The safest first-day order for a new Windows gaming laptop is: finish Windows setup on a trusted network, run Windows Update, restart, check the laptop maker’s support page or supported utility for model-specific packages, inspect Device Manager, test core hardware, and only then consider graphics or BIOS updates. Do not assume every optional driver, generic graphics package, or BIOS release belongs on every new machine.

This guide covers Windows 11 and Windows 10 behavior. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so a laptop still running it should be evaluated for an upgrade to Windows 11 or replacement according to its hardware and your security requirements.

The correct first-day order

Updates can overlap: Windows Update may install a display or chipset driver while the manufacturer’s utility offers another version. A controlled order reduces the chance of mixing packages before you know whether the laptop is working properly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Complete Windows’ initial setup and connect to a trusted, stable network.
  2. Run Windows Update, install available updates, and restart.
  3. Review optional driver updates only if you have a reason to install them.
  4. Record the exact laptop model, serial number, Windows edition, and build.
  5. Check the manufacturer’s official support route for model-specific drivers, utilities, and firmware.
  6. Inspect Device Manager for missing or problem devices.
  7. Test Wi-Fi, audio, keyboard, touchpad, display, charging, and both graphics processors if present.
  8. Handle graphics packages and BIOS updates as model-specific decisions.
  9. If an update creates a fault, roll back the recent driver before adding unrelated changes.

That order is a workflow, not a demand to install every item offered by Windows or the laptop maker.

Finish Windows setup on a trusted connection

Use a home or other trusted network rather than an unknown public hotspot while creating the Windows account and applying updates. Keep the charger connected during setup and large update sessions. The exact welcome screens, account choices, privacy prompts, and required sign-in depend on the Windows version and the laptop model, so there is no single universal setup screen sequence.

Record the information that identifies your installation

Before downloading anything manually, note:

  • The full model name and model number printed on the chassis, packaging, or original invoice.
  • The serial number, if the maker uses it to identify a support page.
  • Windows edition and version. Press Windows key + R, enter winver, and press Enter to see the installed version and build.
  • Whether the laptop has integrated graphics only or both integrated and discrete graphics.

These details prevent a common mistake: installing a package intended for a similar-looking laptop with a different display panel, processor, wireless adapter, or graphics configuration.

Run Windows Update before manual driver downloads

In Windows 11, recommended drivers can arrive automatically through Windows Update. Microsoft’s support guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11 treats Windows Update as the normal first stop for drivers and system updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install normal updates

  1. Open Settings.
  2. In Windows 11, select Windows Update in the left column. In Windows 10, open Update & Security, then Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install the available updates and follow any restart prompt.
  5. After the restart, return to the same page and check again. A second pass can appear after servicing components or a previous update has completed.

Microsoft instructs users to restart after updates even when Windows does not explicitly request one. Restarting also gives you a clean point from which to test the laptop before installing additional packages.

Understand optional driver updates

Windows 11 lists optional drivers at Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates. They are not installed automatically. Review the device name, version, and date before selecting one; leave it alone when the related hardware works and there is no compatibility, stability, or feature reason to change it.

Optional updates can be useful when Windows Update did not provide a needed device driver, when a manufacturer documents a fix for your model, or when a specific hardware problem matches the update’s description. They are not a checklist that every new owner must complete.

Allow Windows Update to settle

Do not judge battery life, fan behavior, or idle temperatures while updates are still downloading, indexing, or compiling components. Let the update cycle finish, restart, wait a few minutes at the desktop, and then perform your hardware checks. If an update repeatedly fails, record its error and name before trying a different package.

Use the laptop maker’s official support route

After Windows Update, search the manufacturer’s official support site with the exact model or serial number, or open a support utility that the maker documents for that device. The support page is the authoritative place to identify model-specific chipset, storage, audio, network, hotkey, control-center, graphics, and firmware packages.

Manufacturer utilities are model-dependent

ASUS documents a MyASUS System Update feature for supported devices and directs owners to its support site when that feature is unavailable. This is an example of a supported route, not proof that every ASUS device—or every other manufacturer’s laptop—has the same utility or offers the same packages.

Read the package description and compatibility list. A support page can show many downloads because it serves several operating systems, panel options, processors, or regional variants. Install an item when it applies to your exact model or addresses a known need; do not treat the presence of a download button as an instruction to install everything.

What to capture before changing drivers

  • Take a screenshot or note of the current driver version for any device you plan to change.
  • Save the model-specific support page in your browser bookmarks.
  • Download only from the manufacturer’s official site or a documented Windows Update path. Microsoft specifically cautions against unofficial driver sites.
  • Read any required order, power, or restart instructions for a firmware package before starting it.

Inspect Device Manager and verify basic hardware

Device Manager is the fastest way to find a missing or malfunctioning device after the first update cycle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for warning signs

  1. Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand categories such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, Keyboards, Mice and other pointing devices, System devices, and Batteries.
  3. Look for a yellow warning icon, an Unknown device, or a category with a device missing from the expected list.
  4. Open a device’s Properties and read the status on the General tab. Record the error code if Windows reports one.

If a required driver is missing, try Windows Update first. If Windows cannot supply it, use the exact device or laptop manufacturer’s official site. Avoid driver-download aggregators and “driver booster” programs; they make it harder to verify the source and the correct model.

Perform a practical function check

This is a sensible owner’s check rather than a standardized Microsoft certification procedure. Test each item before making optional changes:

  • Wi-Fi: connect, browse several sites, and confirm that the connection survives a restart.
  • Audio: play system sound through the speakers and, if available, the headphone jack; check the input microphone separately.
  • Keyboard and touchpad: test every important key, the function-key shortcuts, clicking, scrolling, and gestures.
  • Display: check the native resolution, brightness keys, refresh-rate options, and an external monitor if you intend to use one.
  • Charging: verify that Windows reports “plugged in” and that the battery percentage changes while the adapter is connected.
  • Storage and ports: confirm that internal storage appears in File Explorer and test only the ports and peripherals you actually need.
  • Graphics switching: on a hybrid-graphics laptop, open an application that uses the discrete GPU and confirm that the expected adapter appears in Device Manager.

Choose graphics drivers with the laptop model in mind

A gaming laptop may contain integrated graphics in the processor plus a discrete GPU. The correct graphics package can depend on the exact panel, firmware, power-control system, and hybrid-graphics design—not just the GPU family name.

OEM and generic reference packages

MSI’s notebook guidance describes a trade-off between its validated OEM graphics packages and Intel or AMD reference drivers. MSI says Windows Update may replace a generic Intel or AMD package with MSI’s OEM package, and it describes the OEM version as validated for its notebook hardware. Reference packages can arrive more frequently with feature or game updates, but MSI says they are not guaranteed for every notebook model. Those statements are MSI’s guidance for MSI notebooks, not a universal rule for all manufacturers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Consideration Laptop-maker OEM package Intel/AMD reference package
Model validation and compatibility Validated by the laptop maker for particular notebook hardware, according to MSI’s notebook guidance. Designed for the reference GPU family; compatibility with a specific notebook is not guaranteed in MSI’s stated example.
Release cadence and features May arrive less often because it follows the maker’s validation process. May arrive more frequently with graphics features or game-related updates, according to MSI’s comparison.
Best first choice after setup Prefer it when the laptop maker specifies it for your exact model or when stability and notebook features matter most. Consider it when the GPU vendor documents support for your exact laptop and you need a particular fix or feature.
Recovery if a version causes trouble Keep the previous installer or use Device Manager’s rollback path. Use Device Manager’s rollback path or return to the model-specific package; do not layer several new versions at once.

AMD’s published installation procedure uses its Adrenalin software and, in the version documented on February 9, 2026, examples based on Adrenalin 26.1.1. Screens and choices can change, so follow the current official instructions for your GPU and operating system rather than treating that software version as permanent.

A practical graphics decision

  1. Keep the package installed by Windows or supplied on the model’s official support page while you establish that the display, sleep, brightness, external monitor, and games work.
  2. Check the laptop maker’s notes for your exact model before switching to a reference package.
  3. Change one graphics package at a time and restart.
  4. Test the applications that matter to you, including a game, an external display, and sleep/wake if those are important.
  5. If a new version introduces flicker, crashes, missing brightness control, or broken GPU switching, stop changing other drivers and use the rollback procedure.

Decide whether a BIOS or firmware update is justified

A BIOS update is not established as a universal first-day requirement. Treat it as a model-specific maintenance task: open the exact laptop model’s official support page, read the release notes and installation instructions, and update only when the release applies to your machine and provides a reason you need.

Reasons to consider the update

  • The manufacturer lists a security, stability, hardware-compatibility, or operating-system fix that matches your configuration.
  • The release is explicitly for your exact model or board revision.
  • The manufacturer’s instructions identify a prerequisite BIOS version or required utility that you can satisfy.

Prepare before starting

  • Connect the original AC adapter and do not interrupt power.
  • Close applications and disconnect unnecessary peripherals.
  • Read the maker’s warning about interruption, recovery, and whether the update must be performed from Windows, a firmware menu, or a bootable device.
  • Do not substitute a BIOS file for a visually similar model.

If the support page does not identify a relevant update, leave the current BIOS alone. “New” does not automatically mean “needs firmware replacement.”

What to do when an update causes a problem

When a fault begins immediately after a driver update, first identify the changed device and return to the previous known-good version before attempting unrelated fixes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Roll back a recent driver

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand the relevant category and double-click the affected device.
  3. Open the Driver tab.
  4. Select Roll Back Driver, choose a reason if Windows asks, and confirm.
  5. Restart and retest the function that failed.

Microsoft documents this rollback path and notes that reinstalling the previous driver often resolves an issue that began after Windows Update. The button can be unavailable when Windows has no previous package retained. In that case, use the exact model support page to obtain the earlier official package rather than downloading a random replacement.

Use a change log

Write down the package name, version, date, symptoms, and the time of the restart. This prevents repeatedly reinstalling the same problematic version and gives technical support enough information to distinguish a driver regression from a hardware fault.

Resolve conflicts between Windows Update, support utilities, and GPU software

Owners often ask whether Windows updates, a laptop support assistant, and NVIDIA, Intel, or AMD graphics updates should be installed first. The least disruptive answer is to establish a working baseline with Windows Update, restart, then use the laptop maker’s exact-model guidance. Add a graphics-vendor package only when its compatibility is documented or a specific problem requires it.

When two tools offer different versions

  • If Windows Update offers a recommended driver and the laptop utility offers a model-specific package, read both descriptions. Prefer the package the maker identifies for your exact model when notebook functions such as brightness, sleep, hotkeys, or GPU switching are involved.
  • If an optional update is offered without a problem to solve, defer it and test the current system first.
  • If a newer reference graphics driver is needed for a game or feature, create a recovery point using Windows’ available recovery tools if your edition provides one, record the current version, install only that graphics package, restart, and test.
  • Do not run multiple driver installers simultaneously or restart halfway through a firmware process.

First-week checks after setup

Some issues appear only after sleep, a battery cycle, or a longer game session. Recheck the system during normal use rather than continuously changing drivers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Install one representative game and confirm that the intended GPU is selected.
  • Test sleep and wake, lid close behavior, brightness control, and external-display switching.
  • Check that Wi-Fi reconnects after waking and that audio output returns to the expected device.
  • Observe charging behavior on AC power and battery drain during the tasks you actually perform.
  • Review Device Manager again if a peripheral, dock, headset, controller, or monitor adds a new device.

Keep installers and notes for versions that work. A known-good package is more useful than a vague memory that “the original driver was fine.”

Common mistakes to avoid

Installing every optional item

Optional drivers are selections, not obligations. Installing several at once removes your ability to identify which change helped or hurt.

Using unofficial driver sites

Driver files from unofficial sources can be mislabeled, outdated, or modified. Microsoft recommends obtaining manual drivers from the device manufacturer’s official site.

Assuming a desktop driver fits a notebook

Notebook power management, display routing, firmware, and thermal limits can require a package validated by the laptop maker. The GPU name alone does not prove compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Updating BIOS because the laptop is new

New ownership is not itself a BIOS-update reason. Check the exact model’s release notes and instructions first.

Changing several layers before testing

Do not update chipset, graphics, audio, network, BIOS, and control software in one session. Establish a baseline, make one change, restart when instructed, and test.

A compact decision checklist

Question Action
Is Windows still downloading normal updates? Let Windows Update finish, restart, and check again.
Is a device missing or showing a warning? Use Windows Update, then the exact device or laptop maker’s official support page.
Does everything work and an update is merely optional? Leave it unselected unless you have a documented reason to install it.
Does the graphics vendor offer a newer package? Check model compatibility and notebook guidance before replacing the current package.
Does the manufacturer list a BIOS update? Read the exact-model release notes; install only when applicable and justified.
Did a recent driver create a new fault? Use Device Manager’s Driver > Roll Back Driver path before making more changes.

Maintenance after the first setup

Windows Update remains the normal route for supported Windows updates. Revisit the laptop maker’s support page when you have a specific issue, when release notes address your hardware, or when the maker recommends a scheduled firmware or driver update. Keep Windows 11 current if the laptop supports it. For Windows 10, remember that Microsoft support ended on October 14, 2025; continuing to run it leaves you outside normal Microsoft support and should be an explicit compatibility decision rather than an accidental default.

The durable setup habit is simple: use official channels, identify the exact model, change one layer at a time, and preserve a rollback path. That approach gets a new gaming laptop ready for play without turning optional packages into unnecessary risk.
