A portable Wi‑Fi hotspot shares one device’s internet connection with nearby phones, tablets, laptops or other equipment. To set one up, enable hotspot or tethering on the device that has internet access, give the network a strong password, choose the strongest security mode all of your devices support, and then join it from each client’s Wi‑Fi settings. If the source is using cellular service, hotspot traffic counts against that mobile plan and may be subject to carrier limits or charges.
This guide covers Android phones, iPhone and iPad Personal Hotspot, and Windows Mobile hotspot. It also explains when Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth or USB tethering is the better choice, how to prevent unwanted access, and what to check when a device will not connect.
How do I set up a portable Wi‑Fi hotspot?
Before changing settings, identify the device that will share its connection. A phone normally shares cellular data; a Windows PC can share an existing Wi‑Fi, Ethernet or cellular connection. The sharing device must have an active connection, enough battery for the session, and a plan or network configuration that permits tethering.
Prepare the sharing device
- Confirm that cellular data or the source network works normally on the sharing device.
- Check your mobile provider’s current tethering allowance, separate hotspot data limit and any additional charge. Android guidance from Google and Motorola warns that operators can restrict or bill tethering separately.
- Plug in the device for a long session. Hotspot radios and cellular use can drain a phone faster than ordinary standby.
- Choose a unique network name and a long password that you have not used for another account.
- Plan to turn hotspot sharing off when the last client is finished.
Basic connection sequence
- Open the sharing device’s network or tethering settings.
- Enable its hotspot method, normally Wi‑Fi.
- Review the network name (SSID), password, security mode and, where offered, frequency band.
- On the receiving device, open Wi‑Fi settings, select the hotspot name and enter the password. Supported Android and Windows combinations may also offer a QR-code connection.
- Open a web page or another online service to verify that the client has internet access.
Keep the hotspot private while you configure it. Do not set security to None, and do not publish the password in a public place.

Set the hotspot name and password. If the phone offers a security selector, choose WPA3 when every intended client supports it. If an older laptop, printer or other device cannot join WPA3, select the strongest mixed mode offered or WPA2 with AES. Motorola describes WPA2 (AES) as the broad-compatibility choice and states, using its on-page spelling, “WP3 is the most secure choice.”
Some Android 14-and-later instructions apply only to particular devices or features. Options such as maximum connected devices, an allowed-device list and the exact security modes are model-dependent rather than universal Android controls.

Connect with a QR code
On supported Android phones, the hotspot settings can display a QR code containing the network details. Use the receiving phone’s Wi‑Fi or camera workflow to scan it instead of typing the password. A QR option is not present on every Android release or manufacturer interface, so use the network name and password when it is absent.
Android carrier and data checks
Android’s sharing device uses its own connection. When that connection is cellular, every connected client consumes the phone’s mobile data allowance. Google’s help documentation notes that some operators limit tethering or charge extra; verify the current terms before relying on the hotspot for work, streaming or large downloads.

Apple calls its sharing feature Personal Hotspot. The exact controls can vary with iOS or iPadOS version, but the workflow is the same: open the device’s Personal Hotspot controls, allow other devices to join, note the Wi‑Fi password, and select the hotspot from the client’s Wi‑Fi list.
Default security
Apple documents WPA2/WPA3 Personal as the default Personal Hotspot security on iOS and iPadOS. Leave that default in place when all of your devices connect successfully; it provides newer protection without requiring a compatibility downgrade.
When to use Maximize Compatibility
On iPhone 12 or later, Maximize Compatibility restricts Personal Hotspot to the 2.4 GHz band and WPA2 Personal. Enable it only when a client cannot join the normal hotspot or cannot see it. The setting trades newer-band and WPA3 behavior for broader compatibility with older Wi‑Fi hardware. Turn it back off when it is no longer needed so that clients can use the default WPA2/WPA3 Personal configuration.

Windows can share an existing connection over Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth. Sharing cellular service uses the computer’s cellular data plan, not a phone plan, so check that plan’s allowance and tethering terms.
Configure the hotspot
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Mobile hotspot.
- Under Share my internet connection from, choose the connection that currently provides internet access.
- Under the sharing method, choose Wi‑Fi for normal wireless clients or Bluetooth for a supported nearby device.
- Open Properties and edit the network name, password and band if those controls are available. Save the changes.
- Turn on Mobile hotspot.
- On each client, open Wi‑Fi settings, select the Windows hotspot and enter the password. Supported Windows workflows may also provide a QR code.
The band selector is useful when a client supports only a particular band. If the option is not shown, Windows or the installed wireless adapter is controlling it automatically.
Windows version and security status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 PC can still expose the Mobile hotspot controls, but it no longer receives ordinary security fixes from Microsoft. For a hotspot that handles work credentials or other sensitive traffic, use a supported Windows release and keep its updates current.
How do I connect my laptop to my phone hotspot?
- Enable the phone’s hotspot and leave its name and password visible in the hotspot settings.
- On the laptop, open the Wi‑Fi list from the taskbar or system network settings.
- Select the phone’s hotspot name. Check the spelling carefully if several networks have similar names.
- Enter the hotspot password exactly, including capitalization and symbols, then select Connect.
- Wait for the laptop to show that it is connected, then open a small web page to test internet access.
If the laptop supports the hotspot’s QR workflow, scan the displayed code instead of typing the password. QR support depends on the operating system and device combination; it is not a requirement for joining.

Bluetooth tethering for a laptop
Pair the phone and laptop in their Bluetooth settings first. Enable Bluetooth tethering on the phone and select the phone as the laptop’s Bluetooth network connection. Bluetooth generally reaches a shorter distance and lower throughput than Wi‑Fi, but it can use less power and may be preferable where nearby Wi‑Fi networks create interference.
USB tethering for a laptop
Connect the phone with a data-capable USB cable, enable USB tethering in the phone’s tethering settings, and select the new wired network on the laptop. USB avoids wireless contention and can provide a stable link for a single computer. Android’s help documentation notes that Macs cannot use Android USB tethering, so use Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth for a Mac.
Which hotspot security settings should you use?
Security is determined by the hotspot’s authentication mode and the clients’ ability to use it. Use a password-protected mode and select WPA3 when every client can connect. If one older device fails, move to the strongest mixed mode available or WPA2-AES rather than leaving the network open.
Security choices
| Setting | When to choose it | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| WPA3 Personal | All intended phones, computers and other clients support WPA3. | Strongest option identified in the device guidance, but older clients may not join. |
| WPA2/WPA3 Personal or another mixed mode | The hotspot offers a mixed mode and clients have different generations of Wi‑Fi security support. | Preserves compatibility while allowing newer clients to use WPA3 where implemented; exact behavior depends on the device. |
| WPA2 Personal with AES | An older client cannot connect to WPA3 and no suitable mixed mode works. | Broad compatibility, but it is not the newest available protection. |
| None or open | Do not use for normal hotspot sharing. | Anyone within range can attempt to use the connection, and traffic is not protected by hotspot authentication. |
Apple’s default WPA2/WPA3 Personal behavior and its Maximize Compatibility setting are separate from Android and Windows menus. Do not assume that a setting with the same name behaves identically across manufacturers.
Recommended Free Tools
Password and access controls
- Use a long, random passphrase rather than a phone number, address or easily guessed word.
- Share it only with people who need access, and change it after a temporary session or if it was exposed.
- Review the connected-device list when the hotspot provides one. Set a device limit or allow only selected devices if the model offers those controls.
- Motorola’s guidance says that changing the password after turning the hotspot off disconnects existing access and prevents devices with the old credentials from reconnecting.
- Turn the hotspot off when finished. A password protects a running hotspot, but it does not make leaving an unnecessary access point active risk-free.
Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth or USB: which method fits?
| Method | Best use | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wi‑Fi hotspot | Several nearby phones, tablets or computers. | Convenient, supports multiple clients, and normally offers the best range and speed of the three choices. | Uses more power than Bluetooth and can encounter congestion from nearby networks. |
| Bluetooth tethering | One nearby device, especially when reducing Wi‑Fi interference or power use matters. | Often lower power and less affected by crowded Wi‑Fi channels. | Shorter range, lower throughput and more pairing steps; support varies. |
| USB tethering | A single computer that needs a stable wired connection. | Wired link avoids wireless interference and can be steady for long sessions. | Requires a cable and compatible drivers; Android USB tethering does not work with Macs according to Google’s guidance. |
Choose Wi‑Fi when convenience or several clients matters, Bluetooth when the client is close and modest throughput is acceptable, and USB when a cable is practical and stability is the priority.

Data, battery and carrier costs
A hotspot does not create free internet; it relays the sharing device’s connection. Cellular sharing therefore consumes the mobile plan’s data. A provider may apply a separate hotspot quota, throttle tethered traffic, block tethering on a particular plan or add a fee. These policies vary by carrier and can change, so check the current plan documentation before using a hotspot as a primary connection.
Monitor data usage on the phone or PC when clients may download updates, stream video or synchronize cloud files. A laptop can use far more data than a phone’s ordinary browsing session because background services continue running after it connects.
For long sessions, connect the sharing device to power and keep it in a place with a reliable cellular signal. Disable hotspot sharing as soon as the clients disconnect. These steps reduce unnecessary battery use; they do not change the carrier’s data accounting.
Why won’t my device connect to my hotspot?
Work through the checks below in order. Menu names and available controls vary, so use the closest equivalent on your device.
The hotspot does not appear in the Wi‑Fi list
- Confirm that hotspot sharing is actually on and that the sharing device has cellular data or another working connection.
- Move the client closer to the sharing device and refresh its Wi‑Fi list.
- On an iPhone 12 or later, try Maximize Compatibility if the client cannot see the normal Personal Hotspot. This changes the hotspot to 2.4 GHz and WPA2 Personal.
- On Android or Windows, check whether the hotspot is set to a band the client cannot use. Select a compatible band when the settings expose that choice.
- Temporarily turn Wi‑Fi off and on at the client, then search again.
The network appears but the password is rejected
- Re-enter the password from the sharing device rather than relying on an old saved entry.
- Forget the hotspot network on the client and join it again.
- Check the security mode. An older client may fail with WPA3; use a supported mixed mode or WPA2-AES if necessary.
- If the password was recently changed, ensure the hotspot was turned off and back on as required by the device’s interface, then reconnect every client with the new password.
The client connects but has no internet
- Test a web page on the sharing device itself. If it cannot reach the internet, the hotspot cannot provide internet to clients.
- Check cellular signal, mobile data status and any carrier tethering restriction.
- Disconnect other clients temporarily. A device limit or exhausted hotspot allowance may prevent additional traffic.
- On Windows, verify that Share my internet connection from points to the connection that is actually online.
The connection drops or is too slow
- Keep the sharing device closer to the client and away from obvious sources of radio interference.
- Reduce the number of connected devices and pause large downloads or cloud synchronization.
- Use USB for one computer when a wired link is practical, or try Bluetooth if a crowded Wi‑Fi environment is the problem.
- Keep the sharing device charged and check whether its battery-saving behavior is disabling tethering.
QR code or USB tethering is unavailable
QR connection is an optional feature, not a universal requirement. Join by selecting the network and entering its password. For USB, use a data-capable cable and confirm operating-system support; in particular, Android USB tethering is not supported on Macs in Google’s documented guidance.
Using a dedicated portable hotspot
A separate portable cellular hotspot can be useful when you do not want your phone to act as the access point, when several people need a shared connection, or when a phone must remain available for calls and normal use. The setup principles remain the same: activate the device, configure its network name and password, select the strongest security mode supported by every client, and turn it off when finished.
Before buying or activating one, verify:
- Carrier compatibility and the cellular bands used where you will travel.
- Coverage at the locations where the device will operate.
- The plan’s hotspot allowance, throttling policy and extra charges.
- Supported security modes, especially WPA3 or a secure mixed mode.
- The maximum number of simultaneous clients.
- Whether the device can remain powered or charged during long sessions.
No single portable hotspot is suitable for every carrier or region. Treat the provider’s current compatibility and plan information as more authoritative than a generic model specification.
