First, find out whether your MacBook Pro is personally owned or managed by your employer or school. If the organization supplied it, follow its setup instructions before starting: management enrollment can happen during Setup Assistant, and IT may control or skip some setup screens. For a personally owned Mac, you can transfer files during initial setup or later with Migration Assistant.
Before you turn on an organization-issued Mac
Check the instructions from your employer or school before you begin Setup Assistant. A Mac assigned through Apple School Manager or Apple Business may enroll in a mobile device management (MDM) service as part of setup. Management can configure devices, distribute apps and automate enrollment. The organization decides which workflow and settings apply.
Some Setup Assistant screens can be controlled or skipped by device management, and the available controls differ by management service. Follow the steps your IT team provides rather than trying to bypass enrollment or erase a managed Mac. Instructions may include an organization account, Wi-Fi details, enrollment steps or required apps. Apple’s Setup Assistant deployment guide describes these management controls.

Decide when and what to migrate
You can transfer data while setting up the MacBook Pro, or finish setup first and use Migration Assistant later. Starting with a clean setup does not prevent a later transfer. Apple’s MacBook Pro guide to migrating data covers both routes.

Migration Assistant can transfer from another Mac, a Time Machine backup, a startup disk or storage device, and a Windows PC. If you are transferring between Macs, Apple supports wireless migration and says a direct Thunderbolt or Ethernet connection is often faster. A cable is optional; check both Macs’ ports and cable compatibility before choosing a direct connection. For wireless Mac-to-Mac migration, keep both computers updated and connected to the same network.
Pick the source that matches your old computer
- Another Mac: Use it directly as the transfer source, by wireless connection or a compatible Thunderbolt or Ethernet connection.
- Time Machine or a startup disk: Select the backup or disk as the source when Migration Assistant prompts you.
- Windows PC: Migration Assistant supports a transfer from a Windows computer; follow Apple’s MacBook Pro migration instructions for the workflow.
Transfer duration depends on the amount of data and connection. Apple’s documentation does not establish a universal time, so allow enough time without assuming a particular speed.

Set up accounts on a personal or managed Mac
On a personally owned Mac, use the account setup that fits your needs and any work or school policies. If the device belongs to an organization, use the account and enrollment instructions supplied by IT rather than assuming a personal setup flow will be available.
Apple’s account-driven enrollment documentation for Apple School Manager says a Managed Apple Account and a personal Apple Account can coexist on the same device, with work and personal data separated and personal information kept private from IT. This description is specific to account-driven enrollment; it should not be treated as a guarantee about every school, employer, management service or configuration. Finish setup without conflicting with organization policy
If the Mac is managed, complete enrollment as directed and let the organization’s configuration determine which settings and apps are required. Setup Assistant screens and available choices can differ according to macOS version, device ownership and management service. If a screen or prompt does not match your instructions, ask IT before changing course.
For a personally owned Mac, choose whether to migrate now or later, then complete the setup options presented on the Mac. The available screens vary by macOS version; Apple’s migration guide establishes the transfer choices described above, not one universal checklist for every setup screen.
