For a reliable performing arts class stream, first decide whether students need to participate. Use an interactive meeting for feedback and demonstrations; use a one-way stream for a class or performance viewers only need to watch. Then frame the full movement area, test music and speech audio separately, measure upload capacity at the venue, and rehearse the complete setup from a viewer’s device.

Choose the right format for the class

The teaching format determines the platform and production setup. A dance lesson where students ask questions or demonstrate movements needs two-way audio and video. A recital or demonstration watched by an audience can use a one-way stream, with questions handled separately if needed.

Format Best for What to plan for
Interactive meeting Teaching that needs student participation, feedback, or demonstrations Plan how students will speak, be seen, and receive feedback. A broadcast-only workflow does not provide two-way communication.
Public one-way stream Demonstrations or performances viewers watch without participating Audience distribution is simpler, but questions and feedback need a separate channel.

Zoom’s documented broadcast production setup is one-way; additional audio and video processing is needed to support two-way communication. Zoom’s Live Streaming app can send a meeting to services such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitch, or a custom RTMP destination. Configure the destination before the meeting and test the combined workflow if you add streaming to an interactive class. Zoom Live Streaming guidance describes the connection process.

For a custom RTMP destination

You will need the receiving platform’s RTMP URL, stream key, and stream page URL. The receiving service supplies these values. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it publicly, and replace it if it is exposed.

Start with a simple camera and audio setup

Begin with a computer, its built-in camera and microphone, a suitable meeting or streaming platform, and a stable internet connection. Place the camera so the entire teaching area remains visible during representative movements. Check that the microphone captures spoken instructions and the relevant instrument or music source. Add equipment only when a specific limitation calls for it.

When a webcam is enough

A built-in or USB webcam is a sensible starting point for a small, straightforward class. It avoids extra signal connections, though its position, lens coverage, and microphone pickup may not suit a large room or full-body movement.

When you need a capture device

If you use a production camera or switcher with HDMI or SDI output, the computer may need a compatible capture device to receive its video signal. A capture device is not required for every camera. Zoom’s broadcast equipment overview gives HDMI and SDI capture hardware as examples for an existing production setup, alongside monitoring headphones, a line-level audio feed, and a USB mixer; these are examples, not a required shopping list. See Zoom’s professional audio and broadcast setup guidance.

For an external microphone or instrument

Use an audio interface or USB mixer when you need to route an external microphone or instrument feed into the computer. Select that device as the platform’s microphone input, check that its signal is not clipping, and use headphones where needed to prevent acoustic feedback. Test the sound on a second device rather than relying only on the levels heard in the room.

Set audio for music as well as speech

Standard meeting audio processing is designed to make speech easier to hear. Noise suppression and echo cancellation can also remove or alter musical detail. If music or instruments matter, test Zoom’s Original Sound for Musicians or another appropriate music mode with the actual instrument, room, microphone, and playback volume. Music-preserving settings can also pick up more room noise, so compare them with standard processing before class. Zoom documents high-fidelity music and stereo options, subject to hardware and settings, in its Original Sound for Musicians guidance.

Live music between participants has extra constraints

Zoom’s Live Performance audio profile is intended to reduce audio latency for coordinated music among participants, but it is not a guarantee of concert-grade synchronization over ordinary internet connections. Zoom’s current guidance specifies that all participants must enable the mode, each input device must support 48 kHz, and Ethernet is recommended. It works in Meetings, not Webinars; no more than five users can enable it; it is not supported above 50 meeting participants; and Zoom cloud recordings do not capture audio while it is active. Check Zoom’s current documentation before relying on this mode, and test with the actual participants and instruments.

Set upload capacity and stream quality together

Measure sustained upload speed at the place the stream will originate. A speed test elsewhere—or a download-speed result—does not establish how much upload capacity is available during class. Set the encoder bitrate below the usable capacity and leave room for network variation and other activity.

Workflow or setting Published figure How to interpret it
YouTube encoder video bitrate, 1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265; 14 Mbps for H.264 YouTube’s recommended video bitrates, not minimum internet-plan speeds or upload-speed guarantees. Codec and stream settings matter.
YouTube encoder video bitrate, 720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265; 8 Mbps for H.264 Recommended video bitrates; test against sustained upload capacity and leave headroom.
Zoom SRT upload guidance, 1080p at 30 fps 6 Mbps recommended upload speed Specific to Zoom’s SRT guidance; do not treat it as a universal requirement for other workflows.
Zoom SRT upload guidance, 720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps recommended upload speed Specific to Zoom’s SRT guidance.
Zoom SRT network headroom Roughly 20–30% Zoom recommends reserving this capacity for retransmissions in its SRT guidance.

YouTube’s encoder recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the current YouTube Help encoder settings for your chosen output. The bitrate is the stream’s video data rate, not proof that an internet connection can sustain it reliably.

For Zoom SRT, Zoom recommends keeping total stream bitrate comfortably below measured upload capacity and reserving roughly 20–30% headroom for retransmissions. Its SRT figures apply to that workflow. See Zoom’s SRT guidance rather than applying those figures to other platforms or protocols.

Choose Ethernet when practical

A wired Ethernet connection avoids some variability of Wi-Fi and is recommended for higher-demand performance audio. It cannot compensate for an inadequate internet service. If Wi-Fi is your only option, test from the actual room and at the time of class, reduce resolution or bitrate if the connection struggles, and avoid other heavy network use during the stream. Zoom notes that Live Performance audio has higher network requirements and recommends Ethernet.

Rehearse the complete class from the viewer’s side

  1. Configure the platform and destination. Confirm camera and microphone permissions, select the intended devices, and set up the meeting or streaming destination. Keep any RTMP stream key private.
  2. Check framing with movement. Perform the movements, gestures, or demonstrations that will occur in class. Confirm the full movement area stays in frame and the performer is not obscured.
  3. Test speech and music separately. Speak at normal teaching volume, then play or perform the music at the expected level. Watch for clipping, excessive room noise, or processing that removes musical detail.
  4. Check playback on another device. Join or view from a separate phone or computer, preferably with headphones. This reveals what students actually hear and see, including sync issues.
  5. Run a short end-to-end test. Test with the same type of movement, audio, and network conditions planned for class. Confirm the stream starts correctly and check the platform’s stream-health messages.
  6. Monitor during the session. Keep an eye on stream health and audio meters. If a source is missing or a meter does not move, check the selected device and operating-system permissions before going live.

If you use OBS, its official quick-start guide recommends starting with the Auto-Configuration Wizard, adding video sources, selecting audio devices, checking mixer meters, and running a short test before the first stream.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare a fallback and protect the class

  • Keep a simpler meeting or alternate connection ready in case the main stream becomes unstable.
  • Tell students where to rejoin if the stream drops, and provide a way to receive essential instructions if video is unavailable.
  • Test the backup route before class; an untested fallback may fail for the same reason as the primary setup.
  • Use only music and recorded material you have permission to stream. A live class or performance can still involve copyrighted compositions, recordings, or other protected material; confirm the relevant rights and platform rules before broadcasting.
  • Do not assume that a technically successful broadcast will satisfy every platform policy. Review the destination’s current rules for copyrighted material and reused content, especially when using recorded music or pre-recorded video.

Troubleshoot common live-stream problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Stream lags, buffers, or drops Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating, or other devices are consuming bandwidth Measure upload at the venue, reduce resolution or bitrate, use Ethernet if available, and pause other heavy network activity. For SRT, follow its specific headroom guidance.
Music sounds muffled, distorted, or disappears Speech-oriented noise suppression or echo cancellation is altering the music, or the input is clipping Test a music/original audio mode, check the input level, and compare playback from a separate device.
Room noise becomes more noticeable A music-preserving mode is passing more of the room sound Reduce room noise, reposition the microphone, and test the trade-off between music fidelity and suppression before class.
Camera or capture source is missing Wrong device selected, missing permission, or incompatible capture connection Check platform and operating-system camera permissions, reconnect the device, and confirm the source appears before starting the stream.
No audio meter movement Wrong microphone or mixer selected, disconnected input, or permission issue Select the intended audio device, check its connection and input level, and verify microphone permissions.
Students cannot give feedback The class is using a one-way broadcast workflow Switch to an interactive meeting or provide a separate feedback channel; a broadcast destination by itself is not a two-way classroom.
Remote musicians cannot stay synchronized Network delay makes simultaneous performance difficult Test with all participants and the actual network conditions; change the lesson format if the delay is incompatible with the activity.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube class or performance built from uploaded videos rather than a live camera, StreamNeo keeps the channel live from the cloud: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. For an interactive class that needs live camera input or student feedback, use the meeting workflow above instead. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
