map-configs archive.
- Administration: Apply only the permissions and management settings you understand, then test them with a non-owner account.
Save the file, restart the server, and watch the console from process start through the first playable round. A successful load with no JSON or dependency errors is more useful than assuming a setting worked because the file saved.
Validate maps and spawn points
Retakes depends on valid spawn data. A server can load the plugin yet fail to provide a playable round if a selected map has no matching configuration or if custom coordinates are invalid.

- Connect with a small test group and confirm that both sides receive valid positions and equipment.
- Play several rounds on each map you intend to publish, checking bomb location, planting access, defuse access and transitions between rounds.
- If you use the no-map-configs archive, create the required map configuration in the structure expected by that release and test every spawn rather than assuming symmetry.
- Remove maps that fail validation until their spawn data is corrected.
Keep custom spawn files under version control or in your backup set. Map updates and plugin updates can make an old spawn layout unsuitable, so re-test after either change.

Add optional companion plugins only when needed
B3none lists companion plugins such as instant defuse, clutch announcements and instant plant as recommendations, not prerequisites. Install them one at a time after the base Retakes server works.
- Record the exact release and dependency for each addition.
- Restart and test after every plugin so a new error has an obvious cause.
- Remove a companion plugin if it changes the round flow in a way your players do not want.
- Back up the working configuration before experimenting.
More plugins mean more update and compatibility work. A minimal stack is easier to secure and recover.
Make a private server for friends
A private Retakes server uses the same installation; privacy is an access and network decision rather than a separate plugin. Give friends the server address and connection details required by your host, and use the server’s password or access controls if your configuration provides them.
- Choose a predictable map rotation and publish only maps whose spawn data you have tested.
- Restrict administrative permissions to trusted accounts.
- Keep the server process running as a dedicated, non-privileged operating-system user where your host supports it.
- Do not expose unrelated management panels or remote services to the public internet.
- Test joining from outside the host’s local network; a local connection can succeed even when router forwarding or firewall rules are wrong.
Docker deployment considerations
Docker is useful when you want a repeatable deployment and an isolated server process. Follow the image documentation at OpenCS2’s CS2 Retake Server repository rather than inventing a compose layout from an unrelated image.
- Map the container’s server-data directories to persistent host storage. Otherwise, replacing the container can remove configuration, plugins or logs.
- Keep
config.json, map spawn data and backups outside the disposable container layer. - Understand the
STEAMAPPVALIDATEenvironment variable before enabling it. Validation can redownload server files after customizations, so keep plugin and configuration data in the correct persistent paths. - Pin or document image versions, then update during a planned maintenance window.
- Expose only the game ports you need and monitor the host’s disk space, logs and restart behavior.
Managed hosting workflow
Managed hosting trades low-level control for a panel, support and provider-maintained uptime. The documented workflow is straightforward: install Metamod:Source and CounterStrikeSharp, upload B3none’s plugin to game/csgo/addons/counterstrikesharp/, then restart. The provider’s path, file manager and restart controls may differ, so follow its current instructions at the managed CS2 Retakes setup guide.

Before paying, confirm that you can upload custom plugin files, edit the generated JSON, select the required maps, set a password, download backups and change the server location. Ask how the host handles CS2 updates and whether an automatic update can overwrite custom files. Check recurring price, renewal terms, slot limits, backup retention and support response rather than treating a low introductory price as the total cost.
Troubleshoot the first launch
RetakesPlugin does not appear in the console
- Confirm Metamod:Source and CounterStrikeSharp load before checking the plugin.
- Verify that the archive was extracted into
addons/counterstrikesharp/, not a nested duplicate directory. - Check that the plugin release matches the installed CounterStrikeSharp runtime.
- Review file ownership and read permissions.
The configuration file is missing
Restart and wait for a complete startup; the file is generated only when the plugin successfully initializes. If it still does not exist, use the first plugin error in the console or log to identify a dependency, path or permission problem.
The configuration file exists but the server will not load it
- Validate the JSON syntax and restore the last known-good backup.
- Check for a trailing comma, missing quote or an option copied from another release.
- Change one setting at a time and restart after each change.
A map loads but a round is broken
Switch to a map with included spawn data. If that works, the problem is likely the custom map configuration or spawn coordinates. Rebuild and test that map’s spawn file before adding it back to rotation.
Friends cannot connect
- Confirm the server process is listening on the configured game port.
- Check host firewall, router forwarding and any cloud security group.
- Test from an external network, not only from the host’s LAN.
- Verify that the address and port sent to players match the current host assignment.
An update breaks the server
Stop automatic changes if your deployment permits it, save logs and configuration, and compare the CS2, Metamod:Source, CounterStrikeSharp and RetakesPlugin versions. Update the dependency chain deliberately, testing the base server before re-enabling companion plugins.
Operate the server safely after it works
- Back up
config.json, map spawn files, plugin releases and any server-specific configuration on a schedule. - Keep a short change log with the date, old version and new version for every update.
- Subscribe to release announcements for the plugin and its dependencies.
- Test a backup by restoring it to a separate directory or temporary instance.
- Review logs for repeated load failures, unexpected restarts and connection abuse.
- Use least-privilege operating-system and administrator accounts.
- Announce maintenance windows so players know when a restart or update may interrupt a match.
The most reliable upgrade order is: back up, update the dedicated server during downtime, confirm Metamod:Source, confirm CounterStrikeSharp, load RetakesPlugin, then test maps and only afterward re-enable optional companions.
