The safest way to move to a new Lenovo Yoga Tab is to transfer data during its first Android setup. Turn on the tablet, connect it to Wi‑Fi, choose Copy apps & data when prompted, and use either a compatible cable or the wireless option from your old Android device. If the old device is unavailable, sign in to the Google Account that contains your backup and restore what is available.
The exact screens depend on your Yoga Tab model and Android version. Google’s current Android Help describes the process as moving data from an old Android device to a new one, while Lenovo documents the common first-start prompts for its Android tablets. Neither source establishes one universal menu path for every Yoga Tab.
Before you start
Keep both devices available until you have checked the information you care about. Android’s setup transfer is useful, but it is not a complete clone of the old device.
Prepare the old and new devices
- Charge both devices, preferably while the transfer is running.
- Make sure the old device can be unlocked. Google may ask for its screen lock during a transfer or backup restore.
- Connect the old device and the Yoga Tab to Wi‑Fi. Wireless copying and backup restoration depend on the network being available.
- Check free storage on the Yoga Tab. If space is limited, the transfer screens may allow you to select less content.
- Have the Google Account credentials used on the old device or in its backup available.
- If you plan to use a cable, identify the ports on both devices before beginning. A cable must fit both ends, and an adapter may be required; the correct connector cannot be specified without the exact Yoga Tab model.
Decide whether you need a manual file copy
Setup copying covers many common items, but Google excludes several categories, including downloads such as PDFs, media in hidden folders, apps installed outside Google Play, data from apps that do not use Android backup, non-Google accounts and their data, contacts or calendars synchronized through other services, and some settings. If those items matter, plan a separate copy to a computer, an SD card, or another storage location before erasing the old device.

Run the Yoga Tab’s first-start setup
- Power on the tablet. Follow the welcome screen, choose the language and region, and accept the displayed license terms.
- Join a Wi‑Fi network. A reliable connection prevents interruptions while the tablet checks for updates, signs in to Google, and transfers data.
- Review date, time, and Google services. Lenovo’s general Android-tablet guidance lists network, date and time, Google services, and related choices as common first-start prompts. Wording and order vary by model and Android release.
- Set a screen lock when prompted. Choose the method you can reliably remember. The lock protects the tablet and may be requested when restoring data.
- Stop at the data-transfer screen. Select Copy apps & data or the equivalent transfer option instead of completing setup immediately. Google says the transfer may be offered only once during initial setup, so this is the best point to move information.
Google Android Help states: “When you set up your new device, you can move your data from your old Android device to your new Android device.” Read the on-screen instructions on the Yoga Tab rather than assuming that labels from another Android phone will be identical.
Choose the right transfer route
| Route | Use it when | Important constraints |
|---|---|---|
| Direct cable copy | Your old Android device is present and both devices can be connected. | The cable must fit both devices; an adapter may be necessary. Start it during setup. Google’s cable-transfer instructions describe the process. |
| Wireless direct copy | Your old Android device is present but you do not have a compatible data cable. | Both devices need Wi‑Fi and on-screen pairing. Keep them available until copying finishes. Google says wired and wireless direct transfer support the same data. |
| Google Account backup restore | The old device is unavailable or a direct connection is impractical. | A previous backup and access to its Google Account are required. Only data present in that backup can be restored. See Google’s switch-to-a-new-device guidance. |
Google’s practical estimate is a few minutes to a few hours, depending on how much content is being moved. It is operational guidance, not a guaranteed completion time.
Use this decision checklist
Choose direct cable copying when the old Android device is in your hands and you can connect both ports with a data-capable cable or adapter. Choose wireless copying when the old device is available but the connectors do not match or no suitable cable is on hand. Choose Google backup restoration when the old device is missing, damaged, or cannot stay connected. In every case, compare the available storage on the Yoga Tab with the amount offered for transfer, and remember that a backup restore can only include content that was backed up or synchronized. If you need PDFs, hidden-folder media, non-Play apps, or other excluded files, plan a separate file copy regardless of which primary route you choose.
Transfer with a cable
1. Connect the devices correctly
At the Yoga Tab’s transfer screen, choose the option to copy from an old Android device. Connect the two devices with a USB data cable that fits both ports. If the plugs differ, use a compatible adapter. A charging-only cable will not provide the required data connection.
2. Unlock and approve the connection
Unlock the old device and follow the pairing or permission prompts shown on both screens. Do not disconnect either device while the tablet is identifying the source.
3. Select what to copy
Review the categories and amount of data offered. If the Yoga Tab reports insufficient storage, deselect optional items and plan to copy excluded files separately. The available selections vary with the old device, Android version, and backup support of individual apps.
4. Leave the devices connected
Keep both screens available, powered, and physically connected until the transfer reports completion. If the cable is not recognized, check that each end is fully seated, confirm that the cable supports data, and try the wireless route instead of repeatedly interrupting setup. Do not buy a connector based only on the words “Yoga Tab”; Lenovo has released multiple models with different ports.

Transfer wirelessly
1. Start from the setup prompt
Choose the wireless or no-cable option on the Yoga Tab’s Copy apps & data screen. The tablet will display the pairing instructions for the old Android device.
2. Pair the old device
Follow the exact on-screen pairing steps and approve requests on the old device. Keep both devices close enough for the method shown on screen and connected to Wi‑Fi. The labels and pairing sequence can differ between Android versions.
3. Select and monitor the transfer
Choose the data categories you want, then leave both devices powered and available. Wireless copying can take from a few minutes to a few hours depending on the volume of data. Google documents the wired and wireless methods as supporting the same data, so wireless is not automatically a reduced-content mode.
Restore from a Google Account backup
Use the same account
On the setup screen, choose the option to restore from a backup rather than copying from a nearby device. Sign in with the Google Account that was used to back up the old device, then select the offered backup and data categories.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Supply the old screen lock if requested
Google may ask for the old device’s PIN, pattern, or password to authorize the restore. If you cannot provide it, the backup may not be usable through that step.
Understand the limit of a backup
A restore can only bring back information that was actually backed up or synchronized. It cannot recreate files that were never included, data kept solely inside an app that does not use Android backup, or accounts and content belonging to other services. Sign in to those services separately after setup.
What Android setup transfer can and cannot copy
| Often included by Google’s setup transfer | Not included through that setup process |
|---|---|
| Apps and certain app data; music; photos and videos; contacts stored on the phone or SIM; text and multimedia messages; most settings with variation; wallpaper; and call history. | Downloads such as PDFs; media in hidden folders; apps not installed from Google Play; data from apps that do not use Android backup; non-Google accounts and their data; contacts or calendars synchronized to other services; ringtones; and certain settings. |
“Often included” does not mean every item is guaranteed. App developers decide whether their data participates in Android backup, and settings differ by Android release and device. Treat the transfer as a migration of supported data, not a byte-for-byte image.

Why an item may appear to be missing
A copied app may still require you to sign in, and an app’s private data may not return if that app does not use Android backup. Contacts can be present in one account but absent from another, while calendars may belong to a service other than Google. A photo or document can also be outside the folders recognized by setup copying. Check the relevant account, app, and file location before concluding that the entire transfer failed.
Move files that setup does not cover
Copy through a computer
Lenovo’s general Android-tablet FAQ describes a file-only backup route. Connect the tablet to a computer by USB, unlock it, and choose File Transfer when the USB notification appears. Some models show Media device (MTP) instead. Open the tablet in the computer’s file browser and copy personal folders such as documents, recordings, or camera files to the computer, then connect the Yoga Tab and copy them into the appropriate folders.
This procedure moves files; it does not migrate installed apps, Android settings, or app-private databases. Lenovo also mentions SD-card and remote-network alternatives for file backup. See the regional Lenovo Android Tablets FAQ for those general options.
Reconnect other accounts
Contacts, calendars, cloud files, email, and notes synchronized with services other than Google may reappear only after you install the relevant app and sign in. Check each service’s own export, sync, or restore controls rather than assuming that Android setup copied it.
Handle app-specific content separately
Some apps require an in-app backup, a transfer code, or a fresh sign-in. Open important apps on the Yoga Tab and look for missing conversations, saved projects, downloaded media, or offline files before retiring the old device.

If you skipped transfer or it failed
The tablet is already on the home screen
Google says a Finish setting up prompt may appear after a few days on some devices. Whether a post-setup transfer option exists depends on the manufacturer and Android version. If no prompt appears, use the model’s documented reset-and-setup process only after securing your data, or copy unsupported files manually. Do not assume that one universal Yoga Tab menu path exists. Google’s troubleshooting guidance is at Can’t transfer data to a new Android device.
The old device is not detected
- Confirm that the old device is unlocked and responding to its approval prompt.
- For a wired attempt, verify that the cable carries data and that any adapter matches both ports.
- Restart the setup attempt and choose wireless copying if a suitable cable is unavailable.
- If neither direct method works, restore the available Google Account backup and copy remaining files through a computer.
The transfer stops because of storage
Return to the selection screen if it is offered and remove optional categories. Prioritize contacts, photos, messages, and essential apps, then manually copy large videos, downloads, and other files after setup. Never delete the originals merely to make the first transfer fit.

Some expected content is missing
First check whether the item belongs to Google’s excluded categories. Then open the relevant app, sign in to the correct account, and inspect its own restore or sync status. For files, compare the old device’s folders with the folders on the Yoga Tab or the computer copy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Model-specific Lenovo cautions
The name “Yoga Tab” covers multiple generations and configurations. The exact model is needed before choosing a cable, adapter, or device-specific recovery utility. Connector type, Android version, and available setup screens can differ.
Lenovo’s FAQ for the Yoga Tab Plus (TB520FU) describes Lenovo Software Fix, formerly Rescue and Smart Assistant, as including file transfer between tablets or phones and PCs. That is evidence for the TB520FU model only; it does not establish full user-profile migration or universal compatibility with every Yoga Tab. The same FAQ says Lenovo Vantage is preinstalled on that model, which should not be generalized to other Yoga Tab devices. See the Yoga Tab Plus TB520FU FAQ if that is your model.
Verify the new tablet before wiping the old one
Use the Yoga Tab for a careful comparison while the old device is still usable:
- Open several recent photos and videos, including items stored outside the camera folder.
- Search contacts and place a test call or message if those functions are part of your setup.
- Check recent text and multimedia messages and confirm that essential conversations are present.
- Launch critical apps, sign in to their required accounts, and verify saved work or cloud synchronization.
- Open downloaded documents, recordings, and other manually copied files.
- Confirm that the screen lock, Wi‑Fi networks, notifications, and accessibility choices meet your needs.
- Keep the old device untouched until these checks are complete and any missing items have been exported.
Only after verification should you remove accounts, factory-reset, recycle, or hand over the old device. A successful setup transfer is measured by the content you can actually open and use, not merely by a completion message.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I transfer data after I finish setting up the Yoga Tab?
Sometimes. Google says a Finish setting up prompt may appear after a few days on some devices, but later transfer choices depend on the manufacturer and Android version. If no prompt appears, manually copy unsupported files or use the model’s documented reset-and-setup process after protecting your data.

Is a cable better than wireless transfer?
Neither is universally better. Google documents both methods for Android-to-Android setup and says they support the same data. Use a cable when the old device is present and the ports can be connected; use wireless when no compatible data cable is available. Both devices should remain powered and available until copying ends.

What cable or adapter should I buy for a Lenovo Yoga Tab?
Identify the exact Yoga Tab model and the old device’s port first. The cable must support data and fit both devices, and an adapter may be required. Because Yoga Tab models differ, do not choose a connector based only on the product family name.
Will Google backup restore every app and file?
No. Restore can provide only the data that was actually backed up or synchronized. Google lists downloads such as PDFs, hidden-folder media, apps installed outside Google Play, data from apps without Android backup, non-Google accounts, some contacts and calendars, ringtones, and certain settings as exclusions from setup copying.
Why is my old device asking for its screen lock?
Google may request the old device’s PIN, pattern, or password during direct transfer or backup restoration. This is part of authorizing the move. Keep the old device unlocked and available while setup is running.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Lenovo’s Yoga Tab Plus TB520FU FAQ describes Lenovo Software Fix, formerly Rescue and Smart Assistant, as supporting file transfer between tablets or phones and PCs. That model-specific description does not establish full profile migration or universal compatibility with every Yoga Tab. Android setup remains the primary route for apps and supported settings.
What should I do with the old tablet after transfer?
Do not erase it immediately. Open photos, videos, contacts, messages, essential apps, downloads, and manually copied files on the Yoga Tab. Confirm required accounts and saved work, export anything missing, and only then remove accounts or factory-reset the old device.
The Bottom Line
Start the Yoga Tab’s first setup, connect both devices to Wi‑Fi, and choose Copy apps & data while the option is available. Use a correctly fitted data cable or wireless pairing for a nearby Android device; otherwise restore the available Google Account backup. Because setup copying has clear exclusions, manually copy files and reconnect other accounts, then verify important content before wiping the old tablet.
