Sony’s DualSense Edge is the pro PS5 controller covered here. Pair it with a powered-on PS5, update its device software, create a custom profile, and assign that profile to an Fn shortcut. Button remaps, stick and trigger behavior, vibration, and trigger effects can then be recalled without rebuilding the layout each time.
What this guide covers
The DualSense Edge is Sony’s PS5 controller with interchangeable stick modules, adjustable controls, remappable buttons, and profile storage. Its settings are managed through the PS5 Accessories menus or the PlayStation Accessories app for Windows. The same controller profile can travel with the controller to another PS5 or compatible device, although some features depend on the device you connect to.
You need the controller, its supplied USB cable, and a PS5 that is turned on for first pairing. A Windows PC is optional if you want to configure the controller away from the console.

Decide whether each profile is for a particular game, a control style, or a physical comfort preference. A game profile can contain only the remaps that solve a specific problem, while a standard profile can preserve the normal layout. A comfort profile might combine a less forceful vibration level with different stick or trigger behavior. Naming profiles by purpose makes them easier to identify than names such as Profile 1 or New Profile.

- Ultra Customizable Controls
- Mappable Back Buttons
- DualSense Wireless Controller Features Built In
- Replaceable Stick Modules and Caps
Keep controller-level changes separate from changes made inside a game. The Edge sends the function saved in its profile, while the game can reinterpret that input with its own control menu. Testing one layer at a time makes conflicts much easier to diagnose.
Pair the DualSense Edge and charge it
- Turn on the PS5.
- Connect the DualSense Edge to the console with the included USB cable.
- Press the PS button.
- Wait for the light bar to blink and the player indicator to light, confirming pairing.
After the first pairing, disconnect the cable and use the controller wirelessly. It can charge while the PS5 is on or in rest mode. For rest-mode charging, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Supply Power to USB Ports and choose any setting other than Off.
If the console is set not to supply USB power in rest mode, the controller will not charge while the PS5 is sleeping even though the cable is connected. Change that setting before assuming the controller or cable has failed.

Use a wired connection when you want one
To force communication over USB, open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > Communication Method and select Use USB Cable. The Edge’s connector housing can lock the included braided cable in place, which helps prevent the plug from being pulled out during play.
Update the controller before customizing it
Updating first prevents you from tuning a profile against older controller software. On the PS5, open Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller, then select DualSense Edge Wireless Controller Device Software and follow the update prompt.
Windows users can connect the controller to a PC and update it through the PlayStation Accessories app. Keep the cable connected until the app confirms that the update has finished. If you configure profiles on Windows, updating and editing happen in the same application, but the resulting profiles remain on the controller rather than only on that computer.
Create a custom profile on PS5
- Open Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > Custom Profiles.
- Select Create Custom Profile.
- Enter a name that identifies the game or control scheme.
- Select the setting you want to customize.
A profile can contain button assignments, stick sensitivity and deadzone settings, trigger deadzones, vibration intensity, and trigger-effect intensity. You can edit the profile later from the same Custom Profiles menu. Make a small change, apply it, and test it before making the next change; that gives you a clear way to undo a setting that feels wrong.
What each profile setting controls
| Setting | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Button assignments | Changes the function produced by supported physical buttons. |
| Stick sensitivity curve | Changes how stick movement is translated into in-game movement; six curves are available. |
| Stick deadzone | Sets how much stick tilt is ignored before an input registers. |
| Trigger deadzone | Sets how much L2 or R2 travel is ignored before the trigger input registers. |
| Vibration intensity | Adjusts the strength of controller vibration. |
| Trigger-effect intensity | Adjusts the resistance or effect strength applied by the adaptive triggers. |
Use the in-menu playtest after changing a deadzone or sensitivity curve. Move the stick or press the trigger gradually and verify that the response begins where you expect; a deadzone that is too large can hide small movements, while one that is too small can allow unwanted input.
Remap buttons step by step
- Open an existing profile or create one in Custom Profiles.
- Select Customize Button Assignments.
- Select the physical button you want to change.
- Choose the function that button should perform.
- Select Apply.
To make a supported button produce no input, select the button and choose Disable. Apply the change before moving to another setting so the profile records each adjustment. If a function does not appear in the list for the selected button, the controller does not permit that assignment; choosing a different menu path will not bypass the rule.

- Aim and move with precision by swapping in fresh stick modules* so you’re always playing with equipment that’s in great shape. Plus, three types of changeable stick caps help you stay comfortable in-game without sacrificing grip or stability.
- Mappable back buttons The DualSense Edge wireless controller’s two swappable sets of back buttons can be configured to any other button input, so you’ve always got game-changing actions and essential controls at your fingertips.
- Adjustable trigger lengths Manually set the travel distance of your left and right triggers for an optimal experience with whatever you’re playing. Fast-paced FPS? Set a shorter travel distance to shoot faster on the field. Competitive racer? Set a longer travel distance for precise throttle control on the track.
- Remappable buttons Remap or even deactivate specific button inputs, so you can create a completely personalized control setup that’s ideal for the game at hand.
- Quick-swap control profiles Once you’ve found your ideal control settings, you can save them to unique profiles and swap between them on-the-fly, so your favourite configurations are always ready when you are.
Assignment limits you cannot override
| Control | Rule |
|---|---|
| Fn button | Fn cannot be reassigned, and another button cannot be given the Fn function. |
| Circle and cross | Both must always have an assignment. |
| L2 and R2 | They can be swapped, but they cannot receive arbitrary additional functions or multiple functions. |
| Other supported buttons | They can be assigned a different available function or disabled where the menu permits it. |
These limits explain why a layout may not accept a seemingly logical remap. If the desired function is not listed for that physical button, it is outside the controller’s assignment rules rather than a failed save.
Adjust sticks, triggers, vibration, and trigger effects
Choose a stick sensitivity curve
The Edge provides six stick sensitivity curves. Start with the curve that gives predictable movement in the in-menu playtest, then check it in the game. A curve changes the relationship between how far you move the stick and how quickly the game responds; it does not change the game’s own sensitivity setting. If a game has a separate sensitivity control, treat that as a second adjustment and change it only after the controller curve feels consistent.

Set stick and trigger deadzones
A deadzone is the amount of movement ignored before an input registers. Increase a stick deadzone only when you need to suppress unwanted movement, and test after every adjustment. For triggers, the deadzone determines how far L2 or R2 must travel before the game sees a press. The profile stores stick and trigger deadzone values separately, so correcting an unwanted stick drift-like input does not automatically alter trigger behavior.
Control vibration and adaptive-trigger effects
Vibration intensity and trigger-effect intensity are independent profile settings. Lowering one does not automatically lower the other, so adjust both if you want a less forceful feel. Save different values in separate profiles when you need a comfort-oriented layout and a feedback-heavy layout. A profile can therefore preserve your preferred button map while offering a different physical feel for another game or player.
Assign profiles to Fn shortcuts
- In the DualSense Edge profile manager, open the Unassigned Profiles tab.
- Select a profile and assign it to an available action-button shortcut.
- Repeat for any other profile you want available during play.
During a game, hold Fn and press triangle, circle, cross, or square. The Fn-plus-triangle combination is the permanent default-profile shortcut. The other three action-button combinations can hold custom profiles, allowing you to switch layouts without opening the PS5 menus.
There are four shortcut combinations in all, but only three can be assigned to custom profiles because Fn plus triangle is reserved for the default profile. If a shortcut appears unavailable, check whether it is the fixed default combination rather than an unassigned slot.

Give each profile a name that describes its purpose rather than its creation date. For example, a game-specific remap, a standard layout, and a comfort layout are easier to identify than Profile 1, Profile 2, and Profile 3. Test every shortcut before starting a match so you know which action button selects each layout. Switching briefly to the default profile is also a useful way to tell whether an unexpected command comes from the Edge or from the game.
Profile capacity and portability
| Capability | Documented behavior |
|---|---|
| Total stored profiles | Four profiles total, including the default profile. |
| Custom profiles | Up to three custom profiles in addition to the default profile. |
| Shortcut combinations | Four Fn-plus-action-button combinations; Fn-plus-triangle is permanently assigned to the default profile, leaving three custom shortcuts. |
| Where profiles are stored | On the controller itself. |
| Moving to another PS5 | The stored profiles can be used with another PS5. |
| Moving to another computer or mobile device | Profiles can be used on another computer or mobile device when the connected device supports the relevant features. |
Because the profiles live on the controller, changing consoles does not require recreating every remap. Device-specific behavior can still differ: a connected game or platform may not expose every feature that the Edge can store. Treat the controller profile as the portable baseline, then check the host device’s own control options for any additional mapping.
Set up the DualSense Edge on a Windows PC
- Connect the controller to the Windows PC with USB.
- Install and open PlayStation Accessories.
- Choose Create Profile or select an unassigned profile.
- Enter a profile name.
- Assign a shortcut.
- Customize the settings you need.
- Select Apply after each item.
- Select Done when finished.
The app can configure button assignments, stick and trigger behavior, vibration, and trigger-effect settings supported by the controller. The profile remains on the Edge, so you can reconnect it to a PS5 or another compatible device without rebuilding the layout. Features that depend on the host device may not be available everywhere. If you use the Edge with more than one computer, connect the controller and verify the stored profile rather than assuming each computer has a separate copy.

How the Edge compares with other pro-controller options
If you are evaluating a different pro controller, compare the features that affect this workflow rather than relying on a button count alone. First, check whether remaps are stored in the controller or only in game software. Controller-stored profiles are portable; software-only layouts must be recreated or installed on each host.
Next compare how many profile shortcuts are available and how quickly you can switch them during play. Examine the range of stick-sensitivity curves, stick deadzone controls, trigger deadzones, vibration settings, and trigger-effect settings. Back-button ergonomics also matter because a control that is difficult to reach will not help even if the software supports the assignment.
For PS5 use, verify support for the console’s relevant features, including haptics and adaptive triggers, as well as the controller’s firmware-update method. Finally, check whether stick modules are replaceable and whether the controller supports the computers or mobile devices you actually use. These comparison points identify meaningful differences without assuming that an unnamed third-party model offers feature parity with the DualSense Edge.
Troubleshoot remaps and connection problems
A remap produces an unexpected action
Check the game’s own controller settings for a conflicting layout. A game-level remap can reinterpret the command that the Edge is sending, making a correct controller profile appear incorrect. Temporarily return the game to its standard layout, test the controller profile, and then add only the game-side changes you actually need.
The shortcut changes the wrong profile
Review the assignments in the Unassigned Profiles area and remember that Fn plus triangle always selects the default profile. Reassign one of the other action-button shortcuts if necessary, then test it from inside the game. Hold Fn first and press the action button deliberately; pressing the action button alone performs its normal game function.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe controller still behaves incorrectly
- Turn off the PS5.
- Use a pin to press the small reset button on the controller.
- Reconnect the controller with the supplied USB cable.
- Press the PS button.
The reset procedure does not reconfigure pairing or profile settings. If the controller continues to misbehave afterward, use PlayStation Repairs for the next service step. Updating the device software after reconnecting is also sensible if the console or PlayStation Accessories app offers an update.
A stick module fails
PlayStation lists a replacement stick module sold separately. The left and right modules are interchangeable, so a failed module can be replaced without treating the two sides as different parts. A replacement module addresses the hardware component; it does not replace the need to check the profile’s sensitivity and deadzone settings afterward.
The controller will not charge in rest mode
Check Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Supply Power to USB Ports. If it is set to Off, the PS5 will not supply power to the controller while resting. Choose another available setting and reconnect the cable.
A reliable setup sequence for each new game
- Update the DualSense Edge device software.
- Create a named profile for the game or control scheme.
- Remap only the buttons that solve a specific control problem.
- Set stick and trigger deadzones, then use the menu playtest.
- Adjust vibration and trigger-effect intensity independently.
- Apply and save every change.
- Assign the profile to one of the three custom Fn shortcuts.
- Switch between the profile and the default layout in the game to confirm that both behave as intended.
This sequence separates controller-level changes from game-level changes. If a command is wrong, you can identify whether the problem is in the DualSense Edge profile or in the game’s own control menu instead of changing both at once. It also leaves the default profile intact, giving you a known-good comparison whenever you troubleshoot.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the DualSense Edge wirelessly after setup?
Yes. Pair it once with the powered-on PS5 using the included USB cable and press PS. After pairing completes, disconnect the cable and use the controller wirelessly.
Where do I update DualSense Edge firmware?
On PS5, go to Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller Device Software. On Windows, use the PlayStation Accessories app with the controller connected.
Can I disable a button?
For supported controls, open Customize Button Assignments, select the physical button, choose Disable, and select Apply. Circle and cross must retain an assignment, and Fn cannot be disabled or reassigned.
Can I assign two functions to one button?
The Edge does not allow arbitrary multiple functions on L2 or R2, and the available choices depend on the physical button. If the function is not offered in the assignment menu, it cannot be added through the profile.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How many custom profiles can I keep?
You can store four profiles total, including the default profile, which means up to three custom profiles. Fn plus triangle always selects the default, leaving three custom shortcut combinations for those custom profiles.
Do profiles move to another PS5?
Yes. Profiles are stored on the controller, so they can be used on another PS5. A connected device or game may still support only some of the stored features.
Why does a remap work in one game but not another?
The game may have its own controller layout that conflicts with the Edge profile or may not expose every controller feature. Test with the game’s standard layout first, then add game-side changes one at a time.
What should I do if resetting does not help?
Reset with the small controller button, reconnect by USB, and press PS. Resetting does not reconfigure pairing or profile settings. If the fault remains, use PlayStation Repairs.

Pair the DualSense Edge over USB, update it, create a custom profile, and use Customize Button Assignments to remap supported controls. Save the profile to the controller and attach it to an Fn shortcut so the layout, sensitivity, deadzones, vibration, and trigger effects are available on demand. Remember that Fn itself cannot be remapped, circle and cross must remain assigned, and the game may have a second control layer that can conflict with your controller profile.

Where can I change DualSense Edge button assignments?
On PS5, open the controller’s Custom Profiles menu, create or edit a profile, choose Customize Button Assignments, select a physical button, choose its function, and select Apply.
Can I remap the Fn button?
No. Fn cannot be reassigned, and another button cannot be given the Fn function. Fn is reserved for profile shortcuts.
How do I switch profiles during a game?
Hold Fn and press triangle, circle, cross, or square. Fn plus triangle is permanently assigned to the default profile; the other three combinations can hold custom profiles.
Are DualSense Edge profiles saved on the console?
Profiles are stored on the controller. They can be used with another PS5 or compatible computer or mobile device, although host-device support for individual features can vary.
How many profiles can the controller store?
Four total, including the default profile. That leaves up to three custom profiles and three assignable custom Fn shortcuts.
Why is a remapped button still doing something unexpected?
Check the game’s own controller settings for a conflicting remap. Return the game to its standard layout, test the Edge profile, and then add game-side changes separately.
What if a stick module fails?
PlayStation lists a replacement stick module sold separately, and the left and right modules are interchangeable. After replacement, check the profile’s stick sensitivity and deadzone settings.
The Bottom Line
Pair, update, and configure the DualSense Edge in a named profile, then assign it to an Fn shortcut. Profiles stay on the controller, while deadzones, sensitivity, vibration, and trigger effects can be tuned independently. Keep the default profile available and check game-level controls whenever a remap behaves unexpectedly.
