The safest PS5 setup gives the child a separate account inside an adult-managed PlayStation family, then applies age, communication, privacy, playtime, and spending controls to that account. Finish by locking the console’s user-management settings and testing the child’s sign-in before the first unsupervised session.

What you need before starting

Have the adult’s PlayStation account credentials available, access to the adult’s email address, and the child’s birth date. The adult account becomes the family manager (or uses the guardian role where PlayStation presents that option). Each adult and child should use a separate account. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PS5 Quick Start Guide states: “Each adult (👤) and child (👶) will need their own separate accounts.”

A separate child account matters because parental controls are attached to that account. If a child plays through an adult profile, the console cannot apply the child-specific age, communication, privacy, playtime, and spending rules consistently. Existing PlayStation family and parental-control settings from a PS4 account carry over when that account is used on a PS5.

Hardware setup is model-dependent. Connect the console, controller, display, and network by following the on-screen first-run prompts and the manual for your exact PS5 model. The steps below begin with family and user setup, which is the part that determines who can access what.

1. Create the adult family and the child account

Use the adult account as the family manager

  1. Sign in to the adult PlayStation account on the PS5.
  2. Open the profile menu and choose Switch User.
  3. Select Add User, then Get Started.
  4. Choose Create an Account and follow the prompts. Use the adult’s real details and email address for the family-manager account.
  5. Complete any email-verification step before handing the console to the child.

PlayStation’s family flow lets you create a child account and set parental controls at the same time. If the adult already has a PlayStation family, add the child to that family rather than creating a second adult profile just for the console.

Create the child’s own sign-in

  1. From the same Add User flow, choose the option to create a child account when prompted.
  2. Enter the child’s date of birth accurately. Age-based access and regional rating rules depend on this information.
  3. Review the account and family prompts, then finish the child’s email verification if PlayStation requests it.
  4. Sign in once as the child to confirm that the profile appears separately from the adult account.

Do not share the adult account’s password or leave the adult profile selected for convenience. A child who can use the adult profile is effectively outside the child-account restrictions.

2. Open Family Management and choose the right starting restrictions

On the PS5, go to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management. Select the child’s account. PlayStation provides preset restriction levels and also lets the family manager customize individual controls. Use the preset that best matches the child’s age as a starting point, then review each category before the first play session.

Age ratings are a screening tool, not a substitute for your judgment. Rating labels and account capabilities vary by country or region, and a rating does not tell you whether a particular game’s online culture, chat volume, controls, or difficulty will suit this child.

Control area What to decide Practical starting question
Games and content Which age-rated games, applications, videos, and other content the child may use Does the allowed rating match the child’s age and your own judgment about themes?
Communication Whether the child may communicate with other players and use in-game messaging or voice features Should communication be off, limited, or allowed only with people you know?
Content created by other players Whether the child may view user-generated content Could the game expose the child to language, images, or behavior you do not want them to see?
Privacy Who can interact with the child and what profile activity is visible Can strangers find, message, follow, or invite this account?
Playtime When the child may play and for how long What schedule fits school, sleep, meals, and family routines?
Spending Whether the child can buy items and the maximum monthly amount Should purchases remain blocked, or is there a defined allowance?

Record the decisions you make, especially communication, privacy, and spending. A short explanation helps a less experienced player understand that the restrictions are part of the account rather than a punishment applied to a particular game.

3. Set game and content access

Start with the child’s age rating

In Family Management, review the game and content age level for the child. Select the appropriate preset, then inspect any individual exceptions or custom settings. Use the rating system for your region; labels are not identical everywhere.

Check games one at a time when the child’s suitability is uncertain. Consider the game’s themes, violence, language, gambling-like mechanics, user-generated material, and online interaction in addition to the printed rating. A game can be technically age-rated for the child yet still be a poor fit for a particular child’s reading ability, sensitivity, or experience level.

Handle exceptions deliberately

If a blocked game or feature is appropriate after your review, use the family manager controls to approve it rather than signing the child into the adult account. Keep a note of what you approved so a later change does not accidentally broaden access to every title.

4. Configure communication and privacy before online play

Decide whether communication is enabled

Family Management includes controls for communicating with other players and for viewing content created by other players. Decide separately whether the child may use voice chat, text chat, messages, invitations, and similar features. For a first session, disabling communication is the simplest baseline for a child who has never played online.

Explain the rule in concrete terms: the child should not reveal a real name, school, address, phone number, passwords, or live location. They should know how to leave a game, mute a player, and ask an adult for help if a message or interaction feels threatening or confusing.

Use exception requests instead of the adult profile

PlayStation supports requests for exceptions to in-game communication restrictions. When a child requests an exception, the family manager or guardian can review it. Approve only the specific feature or game you have considered; do not bypass the child account by temporarily handing over the adult login.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review privacy visibility

Set who can interact with the child and what activity other players can see. The exact choices can differ by region and may change as PlayStation updates its services, so read each current option rather than relying on an old screenshot. Revisit privacy after the child begins using friends lists or multiplayer features.

5. Set playtime rules that the child can understand

Use the playtime controls in Family Management to define permitted times and duration. Build the schedule around the child’s actual routine: school or care, homework, meals, sleep, and other activities. A rule such as “after homework, for one hour” may be easier for a young child to follow than an unexplained closing time.

Tell the child what happens when the session ends and give a warning before the limit if the console presents one. For a less experienced player, demonstrate how to save progress or safely leave a game before the limit expires. Adjust the schedule after observing a normal week; the first setting is a starting arrangement, not a permanent promise.

6. Lock purchases and explain the wallet rule

Leave the monthly limit at zero unless you intend to allow spending

PlayStation says a child account’s monthly spending limit defaults to zero. Purchases made by a child account draw from the family manager’s wallet. That combination blocks child-account purchases until the adult deliberately changes the limit and also means an approved purchase uses the adult wallet rather than a separate child balance.

Sony Playstation 5 Disc Version PS5 Console - 4K-TV Gaming, 120Hz 8K Output, 16GB GDDR6, 825GB SSD, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.1 (Renewed) White
  • Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
  • PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
  • Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
  • 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
  • Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.

In Family Management, select the child account and review the spending limit. Keep it at zero when you do not want purchases. If you do allow spending, set a specific monthly amount, tell the child what it covers, and explain that unused balance and purchase approval follow the account and wallet rules shown on the console in your region.

Prevent accidental approval

  • Do not save the adult’s payment credentials where the child can use the adult profile.
  • Require the child to ask before buying downloadable games, add-ons, subscriptions, or in-game items.
  • Check the purchase confirmation screen yourself when introducing the process.
  • Review the child’s spending limit after any family or account change.

Prices, taxes, currencies, refund rules, and payment options vary by region. The zero-default and family-wallet behavior are the key safeguards; the on-screen account terms govern the transaction in your location.

7. Protect the console from an easy switch to an unrestricted user

Set a console restriction passcode

Open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > PS5 Console Restrictions and set a console restriction passcode known only to the adult. Do not use a code the child already knows, such as a birth year or a controller PIN used elsewhere. Store it in the same secure place as other household account credentials.

Restrict new users and guest login

In the console restriction settings, consider disabling new-user creation and guest login. These options reduce the chance that a child can switch to a newly created or guest profile that does not carry the child account’s restrictions. Keep the adult account protected and sign out of it when you finish changing settings.

These console-level protections complement, but do not replace, the child account. The child still needs the separate family profile for age, communication, privacy, playtime, and spending rules.

8. Verify that every control is active

  1. Switch to the child profile and confirm the correct name and avatar appear.
  2. Check that the child completed email verification if the account requested it.
  3. Attempt a harmless test, such as opening content above the selected age level, to confirm the expected restriction message appears. Do not use the adult account to test.
  4. Check the communication, spending, and playtime settings from the family manager account.
  5. Sign out of the child account and sign back in after making changes.

Parental controls are linked to the child account across devices. If you change a control while a game session is already running, PlayStation says the child may need to sign out and back in before the change takes effect. A setting that appears ineffective is often a sign-in or session-refresh problem rather than a reason to remove the restriction.

9. Make the first play session approachable

Before handing over the controller, sit with the child for a short orientation. Show the PS button, the home screen, how to return to a running game, and how to ask for help. Let the child practice switching between the game and the home screen while you are present.

Demonstrate the boundaries you set: where communication is unavailable, what to do when playtime ends, and how to stop if something online feels wrong. Use plain instructions such as “pause, leave the game, and get me” rather than expecting the child to solve an unfamiliar menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose an introductory game the child can control successfully. Difficulty, reading load, camera movement, and online pressure often matter as much as the formal age rating. Watch the first session long enough to see whether the child understands saving, returning to the game, and asking for assistance.

10. Troubleshoot common setup problems

Symptom Checks Action
The child can access content that should be blocked Confirm the child is signed in to the child account, not the adult profile or a guest profile. Sign out, sign back in, and review the selected age level in Family Management.
A new restriction is not visible during a game The game session may still have the old account state. Exit the game, sign out of the child account, sign back in, and test again.
The child can communicate despite your rule Check both the account communication setting and any approved exception. Remove an exception you no longer want and refresh the child’s session.
A purchase is attempted Review the monthly limit and confirm which wallet the child account uses. Return the limit to zero if spending is not intended; keep the adult account signed out.
The child switches to another profile Check whether new-user creation or guest login remains enabled. Set the console restriction passcode and disable those options where available.
Family options look different from an online guide Menus and features can vary by region, account type, and software updates. Read the current labels on the console and consult the manual or support guidance for your model and region.

11. Maintain the setup as the child grows

Review controls after major changes

Revisit Family Management when the child reaches a new age band, starts a new school year, begins multiplayer, or asks for a new game. Review all categories rather than changing only the game restriction: communication, privacy, playtime, and spending may need different decisions.

Review exceptions and spending regularly

Keep a short list of communication or game exceptions you approved. Remove exceptions that are no longer needed. Check the monthly spending limit after family members change payment arrangements or after an account migration.

Teach account safety as a skill

Explain why the child has a separate account, why the adult passcode stays private, and why asking before a purchase is part of the household rule. As the child becomes more experienced, involve them in reviewing a setting without revealing the passcode or adult password.

Age-and-experience decision guide

Situation Reasonable initial approach What to reassess
Young child with no online experience Use the age-appropriate content preset, keep communication and spending off, and set a short supervised playtime. Whether the child can navigate the interface, stop on request, and report uncomfortable content.
Older child beginning multiplayer Keep the child account, review privacy carefully, and allow only communication features you have discussed. Friend requests, messages, voice chat behavior, and the child’s ability to mute or leave.
Child moving from PS4 Use the existing family account where possible; verify that its inherited settings match your current rules. Any changes caused by a new game, a new region, or updated account features.
Child requesting purchases Keep the limit at zero until you have agreed on an amount and approval process. The monthly limit, wallet use, and whether the child understands one-time versus recurring charges.

The right setup is not the most restrictive preset in every category. It is a child account whose limits match the child’s age, maturity, game, and online situation, protected by a console passcode and checked after each meaningful change.
