The safest way to set up a new Samsung Galaxy phone is to complete the initial wizard, choose deliberately between Smart Switch and a clean setup, create a strong screen lock, and then review Settings > Security and privacy. Pay particular attention to camera and microphone permissions, software updates, Auto Blocker, transfer protections, and the recovery requirements for optional encryption features.

Samsung’s screens and labels differ by Galaxy model, carrier, country or region, and software version. The steps below describe the common path; if an item is missing, use the Settings search field and look for the named feature.

Before you begin

Have the following ready before turning on the phone:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Your Wi-Fi network name and password. Wi-Fi is preferable to a mobile connection for system updates and a large data transfer.
  • The Google account you plan to use for Play Store apps and Android services.
  • Your Samsung account credentials if you use Samsung services, Galaxy backups, Find My Mobile-related features, or Secure Folder recovery.
  • The old phone, its charging cable, and any adapter required to connect it to the new Galaxy.
  • Enough time to leave both phones connected to power during a transfer or major update.

Do not erase or trade in the old phone until you have checked photos, contacts, messages, authenticator codes, banking apps, and any files that were not included in the transfer.

How do I set up a new Samsung Galaxy phone?

1. Start the setup wizard

  1. Turn on the Galaxy and follow the first-run prompts.
  2. Choose your language and region, then review and accept the displayed terms. The exact consent screens depend on the model and location.
  3. Connect to Wi-Fi. A connection may be required before the phone can check for updates, restore data, or finish account setup.
  4. Sign in to a Google account and, when prompted, a Samsung account. You can add or change accounts later in Settings, but signing in during setup makes app and backup restoration more straightforward.
  5. When the wizard asks about a screen lock, create one rather than postponing it. The lock protects the phone before biometric options are available and whenever the device requires the primary credential.

Samsung’s Galaxy A37 5G setup guide illustrates this sequence, but it is an example rather than a promise that every Galaxy has identical wording or screens.

2. Install updates before customizing heavily

If the wizard offers a software update, install it while the phone is connected to power and Wi-Fi. If no update appears, check later at Settings > Software update (the label can vary). Updating first reduces the chance that a security fix, account change, or transfer component will interrupt the rest of setup.

3. Choose your data path

The wizard normally offers a transfer from another Galaxy or Android phone, a transfer from an iPhone or iPad, or a manual setup. The choice affects which prompts and permissions appear, so do not assume that instructions for one method apply to another.

How do I transfer data to my new Galaxy phone?

Smart Switch transfer

Smart Switch is Samsung’s transfer utility for moving selected content from an old device. The available categories and connection methods depend on the source phone and the Galaxy model.

  1. Open Smart Switch when the setup wizard offers it, or launch it later from the phone’s Samsung apps or Settings search.
  2. On the new Galaxy, choose to receive data. On the old device, choose to send data.
  3. Select the old phone’s platform when asked. For a Galaxy or other Android device, the two phones may connect wirelessly or by cable. For an iPhone or iPad, Smart Switch presents a different import path.
  4. If the wizard displays a QR code, scan it with the old phone and follow the on-screen prompts. Samsung’s guide specifically documents this QR-code flow for supported transfers.
  5. Review the categories and estimated size before starting. Deselect items you do not need, then keep both phones near each other and connected to power until the transfer reports completion.
  6. Open important apps and files on the new phone. Some apps require a fresh sign-in, and some protected data, account tokens, or app-specific backups cannot be copied as ordinary files.

Transfer time varies with the amount of data, connection method, and source device. A completed progress bar does not prove that every app’s internal data or every cloud account has been restored.

Manual setup

Choose manual setup if you want a clean start, the old device is unavailable, or you prefer to reinstall apps selectively. Sign in to your Google and Samsung accounts, install apps from their official stores, and copy personal files separately. This approach takes longer but avoids bringing across unused apps and old settings.

Choice Best for What to expect
Smart Switch Moving an existing phone’s photos, contacts, messages, and selected data Faster initial migration, but prompts, categories, permissions, and unsupported data vary by source and connection method.
Manual setup A clean beginning or a transfer without the old device More control over what is installed, but you must restore accounts, files, and app data yourself.

Check Smart Switch privacy and external-storage settings

If you use a microSD card, USB drive, or another form of external storage during a transfer, open Smart Switch’s settings and review its permissions and privacy notice. Samsung documents protection options for external-storage transfers, including password or account safeguards where supported. These controls are not identical for every transfer route, so inspect the options shown on your phone instead of assuming that a wireless transfer and an external-storage transfer have the same protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set a screen lock before adding sensitive accounts

A screen lock is the foundation of access control. Samsung documents PIN, password, and pattern locks, plus fingerprint and face unlock on supported devices.

Method Practical characteristics Availability or caveat
PIN Quick to enter and suitable for everyday unlocking; choose a non-obvious value. Available on Galaxy phones, though exact options can vary.
Password Allows letters, numbers, and symbols and can provide a longer credential. More resistant to guessing when unique, but slower to enter.
Pattern Convenient gesture-based unlock. People nearby may observe the gesture; use a pattern you do not reuse elsewhere.
Fingerprint or face Convenient additional unlock methods after a primary lock is configured. Only supported sensors and models offer these choices; performance and security characteristics differ by device.

Samsung’s documentation also describes automatic locking and side-button locking controls. As a practical choice, use a short auto-lock interval and enable immediate locking with the side button if that suits how you carry the phone. Those are user settings, not a universal Samsung requirement.

After setting the lock, test it by pressing the side button, waiting for the selected timeout, and restarting the phone. A restart commonly requires the primary PIN, password, or pattern before biometrics can be used again.

What privacy settings should I check on a Samsung phone?

Open Security and privacy

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Security and privacy. On some versions, related controls may be split into separate security, privacy, or biometrics menus.
  3. Read the status indicators and open each available category rather than assuming that a green or completed status covers every setting.

Samsung groups account-security controls, app security, updates, permission management, and other protections in this area. The exact cards and labels vary by model, carrier, region, and software version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Audit camera, microphone, and other permissions

  1. From Settings > Security and privacy, open Permission manager. You can also find it by searching Settings for “Permission manager.”
  2. Review Camera and Microphone first. Open each permission category to see which apps have access.
  3. For an app that does not need continuous access, choose an option such as “Allow only while using the app,” “Ask every time,” or “Don’t allow,” when your software version provides it.
  4. Repeat the review for location, contacts, phone, SMS, files and media, and nearby devices. Consider the app’s actual function before removing access; a navigation app may need location, while a simple calculator usually does not.
  5. Revisit permissions after installing a new app or after an update, because an app’s requested capabilities can change.

Revoking a permission can disable part of an app. If something stops working, return to the same entry, read the explanation, and grant only the narrowest access that solves the problem.

Check account, app-security, and update controls

Within Security and privacy, inspect the available account-security prompts and run Google Play Protect if the phone presents that option. Google Play Protect checks installed apps for potentially harmful behavior; it is one layer of protection, not a substitute for installing apps from trustworthy sources.

Open the software-update area and verify that automatic security updates are enabled when the option is available. Also check Google Play system updates, which may be listed separately from Samsung’s system update. A phone can be current in one channel and waiting in another.

Auto Blocker: keep the default or use Maximum restrictions?

Samsung support says, “For the best protection, we recommend keeping Auto Blocker enabled on your Samsung Galaxy device.” Auto Blocker is intended to prevent certain risky actions, including some app installations and commands delivered through cables or messages, depending on the device and software version.

Find it through Settings > Security and privacy > Auto Blocker, or search Settings for “Auto Blocker.” Review the explanation shown on your phone before changing the switch.

Mode Protection approach Trade-offs to consider
Auto Blocker enabled Samsung’s recommended baseline protection against supported unauthorized or risky actions. Some legitimate installation or connection workflows may require an explicit exception or temporary change.
Maximum restrictions enabled A stricter configuration for people who want to minimize additional installation and connection paths. Can cause compatibility problems with apps, accessories, work profiles, or travel arrangements. Samsung documents that it can block 2G networks, which may affect connectivity where 2G is still used.

Leave the standard setting enabled unless you have a specific reason to change it. Consider Maximum restrictions only after checking the requirements of your employer’s work profile, USB accessories, sideloaded apps, travel SIM arrangements, and local network coverage. If a trusted app or accessory fails afterward, return to Auto Blocker and review the individual restriction rather than assuming the phone is defective.

Optional protection for Samsung Cloud data

Enhanced data protection

On supported phones and accounts, Enhanced data protection can add end-to-end encryption to supported Samsung Cloud backup or synchronization categories. It is not a guarantee that every item in Samsung Cloud receives the same encryption treatment. Samsung lists supported categories and cautions that some large files, including some message attachments, may not be encrypted.

The important trade-off is recovery. During activation, Samsung provides a 28-character recovery code. The FAQ says the code cannot be viewed again after it is generated. Store it in a secure location separate from the phone, and do not rely on a screenshot saved only on that device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If the phone is available, follow the Enhanced data protection prompt and record the recovery code exactly as shown.
  • Store the code in a password manager or another secure, separate place that you can access if the phone is lost.
  • Before enabling the feature, decide whether you can maintain that recovery process. Samsung warns that data may be unrecoverable if both the device and recovery code are lost.

Choose Enhanced data protection for the supported cloud categories only when the additional recovery responsibility is acceptable. Otherwise, use the ordinary backup controls and protect the Samsung account with its available security options.

Secure Folder for separately protected apps and files

Secure Folder creates a separate protected space for apps and files on supported Galaxy devices. It is useful for documents, photos, or an app account that you do not want mixed with the main phone space.

  1. Search Settings for Secure Folder and open the feature if your model supports it.
  2. Choose a lock type distinct from an easily guessed phone credential.
  3. When setup offers Reset with Samsung account, consider enabling it. That option provides a recovery route if you forget the Secure Folder lock.
  4. Add only the apps and files that genuinely need the separate space. An app installed inside Secure Folder is a separate instance and may require its own sign-in.

Without the Samsung-account reset route, forgetting the Secure Folder lock can mean losing access. Samsung’s current guide also says that new Secure Folder backups are no longer supported, although restoration from earlier backups remains possible. Treat Secure Folder as an access-control feature, not as your only copy of important files.

After setup: a practical verification checklist

  • Place a test call, send a message, and connect to Wi-Fi and mobile data.
  • Confirm that contacts, photos, messages, calendar entries, and authenticator apps are present after a transfer.
  • Open the camera, microphone-dependent apps, navigation, Bluetooth accessories, and any work-profile apps you need daily.
  • Check that the chosen lock engages after the selected timeout and when the side button is pressed.
  • Run the available Samsung security update, Google Play system update, and Google Play Protect checks.
  • Review Permission manager again after all essential apps are installed.
  • Verify that Auto Blocker remains at the intended setting and that required accessories or networks still work.
  • Confirm that any Enhanced data protection recovery code or Secure Folder recovery method is stored separately and safely.

When a setup choice causes a problem

The transfer stops or misses data

Keep both phones charged, reduce the amount transferred in one pass, and retry using the connection method Smart Switch offers for your devices. Check the source phone for a required permission prompt. If an individual app still lacks its data, use that app’s own backup and restore process; Smart Switch cannot guarantee migration of every protected account or app database.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An app cannot use the camera, microphone, or location

Open Settings > Security and privacy > Permission manager, select the relevant permission, and inspect the app’s setting. Grant only the access needed for the feature, then force-close and reopen the app.

A cable, accessory, or network no longer works

Check whether Maximum restrictions is enabled in Auto Blocker. Its stricter controls can affect accessories, work profiles, and 2G connectivity. Return to the standard Auto Blocker setting if the lost compatibility outweighs the extra restriction.

You forgot a Secure Folder lock or lost an encryption recovery code

Use the Samsung-account reset route only if it was enabled during Secure Folder setup. For Enhanced data protection, look for the separately stored 28-character recovery code; Samsung says it cannot be displayed again after generation. If both the protected device and the recovery code are unavailable, the encrypted data may not be recoverable.

Once these checks are complete, the Galaxy is ready for normal use: the old phone can remain untouched until your final data review, permissions are based on actual need, and optional protections have been enabled with their recovery consequences understood.
