For a sandbox driving game, the setup that matters most is the input device’s PC mode, current driver and firmware, and a matching control binding. In BeamNG.drive, a compatible wheel can use steering, separate throttle and brake axes, and optional force feedback; a compatible gamepad can be mapped manually if no preset appears. A racing wheel is not required to play.
This guide is specific to BeamNG.drive because its menu names and support procedures are documented. If you mean another sandbox driving game, use that game’s control and compatibility documentation for its exact paths and supported devices.

BeamNG.drive expects input hardware that the PC can see correctly. Compatibility is determined by the device, its driver, and the mode in which it is connected—not simply by whether a plug fits the computer.
- A Windows-compatible input device: use a wheel that exposes a PC/Windows or DirectInput mode, or a PC-compatible gamepad.
- Current software: install the latest manufacturer driver and firmware before configuring the game. BeamNG’s steering-wheel guidance explicitly says to install the latest drivers and firmware even when the wheel appears to work.
- A direct connection for initial setup: connect the device, power it on if it has a separate power supply, and close other remapping utilities until BeamNG.drive detects the hardware.
- Time to calibrate: a wheel needs a rotation-angle match and pedal-axis check; a gamepad needs its steering axis, throttle, brake, and buttons assigned.
No current hardware price, retail availability, or value ranking is established here. Your existing device may cost nothing extra, while buying a wheel or controller is an optional hardware decision.

Wheel versus gamepad: choose the control method first
Both input types can drive in BeamNG.drive. The practical difference is the amount of setup and the kind of feedback you receive.
| Factor | Gamepad | Racing wheel |
|---|---|---|
| Existing-hardware cost | Nothing extra if you already own a compatible pad; otherwise cost depends on the model and region. | Nothing extra if you already own one; a complete wheel, pedals, and power supply are optional purchases whose prices vary by model and region. |
| Setup effort | Usually connect, let Windows install required software, then check or assign the axes and buttons. | Install driver and firmware, select PC/DirectInput mode, set rotation, match the in-game angle, map pedals, and optionally tune force feedback. |
| Physical feedback | Ordinary button and stick input; no wheel force feedback. | Wheel force feedback is available only when the wheel supports it and the game can access that mode. |
| Compatibility requirements | BeamNG supports PC-compatible gamepads and Xbox controllers. Some console-only controllers need an adapter or software; others will not work. | Use a device with PC/Windows or DirectInput support. Force-feedback support is not promised for every wheel and controller combination. |
| Best fit | Quick driving, limited desk space, or players who want an uncomplicated control scheme. | Players who want continuous steering input, pedals, and optional road or collision forces. |
A wheel is therefore an enhancement, not a prerequisite. The official compatibility material lists tested examples such as the Logitech G29, G920, G923, and Thrustmaster TX Racing Wheel, but that list is not a current buying guide and does not establish that one model is best.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSet up a racing wheel step by step
1. Install the manufacturer’s driver and firmware
- Download the current driver and firmware package from the wheel manufacturer’s support page.
- Install it, restart the PC if the installer requests it, and open the manufacturer’s configuration software.
- Confirm that the software identifies the wheel, pedals, and any shifter or handbrake. If it does not, fix that connection or driver problem before opening BeamNG.drive.
- Put the wheel in its PC/Windows or DirectInput mode when the hardware provides multiple modes. This mode is especially important when you expect force feedback.
Do not skip this step because the steering axis moves in Windows. A generic connection can expose basic input while leaving firmware, pedal separation, or force-feedback features unavailable.

2. Set the wheel’s rotation and pedal mode
- In the manufacturer’s configuration software, choose the highest steering rotation angle the hardware allows for your normal driving profile.
- Note that angle. BeamNG.drive must use the same steering angle so the on-screen wheel and the physical wheel turn together.
- If the driver offers separate pedal axes, enable them rather than a combined accelerator/brake axis. Separate axes allow the game to read throttle and brake independently.
- Apply the settings, leave the wheel connected and powered, and then launch BeamNG.drive.
The exact rotation value is device-specific; there is no single angle that applies to every wheel. A mismatch can look like a faulty steering binding when the real problem is that the software and game are using different ranges.
3. Use a preset or create bindings manually
- Start BeamNG.drive and open Options > Controls > Bindings > Vehicle.
- Check whether the wheel has a detected preset. Some devices work immediately after their driver is installed.
- If a control is missing or the preset is incomplete, click the existing binding for that action to change it.
- Bind the steering axis by turning the wheel through its usable range when prompted.
- Bind throttle and brake to their corresponding pedal axes. Add clutch, handbrake, gear up/down, horn, camera, or other controls only if your hardware and driving style require them.
- Save or apply the changes, then test them in a vehicle before adding more mappings.
The essential set is steering, throttle, and brake. A missing preset is not a reason to abandon the wheel; BeamNG.drive allows manual assignment in the Vehicle bindings page.
4. Check the result in a stock vehicle
Load an official, unmodified vehicle and observe the input response at low speed. Turn the wheel slowly, press each pedal separately, and verify that releasing a pedal returns its axis to rest. Test the full steering range before driving quickly. A stock vehicle removes modifications that can obscure an input problem.

Enable and tune wheel force feedback
Turn force feedback on
- Connect and power the wheel before starting the game, or reconnect it and reopen the controls page if you plugged it in after launch.
- Open the Controls menu from the main or in-game menu using the game-controller pad icon.
- Click the Force Feedback tab at the top.
- Enable force feedback and apply the setting.
Force feedback is optional. A wheel can steer correctly without it, and a gamepad does not gain wheel force feedback merely by being mapped to steering.
Use a stable car while tuning
For initial tuning, BeamNG.drive’s official guidance recommends a rear-wheel-drive car such as an ETK K-Series. A rear-wheel-drive vehicle makes the steering forces easier to interpret. Powerful front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive cars can introduce torque steer while you are adjusting feedback, making it difficult to tell whether a setting or the drivetrain is responsible for the pull.
- Choose the rear-wheel-drive test car and drive slowly on a predictable surface.
- Make one adjustment at a time, then repeat the same turn or low-speed maneuver.
- Look for a wheel that recenters and communicates grip without feeling violently fast or continuously saturated.
- After the basic feel is stable, test another vehicle and normal driving conditions. Feedback is vehicle-dependent, so a setting that feels good in one car is not a universal value.
What to do when impacts feel too violent
If crashes or curb strikes produce excessive force, the official guidance suggests lowering torque in the wheel manufacturer’s configuration software and increasing in-game strength to compensate. Treat that as a tuning approach, not a universal numerical prescription: the safe range depends on the wheel, its driver, your mounting, and your personal comfort. Make changes gradually, keep hands clear of a wheel that can move unexpectedly, and stop if the hardware heats, disconnects, or behaves erratically.

Set up a gamepad or controller
Connect a PC-compatible controller
- Install any required manufacturer driver or configuration software.
- Connect the controller and wait for Windows to identify it before launching BeamNG.drive.
- For an Xbox controller or another PC-compatible pad, verify that the operating system and the manufacturer’s utility show the sticks and triggers responding.
- Open BeamNG.drive and inspect Options > Controls and the hardware-related page or device information available there.
BeamNG.drive supports PC-compatible gamepads and Xbox controllers. Do not assume that every console controller is supported: the official controller guidance notes that some console-only devices require external adapters or software, while others will not work regardless.
Assign the controls
- Open Options > Controls > Bindings > Vehicle.
- Check for an existing controller preset. If one is present, test steering, throttle, brake, and the face buttons before changing anything.
- If the controls are empty or wrong, click the binding for steering and move the left stick or other steering control when prompted.
- Bind throttle and brake to the triggers or axes you prefer. Verify that the game distinguishes the two triggers if you want independent acceleration and braking.
- Assign gear changes, parking brake, reset, camera, and menu controls to buttons that are easy to reach.
- Apply the mapping and test it in an official vehicle at low speed.
Stick steering is naturally less precise than a full wheel rotation, so use the game’s available sensitivity or response options only after the basic axis is recognized. Calibration cannot fix a device that Windows or BeamNG.drive does not detect.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a steering wheel is not working
The wheel is not detected at all
- Close BeamNG.drive, reconnect the wheel, and confirm that the manufacturer’s configuration software sees it.
- Install the current driver and firmware rather than relying on a generic Windows driver.
- Check that the wheel is in its PC/Windows or DirectInput mode, not a console-only or alternate mode.
- Verify power, USB connection, and any separate pedal cable.
- Reopen BeamNG.drive only after the device is visible to the operating system.
If the manufacturer’s utility cannot see the device, in-game rebinding is unlikely to solve the underlying connection problem.

The wheel is detected but steering or pedals are missing
- Open Options > Controls > Bindings > Vehicle and click the existing action to bind it manually.
- Turn the wheel or press the pedal through its full range when the assignment prompt is active.
- In the driver software, enable separate pedal axes if that option exists.
- Compare the wheel’s rotation angle with the angle configured in BeamNG.drive.
- Remove duplicate or conflicting bindings if another device is sending input for the same action.
Force feedback is absent
- Confirm that the wheel advertises PC/Windows or DirectInput support and that the manufacturer’s driver identifies it correctly.
- Open the Controls menu, select the Force Feedback tab, and enable the feature.
- Reconnect or restart the game after changing the wheel’s operating mode; some devices expose feedback only during initialization.
- Test with a stock official vehicle and setup. The official troubleshooting guidance recommends this approach because modified vehicles or setups can change the forces you feel.
- Check relevant Steam Big Picture controller settings when your case involves Steam input or controller remapping. Treat those settings as a case-specific troubleshooting step, not a universal fix.
BeamNG.drive’s compatibility information does not promise force feedback for every wheel or every controller combination. Basic steering may work even when force feedback does not.
The wheel feels too strong, weak, or inconsistent
- Return to the rear-wheel-drive ETK K-Series or another stock vehicle for a repeatable baseline.
- Make only one force-feedback change at a time and retest.
- For violent crash forces, lower torque in the wheel’s configuration software and compensate with in-game strength only as needed.
- Remember that powerful front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive cars can add torque steer during setup, so do not use them as your first calibration reference.
Advanced response correction curves: when to use them
Response correction curves are an advanced calibration feature, not a normal first step. BeamNG.drive can read curves generated by tools such as WheelCheck and Force Curve Modifier when they are placed in the user’s settings/inputmaps folder. A curve can help investigate or correct unusual response behavior after the device, driver, mode, rotation, and ordinary bindings are already working.
- First establish that the raw wheel axis and pedals respond correctly without a curve.
- Use a curve only when you have a specific response problem—such as a repeatable non-linear behavior—that ordinary calibration does not explain.
- Generate or edit the curve with the relevant calibration tool, then place the resulting file in the user’s
settings/inputmapsfolder as documented for that tool. - Restart or reload the input configuration, test in a stock vehicle, and remove the curve if it makes the response less predictable.
Do not install a response curve simply because a wheel has no preset. Manual bindings are the ordinary solution for a missing preset.
Compatibility checks before you buy or replace hardware
Because compatibility varies by model and operating mode, check these items rather than relying on a generic “works with PC” label:
- PC/Windows or DirectInput mode: required for reliable PC input and particularly relevant to wheel force feedback.
- Driver and firmware support: the manufacturer should provide current software for your operating system.
- Rotation range: the hardware must expose a usable steering range that can be matched in BeamNG.drive.
- Pedal axes: separate throttle and brake axes are preferable when the driver supports them.
- BeamNG preset: a preset can reduce setup time, but its absence does not prevent manual mapping.
- Console-only status: a controller designed only for a console may need an adapter or software, and some such devices will not work.
- Force-feedback capability: steering input and force feedback are separate capabilities; confirm both for the exact model and PC mode.
Do not treat the documented tested examples—such as the Logitech G29, G920, G923, or Thrustmaster TX Racing Wheel—as a guarantee for every revision, operating system, or connection method. They illustrate supported device categories, not a current product ranking.

A repeatable first-session checklist
- Install the wheel or controller manufacturer’s latest driver and firmware.
- Confirm the hardware is visible in the manufacturer’s utility and select PC/Windows or DirectInput mode where applicable.
- For a wheel, choose its highest available rotation angle and note the value.
- Enable separate pedal axes if the driver offers them.
- Launch BeamNG.drive and open Options > Controls > Bindings > Vehicle.
- Use the preset if it is correct; otherwise bind steering, throttle, brake, and required buttons manually.
- For a wheel, open the Controls menu’s Force Feedback tab and enable feedback if the device supports it.
- Test in a stock official vehicle, beginning with an ETK K-Series for force-feedback tuning.
- Correct the rotation-angle mismatch, missing axes, or device mode before attempting advanced response curves.
- Only after the basic setup is stable, tune feedback strength and optional response behavior for your normal vehicles.
When to stop troubleshooting and consult the game documentation
Escalate to BeamNG.drive’s current support and compatibility documentation when the device works in Windows but remains absent in the game after manual binding, when Steam input changes behavior unpredictably, or when force feedback is unavailable despite a verified PC/DirectInput device and the enabled Force Feedback tab. Include the device model, operating mode, driver and firmware versions, connection type, and whether the problem occurs with a stock official vehicle. Those details distinguish a mapping issue from a compatibility or hardware issue.
