Set up a new TV in this order: complete the platform’s initial wizard, connect the network, install updates, choose a sensible picture preset, select the correct audio route, and review account, voice, advertising, and viewing-data permissions. Menu names and available features vary by brand, model, software release, and country, so use your TV’s model-specific manual whenever a label or path differs.
Before you turn the TV on
A few minutes of preparation prevents most first-day problems. Keep these items nearby:
- The remote control and fresh batteries or a charged remote.
- Your Wi-Fi network name and password, or an Ethernet cable if you plan to use wired networking.
- Credentials for any account you actually intend to use on the television.
- The manuals for the television, soundbar or receiver, and any streaming device.
- A clear view of the television’s HDMI ports. If a streamer is already connected, note its HDMI input so you can select it after setup.
Place the set where the ventilation openings are not blocked. If you are mounting it, finish the physical installation and connect power before beginning the software wizard. Do not assume the same remote shortcut or settings path works on every television, even when two sets use the same operating-system family.
Choose an initial setup method
Many current televisions offer a phone-assisted wizard, while all supported models provide some form of remote-based setup. The available choices depend on the platform, model, and region.

Google’s setup guidance notes that some regions or manufacturers may add terms, conditions, or charges. Read each screen rather than accepting a prompt automatically. If you are setting up a Google TV device, the full smart experience generally requires a Google Account plus Wi-Fi or Ethernet, although basic mode is available on some devices.
Complete the first-run wizard
- Select language, country, and region. These choices can affect available apps, broadcast standards, privacy notices, and content services. Select the country in which the television is being used rather than guessing based on where it was manufactured.
- Pair the remote if prompted. Keep the remote close to the television and follow the on-screen instructions. If pairing fails, replace the batteries, restart the set, and repeat the procedure from the model’s manual.
- Choose phone-assisted or manual setup. If you use a phone, verify that you are pairing with the intended television. If you use the remote, enter the network password carefully; similar characters such as zero and the letter O are easy to confuse.
- Sign in only where it is useful. An account may synchronize profiles, installed apps, recommendations, and activity across signed-in devices. It is not automatically required for every viewing source.
- Read agreements and permissions. Separate service terms, voice permissions, personalized-ad choices, and viewing-information requests may appear on different screens.
- Allow the wizard to finish before changing picture or sound settings. Some televisions install a software update or restart during setup, and later menus can change after the update.
If you are using a streaming box or stick rather than the television’s built-in apps, select the HDMI input where it is connected after the wizard ends. The TV’s own account prompts may still appear even if most viewing will come from that external device.
Connect the TV to the network
Network access enables streaming, app downloads, voice services, automatic updates, and some picture or recommendation features. Connect the set to the network you actually intend to use, then verify the connection before moving on.
Wi-Fi setup
- Open the television’s Network, Connections, or similarly named settings page. The exact location is model-specific.
- Select wireless or Wi-Fi, choose your network name, and enter the password.
- Wait for the television to report an internet connection, not merely a connection to the router.
- If your router offers separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names, note which one the TV joined. Use 5 GHz when the TV and router support it and the television is close enough for a stable signal.
Some Google TV setup documents describe 5 GHz as required for particular devices and do not support WPA2-Enterprise on the documented setup path. Treat those as platform-specific requirements, not rules for every smart TV. A home network using enterprise authentication, a captive portal, or unusual DNS controls may need a different connection method or administrator assistance.
Ethernet setup
Connect an Ethernet cable from the router or network switch to the television’s LAN port, then select wired networking if the setup screen asks. Ethernet is a practical alternative when the router is nearby, the wireless signal is weak, or high-bitrate video repeatedly buffers. Check that the television actually has an Ethernet port; not every thin display includes one.

If the connection fails
- Recheck the network name and password, then restart both the router and television.
- Move the router or access point closer, or reduce walls and metal obstructions between it and the TV.
- Try the other Wi-Fi band if your equipment provides both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
- Use Ethernet when Wi-Fi remains unreliable.
- Test another device on the same network. If several devices are offline, the issue is probably the router or internet service rather than the television.
Install system and app updates
After networking is working, open the TV’s System, About, Support, or Software Update area and check for updates. The wording and location differ by manufacturer. Install the update, allow the television to restart, and check again if the set reports that another restart is required.
Updates can change menu labels, add or remove platform features, improve compatibility with external audio equipment, and correct network or app failures. Do not unplug the television while an update is being installed. If an update repeatedly fails, confirm stable network access and consult the model’s support instructions for USB or recovery procedures rather than using a file intended for another model.
Choose picture settings for your room and content
Start with a preset instead of entering arbitrary brightness, contrast, sharpness, or color-temperature numbers. Open the television’s Picture or Picture & Sound settings and preview the available modes with the type of content you watch most.

LG support describes choosing a preset according to environment, preference, or video type. Sony guides use examples such as Cinema and Game, while noting that options vary by model. Samsung’s Intelligent Mode exists only on select models and can analyze surroundings, the content being watched, and usage patterns. Those examples illustrate why one preset cannot be declared universally best.
Adjust one control at a time
If the starting preset is close but not comfortable, change one setting, watch the same scene for a few minutes, and record what changed. Brightness generally affects the visibility of dark content, while backlight or panel-light controls may alter overall luminance; the labels and relationships differ by model. Sharpness set too high can add outlines to text and faces. Color temperature changes the overall warmth of the image.

Leave advanced controls at their defaults until you understand what they do. Dynamic contrast, local dimming, motion smoothing, noise reduction, HDR tone mapping, and automatic brightness can interact, so changing several at once makes it difficult to identify the cause of an unwanted result. If a control is missing or named differently, use the television’s operating instructions for that model rather than copying values from another set.

Many televisions remember picture settings separately for each HDMI input, app, resolution, or HDR mode. A picture that looks correct in a built-in app may not match a game console or cable box. Check each source you use and confirm whether the TV is applying a separate mode for HDR or gaming.
Set up sound: TV speakers, headphones, or external audio
Decide first where you want sound to come from. In the television’s Sound, Audio Output, or Sound Out menu, choose the built-in TV speakers, paired headphones, a soundbar, or a receiver. LG, for example, documents a sound-out choice between TV speakers and external audio equipment; other brands use different labels.
Using the built-in speakers
Select TV speakers and play a familiar program. Adjust volume and, if available, choose a dialogue or standard sound mode that suits the room. Disable a sound enhancement only if it creates echo, harshness, or delayed speech; there is no universal setting that is best for every program.
Connecting a soundbar or receiver with ARC/eARC
ARC, or Audio Return Channel, lets the TV send audio back to a compatible soundbar or receiver through the HDMI port specifically marked ARC or eARC. Connect that designated TV port to the matching ARC/eARC port on the audio device; a different HDMI input may carry video but not return TV audio.

- Turn off both devices before making the HDMI connection.
- Connect the cable to the labeled ARC/eARC ports.
- Turn on the soundbar or receiver, then the TV.
- Set the TV’s audio output to HDMI ARC/eARC or external receiver.
- Enable HDMI control or CEC if you want the TV remote to coordinate power and volume. The feature may have a brand-specific name.
- Play content from a built-in app and confirm that sound comes from the external device.
CEC can coordinate power and input switching, but behavior depends on every device in the HDMI chain. If the soundbar repeatedly switches inputs, turns on unexpectedly, or loses audio, test with other HDMI devices disconnected and consult both manuals. A troubleshooting page that shows a particular menu path for a TCL 6-Series television is an example for that device, not a universal route for all TVs.
Select only supported audio formats
Choose Auto, Pass-through, PCM, Dolby, DTS, or another format only when the television and connected audio equipment support it. Google’s help recommends selecting supported formats because an unsupported choice can cause audio or video problems. If you get silence, intermittent sound, or missing channels, temporarily select PCM or the device’s documented compatible format, then test again.

Privacy choices are part of setup, not an afterthought. Pause at each onboarding screen and distinguish between services you need and optional personalization.

Google explains that profiles can sync media and activity across signed-in devices and that Google TV or Android TV may display labeled advertisements. Some televisions also offer a basic mode that avoids account and/or internet setup, but this is available only on certain devices and limits smart functions.

LG’s corporate explanation says automatic-content-recognition information may be used for audience segmentation and viewing or audience-trend analysis where the feature is available and enabled. These examples are reasons to inspect the current privacy controls for your own model, not evidence that every television handles data in the same way.

Do not assume that declining one named feature stops every form of data processing. Account services, app providers, diagnostics, advertising systems, and viewing-information controls can be separate. Revisit the TV’s privacy or terms menu after setup and read the current notice for your country.
Verify the finished setup
- The TV shows the intended Wi-Fi network or a wired connection, and a streaming app can reach the internet.
- The software-update screen reports that the system is current, or clearly identifies an update that still needs to install.
- Each frequently used HDMI input displays a picture and uses the expected picture mode.
- Audio comes from the intended speakers, and ARC/eARC and CEC behave as expected if an external system is connected.
- The remote changes volume and power on the correct device without unexpected input switching.
- Your account, voice, recommendation, advertising, and viewing-information choices match what you intended.
- Any microphone mute indicator, physical switch, or privacy status shown by the TV is understood by everyone who uses it.
Common first-day problems and fixes
The TV cannot find the Wi-Fi network
Confirm that the router is broadcasting the network name, move the TV closer, and restart the router and TV. If separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks exist, try the band supported by your model. Use Ethernet when the wireless signal remains unreliable.
Apps work on another device but not on the TV
Check that the television itself reports internet access, install pending system updates, and restart it. If the TV uses a child, guest, or restricted profile, verify that app installation and playback are permitted for that profile.

The soundbar is connected but silent
Confirm the cable is in the ports labeled ARC or eARC, select the corresponding external-audio output, and check that the soundbar is on the correct input. Temporarily disconnect other HDMI devices, disable and re-enable CEC, and select an audio format documented as supported by both devices.
The picture looks too bright, dark, blue, or artificial
Return to a Cinema, Movie, Standard, or equivalent preset, then change one control at a time. Check whether the problem occurs only on one HDMI input, only with HDR, or only in a particular app. Consult the model guide before changing advanced processing controls.
You accepted a privacy choice too quickly
Open the TV’s privacy, terms, account, voice, advertising, or viewing-information settings and review each category separately. If a control is not available on the television, check the account’s web privacy dashboard and the manufacturer’s current documentation for your country. No single switch should be assumed to disable all collection.
What a good first-day setup looks like
A properly configured TV is connected by the most reliable practical network route, updated, using a picture preset suited to the room and content, sending sound to the device you actually want to hear, and signed in only where the added convenience is worth the account and privacy trade-off. Keep the model manual accessible: after a software update or a change in connected equipment, it is the authoritative source for the exact menu path and supported formats.
