The reliable setup order is: confirm the PC can POST, install Windows only if it is not already installed, finish Windows setup and get online, run Windows Update, install drivers for the exact hardware from official support pages, restart, and verify display, network, audio, and Device Manager. A prebuilt Windows PC and a DIY build without an operating system follow different paths, so do not reinstall Windows or flash the BIOS unless a specific problem requires it.

Before pressing the power button

Disconnect unnecessary USB devices and check the connections that determine whether you get a picture and a successful POST (Power-On Self-Test).

  • If a discrete graphics card is installed, connect the monitor to the graphics card’s video output, not the motherboard’s video port. The motherboard output may be inactive when the processor has no integrated graphics or when the system is configured to use the discrete card.
  • Seat the monitor cable at both ends. Check the graphics-card power plugs, the motherboard’s main power connector, and the processor power connector.
  • Connect a keyboard so you can enter firmware setup or choose a boot device.
  • Have a USB flash drive available only if you need to install Windows on a DIY system or transfer a network driver to a PC that cannot get online.

Turn the PC on and wait for one of two useful results: firmware setup (often called BIOS or UEFI) or a Windows installer. A prebuilt computer with Windows normally continues to its existing Windows setup. If the screen remains blank, recheck the display connection and power leads before changing firmware settings.

Choose the correct setup path

Do not assume that every new gaming PC needs a clean Windows installation. The deciding factor is whether the computer already has a valid operating system.

Situation Is Windows installation required? First operating-system step Where exact-model drivers come from
Branded or custom prebuilt sold with Windows Usually no Complete the existing Windows first-run setup The PC maker’s support page, plus the component maker when appropriate
DIY build with no operating system Yes Boot Windows installation media from USB and select the target drive The motherboard maker for board-specific devices and the graphics-card maker for the GPU
Existing installation is damaged or intentionally replaced Only if you have chosen a clean reinstall Back up needed files, then boot the installer Use the same exact-model sources as for a custom build

A PC that was sold with Windows can normally be set up without erasing its factory installation. A clean install is a deliberate choice, not a routine first-boot requirement.

First boot and firmware access

Confirm a successful POST

Press the power button and look for a manufacturer logo, firmware screen, or Windows installer. Reaching any of these confirms that the basic processor, memory, graphics output, and boot path are functioning well enough to continue. If the machine repeatedly powers off, displays a diagnostic light or code, or never produces video, resolve that hardware issue before installing drivers.

Open BIOS/UEFI or the boot menu

The key varies by motherboard. Delete is commonly shown in build instructions, but the motherboard manual is the authority when the on-screen prompt is missing or unclear. Press the indicated key repeatedly immediately after powering on. Use the boot menu when you only need to start a USB installer; use firmware setup when you need to inspect or change boot order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set a USB installer as the boot target

For a DIY computer without Windows, insert the installation USB, open the boot menu, and select it. If the firmware requires a permanent order, place the USB device first and the intended internal drive second. Save the change and restart. Remove the USB after installation when the computer begins booting from the internal drive, or select the internal drive explicitly if the installer starts again.

Do not treat a BIOS update, memory overclock, or vendor control utility as part of this first-boot checklist. Those actions address particular compatibility or tuning needs and introduce risks that are unrelated to basic setup.

Install Windows only on a system that needs it

DIY clean installation

  1. Create or obtain official Windows installation media on a USB flash drive using another working computer if necessary.
  2. Insert the USB drive into the new PC and select it from the boot menu.
  3. Follow the installer until it asks where to install Windows. Select the intended internal drive and its appropriate unallocated space or existing partitions, taking care not to erase a drive containing files you need.
  4. Allow the computer to restart. If it returns to the installer, remove the USB or select the internal drive as the boot device.
  5. Continue with the Windows first-run screens, including account, privacy, region, keyboard, and network choices.

The exact screens can vary by Windows edition and release. The important distinction is that the USB path is for a computer without a usable operating system or for a reinstall you intentionally initiated.

Prebuilt with Windows already present

Power on the computer and complete the setup screens shown by the existing installation. Do not boot from a Windows USB or delete the factory partitions simply because the PC is new. The manufacturer may have supplied hardware-specific drivers, recovery tools, or an activation entitlement in that installation.

Finish Windows setup and establish connectivity

Internet access lets setup obtain current Windows features, security fixes, and baseline drivers. Connect Ethernet if available, or choose the correct Wi-Fi network during setup.

If Wi-Fi is missing

A clean installation may not include the driver for the built-in wireless adapter. On another device, download the network driver for the exact PC, motherboard, or adapter model from its official support page. Copy the installer to a USB flash drive, connect that drive to the new PC, and run the driver installer. Once the adapter works, connect to Wi-Fi and continue updating Windows.

If wired networking is the practical workaround

Use an Ethernet cable when the computer has a working Ethernet port and a suitable router or network switch. If the PC has no Ethernet port, a compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter can provide a temporary wired path, but it also needs a driver that Windows recognizes or that you can install offline.

Run Windows Update before chasing individual drivers

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates and install the available updates.
  3. Restart whenever Windows requests it.
  4. Return to Settings > Windows Update after the restart and check again. Additional updates can appear only after earlier servicing components are installed.

Windows Update supplies a useful baseline for many devices, including some chipset, network, audio, and graphics components. It is not a guarantee that every model-specific package is present. After Windows is current, identify the actual hardware and check the relevant official support pages for anything still missing or for a driver that the system maker specifically requires.

Identify the hardware before installing drivers

Driver names are not a shopping list. Install a package because the corresponding hardware exists in your computer, not because the word “chipset,” “audio,” or “gaming” sounds relevant.

  • System or motherboard model: Use the PC maker’s model and serial information for a prebuilt. For a custom build, record the motherboard manufacturer’s exact model and revision if listed.
  • Processor platform: Note whether the system uses an AMD Ryzen platform, an Intel platform, or another supported platform. This determines which chipset package applies.
  • Discrete graphics card: Record the exact GPU model and whether it is from AMD, NVIDIA, or another vendor. A discrete card normally needs its own graphics driver even when the processor also has integrated graphics.
  • Network hardware: Identify each Ethernet and Wi-Fi adapter. A motherboard can use different network controllers across revisions, so the board model alone may not identify every package.
  • Audio hardware: Identify the motherboard or PC audio device. Install an audio package only when that device is present or Windows reports it missing.

Open Device Manager to look for devices with a warning icon. Expand categories such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and System devices. Device Manager is a verification aid, not a reason to install every optional download listed on a support page.

Install drivers from the right official source

Prebuilt computer

Start with the PC manufacturer’s support page and enter the exact model. That page is the best place for system-specific chipset, network, audio, storage-controller, and hotkey packages. It also accounts for the manufacturer’s chosen hardware combination. If the manufacturer directs you to a component maker for a newer graphics package, follow that documented path.

Custom-built computer

Use the motherboard manufacturer’s support page for board-specific chipset, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, audio, and related system devices. Use the graphics-card or GPU manufacturer’s official download page for the discrete graphics driver. Choose the package that matches the installed Windows version and the exact hardware family.

AMD driver choices

AMD’s Auto-Detect and Install tool checks for compatible Radeon graphics, Ryzen chipsets, and the Windows version, then downloads supporting drivers for installation. It is therefore relevant only to systems containing supported AMD hardware. AMD labels packages as Recommended or Optional: Recommended packages are described as offering AMD’s best stability and Microsoft certification, while Optional packages are newer and include newer features and bug fixes. Those labels describe AMD’s packaging policy, not a universal promise that one choice is best for every user.

Other graphics and component vendors

For non-AMD hardware, use the vendor’s official support or download page for the exact product and Windows version. Avoid hard-coded “latest driver” numbers in an evergreen setup guide: packages change, and a current version for one model or Windows release may be wrong for another.

Chipset first, graphics next, or Windows first?

Vendor guides differ on the precise order. A safe common sequence is to complete Windows setup, get a working network connection, run Windows Update, install any remaining exact-hardware chipset and system drivers, install the discrete graphics driver, and restart when requested. If a PC maker gives a model-specific order, use that order. The goal is correct hardware matching and a stable restart, not adherence to an arbitrary universal sequence.

  • Device Manager: Look for unknown devices or yellow warning icons. Open a device’s properties to read its status and hardware identification, then return to the exact PC or component support page for the missing package.
  • Activation: Open Settings > System > Activation. Confirm that the installed Windows edition matches the license. A first-time device or a different edition can require a valid product key or digital license; if Windows is not activated, the Microsoft Store can provide a digital license after installation.

Activation is separate from driver installation. A computer can have fully working hardware while Windows still needs a valid license or an edition correction.

What not to install or change on day one

  • Do not reinstall Windows on a working prebuilt merely to make it feel “clean.” You can remove unwanted applications later without destroying the supplied recovery environment.
  • Do not install every motherboard utility. Fan-control, lighting, update, telemetry, and overlay tools are optional and should solve a specific need.
  • Do not flash the BIOS as a routine step. Consider firmware updates only for a documented compatibility, security, or stability reason, and follow the motherboard maker’s exact procedure.
  • Do not overclock during initial validation. Establish that stock settings, drivers, cooling, and memory are stable before tuning performance.
  • Do not use paid driver-updater software as a substitute for identification. Windows Update and official PC or component support pages provide the relevant sources for this setup task.

Troubleshooting branches

The PC powers on but shows no image

  1. Confirm that the monitor is powered on and set to the input used by the PC.
  2. Move the monitor cable to the discrete graphics card if one is installed.
  3. Reseat the cable and verify graphics-card power connectors.
  4. Try the motherboard manual’s firmware key and check whether the system reaches BIOS/UEFI.
  5. If there is still no POST, use the motherboard’s diagnostic indicators or manual rather than attempting Windows or driver changes.

Windows setup cannot find Wi-Fi

Use another device to obtain the exact network driver, copy it to USB, install it offline, and then connect. Ethernet is an alternative when available; a USB-to-Ethernet adapter is conditional on having a compatible adapter and driver.

A device remains unknown after Windows Update

Record the PC or motherboard model, inspect the unknown device’s hardware identification in Device Manager, and download the matching package from the PC or component maker. Do not install a similarly named driver for hardware your system does not contain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The graphics driver installer fails

Confirm the GPU model, Windows edition and version, and whether the card is actually listed under Display adapters. Remove the incorrect assumption about the hardware source, then obtain the package from the GPU maker or the prebuilt manufacturer’s support page. Restart and check Device Manager before trying another package.

Windows says it is not activated

Open Settings > System > Activation and compare the installed edition with the license you own. A first-use device or an edition change may require a valid key or digital license. Purchasing a digital license through the Microsoft Store is an available route after installation; driver installation cannot activate an unlicensed edition.

A practical completion checklist

  • The monitor is connected to the correct video output and the PC reaches firmware or Windows.
  • Windows was installed only when the machine lacked a usable operating system.
  • First-run setup is complete and the PC has a working network path, or the network driver was transferred offline.
  • Windows Update has been run, the PC restarted, and updates checked again.
  • The exact system, motherboard, processor platform, GPU, network, and audio hardware have been identified.
  • Only applicable drivers were installed from the PC, motherboard, or component maker.
  • Display modes, network, audio, Device Manager, and Windows activation have been checked.
  • Optional tuning utilities, overclocking, and BIOS changes were left until a specific need exists.
