The safest first-day setup for a new Vivo phone is: connect it to a trusted network, choose deliberately what to restore, sign in to the Google account you will keep, add a Vivo account only if you need Vivo services, create a private screen lock, configure Find My Device, install only official updates, and then review privacy, backup, notifications, location, and app permissions.
Vivo phones use different Funtouch OS releases, models, and regional editions. Menu names and the availability of fingerprint unlock, face unlock, app locking, app hiding, cloud services, and account sign-up methods can therefore differ. When a path below is not visible, use the Settings search field or consult the support information for your exact model rather than applying a path from another Vivo phone.
What to have ready before you start
Setup is easier if you gather the information the phone will ask for before you remove your old device from service.
- A trusted Wi-Fi network or an active mobile connection. Wi-Fi is preferable for restoring apps and downloading system updates.
- The Google account you intend to keep on the phone. Have its password and access to its recovery phone or recovery email available.
- Your previous phone or backup credentials if you want to transfer contacts, messages, photos, apps, or settings.
- A screen-lock method you can remember. A private PIN or password is the fallback for biometric unlocking and for situations in which Android requires the main lock.
- Time to install updates and test recovery. Do not rush through prompts simply to reach the home screen.
Keep the old phone available until you have checked that the data you actually need is present on the Vivo. A transfer screen can show categories of data without making clear which individual apps, accounts, or app-specific data will return.

Follow the setup wizard without accepting everything blindly
1. Power on and connect
Turn on the phone and follow the on-screen setup prompts. Select a trusted Wi-Fi network or continue with mobile data if that is your only option. Read each screen that describes terms, permissions, backup, or transfer rather than tapping through automatically.
The setup wizard may ask whether to copy data from another device or restore from a backup. That choice is not permanent in the sense that you can never add data later, but changing the scope after setup can require separate app-by-app work. Decide what you want before confirming.
2. Decide what to restore
Review the categories offered by the transfer or restore process. Typical choices can include apps, contacts, messages, photos, videos, call history, and some device settings, but the exact list depends on the source phone, backup, Android version, and Vivo model.
Restore only what you recognize. A clean start is often preferable when the old phone contains unused apps, obsolete accounts, or settings you no longer understand. If you restore broadly, expect to revisit permissions and notifications because restored apps may retain or request access that is no longer appropriate.
3. Confirm the result before moving on
When setup finishes, open the launcher and check that the expected contacts, photos, messages, and essential apps are present. Do not erase or trade in the old phone until this check is complete and you can sign in to important services on the Vivo.
Choose between restoring data and starting fresh

There is no universally correct choice. The safe rule is to inspect the restore summary, keep the old device available, and verify the result before deleting anything from the source.
Sign in to Google and secure account recovery
Use the Google account you actually intend to keep
Sign in to the Google account that should provide Google Play and other Google services on this phone. If several accounts appear during transfer, check the address before accepting one. The account you use here is also central to locating, protecting, or erasing the phone through Google’s device-finding service.

Check recovery information while you still have access
After signing in, review the account’s recovery phone number and recovery email. Replace outdated details and complete any available security checks while you can receive verification messages. A recovery method that belongs to a disconnected number or an inaccessible mailbox can turn a simple password problem into a longer account-recovery process.

Keep the account password private. Do not record it where another person can read it, and do not rely on the Vivo’s saved session as your only way to regain access.
Verify Play access
Open Google Play and confirm that it recognizes the intended account. If Play asks you to sign in again, resolve that before assuming that apps failed to restore. An account can be present in Android settings while a particular Google service still needs confirmation.
Add a Vivo account only for services you want
A Vivo account is separate from a Google account. Consider creating or signing in to one if you want Vivo-specific services such as Vivo cloud synchronization or device-management features. It is not required simply because the phone runs Android.

On supported versions, Vivo support says a Google account may be usable as a sign-in method for a Vivo account, but that option will not necessarily appear on every model or in every country. Follow the account screen presented on your phone and read which services will be enabled.
Decide what should synchronize
For each Vivo service, identify what data it will store or synchronize before enabling it. Synchronization can make a replacement phone easier to configure, but it also places selected data in an online account and may consume network or storage resources. Enable only the categories that solve a real problem for you.
Create the screen lock before enabling convenience unlocks
Choose a memorable private PIN or password
Set a screen lock during setup or immediately afterward. A PIN or password should be hard for another person to guess but memorable enough that you will not need to write it where it can be exposed. Never share it with someone merely because they need to make a call or use an app.
The main screen lock remains the fallback even when biometric unlock is available. Android may require the PIN or password after a restart, after certain security events, or when the phone has been unused for a period.

If your Vivo offers fingerprint unlock, enroll fingerprints in the security settings and follow the on-screen placement instructions. Clean, dry fingers and a clean sensor generally make enrollment more reliable. If you later add a tempered-glass protector, check its model compatibility: Vivo documents that some protectors can cause fingerprint enrollment or recognition problems.

Use face unlock as an additional option, not your only protection
Some Vivo models and regional editions provide face unlock; others do not. If the option exists, read its description and understand when the phone will still demand the primary screen lock. Face recognition can be convenient, but it should not replace a private PIN or password.
Turn on and test Find My Device
Find My Device is useful only when the phone is configured to be found. Before you depend on it, confirm the account, connectivity, location, and service requirements.
Required conditions
The Vivo phone manual identifies these requirements for finding, protecting, or erasing the phone:

- Find My Device is enabled.
- The phone is signed in to a Google account.
- The phone can reach a network.
- Location access is available.
- The phone is visible through Google Play.
These conditions explain why a powered-off, disconnected, unsigned-in, or otherwise unavailable phone may not appear when you need it.
Check the configuration
- Open Settings and use its search field for Find My Device, or open the Google-related security area if your Funtouch OS version groups the setting there.
- Confirm that the service is enabled and that the displayed Google account is the one you intend to use.
- Confirm that location access is available and that the phone can reach the internet.
- Open Google’s device-finding service from another device or browser and check whether this Vivo appears. The exact presentation can change, so treat the appearance of the phone and its recent connection as the practical test.
Understand the protect and erase choices
Remote actions are a last resort. Protecting a missing phone can help prevent casual access, while remote erase is intended to protect data when recovering the device is less important than removing its contents. Do not treat a Google account reset or a remote erase as reversible; before issuing an erase command, consider whether you still need the information stored locally and whether another copy exists.
Install updates through official Vivo or Android channels
Check from the phone first
Open Settings and search for System update, Software update, or a similarly named option. If an update is offered, read its version information and installation notes. Menu wording and update timing can differ by model, country, carrier, and Funtouch OS release.
Use exact-model support information when the phone cannot update normally
If the phone’s update screen reports an error, consult Vivo’s official support information for the exact model and region. Do not install a package intended for a different model, country edition, or hardware variant.

Avoid unofficial recovery files, modified packages, and instructions that bypass the phone’s normal verification. Back up important data before installing an update and use Wi-Fi where practical. Keep the phone powered sufficiently and do not interrupt an installation once it has started.
After an update
Allow the phone to restart fully, then test mobile or Wi-Fi connectivity, calls, messages, Google Play, fingerprint or face unlock, and any essential app. An update can move a setting or change its label, so use Settings search if a familiar path no longer works.
Review privacy, permissions, and app controls
Audit permissions by purpose
Open the privacy or permission-management area in Settings and review which apps can use location, camera, microphone, contacts, files, phone functions, and notifications. Choose the narrowest permission that still supports the app’s purpose. For example, an app that only needs your location while you are using it does not automatically need continuous access.
Permission names and controls differ across Funtouch OS releases. If an app stops working after a restriction, read the reason it gives before restoring broad access. You can often allow one permission at a time and retest.
Decide whether to use app lock
Some Vivo editions include an app-lock feature. It can add a second barrier around selected apps, but availability and behavior vary. If you enable it, choose apps containing sensitive information and confirm how the feature handles notifications, biometric unlock, and recovery if you forget the app-lock credential.
Use app hiding cautiously
Some Vivo phones also provide an app-hiding option. Vivo notes that hidden apps may stop receiving messages while they are hidden. Do not hide an app that must receive time-sensitive calls, messages, authentication codes, or alerts unless you have tested the behavior and accepted the delay.

Backup and synchronization solve different problems. A backup is intended to help restore data after loss or replacement; synchronization keeps selected information aligned across devices or services. Review both Google and any Vivo service separately.

- Keep: data whose loss would be difficult to recreate, such as essential contacts or irreplaceable photos, when the service and storage arrangement meet your needs.
- Review: app data, device settings, and media categories that may consume storage or include information you do not want online.
- Disable: categories that duplicate another trusted copy or create a privacy cost you do not accept.
After changing a backup choice, look for a recent backup or synchronization status rather than assuming the setting worked immediately. A successful sign-in does not prove that every category has finished uploading.

Set notifications, location, and everyday behavior
Notifications
Keep alerts for calls, messages, account security, and other time-sensitive services. Silence or limit apps that produce noise without helping you. Review lock-screen notification content if other people may see the phone; hiding message details can protect privacy while preserving an alert that something arrived.
Location
Location is useful for maps, finding the phone, weather, transport, and other features, but not every app needs it. Keep the access needed for Find My Device and services you trust, then review individual app access instead of granting every request automatically.
Battery and background activity
If an app must deliver messages or security alerts promptly, check whether the phone’s battery-management controls restrict it in the background. Conversely, do not exempt every app: unrestricted background activity can increase battery and data use. Choose exceptions based on the service’s purpose.

- Wi-Fi or mobile data connects reliably.
- The intended Google account appears in Google Play.
- Google recovery phone and email information is current.
- Any Vivo account is optional, intentional, and configured only for needed services.
- A private PIN or password unlocks the phone.
- Fingerprint or face unlock, if available, works without removing the fallback lock.
- Find My Device is enabled and the phone appears as reachable when tested.
- Important contacts, photos, messages, and apps are present or deliberately omitted.
- The phone reports current official software for its model, or an available update is scheduled for a suitable time.
- Permissions, notification visibility, location access, backup, and synchronization match your preferences.
- The old phone has not been erased until this list is complete.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The setup wizard cannot connect to Wi-Fi
Check the network password, move closer to the access point, and try another trusted network. If mobile data is available, use it temporarily, then return to Wi-Fi before restoring large amounts of data or downloading updates.
Restored apps are missing or incomplete
Confirm that you used the intended Google account, open Google Play, and check the restore summary. Some app data is controlled by the app provider and may require a separate sign-in or backup. Do not assume that reinstalling an app recreates information that was never included in the source backup.
You cannot use a fingerprint or face unlock
Unlock with the primary PIN or password first. Recheck whether the model supports the biometric method, clean the sensor or camera area, and consider whether a newly installed screen protector is interfering with fingerprint recognition. Re-enroll only after confirming the screen lock remains available.
The Vivo account option is absent
That can be a regional, model, or software-version difference. Continue with the Google account and core security setup, then consult official Vivo information for the exact edition before changing region settings or installing anything unofficial.
Find My Device does not show the phone
Check power, network access, location, Google sign-in, Find My Device status, and Google Play visibility. A phone that is offline or powered down cannot provide a current location. Do not issue a remote erase merely because the map is temporarily stale.
An update fails or the phone behaves differently afterward
Record the model and current software version, reconnect to a stable network, and use the phone’s official update screen or exact-model Vivo support instructions. Avoid recovery packages from unofficial sources. If a setting moved, search Settings by function rather than relying on a path from another Funtouch OS release.
When to revisit the setup
Recheck the phone after you have used it for several days. You will then know which notifications are distracting, which apps genuinely need location or background access, whether backup is completing, and whether a hidden or locked app is interfering with messages. Treat this as a targeted adjustment, not a reason to enable every available feature.
