The safest way to move to a new MacBook is to use Apple’s Setup Assistant while the Mac is starting for the first time. It can transfer documents, applications, user accounts and settings from another Mac, a Time Machine backup, another startup disk or storage device, or a Windows PC. If you have already finished setup, use Migration Assistant in System Settings instead. Keep both computers powered, choose the source that contains your data, and verify important files and applications after the transfer.
Choose the transfer route before you turn on the new MacBook
Your old computer and the way you can connect it determine the best method. Decide this first so you do not erase, reorganize or disconnect anything while Setup Assistant is waiting for a source.
| Source or route | Best when | What to prepare | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mac-to-Mac over Wi‑Fi | You want to avoid buying or finding a cable | Wi‑Fi enabled on both Macs; place them close together; connect both to power | Apple says a direct Thunderbolt or Ethernet connection is often faster, but no universal transfer time is promised |
| Direct Thunderbolt or Ethernet | You have compatible ports and a suitable cable and want a potentially faster wired transfer | Check the exact ports on both Macs and use a cable that works with both | Port and cable compatibility varies by Mac; a Thunderbolt cable is optional, not required |
| Time Machine backup | The old Mac is unavailable, unreliable or already backed up | A readable Time Machine backup drive | The backup can restore files, applications and the user account, but you still need to review the result |
| Windows Migration Assistant | Your old computer is a Windows PC | Current Windows and macOS updates, the matching Windows Migration Assistant installer, and both computers available during the transfer | Windows network settings and passwords do not transfer |
Setup Assistant is available only during the first-run setup flow. Once you have completed that flow, the equivalent tool is Migration Assistant on the new Mac. Both routes let you choose what information to move; neither requires replacing macOS on the new computer.

Prepare both computers and the source data
Confirm which source contains the files
- Use the old Mac itself if it starts normally and contains the latest versions of your files.
- Use a Time Machine backup if you cannot use the old Mac directly or want a backup-based route.
- Use the Windows procedure if the source computer runs Windows, even if you intend to move only documents.
Update and power the computers
For a Mac-to-Mac transfer, Apple’s guidance recommends updating macOS on both computers. The Macs do not have to run the same macOS version. Plug both laptops into power so they do not sleep or shut down partway through the process. For a wireless transfer, turn on Wi‑Fi and keep the Macs near one another.

For a Windows transfer, install available Windows and macOS updates before starting. Quit open applications on the Windows PC. Download the Migration Assistant release that Apple lists for the destination Mac’s macOS; do not choose a version merely because it is the newest file you happen to find.
Check cables and ports before choosing a wired route
Apple identifies a direct Thunderbolt or Ethernet connection as often faster than wireless. That is a relative advantage, not a guaranteed speed or completion time. Inspect the ports on both specific Macs and confirm that the cable supports the connection you intend to use. If you cannot verify compatibility, wireless or a Time Machine backup avoids the risk of an unsuitable cable.
Protect the source before migration
Migration copies selected information; it does not delete the old Mac’s information. Even so, keep the old computer untouched until you have opened the most important files on the new Mac. If you already maintain a Time Machine backup, make sure it is available before beginning. An external drive is useful for creating such a backup, but Apple’s guidance does not require a particular capacity or drive model.
Transfer during the new MacBook’s first setup
Use this procedure when the new MacBook is still showing Setup Assistant screens and has not yet been configured as a normal user computer.
- Turn on the new MacBook and proceed through Setup Assistant until it asks whether you want to transfer information.
- Choose the source that matches your situation: another Mac, a Time Machine backup, a startup disk or other storage device, or a Windows PC.
- Prepare the source computer when Setup Assistant instructs you to do so. For another Mac, open Migration Assistant and select the option to transfer information to another Mac.
- Wait for the computers to identify one another. If a security code appears, compare the code shown on both screens and confirm that it matches before continuing.
- Select the categories and user information you want to move. Depending on the source, these can include documents, applications, user accounts and settings.
- Review the selection and start the transfer. Keep the computers powered and connected until Setup Assistant reports that the process is complete.
- Finish the remaining setup screens on the new MacBook, then sign in and inspect the transferred data before changing or discarding anything on the old computer.
Do not treat a progress bar as a reliable clock. Apple does not provide a universal migration duration, and the time depends on the amount and type of data and the connection. A direct Thunderbolt or Ethernet connection is often faster than wireless, but Apple does not guarantee a particular rate.
Move files from one Mac to another
Wireless Mac-to-Mac transfer
Wireless migration is the simplest option when both Macs are available and you do not want to connect a cable. Turn on Wi‑Fi on both machines, place them close together, connect them to power, and follow the Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant prompts. The old Mac should be left available for the entire operation. Moving the computers apart, closing a laptop or allowing either one to lose power can interrupt the connection.
Wired Mac-to-Mac transfer
For a wired route, connect the Macs directly with a compatible Thunderbolt or Ethernet setup before selecting the source in Setup Assistant. Apple describes this type of connection as often faster than wireless. The statement does not mean every cable, adapter or port combination will work: verify the ports on both models. If the new Mac does not detect the old one, disconnect and check the physical connection, then return to the source-selection screen rather than assuming the transfer has started.
What Mac migration copies
Apple says Migration Assistant transfers documents, applications, user accounts and settings that you select. It does not delete information from the old Mac or replace the operating system on the new Mac. Applications that are incompatible with the new Mac, or that have been superseded by newer versions, may not transfer or may not work after they arrive. Plan to reinstall or update any application that fails its post-migration check.

Transfer from a Time Machine backup
A Time Machine backup is useful when the old Mac cannot be connected directly, when you have already retired it, or when you prefer to migrate from a known backup. Connect the backup drive when Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant asks for a source, choose the Time Machine option, and select the backup you want to use.
Apple says a Time Machine backup can restore personal files, applications and everything in the user account. Select the information you need, start the transfer and leave the backup drive connected until the assistant finishes. Afterward, open representative documents and applications on the new Mac instead of assuming that a completed transfer means every program is compatible.
If the backup is not offered as a source, confirm that the drive is connected and that the backup you expect is present. Do not erase or reformat the drive while troubleshooting; it may be the only copy of the older files.

Those version pairings can change as Apple releases new macOS editions. Check Apple’s Migration Assistant download page at the time you migrate and choose the release that explicitly names your new Mac’s macOS. Installing a version for a different destination system can prevent the computers from connecting or leave the assistant unable to proceed.
Run the Windows transfer
- Update Windows and the new MacBook, then restart if either system requests it.
- Quit open applications on the Windows PC.
- Install the matching Windows Migration Assistant version listed for the macOS on the new MacBook.
- Open Migration Assistant on the Windows PC and follow its prompts. On the new MacBook, choose the Windows PC as the transfer source in Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant.
- Compare the security code shown on both computers when prompted and confirm only if the codes match.
- Select the information to transfer and begin the process. Keep both computers powered and available until it completes.
- Sign in on the MacBook and check documents, photographs, mail-related files and other important data before changing the Windows PC.
Windows information that does not follow you
Apple specifically says that network settings and passwords are not transferred from Windows. You will need to reconnect to networks and enter credentials on the MacBook. Applications also require a separate compatibility check: a Windows program cannot simply be assumed to run as a Mac application, and the Migration Assistant process does not turn incompatible software into a macOS version.
If you already finished setting up the MacBook
You do not need to reset the MacBook just to migrate data. Open Migration Assistant on the new Mac and choose the same type of source you would have chosen in Setup Assistant. Apple’s current user guide places the control in System Settings → General → Transfer or Reset; wording and placement can vary with the macOS version installed.
- Connect the old Mac, backup drive or Windows PC as appropriate, and keep the source ready.
- Open the Transfer or Reset area in System Settings and start Migration Assistant.
- Choose the source type and follow the on-screen instructions on both computers.
- Verify the security code when one is shown, select the information to move, and start the transfer.
- After completion, inspect the migrated account and files before removing anything from the old computer.
Because the new Mac already has an account, read each selection screen carefully. Move only the accounts and categories you recognize, and preserve the source until you have verified the result.

What to check after the transfer
Verify files rather than only the transfer status
- Open several documents from different folders, including a file you edited recently on the old computer.
- Check your photographs, videos and other large personal folders for representative files.
- Confirm that the expected user account and its home-folder content are present.
- Look for any category that the assistant reported as skipped, incompatible or unavailable.
Test applications individually
Launch the applications you rely on most. An application can appear in the transferred list and still require an update, a compatible edition or a fresh sign-in. Apple warns that incompatible applications, and applications superseded by newer versions, may not transfer or may not work. Keep installers, license details and the old computer available until critical software passes your checks.
Reconnect services and devices
For a Windows source, recreate network connections and enter passwords because Apple says those settings and credentials do not migrate. Test printers, external storage and other accessories one at a time. If a device depends on a vendor-specific driver or utility, obtain the macOS-compatible version rather than copying a Windows installation.
Keep the old computer temporarily
Migration does not delete the old Mac’s information, so there is no reason to erase it immediately. Keep the old Mac or backup unchanged until you have confirmed the files and applications you need. This gives you a recovery path if a folder was not selected or an application proves incompatible.

Troubleshoot common migration problems
The new Mac cannot find the old Mac
- For wireless Mac migration, confirm Wi‑Fi is enabled on both Macs and move them closer together.
- Connect both Macs to power and leave them awake while the assistants are searching.
- If you selected a wired route, verify that the cable and both ports support the connection you chose.
- Restart the assistants and repeat the source-selection step rather than switching cables repeatedly during an active transfer.
The Windows PC is rejected or the connection fails
- Check the destination Mac’s exact macOS version.
- Remove the Windows Migration Assistant version you installed if it does not match Apple’s current listing for that macOS, then install the matching release.
- Update Windows, quit other applications and restart both computers before trying again.
- Keep the Windows PC available and follow the prompts on both screens; selecting the PC only on the Mac is not enough.
The transfer appears stuck
Do not infer failure from a slow-looking percentage. Apple does not promise a fixed completion time. Confirm that both computers remain powered and connected. If the assistant reports an error or stops responding, note the point at which it stopped, restart both computers, and retry using the same source. A wired Mac-to-Mac connection may be worth trying if wireless repeatedly fails; a Time Machine backup is an alternative when a direct source is unreliable.
An application is missing or will not open
Check whether the application was incompatible or had been replaced by a newer version; Apple identifies both as reasons an application may not transfer or work. Look for a current macOS edition from the application’s publisher and reinstall it if necessary. Do not delete the old installation until you have recovered its documents and settings.
Important files are absent
Return to the source and identify whether the files were outside the selected user account or category. Run Migration Assistant again for the missing source, or use the Time Machine backup if it contains the files. Keep the original source unchanged while you investigate.
A practical decision checklist
- New Mac has not been set up: use Setup Assistant and select the old Mac, Time Machine backup, storage device or Windows PC.
- New Mac is already configured: use Migration Assistant from System Settings → General → Transfer or Reset.
- Two Macs and no cable: use Wi‑Fi, keep the Macs near each other and connected to power.
- Two Macs and compatible ports: consider direct Thunderbolt or Ethernet because Apple says it is often faster.
- No reliable access to the old Mac: use a Time Machine backup.
- Windows source: install the Migration Assistant release matching the destination macOS; plan to recreate network settings and passwords.
- After every route: open important files, test essential applications and retain the old source until verification is complete.
What the migration process does—and does not—change
Migration Assistant is a transfer tool, not an operating-system replacement. Apple Support states: “It doesn’t delete information from your old Mac or replace the operating system (macOS) on your new Mac.” The process moves the categories you select, while compatibility limits can prevent some applications from moving or working. A successful setup therefore has two parts: completing the transfer and checking the resulting files, accounts and applications on the new MacBook.
