Set up a new smart TV by completing the on-screen language, region, network, account, and update steps, then review privacy controls one feature at a time. Turn off viewing recognition (often called Automatic Content Recognition or ACR), voice data collection, location access, and personalized-ad settings that you do not need. The exact labels and menu paths vary by brand, model, operating-system version, accepted agreements, and country, so use your television’s current support instructions before changing a brand-specific setting.

What to do before turning on the TV

Have the television’s model number, remote, Wi-Fi password, and account credentials available. The model number is usually printed on the back of the set, on the carton, or in the first-run setup screen. You will need it when a privacy option is described differently on another model.

  • Place the TV where its microphone and camera, if fitted, are not unintentionally aimed at private conversations. A removable camera accessory should remain disconnected until you need it.
  • Connect streaming boxes, game consoles, antennas, and other HDMI devices only after you know which inputs you use. Some viewing-recognition systems can identify content from antenna and HDMI inputs, not just the TV’s built-in apps.
  • Use a trusted, secured home network. A privacy toggle does not make an untrusted network safe.
  • Decide which services you actually intend to use. Signing in to more accounts can enable personalization and additional data sharing, so avoid adding accounts merely to finish setup faster.

How to set up a new smart TV

1. Complete the physical connection

Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions for the stand or wall mount, connect the power cable, and attach an antenna or external devices if needed. Turn on the set and choose your language and region. Region selection can affect available apps, legal notices, voice features, charges, and which privacy choices appear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Connect to your home network

Select your home Wi-Fi network and enter its password, or use Ethernet if the TV supports it and a cable is practical. Ethernet avoids wireless congestion but does not prevent the TV or its apps from sending data over the internet. If the TV cannot connect, check the password, move it within range of the router, restart the router, or try Ethernet before continuing.

3. Choose phone-assisted or manual setup when offered

Google TV supports setup with a phone or manually with the remote. Phone-assisted setup can transfer network and account details, while manual setup gives you a slower but more deliberate review of each screen. Google’s instructions note that supported features, regional terms, and possible charges vary by device, manufacturer, and region. Other platforms use different flows.

4. Sign in only where it helps you

Sign in to the platform account and individual services you plan to use. An account may be needed for app installation, purchases, synchronization, or voice-assistant features, but requirements differ between brands and models. Do not assume that every account prompt is mandatory, and do not assume that skipping an account leaves all personalization disabled. Read each screen’s explanation and choose the least data-sharing option that still provides the feature you want.

5. Read optional agreements before accepting

Setup commonly presents several separate choices rather than one universal privacy switch. Look for wording about:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Viewing information, viewing-information services, or Automatic Content Recognition (ACR)
  • Personalized advertising and an advertising identifier
  • Voice recognition, voice recordings, or remote-microphone use
  • Location access
  • Diagnostics, analytics, personalization, and recommendations

Decline an optional agreement when you do not need its feature. If a screen combines required service terms with optional data uses, look for a “manage,” “customize,” or similarly named control instead of accepting everything by default. You can revisit many choices after setup, but data collected while a feature was active may not be erased when you later turn it off.

6. Install system updates

Install available firmware or operating-system updates before relying on the TV. Updates can fix security defects, change menu names, and add or remove privacy controls. On Google TV, the documented route is Settings > System > About > System update > Check for update. Do not apply that path to another platform without checking its own instructions. Keep the TV connected to power while an update runs and restart it if the on-screen process requests it.

7. Recheck privacy choices after setup

Open the privacy section again after the update and confirm that your choices were saved. A first-run agreement, an operating-system update, or a newly installed app can expose a separate consent screen. Check both the TV and any account website or mobile app associated with the platform.

Privacy settings to review, feature by feature

There is no universal smart-TV privacy menu. Review each data category separately because disabling one feature does not disable the others.

Viewing data and Automatic Content Recognition (ACR)

ACR is technology that can recognize programs, commercials, or other content displayed on the television. Depending on the platform, it may analyze content from built-in apps, an antenna, or HDMI-connected devices. It is different from your streaming service’s own viewing history and different from voice recognition.

Samsung describes its ACR-related “Viewing Information Services” as optional. When enabled, its documentation discusses viewing history, identifiers, and IP address among the information involved. You can change the preference in the TV’s settings, but the exact label and location depend on the model and software.

Roku documents the path Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience for withdrawing consent to its viewing-recognition feature. Roku says the feature can recognize programs and commercials viewed through an antenna and HDMI-connected devices. It also warns that information collected while the feature was enabled may be retained and could still be shared for the purposes described in its notice after you disable it. Therefore, turn it off as early as possible, but do not promise yourself that the switch erases historical records.

LG’s current statement says ACR operation and sharing depend on the market, agreements you accepted, and your choices. LG allows ACR to be disabled in TV settings, while legal opt-out rights vary by jurisdiction. Use your exact model’s support instructions rather than copying a menu path from another LG television.

Voice assistants, microphones, and recordings

Voice controls are separate from ACR. Review the TV’s voice-assistant setting, the microphone switch on the remote, and any account-level voice-recording controls. Samsung says voice-recognition data collection can be disabled in settings, although some voice features may stop working. Roku separately describes control over retention of voice recordings through the user’s Roku account. A microphone mute button may stop audio capture by the remote or set, but it does not automatically change an account’s stored recordings or other telemetry.

If you never use voice search, disable voice recognition and keep a remote microphone muted when the hardware provides that control. If you do use voice commands, choose the shortest retention period or the most restrictive recording option offered, then check the account dashboard periodically.

Advertising ID and personalized advertising

On Google TV, the documented path is Settings > Privacy > Ads. From there you can reset or delete the TV advertising ID. Resetting creates a new identifier for future use; deleting removes that identifier from the TV’s advertising settings. Neither choice is a master “no ads” switch.

Google TV Help states: “You can’t turn off ads, but you can control the use of your advertising ID for personalized ads across installed apps.” Google also explains that apps may continue showing advertisements and may personalize them using other information shared with those apps after the TV ad ID is deleted. Review each app’s own privacy and advertising controls if you want to reduce personalization further.

Location access

Google says Google TV can process information for service functions such as watch activity, approximate location, identifiers, app interactions, installed apps, diagnostics, analytics, and personalization. Its documented location control is Settings > Privacy > Location. With location turned off there, apps that rely on that permission do not receive location through the setting, but Google and third parties may still estimate a general location from the TV’s IP address.

Turn location off unless a feature genuinely needs it, such as local recommendations or regional services. Also inspect permissions inside individual apps; a platform-level switch and an app’s own permission model may cover different data flows.

Diagnostics, analytics, and recommendations

After handling ACR, voice, ads, and location, look for choices named “diagnostics,” “usage data,” “analytics,” “improve products,” “personalized recommendations,” or similar. These controls are not interchangeable. A TV can stop ACR while still sending crash reports, app-interaction data, installed-app information, or account activity needed to operate a service. Disable optional analytics and recommendation personalization if you do not need them, while recognizing that some required service data may remain enabled.

How the major platform controls differ

Platform documentation Control covered Where it is managed Important limitation
Samsung Viewing Information Services/ACR and voice-recognition data TV settings; labels vary by model Disabling voice collection can remove some voice features; ACR availability depends on opting in during setup or enabling it later.
Roku Smart TV Experience (ACR) and voice-recording retention ACR: TV settings; voice retention: Roku account controls ACR may recognize antenna and HDMI content, and previously collected data may be retained after withdrawal.
LG ACR/viewing-information sharing TV settings; exact path varies Operation and sharing depend on market, accepted agreements, and user choices; legal opt-out rights differ by jurisdiction.
Google TV Advertising ID and location Settings > Privacy > Ads; Settings > Privacy > Location Deleting the advertising ID does not stop ads; IP-based general-location estimates may still occur.

This table describes documented categories, not a promise that every model exposes the same switches. A television may use a different operating-system version, present a control only after an agreement is accepted, or move the setting after an update.

What turning off tracking does—and does not—do

  • Turning off ACR: reduces the platform’s use of its content-recognition feature, but does not automatically clear a streaming app’s watch history, account data, diagnostics, or network logs.
  • Turning off voice collection: can stop the specified voice-recognition data collection, but may disable voice search or assistant functions and does not necessarily delete recordings already retained in an account.
  • Deleting an advertising ID: removes or resets one identifier used for ad personalization; ads can continue and apps can use other information they receive.
  • Turning off location: limits location delivered through that platform permission, but IP addresses can still reveal an approximate area.
  • Disabling analytics: may reduce optional diagnostics or usage reporting, while required service, security, billing, or account information can continue to be processed.

These distinctions are why a single “privacy off” setting does not exist. Work through the categories and read the description attached to each control.

A practical privacy-hardening checklist

  1. Record the exact model, operating system, software version, and region selected during setup.
  2. Connect through your secured home Wi-Fi or Ethernet network.
  3. Install the manufacturer’s current system update.
  4. Decline optional viewing-information or ACR agreements unless you want their recommendations or measurement features.
  5. Disable voice recognition and remote-microphone access if you do not use voice commands.
  6. Turn off location access unless a required feature depends on it.
  7. Reset or delete the advertising ID and review advertising choices in installed apps.
  8. Turn off optional diagnostics, analytics, and personalized recommendations.
  9. Review privacy settings in every streaming or app account you add.
  10. Revisit the TV’s privacy screen after major software updates or a factory reset.

Troubleshooting common setup and privacy problems

The TV will not connect to Wi-Fi

Verify the network name and password, restart the router and TV, and test the TV near the router. If possible, connect Ethernet to complete updates. A successful network connection is required for many account and firmware steps, but it does not require accepting every optional privacy agreement.

A privacy option is missing

Check whether the feature is available in your country, whether a related agreement was accepted, and whether the TV has the latest software. Search the manufacturer’s support site using the exact model number and current software version. Some controls exist only in an account dashboard rather than on the TV.

The menu path in an online guide does not match

Do not force a setting based on another model. Manufacturers change labels and locations between operating-system versions and regions. Use the TV’s built-in search, open the privacy section from Settings, and confirm the description before changing a control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ads still appear after deleting the advertising ID

This is expected on Google TV. Deleting the TV advertising ID limits that identifier’s use; it does not remove advertisements from apps. Review each app’s own advertising and privacy settings if you want less personalized advertising.

You disabled ACR but still see recommendations or activity

ACR is only one source of viewing-related information. Streaming services can maintain their own watch history, and the platform can still process account, app, diagnostic, or network data. Check the individual service account and the TV’s other privacy categories.

You want to undo every choice

Open the TV’s privacy and account settings and re-enable only the features you need. If the set was previously owned or configured by someone else, perform the manufacturer’s factory reset, install updates, and repeat setup with your own accounts. A reset may remove local settings but cannot guarantee deletion of data already retained by a platform or app.

When a factory reset is appropriate

Use a factory reset before selling, returning, or giving away the television, and when an old account remains linked or setup is irreparably stuck. The reset removes local accounts and preferences according to the manufacturer’s process, but it is not proof that a platform erased historical data collected while the TV was online. After resetting, remove the TV from associated account dashboards where that option exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to maintain privacy after setup

  • Install updates through the manufacturer-supported process and check privacy controls afterward.
  • Remove apps and accounts you no longer use; fewer installed apps means fewer separate privacy policies and permissions to manage.
  • Review voice recordings and advertising settings in account dashboards, not only on the TV.
  • Keep the TV on a secured home network and avoid entering sensitive credentials while connected to an untrusted network.
  • Before connecting a new HDMI device, remember that an enabled ACR system may recognize its displayed content.

The FTC-hosted connected-TV paper is useful historical context about tracking practices, but it should not be treated as a current, universal statistic for every television model. Current behavior depends on the manufacturer, software, region, agreements, apps, and settings active on your particular set.
