The best first-day setup is a controlled sequence: finish Windows and manufacturer updates, plug in the supplied charger, choose an appropriate performance profile, confirm demanding games use the discrete GPU, remove only the background work you recognize, and then tune each game one setting at a time. This improves consistency without pretending that one switch can raise frame rates in every game. Your laptop’s firmware, cooling design, graphics switching, display, and utility features determine which options are available.

Start with a known-good baseline

Before changing performance settings, record the exact laptop model, Windows edition, processor, graphics processors, installed memory, storage capacity, and display refresh-rate capability. Keep the model number available because firmware, graphics-switching controls, fan profiles, and supported memory or storage options are not universal across a product family.

Use a supported, fully updated operating system. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so a new setup in 2026 should use a supported Windows release and confirm that the laptop meets its eligibility requirements. If the machine shipped with an older image, do not assume the factory image is current.

  • Keep the supplied AC adapter and any manufacturer-specific power cable nearby; high-performance modes may require the adapter.
  • Place the laptop on a hard, level surface while testing. A bed, blanket, or soft lap surface can obstruct intake or exhaust openings.
  • Make a note of the factory behavior before changing several options. If a later change causes instability, you will have a reference configuration to restore.

1. Complete Windows and manufacturer updates

Updates are the first performance step because they can include operating-system fixes, device drivers, compatibility corrections, and performance improvements. Microsoft’s PC-performance guidance recommends completing Windows Update and reviewing available updates rather than running an unpatched installation.

  • Ultra-Quiet Fans: Three ultra-quiet fans create a noise-free environment for you
  • Extra Usb Ports: Extra USB port and power switch design allows for connecting more USB devices. Warm Tips: The packaged cable is USB to USB connection. Type C connection devices need to prepare an Type C to USB adapter
  1. Finish initial Windows setup. Let the first sign-in, device detection, and restart cycles complete. Keep the laptop connected to AC power if an update is lengthy.
  2. Run Windows Update. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install the offered updates, and restart when Windows requests it. Check again after the restart; a second pass can appear after servicing components are updated.
  3. Review optional updates. In the Windows Update area, inspect optional driver updates when they are offered. Install only drivers that match the hardware and a clear need; do not treat every optional item as mandatory.
  4. Use the laptop maker’s official support utility or exact model support page. Install model-specific chipset, graphics, audio, network, and control-utility packages from the manufacturer’s own channel. The utility may also identify firmware updates and supported versions.
  5. Read the instructions before any BIOS or firmware update. Firmware procedures, prerequisites, power requirements, and recovery behavior differ by model. Use the manufacturer’s documented process for your exact model, keep AC power connected, and do not interrupt the update. There is no safe universal BIOS-update recipe.

Do not use third-party driver sites or generic driver packs merely because they promise a newer version. A driver that is newer in date can still be wrong for the laptop’s firmware, display routing, or power management. If an official utility reports that a component is current, leave it alone unless a game or support bulletin identifies a specific problem.

2. Choose a power mode with the trade-off in view

For demanding gaming, connect the supplied AC adapter before launching the game. ASUS support documentation specifically recommends AC power to provide sufficient performance and keep the CPU and GPU at high-frequency status during play. Battery operation can impose a lower power envelope, shorten runtime quickly, and change fan behavior.

In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery and choose a power mode. Microsoft describes Best performance as maximizing performance while using more power; its guidance also warns that higher performance can increase battery drain and operating temperature. Balanced is the compromise for ordinary work and quieter, cooler use.

Profile Use it when What to expect Important limitation
Balanced Web work, school, light games, or mixed unplugged use A balance between responsiveness, battery use, and heat May not sustain the highest CPU/GPU clocks in a demanding game
Best performance Plugged-in play when Windows is controlling the main power policy More performance headroom, with greater power use and potentially higher temperature The label and available modes depend on the Windows edition and device firmware
Manufacturer performance profile When the laptop’s official utility exposes fan and CPU/GPU controls May alter power limits, fan curves, cooling behavior, and performance together Names and capabilities are model-specific; check the exact manual

Many gaming laptops add profiles in an OEM utility. ASUS Armoury Crate, for example, documents Silent, Performance, and Turbo modes on supported systems. Turbo is restricted to AC operation on those systems. Other manufacturers use different names, omit some profiles, or tie them to a particular GPU-switching mode. Select the least aggressive profile that meets your needs: a maximum profile can produce more fan noise and heat without improving a game that is limited by another component.

3. Make sure each game uses the intended GPU

A gaming laptop may contain an integrated GPU in the processor and a discrete GPU. Hybrid graphics can save battery power, but a game assigned to the integrated GPU may perform below expectations. If your model provides a choice, assign demanding games to the discrete GPU.

  1. Open Windows Settings and go to the Graphics section under System > Display.
  2. Add the game executable if it is not listed. Use the actual executable selected by the game launcher, not an unrelated launcher process.
  3. Open the game’s Options entry, choose High performance or the discrete-GPU option shown by Windows, and save.
  4. Restart the game. A running process generally will not change GPUs until it is closed and launched again.

Check Windows’ per-application setting even if you also configured the graphics vendor’s control panel. ASUS notes that Windows graphics preferences can have higher priority than vendor-control-panel preferences. If the two disagree, the Windows assignment may win.

Some models offer a MUX switch or a discrete-only graphics mode in the manufacturer utility or firmware. Such a mode can route the display directly through the discrete GPU, but availability and behavior vary. It can increase battery use and may affect external-display routing, sleep behavior, or the need to restart. Do not enable a discrete-only mode universally; use it only when your model documents it and the battery trade-off is acceptable.

To verify the result, launch the game and observe GPU activity in Task Manager or the manufacturer utility while standing in the same game scene. A high GPU percentage alone does not prove that the fastest GPU is selected, so confirm the device name shown for the game when the software provides it.

4. Reduce avoidable background activity

Background programs consume processor time, memory, storage bandwidth, network capacity, or battery. Microsoft recommends inspecting startup applications and resource use rather than applying a blanket “debloat” script.

Review startup applications

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps and sort by the reported startup impact.
  3. Disable only programs you recognize and do not need to start with Windows, such as a launcher or updater you prefer to open manually.
  4. Leave security software, touchpad or hotkey components, audio controls, graphics drivers, and other hardware services enabled unless the manufacturer explicitly says otherwise.

Disabling an item prevents automatic startup; it does not uninstall the program. If a game launcher needs to update before play, open it manually and allow its update to finish instead of disabling every updater indiscriminately.

Find heavy processes before a game session

In Task Manager’s Processes view, sort by CPU, Memory, Disk, or Network and identify the process responsible for unusual activity. Close an unneeded browser window, synchronization job, video encoder, or installer that you recognize. Do not terminate an unfamiliar system process simply because it appears near the top of a sorted list. Search the process name through the laptop maker’s documentation or the software’s own help before acting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove software you no longer use through Windows’ installed-app controls, but keep recovery tools and hardware utilities that your model requires. Paid “optimizer” or cleaning software is not a prerequisite for gaming performance, and blanket security-feature disabling can create more risk than benefit.

Manage storage sensibly

Keep reasonable free space on the system drive and the drive holding your games. Microsoft includes storage cleanup in its performance guidance because a nearly full drive can interfere with updates and normal system work. Freeing space is maintenance, not a guaranteed frame-rate increase. Routine SSD “defragmenting” should not be presented as a universal gaming-FPS trick; use the storage maintenance Windows provides for the drive type.

5. Set the display and game options deliberately

Start with the game’s default settings, then change one demanding option at a time. ASUS’s gaming guidance identifies lowering resolution as one way to raise frame rate, but the effect depends on the game, GPU, display, and selected effects. No universal FPS gain can be promised.

Use a repeatable tuning order

  1. Confirm the display mode. Use a resolution the panel supports. If the game offers exclusive full-screen, borderless, or windowed modes, compare them in the same scene rather than assuming one is faster on every laptop.
  2. Check the in-game resolution scale. Lowering output resolution or render scale reduces the number of pixels the GPU must process, at the cost of image detail. Make a small change and inspect text, edges, and distant objects.
  3. Reduce the largest visual workloads first. Test options such as ray-traced effects, shadows, reflections, volumetric lighting, view distance, and anti-aliasing individually. The expensive setting differs by game, so change one control and measure before changing another.
  4. Set a frame-rate cap when appropriate. A cap can align rendering with the display and reduce unnecessary heat or fan activity when the GPU is producing more frames than the panel can show. Choose a value the game and display can sustain; there is no single correct number for every panel.
  5. Select a supported refresh rate. In Windows or the game’s display settings, use a refresh rate the laptop panel and current graphics mode support. Exact labels and available rates vary by model, display connection, and GPU-routing mode.

Compare changes in the same level, camera position, or built-in scene. Record whether the problem is low average frame rate, uneven frame pacing, input delay, or image-quality loss. A setting that raises a counter but introduces stutter or makes the game unreadable is not an improvement.

  • 3-PORT USB TYPE A HUB — From webcams to controllers to drawing tablets, plug in more devices to the laptop without solely relying on its native USB ports

6. Keep the cooling setup model-aware

Performance profiles can change cooling as well as CPU and GPU power. ASUS documents that its supported profiles adjust performance and cooling together, so a more aggressive profile may also mean louder fans and higher surface temperatures.

  • Keep every intake and exhaust opening unobstructed. Follow the manufacturer’s spacing guidance for the chassis.
  • Do not place the laptop on bedding, carpet, or a soft cushion while gaming.
  • Use the OEM utility’s temperature and fan indicators when available, and treat a sudden change from the laptop’s normal behavior as a troubleshooting signal.
  • Expect fan noise in a high-performance profile. Quiet operation and maximum sustained clocks are competing goals.

An adjustable stand or cooling pad is optional. Match its dimensions, support points, fan position, and airflow direction to the laptop’s chassis and vent layout. The official guidance reviewed for this setup does not establish a universal temperature reduction or FPS increase from third-party cooling pads, so buy one for a specific airflow or ergonomic need rather than a guaranteed performance result.

7. Validate changes instead of guessing

Use a simple before-and-after process so that a change can be kept or reversed on evidence.

  1. Choose one representative game scene or repeatable benchmark built into the game.
  2. Play it with the original configuration for several minutes and note frame rate, visible stutter, fan noise, and temperature readings available from the laptop utility.
  3. Change one setting, restart the game if required, and repeat the same scene for the same approximate duration.
  4. Keep the change only if it improves the symptom you care about without unacceptable image-quality loss, heat, noise, or battery cost.
  5. Record the final Windows power mode, OEM profile, GPU assignment, resolution, refresh rate, and frame cap. This makes future driver or game updates easier to troubleshoot.

This method avoids attributing a change to a tweak when an update, background process, game patch, or different scene actually caused the result. It also respects the fact that performance varies by title; a setting that helps a graphics-heavy game may do little for a CPU-limited simulation.

Troubleshoot the symptom you actually have

The game has unexpectedly low frame rates

  • Connect AC power and confirm that Windows is not in a battery-saving mode.
  • Check the game’s Windows Graphics assignment and verify that the discrete GPU is selected where supported.
  • Confirm the OEM utility is not using a silent or battery profile during play.
  • Close recognized CPU-, disk-, or network-heavy background processes.
  • Lower one demanding in-game option or the resolution, then retest the same scene.

If performance remains low after these checks, compare the result with the game’s published system requirements and the laptop’s hardware. A newer driver or higher power mode cannot make a game exceed a hardware limit.

Frame rates look acceptable but the game stutters

  • Repeat the test after background downloads, cloud synchronization, and shader or game updates finish.
  • Watch for disk or memory spikes in Task Manager during the hitch.
  • Try a frame cap that the system can sustain instead of allowing large swings.
  • Change one graphics option at a time; a single streaming, shadow, or effects setting can cause intermittent stalls.

The laptop becomes hot or loud

  • Check that vents are clear and the laptop is on a hard surface.
  • Compare Balanced or the manufacturer’s standard performance profile with the most aggressive mode.
  • Accept that higher sustained clocks can require more fan noise and heat; do not chase a maximum profile if the game is already smooth.
  • If temperatures, shutdowns, or fan behavior are outside the manufacturer’s documented range, stop stressing the system and contact the manufacturer’s support channel.

The game uses the integrated GPU

Recheck the Windows per-app Graphics setting, close and relaunch the game, and then inspect the running process again. Vendor control-panel settings alone may not win if Windows has a higher-priority assignment. If your model has a documented MUX or discrete-only option, review its battery and display-routing consequences before enabling it.

A driver or firmware update introduced a problem

Record the update name, version, date, and symptom. Re-read the exact model’s release notes and recovery instructions, and use the manufacturer’s support process for a supported fix or rollback. Do not interrupt firmware operations or install a random package from a third-party site.

A practical maintenance routine

After the initial setup, keep the process small and repeatable:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Run Windows Update and check the manufacturer’s official support utility periodically.
  • Review startup apps after installing launchers, overlays, or creative software.
  • Keep enough storage for Windows and game updates.
  • Recheck the selected GPU and power profile after a major Windows, driver, BIOS, or game update.
  • Clean around vents according to the manufacturer’s instructions without opening the chassis unless the warranty and service documentation allow it.
  • Use the same test scene when evaluating a new profile, accessory, or graphics setting.

The right setup is the one that delivers the desired responsiveness within the laptop’s documented thermal, power, and display limits. Maximum performance, minimum noise, long battery life, and the highest image quality cannot all be guaranteed at once; choose the trade-off for the way you actually play.
