The safest setup sequence is: finish the phone’s Android transfer flow or open OnePlus Clone Phone, copy only the categories you need, keep the old phone available, then choose everyday default apps and audit permissions. A transfer is not a guaranteed clone—biometric credentials, transit cards, incompatible apps, and some app sign-ins may need to be restored manually. Menu names vary by model, country, carrier, and OxygenOS build, so use your phone’s Settings search and the manual for the exact model when a path differs.
Before you start: make the move reversible
Do not erase or trade in the old phone as soon as the progress bar reaches 100 percent. Keep it charged, unlocked, connected to Wi-Fi when possible, and close enough to verify accounts and messages on the new OnePlus. Have the old device’s screen lock and the Google account used for any backup ready. If you use an iPhone as the source, keep its passcode and Apple account credentials available for apps and services that require a fresh sign-in.
- Charge both phones. A wireless migration can take long enough to drain a battery, and a cable transfer stops if either device powers off.
- Update before migrating when practical. Install pending system updates on the new phone first if the setup flow offers them. OxygenOS features and rollout timing differ by device, region, and carrier.
- Back up irreplaceable data. Make a current backup of photos, documents, authenticator recovery codes, password-manager data, and any app that has its own export function. A transfer tool can copy categories without carrying over every app’s private database or login secret.
- Prepare a data-capable cable only for wired migration. OnePlus documents cable transfer but does not establish a universal connector combination or guarantee that a cable is included with a particular model. Check both ports and the cable specification; a charge-only cable will not carry data.
- List accounts that need reauthentication. Banking, work, messaging, authenticator, password-manager, and two-factor apps commonly apply their own security checks on a new device.
Write down anything that must work before you leave home: emergency contacts, transit or payment cards, work VPN, password manager, two-factor codes, and your primary messaging service. This list becomes your acceptance test after the copy finishes.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose a transfer route
There is no single “clone everything” operation. OnePlus documents three transfer routes, and the Android setup wizard can also copy from another Android phone or restore an available backup. Choose based on the source phone, the connection you can maintain, and whether you want to restore from Google rather than copy directly.

| Route | Source phones | Connection | Typical categories offered | Backup involved | Important condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Android setup transfer | Android | Wireless setup flow or a cable when the wizard offers it | Device-dependent; commonly contacts, messages, photos, files, apps and settings selected by the wizard | Can restore an available Google backup | Old phone should be charged, unlocked and nearby; some apps and app data do not copy |
| OnePlus Clone Phone, Android-to-Android | Android | Phone-to-phone Wi-Fi after QR pairing | Contacts, call history, messages, photos, audio, videos, notes, apps, downloads and documents are among the categories OnePlus lists | Direct migration; make your own backup first | Review selections carefully because some data can merge while other data can overwrite destination data |
| OnePlus Clone Phone, iOS-to-Android | iPhone | Wireless pairing described by OnePlus | Categories offered by the app; availability differs from Android-to-Android | Not a substitute for an iCloud or app-specific backup | Some Apple-only data and app credentials require manual setup |
| OnePlus cable transfer | Android or iPhone, where the setup path supports the source | Data-capable cable | Categories shown by the transfer flow, including the categories OnePlus lists for its transfer process | Not required for direct copy | Verify port compatibility and data support; no universal cable type is established for every model |
Use the on-screen Android setup flow first if the phone is still at initial setup. If you already completed setup, open Clone Phone and follow its pairing instructions. The exact app label and available categories can change with the installed OxygenOS release.
Transfer data during Android setup
This is the most direct path when the OnePlus is new or has been reset. The wizard’s wording varies, but the decisions are consistent: identify the source, establish a connection, select data, and verify the result.
- Start the new OnePlus and join Wi-Fi. Continue through language, region and network screens until Android offers to copy apps and data or restore a backup.
- Choose the source type. Select another Android phone for a direct copy, or choose the option to restore from an available backup if the old phone is unavailable.
- Unlock and confirm the old phone. Follow the prompts to approve the connection. Keep both screens awake until pairing completes.
- Select the categories. Read the itemized list rather than accepting every checkbox automatically. Include contacts, call history, messages, photos, audio, videos, notes, downloads and documents only when you actually want them on the new phone.
- Review the app list. Android warns that some apps and app data do not copy. Deselect apps you no longer trust or use, and expect to reinstall incompatible apps from Google Play.
- Start the copy and leave both phones alone. Do not switch networks, restart either phone or close the transfer screen. Large photo and video libraries can make this the longest step.
- Complete account sign-in and updates. Restore prompts may ask for the Google account associated with the backup. After reaching the home screen, let Play Store updates finish before judging whether an app is missing.
A Google backup is useful when a direct phone-to-phone link is impractical, but it is not a complete disk image. A backup can restore supported settings and app records while leaving certain apps, private databases and credentials behind.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse OnePlus Clone Phone
OnePlus describes Clone Phone as a QR-paired migration tool: the new phone creates or displays a pairing code, the old phone scans or joins it, and you select what to copy. OnePlus’s support tagline summarizes its purpose: “Switch to your new OnePlus phone quickly using the Clone Phone App.” Treat the app as a selective transfer utility, not proof that every account and hardware-bound item has moved.
Android-to-Android procedure
- Open Clone Phone on the new OnePlus and choose the option identifying it as the new phone.
- Open Clone Phone on the old Android device, choose the old-phone role, and scan the QR code shown on the OnePlus when prompted.
- Approve the temporary connection and wait for the content-selection screen.
- Expand categories and inspect the individual selections. OnePlus lists contacts, call history, messages, photos, audio, videos, notes, apps, downloads and documents among transferable content.
- Remove anything you do not want merged into the new phone. Pay particular attention to duplicate contacts, old downloads and large videos.
- Start the migration, keep both phones nearby and unlocked, and wait for the completion message.
- Open the most important apps and files on the new device before deleting anything from the old one.
iPhone-to-Android procedure
- Choose the iPhone source option in Clone Phone on the OnePlus and follow the displayed pairing instructions.
- Approve the connection on the iPhone when asked. Keep the iPhone unlocked and connected during the selection and copy stages.
- Review the categories the app makes available. Do not assume that every iOS app, Apple-only service, or app database has an Android equivalent.
- Run the transfer, then install Android versions of essential apps from Google Play and sign in manually where required.
Clone Phone can merge some information with existing destination data and overwrite other information. Read warnings on each selection screen. If the new phone already contains contacts or messages, export or back them up before starting so an unwanted overwrite is recoverable.
What will not transfer reliably?
“Transfer everything” is a useful goal, but the tools do not promise a perfect clone. OnePlus’s community guidance identifies several limits, and Android separately warns that some apps and app data do not copy.

- Biometric credentials: fingerprints and face-unlock enrollment are security-bound to the device. Plan to enroll them again in the new phone’s security settings.
- Hardware-bound items: transit cards and similar secure elements may stay tied to the original hardware.
- Incompatible apps or data: an app built for a different Android version, processor, screen configuration or licensing model may be omitted or require a fresh installation.
- App sign-in secrets: a copied app does not guarantee that its password, session token, passkey or two-factor enrollment will work on the new device. Reauthenticate through the service’s supported process.
- Apple-only services and formats: an iPhone-to-Android migration can copy available categories without recreating every Apple service or app state.
- Data excluded by your selections: anything unchecked in the transfer screen remains on the old phone or in the backup, not on the OnePlus.
After the transfer, compare the new phone with your pre-move checklist. Open recent conversations, search contacts, play representative photos and videos, inspect Downloads and Documents, and test calls and text messages. Keep the old phone until those checks pass and you have recovered any missing account data.

Check for duplicates, overwrites and missing files
Contacts and calendars
Open the Contacts app and search for several people by name and number. If duplicates appear, use the app’s merge tool only after confirming which account is authoritative. Verify that the correct Google or work account is syncing; a local contact copy and a cloud copy can otherwise look like separate entries.
Messages and call history
Open recent message threads and confirm that the default SMS application is receiving new messages. Place a test call, check the call-history dates you need, and verify that spam blocking or carrier messaging features are enabled in the new app.
Photos, videos and documents
Browse folders rather than relying solely on a gallery count. Check Camera, Screenshots, Downloads and any work-document folder. Open a few older files and a few large videos; a thumbnail can exist even when the original file is incomplete or still downloading from cloud storage.
Apps and accounts
Wait for Google Play to finish updating. Then launch financial, work, messaging, authenticator and password-manager apps one at a time. Follow each service’s recovery or sign-in instructions instead of copying secret files from the old phone.

Because OnePlus menu labels differ across models, regions and OxygenOS versions, do not rely on one universal tap path. In Settings, search for default apps or default application, open the matching result, and use the category list shown on your phone. If search returns nothing, consult the manual for the exact model and installed build.
Make these decisions first
| Category | Question to answer | What to test afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Browser | Which browser should open web links? | Tap a link in an email or message and confirm the expected browser opens. |
| SMS or messaging | Which app should receive and send text messages? | Send a test text and verify incoming messages appear in the chosen app. |
| Phone or dialer | Which app should handle calls and contacts from call links? | Place a call from a contact and from a web page. |
| Home app or launcher | Do you want the OnePlus launcher or an installed alternative? | Press Home, open the app drawer and test widgets and gestures. |
| Assistant | Which assistant should answer supported voice or button actions? | Invoke it with the method your phone provides and review microphone permissions. |
| Wallet or payment app | Which supported wallet should handle tap-to-pay requests? | Confirm the service, card provisioning and screen-lock requirements before relying on it. |
Changing a default does not grant the app unrestricted access. Permissions remain separate controls, and an app can still ask for access the first time a feature is used.
Review privacy and security settings
Complete this audit after migration, not only during the first-run wizard. Transferred apps may request permissions again, and a new installation can expose notification content or location in ways that were configured differently on the old phone.
1. Audit sensitive app permissions
Open the permission controls from Settings. On OxygenOS 14, OnePlus documents the path as Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager. Treat that path as a version-specific example: OxygenOS 15, OxygenOS 16 and regional builds may place the control elsewhere. If the labels differ, search Settings for Permission manager or app permissions.
Review each sensitive category and decide whether the app’s function needs it:
- Location: navigation and delivery apps may need it while in use; a simple game or reader usually does not need continuous background location.
- Camera: allow it for scanning, video calls or photography; deny it for apps with no camera feature.
- Microphone: allow it for calls or voice recording; check whether an app needs access only while active.
- Contacts: grant it when an app genuinely matches people or sends invitations; avoid broad access for unrelated utilities.
- Photos and videos: choose the narrowest library access offered when an app needs to upload or edit media.
- Notifications: decide whether the app may interrupt you and whether sensitive text can appear on the lock screen.
Android describes permission choices as user-controlled. Use that control to match access to the feature you are using, then revisit permissions after major app updates.

2. Restrict unnecessary background location
For every app with location access, check whether “always” or background access is necessary. A mapping app used only for occasional navigation can often work while in use. Removing background access may reduce passive tracking while preserving the feature you need.
3. Rebuild the screen lock and biometrics
Set a strong PIN or password before enrolling fingerprints or face unlock. Biometric enrollment normally must be repeated because biometric credentials are tied to the device and may not migrate. Confirm that the lock method satisfies banking, wallet and work-policy requirements.
4. Control lock-screen notifications
Review whether full message text, one-time codes or email subjects appear while the phone is locked. The exact notification and privacy labels vary, so use Settings search for lock screen notifications or sensitive notifications. Choose a setting that lets you see useful alerts without exposing private content to someone who can see the display.
5. Check backup, sync and device finding
Confirm which Google or work accounts sync contacts, calendars, photos and files. Verify that backups are enabled for the account you intend to use, and review what is included. Open the device-finding control—often associated with Find My Device or an equivalent service—and confirm it is enabled if you want to locate, lock or erase the phone remotely. Availability and labels depend on the installed software and account configuration.
6. Re-authenticate high-risk apps
Open banking, authenticator, work, password-manager and primary messaging apps. Complete their official sign-in or device-approval steps. Do not assume that a transferred app contains usable credentials, passkeys or two-factor registrations. Keep recovery codes and the old phone accessible until each service confirms the new device.

OnePlus’s OxygenOS 16 information page lists supported devices and notes that rollout timing varies by device model, country and carrier. That means a phone purchased today is not guaranteed to run OxygenOS 16 out of the box, and two OnePlus phones with the same marketing name can display different labels after regional updates. The OxygenOS 14 Permission manager path above is therefore an example, not a universal promise.

When a menu is missing, use this order:
- Search Settings using the feature name, such as “default apps,” “Permission manager,” “lock screen notifications” or “Find My Device.”
- Check the phone’s About device screen for the exact OxygenOS and Android versions.
- Open the model-specific manual and follow its terminology.
- Install pending system updates, then search again; feature placement can change after an update.
Avoid following a path copied from a different OnePlus model without checking the headings on your own screen.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The phones will not pair
- Unlock both screens and keep them close together.
- Turn off battery-saver restrictions temporarily if they suspend the transfer app.
- Confirm both devices are on the intended Wi-Fi network when the flow requests Wi-Fi.
- Restart the pairing step rather than repeatedly approving an expired QR code.
- If wireless pairing remains unreliable, return to the Android setup flow or use a verified data-capable cable supported by both ports.
The transfer stops partway through
- Charge both devices and prevent them from sleeping during the copy.
- Free storage on the new phone; large videos and downloads can exceed available space.
- Retry with large, nonessential categories deselected, then copy those files separately.
- Do not erase the old phone until you can open the copied files and accounts.
An app is missing or starts as a blank installation
Check Google Play’s library and the app developer’s Android compatibility. Android explicitly warns that some apps and app data do not copy. Reinstall from the official store, then use the service’s sign-in or restore process. If the app stored data only locally, look for its export or backup feature on the old phone.
Contacts or messages are duplicated
Identify which account is syncing each item before deleting anything. A direct copy can coexist with cloud-restored records. Use the Contacts or messaging app’s merge, archive or account-filter controls only after confirming that the remaining copy is backed up.

A cable is connected but nothing happens
A cable can charge without carrying data. Verify that the cable is rated for data, that both connectors match the phones’ ports, and that the transfer wizard—not just the charging notification—is active. OnePlus does not specify one connector arrangement for every model, so model and cable specifications must be checked together.
A banking or authenticator app rejects the new phone
Use the service’s device-change, recovery or re-enrollment procedure. Keep the old phone and recovery codes available, because copying the app package does not transfer its security enrollment automatically.
Final acceptance checklist
- Contacts, recent messages and required call history are present.
- Representative photos, videos, downloads and documents open correctly.
- Calls and SMS work through the selected phone and messaging defaults.
- Browser, launcher, assistant and wallet choices match your preferences.
- Banking, work, authenticator, messaging and password-manager apps have been tested and reauthenticated.
- Fingerprints or face unlock have been enrolled again if wanted.
- Location, camera, microphone, contacts, photos and notification permissions have been reviewed.
- Lock-screen notification visibility matches your privacy needs.
- Backup, account sync and device-finding controls are enabled as intended.
- The old phone remains intact until every critical item passes this checklist.
Once those checks pass, remove accounts from the old device only when you are ready to retire it, and perform a separate secure-wipe process appropriate to that phone before selling or recycling it.
