There is no universal private-match setup across FPS games. Fortnite, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and Overwatch offer different ways to create or control private play, and a private lobby does not necessarily come with a ready-made 1v1 ruleset. Check whether your game supports two players, how the host controls access, and whether you need to configure teams or rules before inviting your opponent.
What to check before setting up a private 1v1
A private match controls who can enter a game; a 1v1 ruleset controls how the duel plays. Some games let a host change teams or gameplay settings, while others offer a private lobby without guaranteeing that two people can start a match. Treat those as separate questions.
- Can the host create a private session? Some features have host eligibility requirements.
- Can two players start? A game’s minimum-player rule may prevent a duel even when a private lobby exists.
- How do players get in? A game may use an invite, a join code, a shared region, or an access setting.
- Can you create the rules you want? Look for team controls and custom-game options rather than assuming a private lobby is already configured for one-on-one play.
- Are there content or timing restrictions? Map ownership, server region, and joining before launch can matter.
Use the game-specific instructions below. Where a current source does not establish a menu path or a two-player minimum, the instructions say so instead of guessing.
Before you invite anyone, make a quick checklist: identify the exact game and version, decide who will host, confirm the intended map or mode is available, and determine whether the game permits a lobby with only two participants. Then choose an access method and agree on the rules. This avoids a common mix-up: successfully creating a private room is only one part of arranging a playable duel.

The useful comparison is not simply which game has a private option. Consider six separate points: whether the private session also provides configurable duel rules, whether the host needs special eligibility, whether two players meet the minimum, how an opponent joins, what platform, region, or map restrictions apply, and whether everyone must be present before launch. The official guidance answers some of these points for particular games, but not all of them. A missing minimum-player number, for example, should be treated as something to verify—not as permission to assume that a two-person lobby will work.
Access methods also behave differently. A key or code is something the host shares; a friends-only or invite-only setting is an access policy; a shared region is a compatibility condition. They are not interchangeable. Check every condition the chosen game specifies, and keep a separate note of what remains unconfirmed for that title.
Fortnite: create a Battle Royale custom match
Epic’s support instructions describe a custom-match feature for Battle Royale. It requires an entitled host account, so do not assume that every player can create a private match. Epic describes a maximum of 100 players; that capacity does not mean the mode supplies a 1v1 ruleset. The host and participants need to coordinate the server region, key, and launch timing.
- Confirm the host can start custom matches. The account hosting the lobby must have the required entitlement under Epic’s Creator Programs support guidance.
- Select Battle Royale. The documented custom-key flow applies to Battle Royale; it should not be assumed to work in every Fortnite mode.
- Set the same server region for everyone. The host and both participants must use the same region for this flow.
- Create the key. Choose Custom Key, enter a key between 4 and 16 characters, and do not use special characters. Accept the key to apply it.
- Share the key privately and have the opponent join. Participants enter the key in the same region. The key is case-sensitive, so share the capitalization exactly.
- Start only after the opponent is in. Participants must join before the host starts matchmaking. Once the match begins, a late player cannot use this flow to join that match.
For a true duel: Epic’s instructions establish the private-match access flow, not a dedicated 1v1 rules preset. Check the available in-game settings and mode rules before treating the lobby as a balanced one-on-one setup.
The host should handle the coordination in order: check entitlement, select the supported mode, align the region, apply the custom key, and wait for the opponent to join before starting. If someone is missing from the lobby, do not launch and hope they can enter later; the documented flow requires participants to join before matchmaking begins. The 100-player maximum is a capacity figure for the custom match, not a promise about how many players are needed to begin or how to remove other participants to make a duel.
Apex Legends: create a private match with a join code
EA’s FAQ describes a private-match route from the mode-selection menu. The host shares a code, and the lobby supports team management and spectators. However, the cited FAQ passage says that hosts can play multiple games only while the minimum player requirement is met, without giving the number. Do not count on a two-player lobby until you verify the current minimum in the game.

- From the mode-selection menu, open the Private Match tab.
- Select Create Match.
- Reveal the join code and share it with the intended players.
- Have participants use the code to join. The FAQ describes players readying up once in the lobby.
- Set up the sides. The admin can drag players between teams, or players can select a team slot if that option is used.
- If someone is watching rather than playing, the FAQ says observers can spectate.
- Check the in-game minimum before attempting to start with only two participants. The FAQ’s reference to a minimum does not itself establish that a 1v1 lobby satisfies it.
These controls make a private lobby more configurable than simply sharing access, but a join code and team controls are not confirmation that the game will launch with two players. Verify the current lobby requirement before arranging a duel.
Team arrangement is a distinct step from joining: the admin can place players on sides, or participants can choose team slots when that option is used. If your goal is to play rather than watch, check that both participants are in player slots and ready. An observer may be useful for watching, but the existence of a spectator role does not change the match’s minimum-player requirement. The FAQ also ties repeat games to keeping the minimum count satisfied, so confirm that the group can continue before planning a series.
Destiny 2: set up a private Crucible match
Bungie says private Crucible matches can be created and played on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The match leader controls settings under Game Options. Bungie’s guide establishes the supported activity and platforms, but it does not provide a complete current menu walkthrough or a minimum player count, so those details should be checked in-game rather than filled in from assumptions.
- Open the Crucible private-match flow in Destiny 2 and have one player act as the match leader.
- As leader, use Game Options to control the available match settings.
- Before choosing a map, confirm that the players who need access own the release containing it. Bungie says map access in private matches depends on owning the release that contains the selected Crucible map.
- Check the lobby and available settings in the current game client to confirm that the planned 1v1 can be started and configured as intended.
The supported platforms do not remove the map-ownership condition, and private Crucible should not be mistaken for a guarantee that every map is available to every participant.
For a planned duel, settle on a map only after checking access for everyone who will play. A map appearing in someone’s selection is not enough if the other participant does not own the release containing it. Likewise, the leader’s control of Game Options establishes that settings can be managed, but it does not identify a universal minimum player count or confirm that every available setting is suitable for a one-on-one. Use the current lobby to validate both points before inviting an opponent to a scheduled match.

Blizzard has described the Game Browser as an extension of Custom Game mode. Its announcement says players can customize game modes, maps, abilities, movement, health, and damage, then restrict access with Friends Only or Invite Only. That feature description is useful for planning a duel: rules can be adjusted and access can be limited. But the announcement is not current Overwatch 2 click-by-click documentation, so it should not be treated as a reliable guide to today’s exact menu labels or launch sequence.

- In the current game client, look for the custom-game or Game Browser area and confirm the current route to create a game.
- Choose a custom mode and map, then review the available rule controls to configure the kind of duel you want.
- Use the current access controls to restrict entry to the intended players. Blizzard’s announcement describes Friends Only and Invite Only options, but verify which labels and options are present in your version.
- Check the current lobby requirements and start controls before relying on a two-player match.
The announcement supports the broad customization and privacy capabilities above, not a claim that every Overwatch 2 version exposes the same settings in the same place.
The ability to adjust abilities, movement, health, and damage means players can make meaningful rule choices beyond selecting a map. Agree on those settings before the match so both players know what kind of duel they are entering. Privacy settings answer a different question: Friends Only or Invite Only access limits who can enter, while the mode and gameplay controls define the match itself. Because the announcement is older, treat those feature categories as a planning guide and confirm the live labels, available controls, and launch conditions in your current game.
Call of Duty: do not apply an old Black Ops manual to current games
An Activision manual for the original Call of Duty: Black Ops describes a Private Match option for hosting a game with customizable modes. It is historical documentation for that release. It does not establish how to create a private 1v1 in current Black Ops titles, Modern Warfare releases, or Warzone.

Check the exact product and mode you intend to play, especially if you mean Warzone rather than a standard multiplayer release.
Valorant and Counter-Strike 2: confirm current official instructions
Current official setup steps and constraints for Valorant and Counter-Strike 2 are not established here. That is not evidence that either title lacks private or custom play; it means a dependable menu route, access method, or two-player minimum cannot be stated on this basis. Check the current client or official support information for the title and version you use before scheduling a 1v1.

For either game, verify the mechanics that matter to your plan rather than borrowing steps from another FPS: how a lobby is created, how the other player joins, whether a custom match accepts two participants, and which rules can be adjusted. Do not interpret the absence of a confirmed walkthrough as a product limitation, and do not assume a feature from a different title or an old guide applies.

When a private 1v1 will not start
Use the failure point to narrow the problem down. A lobby being private does not guarantee it meets a game’s launch requirements.
- The host cannot create a match: In Fortnite, confirm that the host account has the entitlement required to start custom matches. For other games, check the current version’s host permissions rather than assuming access is universal.
- Your opponent cannot join: In Fortnite, verify the exact case-sensitive key, shared server region, and that the host has not started matchmaking yet. In Apex Legends, recheck the private-match join code.
- The lobby will not launch with two people: Check the current minimum player requirement in the game. EA’s cited Apex FAQ mentions a minimum but does not state its number; the available guidance also does not establish minimums for Destiny 2 or the other titles where no value is given.
- A map is unavailable: In Destiny 2, verify ownership of the release containing that Crucible map.
- The game starts, but it is not a 1v1: Review the team and rule settings. Fortnite’s custom key makes a Battle Royale match private, but it does not itself create a dedicated duel ruleset.
- The menu does not match a guide: Check that the instructions apply to your title and version. In particular, an older Overwatch announcement is feature-level guidance, and the original Black Ops manual is not a current Call of Duty or Warzone guide.
A useful troubleshooting order is to check host eligibility first, then lobby access, then player count, and finally content and rules. This prevents changing a map or recreating a code when the actual blocker is that the host cannot create the session or the game requires more players. If the session is already open, inspect the current lobby state and its start requirements before repeatedly launching it.

No physical product is needed to configure the in-game lobbies described here. A headset, controller, mouse, or keyboard may be useful for ordinary play, but the setup guidance does not establish any peripheral as a requirement for creating a private match. Check the game and lobby requirements first rather than buying equipment in the hope that it resolves an access or minimum-player issue.

Private-match systems, eligibility, and game menus can change with updates. Confirm the live in-game requirements—especially minimum players, account access, and the exact custom-game controls—before arranging a match.

Does a private match automatically create a 1v1?
