The safest sequence is simple: preserve a copy on the old phone first, then choose the transfer method that matches that phone. Use Quick Start, an iCloud backup, or a computer backup when the old phone is an iPhone. Use Apple’s Move to iOS flow while setting up the new iPhone when the old phone is Android. Do not erase, trade in, or hand over the old phone until you have checked your photos, conversations, and essential apps on the new device.

No transfer method guarantees that every third-party app’s internal data or account state will move. Treat the migration as complete only after a personal verification pass.

Prepare before turning on the new iPhone

Preparation prevents the most serious mistake: discovering a missing item after the source phone has been erased. Keep the old phone, its backup, or both available until the new iPhone has passed your checks.

Have these items ready

  • The Apple Account password used on the old iPhone, if you are moving from iPhone.
  • A Wi-Fi connection or another working internet connection.
  • The old phone, powered on, or a recent backup made to iCloud or a computer.
  • Enough free space on the new iPhone for the material you intend to move.
  • Power for both phones during a migration. A transfer can take longer when a large amount of data or a slow network is involved.

Update the old iPhone and make a fresh backup before beginning. A backup is your recovery point if a direct migration is interrupted or if you later discover that an item was not copied.

Apple iPhone 17 Pro, US Version, 1TB, eSIM, Deep Blue- Unlocked (Renewed Premium)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Use Apple’s temporary iCloud space when eligible

If you have bought a new iPhone and do not have enough iCloud capacity for a backup, Apple says eligible purchasers can receive temporary iCloud storage for up to three weeks. On the old iPhone, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Get Started and follow the prompts. Eligibility and the screens offered can change, so read the notice shown on the device rather than assuming the extra space is permanent.

Do not start with an empty source

Check that the old phone still shows recent photos, messages, and the apps you rely on. If you use a computer backup, identify the computer and the backup you will restore before opening the new iPhone’s setup screens. If the old phone is damaged but a backup exists, use the backup route instead of repeatedly attempting a direct transfer.

Choose the route that matches your old phone

Your choice affects whether you can use the new iPhone while data is arriving and whether the old phone is tied up until the process ends.

Old phone and route What happens When it fits Important conditions
iPhone to iPhone: Quick Start with direct transfer Data moves from the nearby old device to the new one; both devices wait for migration to finish. You want a device-to-device move and have both iPhones available. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be on for the old iPhone; keep both phones close and connected to power.
iPhone to iPhone: Quick Start with iCloud download The new iPhone starts while apps and data continue downloading in the background. You need to begin using the new phone before every app and item has downloaded. An internet connection is required, and transfer time varies with network conditions and data volume.
Restore from an iCloud backup The new iPhone rebuilds from a backup you select during setup. The old iPhone is unavailable, or you deliberately want to restore a known backup. Select the correct, recent backup and keep the new phone online while content returns.
Restore from a computer backup The new iPhone is restored from a backup made with Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, as applicable. You have a usable computer backup or limited iCloud space. Use the computer containing the backup and the cable or connection requested by the setup process.
Android to iPhone: Move to iOS Selected Android content is copied during the iPhone’s initial setup. The new iPhone has not yet completed setup, or you are willing to erase it and start again. Check capacity first; keep both phones powered and leave Move to iOS open until the iPhone progress bar finishes.
Android to an already configured iPhone: manual transfer You move categories separately using a computer, cloud services, account sign-ins, and App Store downloads. You do not want to erase the new iPhone. Music, books, PDFs, and some app data require their own manual process.

Apple describes the iCloud-download option this way: “If you download from iCloud, your apps and data download in the background so that you can start using your new device right away.” Direct transfer is different: you wait with both phones until the migration reports completion.

Move everything from an old iPhone with Quick Start

1. Put both iPhones in a safe starting state

  1. Place the old and new iPhones next to each other.
  2. On the old iPhone, turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Connect both phones to power so neither battery becomes the reason a transfer stops.
  3. Confirm that the old phone is unlocked and that you know the Apple Account password.
  4. Turn on the new iPhone. Quick Start should appear on the old phone; follow the on-screen instructions to authenticate and continue setup.

If Quick Start does not appear, verify the old phone’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings, keep the devices close, and use an iCloud or computer-backup route if the prompt still does not become available. Do not erase the old phone while you are troubleshooting.

2. Choose direct transfer or iCloud download

Quick Start presents the choice between moving directly from the old iPhone and downloading from iCloud.

  • Direct transfer: choose this when you want the new iPhone built from the nearby phone in one migration. Keep the phones together and powered until the process completes. You cannot treat the new iPhone as ready merely because its first screen appears; wait for the transfer status to finish.
  • iCloud download: choose this when starting to use the new iPhone quickly matters more than having every app ready immediately. The phone can become usable while apps and data continue downloading in the background. Leave it connected to the internet and power so that work can continue.

Apple does not give a universal completion time. Its guidance says, “Transfer times can vary based on factors such as network conditions and the amount of data being transferred.” A large photo library and a busy or slow network therefore require more patience than a small backup.

Apple iPhone 17, US Version, 256GB, eSIM, Mist Blue- Unlocked (Renewed Premium)

3. Keep the migration undisturbed

Do not move the phones far apart, disconnect power unnecessarily, or close a transfer screen that tells you to wait. If you selected iCloud download, the new iPhone may be usable before the background work is over; avoid assuming that an app that is still showing a download indicator has failed.

4. Use a wired option when it is practical

Apple also documents wired phone-to-phone migration. A cable can be useful when the models and ports support a compatible connection, but it is not required for Quick Start, iCloud, or computer backups. Verify both phones’ ports and the cable before relying on it; wireless transfer remains the fallback when the cable is unsuitable.

Restore an iPhone from iCloud or a computer backup

iCloud backup restoration

Choose the iCloud-backup option during the new iPhone’s setup and select the backup made from the old phone. Check its date and device description so you do not restore an older phone or an outdated copy by mistake. Keep the iPhone connected to the internet as apps and other content return. The new phone can continue downloading items after the initial setup screens have ended.

This route is useful when the old iPhone is unavailable, when Quick Start cannot establish a connection, or when you want the predictability of a saved backup rather than a live device-to-device move. It still depends on the backup containing the photos, messages, and app information you need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Computer backup restoration

During setup, select the option to restore from a computer backup, then use the computer that contains the copy made with Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, as applicable to that computer. Choose the intended backup and follow the prompts until the restore is accepted. Keep the new iPhone connected as requested; a backup restore is not complete simply because the phone reaches its Home Screen.

A computer backup is especially useful when iCloud capacity or internet bandwidth is limited. It is only as current as the last backup, so check the backup date before relying on it as your only copy.

Transfer from Android with Move to iOS

Move to iOS is the supported path when the new iPhone is still in its initial setup. Start with the iPhone rather than trying to copy files piecemeal first.

  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

1. Check capacity and power

Review the amount of material on the Android phone and the storage available on the iPhone. The selected content must fit. Apple warns that a migration can be partial if the new device runs out of space, so capacity is a decision to make before pressing start, not after the bar stops.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect both phones to power. Keep the Android phone and the iPhone near each other and avoid using either one for unrelated tasks while the transfer is running.

2. Select the Android transfer during iPhone setup

  1. Turn on the new iPhone and proceed through setup until the Transfer Your Apps & Data screen.
  2. Choose From Android.
  3. On the Android phone, open Move to iOS and follow its instructions and the prompts displayed on both devices.
  4. Select the categories you want to bring across, then leave Move to iOS open.
  5. Wait until the loading bar on the iPhone finishes, even if the Android phone appears to have completed its part earlier.

Compatible Android software and hardware may present an additional cable-based or app-free transfer path. If that option appears, use it only when the prompts confirm that your particular devices support it. The available choices vary by model and software version.

3. Know what Apple lists as supported

Apple lists these categories among the content Move to iOS can transfer:

  • Contacts.
  • Message history and SMS.
  • Camera photos, videos, and albums.
  • Files and folders.
  • Settings.
  • Web bookmarks.
  • Email accounts.
  • WhatsApp messages and media.
  • Voice Memos.
  • Call history.
  • Calendars.

Some free apps can be matched only when the app is available in both Google Play and the App Store and supports the transfer feature. A matching app listing does not establish that every account state, downloaded file, or in-app database will be identical on the iPhone. Plan to sign in and check important apps individually.

4. Move unsupported categories separately

Apple identifies music, books, and PDFs as items that require manual transfer. Keep the originals on the Android phone or another backup while you copy them through a computer or the service that stores them. Do not assume that a file visible in an Android app has already become a file available to an iPhone app.

If the new iPhone has already been set up

Use Move to iOS by starting over

Apple’s Move to iOS flow is tied to initial setup. If setup is complete, Apple says you must erase the new iPhone and start again to use that migration path. From the iPhone, use Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone and choose the erase option, but do this only after confirming that the new phone contains nothing you need to keep or after backing it up.

After the erase, repeat the setup sequence and choose From Android on Transfer Your Apps & Data. The same storage, power, supported-category, and verification requirements still apply.

Keep the existing setup and transfer manually

If erasing is unacceptable, move the categories one at a time:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Photos and videos: copy them through a computer, or use a cloud photo service and sign in on the iPhone.
  • Documents: use the cloud service that stores them or copy them with a computer.
  • Cloud-based accounts: install the relevant iPhone app and sign in. An account login may bring back server-stored material, but it does not guarantee that every local Android app file will return.
  • Apps: reinstall available versions from the App Store and sign in to each important service.
  • Music, books, and PDFs: copy or download them through the computer or service that owns the files.

Manual transfer takes longer, but it avoids deleting an iPhone that is already configured. Keep a list of high-priority apps and files so that an item does not disappear simply because it was not part of the first pass.

What “all my apps and messages” really means

A migration copies supported content; it is not a blanket promise that every app behaves exactly as it did on the old phone. Distinguish between the app itself, the account behind it, and data stored only inside that app.

Apps

On iPhone-to-iPhone migration, the new device can restore apps and their associated data from the selected transfer or backup. On Android-to-iPhone migration, only some free apps can be matched, and only when they exist in both stores and support the feature. Paid apps, region-specific listings, discontinued apps, and apps without an iPhone version need a replacement or manual solution.

Messages and conversations

Message history and SMS are listed as Move to iOS categories, and a direct iPhone migration or backup can bring supported iPhone data across. After setup, open representative conversations rather than checking only that a messaging app icon exists. For third-party services, sign in and confirm that the service has restored its own history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Photos and albums

Android camera photos, videos, and albums are among the listed Move to iOS categories. For any route, open several older and recent items, check albums you care about, and confirm that the photos are available on the new device before retiring the source phone.

Troubleshoot the problems that cause incomplete moves

Quick Start never appears

  • Confirm that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on the old iPhone.
  • Keep both phones close, unlocked as requested, and connected to power.
  • If the prompt remains unavailable, switch to an iCloud backup or a computer backup rather than erasing the old phone.

The transfer seems stuck

First check whether the screen is still reporting progress. Network conditions and the amount of data directly affect transfer time, so a large library may take substantially longer than a small one. Keep the phones powered and in the required app or setup screen. If the process ends with an error, return to the preserved source or backup and start the appropriate route again; do not treat an interrupted attempt as proof that the old data is safe to delete.

The new iPhone runs out of space

A lack of capacity can make an Android transfer partial. Stop and assess what must move, then free space on the destination or choose a smaller, deliberate set of categories. Retain the originals on the old phone while deciding; deleting source photos to make the transfer fit removes your recovery copy.

An app is present but its data is missing

Open the app, sign in, and check whether its service restores data from the account. If it used local-only storage or has no iPhone version, the transfer may not be able to recreate that state. Keep the old phone available while you export or otherwise preserve anything the app can still display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Setup was completed before Android transfer

Choose between erasing the new iPhone and rerunning Move to iOS, or keep the setup and follow the manual category-by-category process. There is no supported way to insert the complete Move to iOS setup flow into an already completed configuration without starting over.

Verify the new iPhone before erasing the old one

Use a deliberate checklist rather than relying on the presence of a completed setup screen:

  1. Open recent, older, and album-organized photos and videos.
  2. Open important message threads and confirm the expected history is present.
  3. Launch essential apps, sign in where requested, and check the data you actually need from each one.
  4. Review contacts, calendars, call history, files, and other categories relevant to your work or personal records.
  5. Check that manually transferred music, books, PDFs, and documents open correctly.
  6. Confirm that the new iPhone has finished any visible background app downloads.
  7. Make or confirm a backup of the new iPhone before disposing of the old device.

Only after these checks should you erase, trade in, recycle, or give away the old phone. Keep any remaining backup until you are satisfied that the new iPhone contains the information you cannot replace.

The dependable decision

For an old iPhone, Quick Start is usually the most direct choice: select direct transfer when both devices can remain occupied, or iCloud download when you need to start using the new phone while content arrives in the background. For an old Android phone, start with Move to iOS during setup, check capacity, and expect manual work for music, books, PDFs, and some app data. If setup is already complete, erase and restart only when the complete migration is worth it; otherwise transfer each category manually. In every case, the old phone or a verified backup is your safety net until the new iPhone passes the photo, message, and app checks.
