To set up a racing wheel in Forza Horizon 6, first confirm that your exact wheel version is supported on your platform, update its firmware and drivers, connect the wheelbase directly (not through a USB hub), and make sure it is registered as Device 1. In the game, create or select a wheel profile, verify steering and pedals under Settings > Advanced Controls > Wheel > Custom Profile, begin with default force-feedback and rotation settings, then change one control at a time.

Forza Horizon 6 launches on Xbox Series X|S and PC on May 19, 2026. Premium Edition early access starts May 15, and a PlayStation 5 version is scheduled for later in 2026. The instructions below apply to the Xbox Series X|S and PC versions covered by the current support documentation.

1. Confirm compatibility before you connect anything

Wheel support is platform-specific. An Xbox-certified version and a PC-only version of a similar-looking wheel are not interchangeable, and a wheel that works on PC may not work on Xbox Series X|S. Check the official Forza supported-device table for the exact model and platform before buying, borrowing or troubleshooting hardware.

What to compare after compatibility is established

Once a model is confirmed, compare the things that affect installation and driving feel:

  • Certification: Xbox Series X|S, PC, or both.
  • Support completeness: full support, partial support or support expected in a later update.
  • Force feedback: determine the drive type and available torque from the wheel manufacturer; those specifications are not given in the Forza compatibility table.
  • Pedals: check whether pedals are included and whether they connect to the wheelbase or as a separate USB device.
  • Software and firmware: identify the manufacturer app, required driver and the platform needed to install updates.
  • Extra hardware: a shifter or handbrake may be separate and may need its own custom mapping.
Comparison item Why it matters in FH6 What is established by the support information
Platform certification Determines whether the console or PC can communicate with the wheel. Must be checked by exact model in the official table.
Support status Partial or pending support can leave controls or force feedback unavailable. Asterisks identify partial or expected-in-update entries.
Drive type and torque Changes resistance, detail and clipping risk. Not stated in the Forza table; use the manufacturer specification.
Pedal and accessory connection Separate USB devices may not map automatically. Custom wheel profiles can be required.
Update workflow Outdated firmware can prevent detection or force feedback. Updates may require a PC or laptop even for Xbox owners.

2. Update firmware, drivers and wheel software

Forza Support’s current instruction is explicit: update the wheel’s drivers and firmware before playing. Xbox owners may need to connect the wheel to a PC or laptop to download and install the manufacturer’s update, then reconnect it to the console.

  1. Identify the exact model and platform variant from the label, packaging or manufacturer software.
  2. On a Windows PC, install the current manufacturer driver and configuration utility for that model.
  3. Connect the wheelbase as instructed by the manufacturer and apply every available firmware update. Do not disconnect power or USB during the update.
  4. For Logitech G29 and G920 users, install or update Logitech G Hub before launching the game.
  5. Restart the computer after a driver or firmware update if the manufacturer’s updater requests it.
  6. Open the configuration utility and confirm that the wheel turns, the pedals register and the rotation setting can be read or changed.
  7. Shut down the game before moving the updated wheel to Xbox, then connect it to the console using the Xbox-compatible version of the hardware.

Do not assume that a console connection can perform every update. If the Xbox does not expose an update utility, use a Windows PC or laptop, complete the update there, and then return the wheel to the console.

3. Connect the hardware in the right order

Use a direct wheelbase connection

  1. Place the wheelbase on a rigid desk or cockpit and connect its power supply.
  2. Connect the pedals and any supported accessories according to the wheel manufacturer’s diagram.
  3. Plug the wheelbase directly into a USB port on the PC or console. Avoid USB hubs, extension chains and front-panel ports that disconnect under load when a direct rear port is available.
  4. Turn on the platform and allow it to finish detecting the wheel before starting Forza Horizon 6.
  5. With multiple USB input devices attached, check which device the game identifies as Device 1. Force feedback is sent to Device 1.

Disconnect competing controllers, shifters or pedal sets while diagnosing force feedback. A second input device can become Device 1 or cause the game to send feedback to the wrong hardware.

When pedals or shifters are separate USB devices

The game may not automatically map a pedal set or shifter connected directly to USB. Leave the devices connected, open the wheel controls, and create a custom profile that assigns steering, throttle, brake, clutch and gear inputs individually. If detection is inconsistent, reconnect only the wheelbase first, confirm it as Device 1, then add the other devices one at a time.

4. Create and verify a wheel profile in the game

  1. Launch Forza Horizon 6 after the wheel is powered and detected.
  2. Open Settings, then Advanced Controls, then Wheel.
  3. Select Custom Profile and bind the wheel’s steering, throttle, brake and other controls.
  4. Turn the wheel fully left and right and press each pedal through its complete travel. Confirm that the on-screen input bars move smoothly from zero to full.
  5. Save the profile with a clear name, such as “PC wheel” or “Xbox wheel,” so it is easy to restore after testing another device.
  6. Only after the inputs work should you tune force feedback, steering rotation, damper or sensitivity.

The game uses wheel-specific input handling. Its layered steering assists are disabled whenever a wheel is used, so a controller setting that felt stable may not translate directly to wheel control.

Choose a steering mode deliberately

  • Normal steering: the more stable starting choice. Use it when you want a forgiving response while learning the wheel or driving mixed events.
  • Simulation steering: turns off the layered steering systems that assist control. It can provide a more direct response but exposes mistakes more quickly.

Pick one mode, test it for several minutes and avoid changing steering mode while adjusting several sliders. Otherwise you will not know which change caused a new behavior.

5. Start from defaults, then tune one control at a time

Forza’s tuning guidance recommends beginning with the default values in both the game and the wheel software, including overall force-feedback gain and rotation angle. Defaults provide a known reference and make it easier to identify whether a problem is caused by hardware, mapping or a tuning change.

Control What it changes Practical starting advice
Steering Axis Deadzone Inside Creates a dead area around the wheel center. Leave at zero unless the car will not travel straight with the wheel centered. A large deadzone hides useful steering detail.
Invert Force Feedback Reverses the direction of the force. Leave off unless the wheel pulls into a turn instead of resisting it.
Force Feedback Scale Sets overall wheel force. Raise gradually. Excessive scale can saturate or clip forces, making different impacts feel identical.
Center Spring Scale Adds dynamic centering force. Use sparingly. Too much spring can mask the tire-aligning torque that tells you when the car is losing grip.
Wheel Damper Scale Adds resistance to wheel movement. Increase only when the wheel feels too loose. Too much damper can overpower slip information and make drifting harder.
Steering Sensitivity Changes how hardware rotation maps to the car’s steering lock. Change it only after deciding on the wheel’s driver rotation. Altering both can produce erratic steering.
Steering Rotation Sets the physical rotation range used by the wheel and game. Keep the wheel-software and in-game choices coordinated; do not change both without retesting.

A controlled tuning loop

  1. Record the default values or take a screenshot.
  2. Change one slider by a small amount.
  3. Drive the same car on the same road or test area for several corners.
  4. Check straight-line stability, curb impacts, corner loading and whether the wheel becomes unusually hot or noisy.
  5. Keep the change only if it solves a specific problem; otherwise restore the previous value.

6. Published starting points for specific hardware

Manufacturer recommendations are baselines, not universal prescriptions. They were published for particular platforms and wheel families, so use them only after the wheel is detected correctly.

7. Fix missing or incorrect force feedback

Work through this sequence in order. It isolates the most common causes without changing several variables at once.

  1. Check power: make sure the wheelbase power supply is connected and the base completes its startup calibration.
  2. Check Device 1: disconnect extra controllers, pedals and shifters, then reconnect the wheelbase and confirm it is the first input device.
  3. Remove the USB hub: connect the wheelbase directly to the platform.
  4. Confirm the platform variant: an Xbox model and a PC/PlayStation model may look similar but use different console support.
  5. Update firmware and drivers: complete the manufacturer update on a PC or laptop, even if the final platform is Xbox.
  6. Check inversion: if the wheel pulls in the direction of a corner instead of resisting, enable Invert Force Feedback.
  7. Check scale: if the wheel feels weak, increase Force Feedback Scale gradually; if impacts all feel equally strong, reduce it to avoid clipping.
  8. Rebuild the profile: open Settings > Advanced Controls > Wheel > Custom Profile, remove conflicting bindings and test steering again.
  9. Restart cleanly: close the game, power-cycle the wheelbase, reconnect only the wheel, and launch the game again.

Symptoms and likely causes

Symptom Likely cause Action
No force feedback, but steering works Wrong Device 1, outdated firmware, unsupported variant or hub connection. Disconnect competing devices, update firmware, use a direct USB connection and verify the support table.
Wheel pulls the wrong way Force direction is inverted. Toggle Invert Force Feedback and retest.
Wheel feels dead around center Deadzone or low force scale. Return Steering Axis Deadzone Inside to zero and raise force scale cautiously.
Wheel is heavy but gives little detail Excessive damper, center spring or force scale. Reduce one of those controls, beginning with damper, and test the same corner again.
Steering is twitchy or inconsistent Driver rotation and in-game sensitivity were changed together, or the profile has conflicting bindings. Restore defaults, choose one rotation value, then adjust sensitivity alone.
Pedals or shifter are missing Separate USB devices were not mapped automatically. Create a custom profile and assign each axis or button manually.

8. Calibrate on the track before a serious race

Use a low-stakes event or free-drive area for the first calibration. The goal is to verify behavior, not to chase a particular number.

  1. Drive slowly in a straight line with the wheel physically centered. If the car drifts, inspect centering, deadzone and calibration before adding spring.
  2. Brake from moderate speed and confirm the brake axis reaches full input without jumping.
  3. Make a series of identical corners. If the wheel becomes progressively heavier and loses detail, reduce force scale or damper.
  4. Drive over a curb and then a smooth section. Distinct bumps should remain distinguishable rather than collapsing into one maximum-strength sensation.
  5. Try a controlled slide only after normal cornering feels predictable. Excess damper can make catching a slide and drifting harder.
  6. Save the profile once the controls are reliable. Keep a second profile for experimental settings instead of overwriting the known-good one.

9. Xbox and PC setup differences to remember

  • Firmware workflow: PC users can usually update while the wheel remains connected to Windows; Xbox users may need a PC or laptop for the same operation.
  • Model naming: do not substitute a PC-only model for an Xbox-certified model in the same product family.
  • Device order: the Device 1 rule applies whenever several USB input devices are connected, regardless of platform.
  • Baseline values: Fanatec publishes different PC and Xbox starting values, while the Thrustmaster Xbox note specifically calls for lower damper on the named models.
  • Profile portability: keep separate notes or profiles for PC and Xbox because rotation, sensitivity and device mappings may not transfer exactly.

10. A short pre-race checklist

  • Exact wheel model appears in the official supported-device table for the platform you are using.
  • Firmware and drivers are current; Logitech G29/G920 users have current Logitech G Hub.
  • Wheelbase power is connected and the base completes its startup calibration.
  • Wheelbase is plugged directly into USB, not a hub.
  • Unneeded controllers, pedal sets and shifters are disconnected while testing.
  • Wheel is registered as Device 1.
  • Steering, throttle and brake are assigned and visible in Advanced Controls > Wheel > Custom Profile.
  • Force-feedback inversion, scale, spring, damper, sensitivity and rotation have been changed only after defaults were tested.
  • The profile is saved before entering a competitive or long event.
