To set up a Pixelmon Reforged server, install the Forge server version that matches both your Minecraft client and the Pixelmon build, place the Pixelmon mod in the server’s mods folder, start the server once to create its files, and then edit the generated server-side configuration. Do not configure a multiplayer world from the client menu: those changes affect only your client. Operator and permission commands are version-dependent, so verify them against the documentation for the exact Forge and Pixelmon release you install.

What a Pixelmon server requires

Pixelmon Reforged is a Forge mod, not a standalone server executable. Every player connects with a compatible Minecraft installation, Forge loader and Pixelmon client mod. The server runs the corresponding Forge installation and Pixelmon mod on the host machine or a managed game server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A Minecraft version supported by the Pixelmon Reforged release you selected.
  • The exact Forge version required by that Pixelmon release.
  • A server machine or hosting account with permission to upload files and run Java server processes.
  • The Pixelmon Reforged mod file for the same Minecraft and Forge combination.
  • A client installation using the same mod and loader versions.
  • Access to the server console or control panel for the first launch, shutdowns and operator management.

Compatibility is strict. A server can fail to start, reject a connection or produce missing-content errors when the client uses a different Minecraft version, Forge build or Pixelmon build. Treat the three-part combination—Minecraft version, Forge version and Pixelmon version—as one release unit.

Choose and verify the version combination

Pixelmon discussion pages have displayed headers such as 1.21.1-9.3.9 and 1.16.5-9.1.13. Those are forum headers, not an authoritative compatibility matrix, and they should not be treated as proof that either combination is the current release. Before downloading anything, check the current Pixelmon Reforged release information and its supported Minecraft version on the official Pixelmon site or wiki.

Item to verify What must match Why it matters
Minecraft The version named by the Pixelmon release Mods compiled for one Minecraft branch generally cannot load on another.
Forge The Forge build specified for that Pixelmon release The server and every client must use the same loader family and compatible build.
Pixelmon The same Pixelmon Reforged build on server and clients Different mod files can change registries, networking data and world content.
Other mods Only mods documented as compatible with the selected combination An additional mod can introduce dependency, registry or startup errors.

Record the selected versions before installing. When troubleshooting, compare the server log, client launcher profile and uploaded filenames rather than relying on a remembered version number.

Install the Forge server

  1. Download the matching Forge installer. Use the server installer option for the Minecraft version required by Pixelmon. Do not install Forge for a different Minecraft branch and hope that Pixelmon will bridge the difference.
  2. Create a dedicated server directory. Keep the server in its own folder so that the generated config, mods, world and log files are easy to back up. Avoid running it from a general downloads folder.
  3. Run the installer and select the server installation. Point it at the dedicated directory. A successful installation creates Forge server files and a launch profile or executable appropriate to that Forge release.
  4. Accept Minecraft’s EULA when prompted. Start the server once from the host control panel or the Forge launch command. If the process stops and creates an EULA file, open that file, change the acceptance value as required by Mojang’s terms, save it, and start the server again.
  5. Use the Forge launch entry. A vanilla server command will not load Pixelmon. Select the Forge profile supplied by the installer or the launch option named for the installed Forge version.
  6. Wait for a clean first startup. The initial run creates directories, registries and configuration files. Stop the process from the console after it reaches a ready state rather than killing it while files are being written.

Java memory, firewall and startup syntax differ by operating system and host panel. Use the launch command generated by the Forge installer or the host’s documented Forge template; replacing it with a vanilla command is a common reason for a server that appears to run without loading Pixelmon.

Upload Pixelmon to the server

  1. Download the Pixelmon Reforged file that corresponds to the Minecraft and Forge versions you recorded.
  2. Open the server’s file manager, or connect with FTP/SFTP if the host provides it.
  3. Open the top-level mods directory. If the directory does not exist, start the Forge server once and stop it cleanly before creating it yourself.
  4. Upload the Pixelmon mod file without extracting it. Forge normally expects the mod archive in the mods folder.
  5. Remove duplicate or older Pixelmon files. Keeping two builds in the folder can cause duplicate-mod or dependency errors.
  6. Start the server with the Forge profile and watch the console for Pixelmon loading messages and any dependency failures.

Every player should install the same Pixelmon build in the client-side mods folder and launch the matching Forge profile. A client-only installation does not install the server mod, and uploading a mod to the server does not automatically install it for players.

Let the first Pixelmon launch generate configuration

On the first successful Pixelmon startup, stop the server normally and inspect the generated config directory. The exact layout depends on the Pixelmon generation. An older official-wiki summary describes a config/pixelmon directory containing YAML files, while forum and hosting discussions refer to a single pixelmon.hocon file in the server’s configuration folder. Because those references describe different releases, do not create or rename a file based on a guide written for another version. Edit the file or directory that your own installation generated.

Before changing anything, copy the entire server directory or at least the config folder. A backup lets you restore working settings if a syntax mistake or update changes the format.

Configure Pixelmon on the server

Find the authoritative settings

For a multiplayer world, the server’s configuration is authoritative. Opening a Pixelmon menu in your client and changing a value does not change the world rules for other players. Make edits while the server is stopped unless the release documentation explicitly says a setting can be changed live.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Depending on the release, settings exposed by Pixelmon configuration files include spawn rates, legendary spawn rates, battle rules and loot tables. The key names and nesting are version-specific; copy the spelling and punctuation already present in the generated file instead of importing keys from an older tutorial.

Edit safely

  1. Stop the server and make a dated backup of the current configuration.
  2. Open the generated Pixelmon file in a plain-text editor that does not add rich-text formatting.
  3. Change one related group of values at a time, preserving indentation, quotation marks, braces, commas and data types.
  4. Save the file in its original encoding and filename.
  5. Start the server and read the complete startup log before allowing players to connect.

A malformed HOCON or YAML value can make Pixelmon reject the file. Reports about pixelmon.hocon specifically describe a syntax error followed by a prominent log error and a fallback to default settings on restart. A server that starts is therefore not proof that your changes were accepted: confirm the log and inspect the effective setting in-game.

Apply changes and reload

Some hosting documentation says /pokereload applies Pixelmon changes without a full restart, while forum replies caution that some settings still require a restart. Treat reload as a convenience, not a universal guarantee. After editing, use the reload command only if it exists in your build and the console accepts it; restart the server whenever the log requests a restart or the setting does not visibly change. Never assume a client-side menu update has reloaded the server configuration.

Connect a client and test the world

  1. Install the same Minecraft version, Forge version and Pixelmon build in the client.
  2. Launch the Forge profile once in single-player so the client can create its own folders, then close it.
  3. Enter the server address and port supplied by your host or by the machine running the server.
  4. Join with a test account before inviting a larger group.
  5. Check that Pixelmon items, creatures, battles and the settings you changed behave as expected.
  6. Review both client and server logs if the connection fails; the server log is the authority for missing server-side mods and configuration errors.

Keep a small test area or test world for configuration changes. Spawn-rate and loot changes can be difficult to evaluate in a busy survival world, and a controlled test makes it easier to distinguish a real setting change from normal random variation.

Admin and operator access: what is and is not confirmed

There is no reliable, current Pixelmon-specific permission guide established for every Forge release. Older results describe Bukkit permissions or Sponge-era permission nodes; those systems do not automatically apply to a current Forge server. Do not copy an old PEx command or a Bukkit permissions file into a modern Pixelmon installation.

Use the server’s operator system first

In standard Minecraft server administration, an operator is commonly granted from the server console with a command in the form /op <username>. Whether that command, its permission level and the resulting Pixelmon privileges behave exactly that way depends on the Minecraft, Forge and Pixelmon versions in use. Run it from the console rather than assuming a player can grant privileges to themselves, and verify the result with the version’s current Minecraft and Pixelmon documentation.

Separate Minecraft operator status from Pixelmon permissions

Operator status controls the server’s general command permissions. It does not prove that a particular Pixelmon command exists, is enabled or is safe for ordinary moderators. Before delegating access:

  • Check the command list shown by your exact server build.
  • Test commands with a non-owner account in a disposable world.
  • Give the lowest permission level that performs the required task.
  • Keep console access and file-manager access limited to trusted administrators.
  • Record who received operator status and remove it when it is no longer needed.

If your server uses a separate permission mod or proxy, follow that project’s documentation for the exact Forge and Minecraft versions. A permissions setup designed for Bukkit, Sponge or an old Pixelmon generation can silently fail or expose more access than intended.

Troubleshoot the failures that matter most

The server starts, but Pixelmon is absent

  • Confirm that the process was launched with Forge, not a vanilla profile.
  • Check that the Pixelmon file is directly inside mods, not inside an extracted subfolder.
  • Compare the server’s Minecraft and Forge versions with the Pixelmon file’s requirements.
  • Remove duplicate or stale mod files and restart.

The client cannot join because of a mod or registry mismatch

  • Compare the complete Minecraft, Forge and Pixelmon versions on both sides.
  • Make sure the client is not loading an additional incompatible mod.
  • Read the server and client logs for the first mismatch, not only the final disconnect message.
  • Replace a manually renamed file with the exact release file; changing a filename does not change its compiled version.

Settings revert to defaults

  • Verify that you edited the server’s generated configuration, not a client file.
  • Check the startup log for a HOCON or YAML syntax error.
  • Restore the backup, reapply one change carefully and restart.
  • Do not assume a successful process exit means every value was accepted; look for the mod’s configuration messages.

A reload command appears to do nothing

Some settings are read only during startup. Restart cleanly, then test again. If the command itself is unknown, do not install an old command or permission plugin just to obtain it; consult the documentation for the installed Pixelmon build.

Players can connect but the world behaves unexpectedly

Check whether another mod, a world-specific rule or a server property is affecting the result. Guides sometimes suggest disabling vanilla mob spawning because Pixelmon has its own spawning system, but that recommendation is not confirmed here for every release. Do not change that property blindly; test it in a backup world and follow the instructions for your exact build.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Self-hosting gives you direct access to Forge files, logs and configuration, but you are responsible for operating-system updates, backups, firewall rules, uptime and recovery. A managed host usually supplies a control panel, file manager and scheduled server process, reducing maintenance work while limiting you to the host’s supported Java versions, memory limits and mod controls.

Decision Self-hosted machine Managed game host
File access Full local access to Forge, mods, configs and logs Usually file-manager or FTP/SFTP access, subject to the host
Maintenance You handle operating system, Java, firewall and backups The provider handles the platform; you still manage Pixelmon files and settings
Version control You choose the Forge and Pixelmon files Panel templates may restrict or preselect versions
Troubleshooting Complete console and system logs Server logs are available, but host-level logs may not be
Cost information Uses your existing hardware and internet connection Pricing, memory limits and renewal terms vary by provider and were not established here

Whichever route you choose, retain an offline copy of the world and configuration. A managed panel is not a substitute for an independent backup.

Updating Pixelmon without breaking the world

  1. Read the release notes and confirm the target Minecraft and Forge versions.
  2. Stop the server normally.
  3. Back up the world, config, mods and launch files.
  4. Remove the old Pixelmon file and upload only the target build.
  5. Update the client profile to the same combination before testing.
  6. Start the server and inspect the complete log for migration, missing dependency or configuration errors.
  7. Join with a test account and verify world content before opening the server to everyone.

Never overwrite a working backup with the first startup after an update. Keep at least one pre-update copy until the new build has been tested and players can connect normally.

Final setup checklist

  • ☐ Minecraft, Forge and Pixelmon versions were verified as one compatible combination.
  • ☐ The Forge server installer, not a vanilla server, created the server profile.
  • ☐ The Pixelmon mod is in the server’s top-level mods folder.
  • ☐ The server completed one clean startup and generated its configuration.
  • ☐ Server-side settings were edited in the generated configuration directory.
  • ☐ A backup exists before every configuration or version change.
  • ☐ Startup logs were checked for syntax errors and fallback-to-default messages.
  • ☐ Client installations use the same Forge and Pixelmon builds.
  • ☐ Operator access was granted only after checking the exact version’s command and permission behavior.
  • ☐ A test account and test world were used before public play.

The reliable pattern is simple: match the versions, launch Forge, let Pixelmon generate its files, edit only the server configuration, and treat logs as the final authority. Pixelmon-specific admin commands and configuration keys change between releases, so verify those details against the documentation for the exact build rather than carrying forward an old Bukkit, Sponge or Pixelmon tutorial.
