The safest first-day setup is to identify your exact OnePlus model, sales region, and OxygenOS version, install any available system update, then review permissions, special app access, device-finding protection, and battery behavior. Do not assume that a menu or feature shown in one OnePlus manual exists on every model: OxygenOS labels and rollout timing vary by device, country, and carrier.
Use the sequence below as a checklist, confirming each label on your phone before changing it. The goal is selective control: remove access and background activity that you do not need while preserving the notifications, syncing, and security functions you rely on.
1. Identify the phone before changing settings
Write down three details before following any version-specific instructions:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Exact model: the commercial name is not always enough. Record the model designation shown in the phone’s device information.
- Region and carrier: the same model family can receive different software packages or carrier-controlled features in different countries.
- OxygenOS version: menu names and privacy controls can change between major releases.
Open Settings and the device-information screen, then record those details somewhere you can consult later. If a step below does not match, search Settings for the key term rather than repeatedly tapping an absent menu. The examples in this guide come from OxygenOS 14 and the OnePlus Open manual; they are reference paths, not universal paths for every OnePlus phone.

Install updates before learning the menus
Use the system-update screen in Settings and install every update offered for your model. Restart if the updater requests it, and check once more after the restart because a staged update may appear only after the first package is installed.
OnePlus says OxygenOS releases can be delivered in batches and that availability depends on the device, country, and carrier. A carrier-exclusive schedule is controlled by the carrier, so an update shown on another person’s phone is not proof that your phone should already have it. Finish the update check before copying a menu path from a guide; the update can change the labels you are about to use.
2. Build a permission baseline, app by app
Permissions are the most direct privacy control on a new phone. Instead of accepting every request during setup, inspect each installed app and ask what function actually requires the access.
Open Permission manager
In the OxygenOS 14 manual, the documented route is Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager. Your phone may use slightly different capitalization or place Security and Privacy in a different section.
Open each sensitive category and review the apps listed there. For every app, choose the least access that still supports the task you want to perform. An app that needs a permission only during a particular action should not automatically receive continuous access.
| Permission | Questions to ask | Practical first-day choice |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Does the app provide navigation, local search, weather, delivery tracking, or another location-dependent function? | Keep access only for apps whose core function needs it. Remove it from apps that have no location-related purpose. |
| Camera | Does the app scan, photograph, make video calls, or attach images? | Allow it for those uses; otherwise deny it until the app has a clear need. |
| Microphone | Does the app record audio, handle calls, or accept voice input? | Leave it off for apps that do not provide an audio feature you use. |
| Contacts | Does the app need to display your address book or start calls and messages from it? | Allow only when contact integration is part of the job. A social or utility app may work without the full address book. |
| Notifications | Will alerts from this app be useful or merely add interruption and lock-screen exposure? | Keep alerts for time-sensitive services and disable noisy, nonessential notifications. |
| Photos and videos | Does the app need your whole library, or only a file you deliberately select? | Prefer a picker or one-time selection when the option is offered. |
Do not treat “deny” as a permanent decision. If a feature stops working, return to Permission manager, grant the narrowest available option, perform the task, and remove access again if the app does not need it afterward.

Use limited photo access when the app supports it
The OxygenOS 14 manual describes setting an app’s Photos and videos permission to Ask every time. When the app requests a picture, you can then select individual items instead of exposing the entire library.
This choice is conditional. The option depends on the app targeting Android 13 or later and supporting the relevant system permission behavior. If you do not see Ask every time, the absence does not mean you missed a hidden switch; that app may not support the control. Use the narrowest alternative the phone presents, and remember that a photo-editing or backup workflow may legitimately need broader access while it runs.
3. Audit special app access separately
Normal permissions do not cover every powerful capability. In the OxygenOS 14 documentation, the separate route is Settings > Apps > Special app access.
Review the list rather than assuming that an app appearing there is malicious. These controls exist for functions that can affect other apps or the system, including:
- Reading notifications
- Managing files
- Displaying over other apps
For each entry, identify the feature that uses the access and whether you still use it. An overlay may be needed for a particular tool but can also cover buttons in other apps. Notification access can enable a companion device or automation service but exposes incoming alert content to that service. File-management access can be necessary for a file utility while being excessive for an unrelated app.

4. Make the phone findable before it is lost
Set up device finding while you still have the phone in your hand. In the OxygenOS 14 manual, the path is Settings > Security and privacy > Device finders > Find My Device. Complete the Google account verification requested by the setup flow.
Verification matters because the finding service needs to associate the handset with the correct account. If you skip it, discovering the setting later does not help with a phone that has already disappeared. Confirm that the account shown is the one you can access from another device and that you know its sign-in method.
Prevent an easy shutdown of a lost phone
Under More security & privacy, look for Require password to power off. OnePlus describes this as a way to help prevent someone from shutting down a lost phone before it can be located. The label and availability can vary with model and OxygenOS version, so treat it as an optional protection rather than a guaranteed feature on every device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThis setting adds friction when you intentionally power off or restart the phone. Decide whether that trade-off fits your routine, then test the behavior once at home so you know what the phone will ask for during an emergency.
5. Measure battery use before restricting anything
A new phone may spend its first hours restoring accounts, indexing files, downloading updates, and synchronizing data. Those activities can make early battery readings look unusual. Let setup work finish, then inspect the phone’s battery-use details before imposing broad restrictions.
The OnePlus Open manual documents a battery-usage view that identifies which apps and processes consume power. Open the battery section in Settings and use the usage detail to distinguish a single background-heavy app from normal system activity. The exact screen name can differ on another model.

Classify what you see
- Expected setup work: account restoration, app installation, photo indexing, and a recent system update can temporarily appear near the top.
- Useful background work: messaging, calendar, navigation, security, and backup services may need background activity to deliver timely results.
- Suspicious or unnecessary drain: an app you rarely use that remains active for long periods deserves an in-app review, a permission reduction, or removal.
Check the app’s own settings first. A sync interval, video autoplay, location polling, or repeated refresh may be the real cause. System-level battery optimization is useful when the measured behavior justifies it, not as a blanket setting applied to every app.
The Tool Desk

Restricting background activity can reduce power use, but it can also delay notifications, pause uploads, interrupt navigation, or make a connected accessory appear offline. Keep timely alerts and background work available for apps where delay would matter. Apply stronger restrictions to apps whose alerts are unimportant, and verify the result by sending yourself a test notification or waiting for the normal sync event.
6. Choose a charging and saver strategy
Battery controls are choices with trade-offs, not guaranteed battery-life improvements. The OnePlus Open manual describes three relevant options: optimized charging, Battery saver, and high-performance mode. Their presence and behavior should be confirmed on the exact model and software version you own.
| Setting | What the documented behavior does | Benefit | Cost or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Optimized charging | Learns your usage habits and can delay charging beyond 80% until shortly before expected use. | Reduces the time the phone spends at a very high charge level during a predictable routine. | Charging may appear to pause around 80%, and the behavior depends on the phone learning a usable pattern. It is not a promise of a particular lifespan or runtime. |
| Battery saver | Restricts some features and apps to reduce consumption. | Extends remaining charge when you need the phone to last longer. | Background work, visual behavior, or notifications may be limited. Check important apps after enabling it. |
| High-performance mode | Prioritizes performance and increases power consumption. | Can suit demanding workloads when maximum responsiveness matters. | It uses more energy, so it is the opposite of a battery-saving setting. |
When optimized charging fits
Enable optimized charging if your phone follows a reasonably predictable charging and waking pattern and you accept that it may remain near 80% for part of the night or day. If you regularly need a full battery at unpredictable times, the delayed final portion may be inconvenient. The setting can be disabled when you need an immediate full charge.
When to use Battery saver
Use Battery saver as a deliberate low-charge or travel mode rather than leaving it on without checking its effects. Before relying on it, test a message, a calendar reminder, and any other alert that must arrive promptly. If one is delayed, exempt that workflow or turn the saver off for the task.
Keep high-performance mode for a specific purpose
High-performance mode is appropriate only when the extra responsiveness is worth the additional consumption. Turn it off after the demanding task. Do not describe it as a battery optimization simply because it appears alongside other battery controls.

7. A first-day setup order that minimizes rework
- Record model, region, and OxygenOS version. Keep the details available when checking whether a menu or feature applies to your phone.
- Install offered system updates. Use the system-update screen, restart when requested, and check again after the restart.
- Review Permission manager. Work through location, camera, microphone, contacts, notifications, and photos and videos. Remove access that has no clear purpose.
- Set photo access deliberately. Choose Ask every time where the app supports it and Android compatibility allows it.
- Inspect Special app access. Review notification reading, file management, overlays, and any other powerful capability shown on the device.
- Enable Find My Device. Follow the documented device-finder path or search Settings for the term, complete Google account verification, and confirm the account.
- Consider the power-off password. Find Require password to power off under More security & privacy if your model offers it, then test the behavior.
- Let initial synchronization settle. After the phone finishes restoring and updating, inspect battery usage rather than reacting to the first hour’s drain.
- Apply targeted battery controls. Optimize apps with demonstrated background drain, preserve apps that need timely background work, and select optimized charging, Battery saver, or high-performance mode according to the trade-off you actually need.
8. Troubleshoot mismatched menus and unexpected behavior
The update is not offered
Confirm that the phone is connected reliably, check the system-update screen again later, and compare the result only with information for the same model, region, and carrier. OnePlus documents staged rollouts, so an absent update is not by itself evidence of a failed setup.
A privacy option is missing
Check the OxygenOS version and the app’s Android compatibility. Photo selection controls, in particular, depend on the app targeting Android 13 or later and supporting the option. For other controls, use Settings search and the current on-device wording instead of forcing the OxygenOS 14 path.
Notifications stop arriving after a battery change
Return to battery usage and the affected app’s optimization controls. Remove an overly aggressive restriction, then send a test notification while the phone is idle. If the alert returns, keep the app out of the restrictive group and use Battery saver only when you accept that background behavior may change.
Battery drain remains high
Recheck usage details after setup downloads and indexing have finished. Look for one app or process that remains active, then reduce its unnecessary permissions, adjust its own refresh settings, or uninstall it. Avoid restricting every app at once, because that hides the cause and can create missed alerts.
Find My Device cannot be completed
Verify that the intended Google account is available on the phone and complete the account verification step in the device-finder flow. If the menu is absent, confirm the OxygenOS version and search Settings for “Find My Device” or “Device finders.” Feature placement can differ by model and software.
9. What to expect from model and regional differences
There is no single OnePlus setup screen that applies unchanged to every handset. The OxygenOS 14 manual supplies the clearest documented paths for Permission manager, Special app access, and Find My Device, while the OnePlus Open manual supplies the cited battery-usage and charging examples. Those references establish how the controls work in those documented environments, not a guarantee that another model exposes identical switches.
OxygenOS rollout timing and feature availability can differ by device, country, and carrier. Keep your exact model and region attached to every support lookup, and treat a menu label as an example until you verify it on the phone in your hand. That approach prevents two common mistakes: changing a setting that does not exist on your software, and assuming a battery or privacy feature is universal when it is limited to a particular model or release.
