Install the companion app made for your watch or fitness band, confirm that your phone meets that device’s compatibility requirements, charge and turn on both devices, enable Bluetooth, and complete pairing inside the companion app. The app—not the phone’s Bluetooth menu alone—normally finishes account setup, permissions, updates, and feature configuration.
Requirements differ by device family. Apple Watch uses Apple’s setup assistant with an iPhone; Pixel Watch uses the Pixel Watch app with a compatible Android phone; other Wear OS watches use the Wear OS app or a manufacturer-specific app; Samsung watches use Galaxy Wearable, while Galaxy Fit bands use the Galaxy Fit app. Use the instructions for your exact model whenever a manufacturer’s flow differs from this guide.
Check compatibility before you open the box
A watch or band can appear in a phone’s Bluetooth list and still be unable to complete setup. Compatibility determines whether the companion app can install, whether the phone can exchange setup data, and whether features such as notifications, health data, calls, or updates are available. Identify the exact model and edition first, then read its current manufacturer support page.
Match the wearable to the phone operating system
| Wearable family | Phone requirement stated by the platform or manufacturer | Companion app or setup route |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch | iPhone; Apple’s setup flow uses the iPhone and the watch together | Apple’s built-in Watch setup assistant |
| Google Pixel Watch | A compatible Android phone | Pixel Watch app |
| Other Wear OS watches | Phone and model requirements vary; follow the watch maker’s instructions if they supersede Google’s general guidance | Wear OS app, or the maker’s specified companion app |
| Samsung Galaxy Watch | Bluetooth models and Galaxy Watch4 and Watch5 series require a compatible Android phone | Galaxy Wearable |
| Samsung Galaxy Fit | Use the requirements listed for the exact band and phone | Galaxy Fit app |
Do not assume that an app made for one family can set up another. Galaxy Wearable and Galaxy Fit are separate routes, and a generic Wear OS instruction may not cover a manufacturer’s additional steps. If the model is a cellular watch, also check the carrier and regional requirements before expecting mobile service; those conditions are model- and region-specific.

Record the exact model and account you will use
- Keep the model name, generation, and connection type available. Support instructions can differ between Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and cellular editions.
- Know which phone account will be used during setup. Apple, Google, and Samsung flows may request sign-in to the account associated with the device’s services.
- Check that the phone has enough free storage for the companion app and updates, and that you can install apps from its official app store.
- If the wearable was previously owned, ask the previous owner to remove it from their account. A device still linked to another person may require account-specific release steps that a new pairing cannot bypass.
Prepare both devices
Preparation prevents most pairing failures. Put the phone and wearable close together on a stable surface, and avoid beginning the process while either battery is nearly empty.
- Charge the phone and wearable. Connect each to its appropriate charger and wait until both can remain powered for the entire setup and update process.
- Attach the band before powering on when instructed. Google’s Pixel Watch preparation guidance specifically recommends attaching the band before turning on the watch.
- Turn on the phone’s Bluetooth. Leave Bluetooth enabled throughout pairing; do not repeatedly switch it off while the app is exchanging data.
- Allow location access when the platform requests it. Google’s Pixel Watch instructions call out location permissions as part of preparation. The exact permission label and whether it is required can vary by Android version and app.
- Update the phone’s companion app. Install the current Pixel Watch, Wear OS, Galaxy Wearable, Galaxy Fit, or Apple setup component specified for your model.
- Install available wearable firmware updates. Pixel Watch guidance includes current firmware among the preparation checks. Other manufacturers may present the update after the first connection.
- Keep the screen awake when practical. If the phone locks during a long transfer, unlock it and return to the companion app rather than starting a second pairing attempt.
Pair through the correct companion app
The general sequence is the same across families, but the labels and prompts are not interchangeable. Start in the app that the manufacturer names for the exact model, not in the phone’s Bluetooth settings.
General pairing sequence
- Open the manufacturer’s companion app. If it asks for Bluetooth, nearby-device, notification, health, or location access, review the request and grant the permissions needed for the features you intend to use.
- Choose the option to add, set up, or connect a new device. The wording varies by app.
- Wake or power on the wearable. Keep it close to the phone while the app searches.
- Select the correct watch or band when its name appears. If several devices are nearby, compare the displayed name with the model you are holding.
- Confirm the pairing code or matching number shown on both screens when prompted. This prevents connecting to another nearby wearable.
- Wait for the app to report a successful connection. Do not treat the appearance of a Bluetooth entry alone as completion.
- Follow the remaining setup screens for account sign-in, privacy choices, notifications, health permissions, text size, watch face or display preferences, and other device settings.
- Leave the wearable near the phone while app and firmware updates download and install. An update can restart the watch; that does not necessarily mean pairing failed.
Why the phone’s Bluetooth menu is not the whole setup
Bluetooth settings can show a radio connection without registering the wearable with its companion app. The app supplies the device profile, account association, permissions, configuration, and update channel. If you paired only from Bluetooth settings, open the correct companion app and use its add-device flow. If the app cannot find the wearable, remove the incomplete Bluetooth entry only when the manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions recommend doing so, then retry from the app.

Apple’s setup flow pairs an Apple Watch with an iPhone and uses setup assistants on both devices. Place the watch near the iPhone, turn on both devices, and open the Apple Watch setup assistant when it appears. Follow the prompts to identify the watch and confirm pairing.
Choose a new-watch setup or restore path
Apple’s assistant includes an option to set up the watch as new. Choose that when the watch is new to you and you do not need to restore an earlier configuration. If the assistant offers another restore or transfer choice, select it only when it matches your situation; the available choices depend on the phone, account, and watch state.
Complete the settings screens
Continue through the assistant for account and safety prompts, text size, health notifications, and other settings. Keep the iPhone and watch close until the assistant confirms completion. If an update is offered, allow it to finish before judging the connection; interrupting a watch update can leave setup incomplete.

Google Pixel Watch with Android
Pixel Watch requires a compatible Android phone and the Pixel Watch app. Google’s preparation guidance calls for Bluetooth, location permissions, a current app, and current firmware. Charge both devices, attach the band before powering on as directed, and place the watch close to the phone.

- Install or update the Pixel Watch app on the compatible Android phone.
- Enable Bluetooth and allow the location permission requested by the app.
- Power on the watch and keep it beside the phone.
- Open the Pixel Watch app and choose its setup or add-device action.
- Select the watch shown by the app and confirm any matching code.
- Wait for the app to report that the connection succeeded.
- Complete account, notification, health, and other on-screen choices.
- Install the app and firmware updates offered during setup, keeping the devices close and charged.
If the app pauses at discovery, check location permission as well as Bluetooth. A Bluetooth connection without the required app permission can prevent the app from completing discovery.
Other Wear OS watches
Google’s Wear OS help directs users to connect through the Wear OS app, but individual watch makers can add or replace steps. Read the model’s instructions first to determine whether the maker wants the general Wear OS app, its own companion app, or both.
Use the maker’s instructions when they differ
Begin with the app named for your model. If that guide sends you to Wear OS, install the current Wear OS app and follow its add-device flow. If it requires a manufacturer app for health features, watch faces, payments, or updates, install that app as well and complete its prompts after the initial connection.
Confirm the connection in the app
When the watch appears, select it and approve the matching code if shown. Wait for the app’s connected status, then complete account and permission requests. Device-specific troubleshooting links in Google’s Wear OS help and the watch maker’s support pages take precedence over a generic reset sequence.

Complete the Samsung account, notifications, health, and update prompts that apply to your model. If the app offers an additional component for the watch, install it from the official app store and return to Galaxy Wearable to finish setup.
Galaxy Fit
Samsung points Galaxy Fit users to the Galaxy Fit app rather than assuming that Galaxy Wearable is the correct route. Install the Galaxy Fit app, check the exact band’s phone requirements, enable Bluetooth, and use the app’s add-device flow. Keep the band close while it confirms the connection and downloads any available update.

Accounts and privacy choices
Sign in only to the account you intend to keep associated with the device. Review prompts for health data, contacts, notifications, location, and diagnostics. Declining an optional permission may disable a feature without breaking basic time or activity functions; a permission marked as required by the app must be granted for that part of setup to continue.
Notifications and phone access
Choose which phone notifications should reach the wearable. Start with a small set if you want to control interruptions, then add categories later in the companion app. If calls or messages are not offered, check the app’s notification permission and the phone’s system notification access rather than pairing the watch again.
Health and activity features
Health measurements often require separate permissions and profile information. Enter only accurate information requested by the app, and read the app’s explanation of what is stored or synchronized. A band can remain paired even when health permissions are declined, but the related measurements or history may be unavailable.

Updates and restart behavior
Allow the companion app and wearable firmware to reach current versions before troubleshooting advanced features. The wearable may reboot, display a progress bar, or temporarily disappear from the app during an update. Keep it charged and nearby, and do not force a reset unless the manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so.

Troubleshoot a failed or incomplete pairing
Work from the least disruptive checks to the most device-specific remedy. There is no single reset procedure that applies to every watch and band.
The app cannot find the wearable
- Confirm that the phone meets the exact model’s compatibility requirements.
- Check that the wearable and phone have sufficient charge and are powered on.
- Verify that Bluetooth is enabled on the phone.
- Place the wearable immediately beside the phone and remove other nearby devices from the setup area.
- Confirm that the correct companion app is installed and current.
- On Android, review the app’s location and nearby-device permissions, particularly for Pixel Watch setup.
- Close and reopen the companion app, then repeat its add-device action rather than selecting a random Bluetooth entry.
The watch appears in Bluetooth but setup will not finish
This usually indicates that the radio connection exists but the companion app has not completed registration. Return to the app’s add-device screen. If the manufacturer’s instructions call for removing an incomplete Bluetooth pairing, remove that entry from the phone, restart the app, and pair again through the app. Do not delete accounts or reset the wearable unless the model-specific support page tells you to.
Pairing code does not match
Cancel the prompt, make sure you selected the correct wearable, and retry with the phone and watch close together. If another person’s watch or band is nearby, move it away. Repeated mismatches can indicate an old pairing record or a device still linked to a previous owner; follow the manufacturer’s ownership-transfer instructions.
Setup stops during an update
Keep both devices charged and close, and give the update time to complete. Check that the phone remains connected to the internet if the app requires a download. If the app reports an explicit error, record that message and use the manufacturer’s troubleshooting page for the exact model. Avoid interrupting power or performing an unlisted reset.
Notifications or health data are missing after setup
- Open the companion app and confirm that the wearable is shown as connected.
- Review the app’s notification, health, location, and background-operation permissions.
- Check the phone’s system notification settings for the apps you expect to use.
- Install pending app and firmware updates.
- Recheck the model’s feature and phone-compatibility limits; some functions are unavailable on particular phone operating systems or editions.
You changed phones
Use the companion app’s documented transfer, unpair, or new-phone process for the model. Keep the old phone available if the instructions require account removal or a backup. Pairing the watch to a new phone without releasing the old association can trigger an ownership or activation prompt.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact support
Contact the manufacturer when the exact compatibility requirement is met, both devices are charged, Bluetooth and required permissions are enabled, the correct current app is installed, and the wearable remains undiscoverable or cannot complete setup. Provide the exact model, phone model and operating-system version, app name and version if shown, the step where setup stops, and any displayed error. This lets support distinguish an incompatible combination from a pairing record, account, firmware, or hardware problem.
Use the manufacturer’s own troubleshooting page before attempting a factory reset. A reset can erase settings and health history, and the procedure differs across Apple Watch, Pixel Watch, Wear OS watches, Galaxy Watch, and Galaxy Fit. Do not assume that instructions for one family apply to another.
