The safest way to move your logins is to prepare the new vault first, confirm that it can read your old manager’s export, create one controlled export, import it once, verify important accounts and item types, then enable recovery protections and delete the exposed export file. Keep the old manager until you have tested the new vault.
What you need before moving anything
A password-manager migration is not just a file transfer. Export formats differ, some item types may be omitted, and a plaintext export can expose every password in your vault. Decide where the data will go and how you will recover the new account before creating an export.
Choose the destination around your real devices
List the phones, tablets, computers and browsers you actually use. Confirm that the manager has an official app or extension for each one, and install those applications only from the provider’s own distribution channels. A manager that works on one computer but not on your primary phone can leave you locked out or tempted to keep unsafe copies elsewhere.

Do not choose a service because it is broadly described as “best.” For this migration, the useful questions are whether it accepts your source format, supports the item types you need, works on your devices and offers a recovery process you can maintain.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Inventory what is in the old vault
Before exporting, note the categories you rely on:
- Website usernames and passwords
- Secure notes and software licenses
- Payment cards and identity records
- Custom fields and attached information
- One-time recovery codes
- Passkeys
- Items in shared folders, collections or an organization vault
This inventory becomes your verification checklist. A migration can report success while omitting a field, passkey or shared item that the selected format cannot carry.
Understand the new account’s recovery model
Create the destination account and read its current instructions for the master password, multifactor authentication (MFA), account recovery and emergency access, if offered. CISA advises users to understand how the master password and account recovery work before relying on a password manager. Recovery is provider-specific; do not assume that a forgotten master password can be reset in the same way as an email password.
Check source-to-destination compatibility
Look up the official migration instructions for the exact pair of products you are using. The available route may be a standard CSV file, a provider-specific file, or a direct Credential Exchange transfer on supported devices and operating-system versions. Direct exchange is not automatically available on every phone.

| Check | Why it matters | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Export format | The destination may accept only particular file types or column layouts. | Whether the source’s CSV, JSON or provider-specific export is listed in the destination’s import menu. |
| Device and operating system | Direct transfers and some import tools are limited by platform or version. | Support for your current phone, computer and browser; do not infer support from another device. |
| Item coverage | Passwords, notes, cards, custom fields, passkeys and shared items may follow different paths. | Which categories are imported, transformed or excluded. |
| Vault or collection target | An import into the wrong personal or organization vault can expose or misplace data. | The exact destination vault and, for shared data, the intended collection or team space. |
| Recovery and MFA | You need a way back into the new vault if a device is lost or the master password is unavailable. | Supported MFA methods, recovery instructions and where recovery information will be stored. |
1Password documents broad import support from browsers and named password managers, while Bitwarden documents standard file import and Credential Exchange. Those capabilities do not establish that every other source, destination, device or item type will transfer identically.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Set up the destination before exporting
- Install the official applications. Add the desktop or mobile app and browser extension you will use. Sign in and confirm that the vault opens on your primary devices.
- Create the account and master password. Use a long, unique master password that is not reused anywhere else. Store it according to the provider’s recovery guidance; the manager cannot protect you from a master password that you cannot recall.
- Configure an initial MFA method. Choose a method the manager supports and that you can access during a device change. A physical security key is optional and useful only when the manager supports security-key MFA and you have a separate recovery route.
- Choose the destination vault. Decide whether the import belongs in your personal vault or an organization/shared collection. Confirm the selection immediately before importing.
- Open the import instructions. Keep the provider’s current help page or in-app import screen available so you can match the required format and any export password.
Export your old logins without creating a second breach risk
Export only when you are ready to complete the transfer. An export is usually a readable file, not a protected backup. 1Password states: “Exported data files are not encrypted. They are stored in plaintext.” Anyone who can open that file can read the passwords inside it.
Create the export
- Open the old manager or browser’s export command.
- Select the format that the destination explicitly supports. If the destination offers a provider-specific route, use that rather than guessing at a generic format.
- If the source lets you protect the export with a password, record that password in a temporary, controlled location; you will need it during import.
- Save the file to a local folder you control, not to a shared folder or synchronized online drive.
Control the file while it exists
- Do not email the export.
- Do not upload it to online storage or send it through a chat service.
- Do not leave it in a downloads folder where other users or automatic backups may reach it.
- Do not open or edit it in a spreadsheet or text editor unless the provider’s instructions require it; doing so can alter fields or create additional copies.
- Keep the old manager available, but do not make additional exports unless the first file is demonstrably unusable.
1Password’s export guidance specifically warns against emailing export files or storing them online and advises deleting them when finished. Treat the file as a temporary secret, not as a long-term backup.
Import once into the intended vault
Inspect the destination before repeating an import. A slow interface, an unfamiliar item count or a warning does not necessarily mean that nothing was added.
- Select the vault or collection. Choose the personal vault or organization collection that should own the records.
- Choose the source format. Match the file type to the source application, not merely to the extension shown in the file browser.
- Select the export file. If it is a password-protected JSON export, enter the export password when requested.
- Start the import and wait for its completion message. Keep the application open until it reports a result or an error.
- Inspect the vault before trying again. Search for several known accounts and check the item count or import log if the application provides one.
Bitwarden warns: “Importing does not check for duplicates. If you import the same file more than once or import items already in your vault, duplicate items will be created.” Treat a second import as a deliberate recovery action, not a harmless retry. If only part of the file arrived, identify the cause first and import only the missing records if the provider supports that approach.

Verify the migration before abandoning the old manager
A successful import message proves that the file was processed, not that every record and field is usable. Verify the accounts you would need during an emergency or device replacement before deleting anything from the source.
Use a priority-based test
- Check your primary email account. Confirm the username, password and any saved MFA or recovery-code fields.
- Check financial and identity services. Open the record, confirm the login address and test a sign-in without copying from the old manager.
- Check work, school and government accounts. These often have organization-specific MFA or shared ownership requirements.
- Check several ordinary accounts. Test different domains and any records that use custom fields or notes.
- Check shared access. Confirm that family, team or organization members can see the records they need in the correct collection.
Audit item types and fields
| Item or field | Verification action | Why it can fail |
|---|---|---|
| Passwords and usernames | Open representative records and sign in to critical services. | Column mapping or unsupported source formats can place values in the wrong fields. |
| Secure notes | Open several notes and compare their full text with the source. | Some importers support login records but not every note structure. |
| Cards and identity records | Check every required field, including expiration dates and addresses. | Generic CSV formats may expose only a limited set of fields. |
| Custom fields | Compare labels and values in records that depend on them. | Unrecognized columns can be dropped or converted to notes. |
| Recovery codes | Confirm that codes are present and readable, then store them according to the destination’s guidance. | They may be treated as notes or omitted by a narrow login schema. |
| Passkeys | Check the destination’s passkey area and test a passkey sign-in on a supported device. | Passkeys are not present in every export route. |
| Shared items | Sign in as an appropriate member and verify collection permissions. | Personal-vault imports may not carry organization ownership or sharing rules. |
1Password notes that its CSV export contains limited fields and that desktop export does not export passkeys; its mobile Credential Exchange export can include passkeys. Its instructions for importing from Bitwarden state that passkeys and items in shared collections are not imported by that route. These examples show why the exact source, destination, platform and format must be checked rather than assuming a complete transfer.
Finish MFA and recovery setup
Once the critical records work in the new vault, complete the account-security setup before cleaning up the old one.

MFA adds protection beyond a username and password. Enable a method documented by the destination provider, and make sure you can use it after losing your primary phone or reinstalling the app. CISA points users toward phishing-resistant MFA and FIDO resources; a security key is relevant only when the manager supports it and you have a recovery plan for a lost key.

Store recovery information separately
Follow the provider’s instructions for recovery codes, emergency access or account-recovery contacts. Do not place the only recovery method inside the locked vault it is meant to recover. Keep the recovery information in a location with a different failure mode from your everyday device, while still protecting it from casual access.
Test the recovery path
Read the actual recovery steps and identify what you would need if the phone, browser profile or authenticator were unavailable. Some services require a waiting period or approval from another person; knowing that in advance is part of setting up the manager safely.
Delete temporary exports and retire the old vault carefully
- Confirm access again. Sign in to your highest-priority accounts from the new manager and verify shared collections.
- Delete the export file. Remove it from the local folder and empty the operating system’s trash or recycle bin.
- Remove unintended copies. Check downloads, desktop folders, temporary directories and any backup or synchronization location where the file may have been copied.
- Clean old saved credentials. After the new vault works, remove obsolete browser-saved passwords and old-manager entries you no longer need. Do not delete records that are still required for an unverified account.
- Sign out or uninstall the old manager when appropriate. For a shared vault, coordinate with other users before removing access.
Bitwarden specifically directs users to delete the exported file after import. Deleting the file reduces exposure, but it does not prove that no copy exists; review the locations you used during the transfer.
Troubleshoot common migration failures
The destination says the file is unsupported
Stop and return to the exact source-to-destination instructions. You may have selected the wrong source type, used a browser export where a manager export was required, or chosen a route limited to another platform. Do not rename the extension and try again; that changes the label, not the file structure.

The import appears empty
Check that you selected the intended vault, selected the matching format and supplied any export password. Search for a known login rather than relying only on the displayed count. If the importer created some records, do not repeat the entire file until you understand what happened, because duplicate records may result.
Passwords arrived but notes or fields did not
Compare the destination’s supported field list with your inventory. Export a different supported format only if the provider documents it, and preserve the original vault until the missing information has another safe home. For a small number of critical records, manually recreate the omitted notes or fields and verify them individually.
Passkeys are missing
Check whether the source can export passkeys and whether the destination supports the required transfer route on your device and operating-system version. A standard desktop CSV may not contain passkeys even when a mobile Credential Exchange route can include them. Keep the old passkey-capable setup until you have tested passkey sign-in from the new one.
Shared items are absent or in the wrong place
Confirm that you imported into the organization or shared collection rather than a personal vault. Review membership and permissions separately; a file import generally cannot recreate every sharing rule. Ask the collection owner to verify access before removing the old shared vault.
You imported twice
Do not keep importing in an attempt to repair the list. Search for duplicate usernames and URLs, identify which records are current, and merge or delete duplicates carefully. Preserve unique notes, recovery codes and custom fields before removing an entry.
