The best PS5 picture and sound setup starts with the equipment you already own: verify the signal the console and display are actually negotiating, leave resolution on Automatic unless you have a specific reason to override it, then configure HDR, refresh-rate features, audio output and optional 3D audio. A new television, headset, receiver or cable is not automatically required.
Before changing settings
PS5 features are limited by the entire connection chain, not just the console. The television or monitor, HDMI port, cable, receiver, soundbar, switch and capture device can each affect which combinations of resolution, HDR, refresh rate and variable refresh rate are available.
- For the clearest diagnosis, connect the PS5 directly to the display. Bypass a receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch or capture device temporarily.
- Use the HDMI cable included with the PS5 when it is available. If that cable is missing or you are troubleshooting a long or complicated connection, use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K 120 Hz.
- Identify the display’s HDMI port that supports its highest refresh rate. Some televisions reserve 4K/120 Hz or VRR for one or two specific ports.
- Update the display’s firmware before diagnosing a 4K/120 Hz problem. Manufacturers sometimes add or correct HDMI behavior through firmware.
Do not buy a cable simply because a menu option is unavailable. First test the included cable and a direct connection; replace hardware only when the existing path is unavailable, damaged or not rated for the signal you need.
Check the signal PS5 and your display are negotiating
Start with the information screen rather than guessing from the television’s input label. On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. The Current Video Output Signal area shows the active output, while the connected HDMI device information shows capabilities detected from the display. Sony documents this screen, along with the console’s resolution, HDR, VRR and refresh-rate controls, in its PS5 resolution guide.

- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Read Current Video Output Signal and the connected HDMI device details. Record the resolution, HDR status, VRR availability and refresh-rate information before changing anything.
- With a normal compatible setup, leave Resolution on Automatic. PS5 detects the display’s capabilities and selects the highest available resolution.
- Choose 2160p only when you are deliberately forcing 4K on a display that supports it and you have a reason not to use Automatic.
- If you are checking a 1440p monitor or television, use the console’s test option. PS5 can test 1440p output across SDR and HDR, 60 Hz and 120 Hz, and VRR when the display reports support.
The information screen is also your baseline after every change. If enabling a feature causes the resolution, HDR state or refresh-rate combination to disappear, the display or another device in the chain cannot currently provide that combination.
Configure the picture
Leave resolution on Automatic for most setups
Automatic is the sensible starting point because PS5 reads the display’s advertised capabilities and selects the highest available resolution. A manual 2160p setting does not create 4K capability that the television, HDMI port or intermediary device lacks. If a manual setting produces a blank or unstable image, return to Automatic and reconnect the console directly to the display.
Enable 120 Hz, VRR and ALLM only when the whole chain supports them
In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, enable 120 Hz Output when both the display and the game support 120 Hz. The console cannot make a 60 Hz game run at 120 Hz, and a display that lacks 120 Hz support cannot accept that signal.

VRR behavior and results vary by television, so confirm the active capability on the Video Output information screen and in the display’s own status panel when available.
ALLM can automatically place a compatible television into its low-latency or game mode while you play. PS5 does not send an ALLM signal while a media app is running, so the television may not switch modes during video playback. That is expected behavior, not necessarily a fault.
Choose and calibrate HDR
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR. Sony describes two relevant behaviors in its HDR setup guidance:
Rank #2

| HDR setting | What PS5 does | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| On When Supported | HDR-capable games and apps use HDR; unsupported content remains SDR. | A practical starting point when you want SDR content to stay SDR. |
| Always On | PS5 converts unsupported games and apps to HDR output. | Use only if the converted result looks better to you on your display and content. |
There is no universal winner between these modes because the result depends on the display and the content. For a neutral baseline, select On When Supported, then compare a familiar game or app with Always On if you prefer to evaluate both.
After selecting your HDR mode, choose Adjust HDR and follow the on-screen calibration flow. Perform the adjustment with the display in the picture mode you normally use for games, because changing the television’s brightness, tone mapping or HDR mode afterward changes what you see.
Use Video Transfer Rate controls only to solve instability
If a 4K image flickers, drops out or repeatedly renegotiates, return to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and try Video Transfer Rate -1. If the problem remains, try -2. Sony lists these values as troubleshooting options in its resolution and video-output guidance.
These settings reduce the signal combinations PS5 attempts to send. That can stabilize a marginal HDMI path, but it can also remove some combinations of resolution, refresh rate, HDR or color features. After choosing -1 or -2, recheck Current Video Output Signal and confirm that the resolution and refresh rate you actually want are still available. Leave Video Transfer Rate on Automatic while diagnosing 4K/120 Hz compatibility unless instability requires a lower value.
Fix a PS5 that will not show 4K at 120 Hz
4K/120 Hz requires a compatible display, a compatible game and a signal path that can carry the combination. Sony notes that HDMI 2.1 support and 4K/120 Hz behavior vary across equipment, and the technology is not uniformly implemented across the market. Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the display specification. Verify that the television or monitor explicitly supports 4K at 120 Hz, not merely 4K or a lower refresh rate.
- Update display firmware. Install the latest firmware offered by the display manufacturer, then power-cycle the display and PS5.
- Use the right HDMI port. Connect to the port identified for 4K/120 Hz or HDMI 2.1. Other ports may be limited to 4K/60 Hz even on the same television.
- Enable the television’s required mode. Some displays have an enhanced, high-bandwidth or gaming option that must be enabled per HDMI input.
- Connect directly. Remove receivers, soundbars, switches and capture devices from the video path. If 4K/120 Hz works directly, the intermediary device or its port is the bottleneck.
- Check the cable. Try the included PS5 cable. If it is unavailable or unsuitable for the route, use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz.
- Set PS5 to a compatible resolution mode. In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, use Resolution: Automatic or select 2160p on a confirmed 4K display.
- Keep Video Transfer Rate on Automatic. Change it to -1 or -2 only if the image is unstable, then verify which features remain active.
- Test with a supported game. The 120 Hz output option does not guarantee that every game renders at 120 Hz; the game itself must support the mode.
If the signal information still reports 60 Hz after these checks, the limitation is somewhere in the display, port, cable or intermediary path rather than a hidden PS5 performance setting. If the signal briefly reaches 120 Hz but flickers, prioritize a direct connection, the correct port and a suitably rated cable before lowering transfer rate.

Set up PS5 sound output
Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output. Audio settings depend on where sound is going: television speakers, headphones or an AV amplifier expose different controls. Sony’s menu names and amplifier options are documented in its PS5 audio-output guide.
- Select Output Device. Choose the television, connected headphones or another detected output. PS5 can switch automatically when a device such as a headset is connected; disable automatic switching only if you want to select the output manually each time.
- Match HDMI Device Type. Set this to the equipment actually receiving HDMI audio. Do not select an AV amplifier when the console is connected directly to ordinary television speakers.
- Configure an AV amplifier when applicable. Selecting AV amplifier exposes channel-count and speaker-position controls. Set the channel count to match the speakers physically connected to the amplifier, then adjust the speaker positions so PS5’s spatial processing reflects the room.
- Choose Audio Format (Priority). This setting affects the output format used by games and video apps, but the useful choices depend on the connected equipment. If you route audio through an amplifier, use a format it supports. The disc player and some other apps can have their own audio settings, so a change here may not override every application.
When sound is missing, first confirm the selected Output Device and HDMI Device Type, then test with the console connected directly to the television. A receiver or soundbar can pass video while still rejecting a particular audio format, so isolate the path before changing multiple format options.
Turn on 3D audio
TV-speaker 3D audio
PS5 can measure the room and tune 3D audio for the television’s built-in speakers. Sit in your normal listening position before starting, because the measurement is based on where you sit relative to the display.
- Open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (TV).
- Follow the room-measurement instructions using the wireless controller’s built-in microphone.
- When the process finishes, listen to familiar content with 3D audio and with stereo.
- Keep the mode that sounds better to you. Sony specifically recommends comparing both modes rather than assuming 3D audio is always preferable for television speakers.
Measure again after moving the television, changing your seating position or substantially changing the room. A new placement changes the acoustic relationship the console measured.
Headphone 3D audio
For headphones, open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones). You can create a personalized profile by following the prompts, or choose one of Sony’s five preset settings. Start with the personalized profile when the prompts are practical, then compare it with the presets using content you know well. The best choice is preference-dependent: a profile that sounds spacious for one listener or game may sound less natural for another.
Headphone 3D audio is separate from the television-speaker measurement. Repeating the TV room measurement will not configure headphones, and creating a headphone profile will not change the television-speaker setting.

Choose the setup that matches your equipment
| Sound path | Controls you should configure | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Television speakers | Output Device, HDMI Device Type, Audio Format (Priority), 3D Audio (TV) | 3D audio versus stereo from your normal listening position |
| Headphones | Output Device, automatic switching, 3D Audio (Headphones) | Personalized profile versus the five presets |
| AV amplifier and speakers | Output Device, HDMI Device Type: AV amplifier, channel count, speaker positions, Audio Format (Priority) | Whether the selected format and channel layout match the physical system |
These paths are alternatives, not a ranking. Use the controls exposed by the equipment you actually own, and avoid selecting a channel count, speaker layout or audio format that your system cannot reproduce.

Do I need a new HDMI cable for 4K HDR?
Not necessarily. Start with the cable supplied with the PS5 and a direct connection to the display. Buy an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K 120 Hz only if the included cable is missing, damaged, unsuitable for the route or cannot maintain the required signal. A cable upgrade cannot make a television or HDMI port support a feature it lacks.
Why does the TV show 4K but not 120 Hz?
4K and 120 Hz are separate requirements. Check that the game supports 120 Hz, that the display’s specification explicitly includes 4K/120 Hz, that you used the correct HDMI port and enabled the display’s enhanced or high-bandwidth mode. Receivers, soundbars, switches and capture devices can also restrict the video path. Confirm the negotiated result under Current Video Output Signal rather than relying on an input label.
Should I force 2160p instead of Automatic?
Automatic is preferable for normal use because PS5 detects the connected display and selects the highest available resolution. Force 2160p only when deliberately testing or correcting a compatible 4K setup. If the image becomes blank or unstable, return to Automatic.
Which HDR mode is best?
On When Supported keeps unsupported games and apps in SDR, while Always On converts them to HDR output. Use On When Supported as a neutral starting point, calibrate with Adjust HDR, and compare familiar content if you want to judge Always On on your particular display.

Why did ALLM work in a game but not in a streaming app?
PS5 does not send an ALLM signal while a media app is running. A compatible television may therefore enter its low-latency mode for games but remain in its normal picture mode during playback.

Do I have to use 3D audio?
No. For TV speakers, measure 3D audio from your normal seat and compare it directly with stereo. For headphones, compare a personalized profile with Sony’s five presets. Keep whichever sounds more natural to you and the content you use.
Final verification checklist
- Video Output reports the intended resolution and the expected HDR and VRR status.
- Resolution is Automatic unless a deliberate 2160p override is needed.
- 120 Hz Output is enabled only when the display and game support it.
- ALLM behavior is checked while a game is running, not while a media app is open.
- HDR has been calibrated with Adjust HDR in the display mode used for gaming.
- Video Transfer Rate remains Automatic unless -1 or -2 solved a verified flicker or dropout.
- Output Device and HDMI Device Type match the actual audio path.
- AV amplifier channel count and speaker positions match the speakers installed.
- 3D audio has been measured from the normal seat for TV speakers, or separately profiled for headphones.
Make one change at a time and return to the Video Output or Audio Output screen after each change. That approach shows which setting or device altered the negotiated signal instead of masking several problems with a collection of overrides.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get the best picture and sound on my PS5?
Check Current Video Output Signal first, leave Resolution on Automatic, enable supported HDR, 120 Hz and VRR features, then match Audio Output settings to your TV, headphones or AV amplifier. Use 3D audio only after comparing it with stereo or your existing headphone profile.
How do I set up 4K HDR on PS5?
Connect directly to a compatible 4K display, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, leave Resolution on Automatic or select 2160p for a deliberate test, set HDR to On When Supported, and run Adjust HDR in your normal gaming picture mode.
Why is my PS5 not showing 4K at 120 Hz?
Verify the display and game support 4K/120 Hz, update display firmware, use the correct HDMI 2.1 port and enhanced mode, test a direct connection, use the included or Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, and keep Video Transfer Rate on Automatic while diagnosing.
How do I turn on 3D audio on PS5?
For TV speakers, go to Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (TV) and complete room measurement with the controller microphone. For headphones, open 3D Audio (Headphones) and create a personalized profile or choose one of five presets.
The Bottom Line
Verify the negotiated signal first, then configure only the features your display, game and audio equipment support. Automatic resolution, On When Supported HDR, a correctly rated direct HDMI path and properly matched audio settings provide a reliable baseline; 3D audio and transfer-rate overrides should be judged by your room, content and stability.
