Set up a new gaming laptop in this order: finish Windows first-run setup while connected to the internet, run Windows Update until no important updates remain, inspect Device Manager, install model-specific packages from the laptop maker, then install graphics software that matches the actual GPU and Windows version. Treat BIOS updates and optional drivers as model-specific decisions—not automatic first-day tasks.
Before you begin
Keep the laptop connected to AC power during setup and firmware work. Have the exact model or product number available; a family name such as “15-inch gaming laptop” is not precise enough for firmware or drivers. You can usually find the identifier on the chassis label, in the purchase record, or in Windows System Information.
- A reliable internet connection, preferably the laptop’s normal Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection.
- Your Microsoft account details, if you plan to use one.
- A second internet-connected device only if the new laptop cannot load its network adapter driver.
- The manufacturer’s official support page for the exact model.
Do not start by downloading a third-party driver updater or by flashing the BIOS. Windows and the laptop manufacturer provide safer ways to establish a known-good baseline.
1. Complete Windows first-run setup
Connect to the internet
Follow the on-screen prompts for region, keyboard layout, network, account, and privacy choices. Microsoft says internet access during setup helps Windows deliver current features, security updates, and drivers. Internet access is required to finish setup on Windows Home and Pro editions.

If the Wi-Fi adapter is not recognized, connect temporarily by Ethernet if the laptop supports it. Otherwise, use another device to download the network adapter driver from the laptop maker’s official support site, copy it to a USB drive, and run it on the new laptop. Use the exact model and Windows edition when selecting the package.
Record the choices that affect later troubleshooting
Note the Windows edition and version, the device name, and whether the laptop uses integrated graphics, discrete graphics, or both. This information determines which packages are appropriate later. Privacy prompts can be reviewed again in Windows settings, so do not postpone setup indefinitely because you are uncertain about one optional setting.
2. Bring Windows fully up to date
Install regular updates
- Open Settings and select Windows Update (on some Windows 10 installations, select Update & Security, then Windows Update).
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available quality, security, and feature updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again. Repeat until another check finds no important pending update.
Several restart-and-check cycles are normal on a newly provisioned machine. Windows Update installs recommended hardware drivers automatically. It can also expose an Optional updates area containing driver packages that require manual selection.
Handle optional driver updates deliberately
Do not assume every item under Optional updates must be installed. Read the device name and version, then compare it with the laptop manufacturer’s package and any model-specific instructions. An optional package may be newer, may address a particular fault, or may simply be unnecessary for your configuration. Install it when it solves a known problem or when the manufacturer directs you to do so; otherwise, keep a note of it and establish whether the current driver is functioning first.
3. Check Device Manager for missing hardware
After Windows Update and its restarts, inspect the hardware list.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Network adapters, Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and System devices.
- Look for a yellow warning icon, an Unknown device, or a device that is absent even though the laptop includes that hardware.
- Open a suspect device’s Properties and read the status message on the General tab.
A missing device after Windows Update is a reason to consult the laptop maker’s support page, not to use a random download site. Microsoft advises obtaining drivers from the hardware manufacturer’s official site when Windows cannot find a suitable compatible package and advises against other driver-download sites.
When Device Manager shows an error
- Unknown device: identify it from the device’s hardware IDs or the model’s support list, then install the matching official package.
- Code 28 or no driver: obtain the package for that exact model and Windows version; do not substitute a package for a similar-looking laptop.
- Code 10 or repeated start failure: restart once after updating, then check the manufacturer’s firmware and driver notes before changing several packages at once.
- Graphics adapter missing: install the laptop maker’s chipset and graphics packages in the order it specifies, then recheck Display adapters.
4. Use the laptop manufacturer’s model page
Once Windows has a working connection, open the manufacturer’s official support page and search by the full model or product number. Review all listed categories, including chipset, storage, network, audio, touchpad, hotkeys, graphics, firmware, and utilities. The manufacturer’s validated package can contain laptop-specific power, keyboard, thermal, or device-control components that a generic component package does not include.
Why one universal driver order does not exist
Vendor instructions differ by model. MSI publishes notebook driver-order guidance, while Intel’s documentation gives a BIOS prerequisite for a particular laptop kit. Those examples show why you should follow the instructions attached to your machine rather than applying a universal sequence to every gaming laptop.
| Instruction you encounter | How to interpret it | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Required prerequisite | The package must be installed before a stated upgrade or feature. | Complete it first, using the exact model and version named. |
| Recommended order | The maker has tested a sequence for its notebook hardware. | Follow that sequence instead of rearranging packages. |
| Optional newer release | The update is available but not identified as necessary. | Install only when it addresses a problem or a documented need. |
| Generic component-vendor package | The package targets a GPU, chipset, or adapter family. | Confirm that the laptop’s hardware and Windows version are supported. |
5. Install graphics software that matches the laptop
Identify the graphics arrangement
Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters. A gaming laptop may list integrated Intel graphics, a discrete GPU, or both. The laptop maker may also provide a validated graphics package that coordinates switching between those adapters. Record the exact adapter names before downloading anything.
Choose the correct package
Start with the laptop manufacturer’s graphics driver when it provides one for your model. If you use a component-vendor package, use only the vendor’s official support guidance and verify the operating-system requirements. Graphics software is not interchangeable: installing AMD software on a laptop without supported Radeon hardware is inappropriate, and a package for a different Windows release may fail or install incomplete components.

AMD compatibility example
AMD’s cited Adrenalin installation guidance describes Adrenalin 26.1.1 and an RX 9070 example. That page lists Windows 11 version 21H2 and later, and Windows 10 64-bit version 1809 and later, for compatible Radeon systems. These are version-sensitive requirements, not a universal recommendation for every gaming laptop. Check the current compatibility list and the actual GPU before proceeding.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Restart and verify
Restart after installing a graphics package if the installer requests it. Return to Device Manager and confirm that the intended adapter appears without a warning icon. Open the graphics control application only after the driver is correctly installed; its features and labels depend on the hardware and package version.
6. Decide whether a BIOS update is warranted
A BIOS update is maintenance, not a mandatory first-day ritual. Check the exact model’s firmware page for a documented fix, security requirement, hardware compatibility note, or upgrade prerequisite. Keep the charger connected, close other applications, and follow the manufacturer’s interruption warnings exactly.
The Intel NUC M15 exception
Intel’s guidance for the NUC M15 Laptop Kit (LAPBCx10) says the system should be at BIOS 0071 or newer before a Windows 11 upgrade. That requirement applies to the named product; it does not establish a minimum BIOS version for other gaming laptops.
When to postpone firmware work
- The laptop is stable and the manufacturer lists no relevant fix or prerequisite.
- You have not confirmed the exact product number or regional model.
- The battery is low, the power connection is unreliable, or the update instructions are unclear.
- You are considering the update solely because a forum recommends that everyone flash the newest BIOS.
7. Set essential Windows options for gaming
These settings are safe to review after updates and drivers are working. Names can vary between Windows 10 and Windows 11 and between manufacturer utilities.
Recommended Free Tools
Power and plugged-in behavior
Open Settings > System > Power & battery and review the power mode for plugged-in use. Select a performance-oriented mode only when you are connected to AC power and accept higher heat, fan noise, and energy use. Keep a balanced mode available for travel and general work. Do not judge gaming performance until Windows has completed pending updates and the correct graphics driver is installed.
Display refresh rate
Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and confirm that the panel is using its intended refresh rate. A high-refresh panel can remain at a lower default value after setup. Choose a rate that the display and current graphics configuration actually support; a higher value can increase power consumption.
Game-related Windows settings
Review Settings > Gaming and the available Game Mode and capture options. Game Mode can be left enabled for gaming-focused use, while automatic recording and background capture can be disabled if you do not use them. These choices change background behavior, not the capabilities of the GPU, and they should not be presented as a guaranteed frame-rate increase.
Storage and restore basics
Open Settings > System > Storage to see how much space Windows and recovery files consume before installing large games. Keep enough free space for updates and temporary files. If your edition and configuration support restore points, create one after the baseline drivers are working and before a major driver or firmware change. A restore point is not a substitute for a personal backup.

- Complete Windows setup with internet access.
- Run Windows Update, restart, and check again.
- Install any missing network or chipset package needed for proper hardware detection.
- Install the laptop maker’s remaining device packages, restarting when requested.
- Install the appropriate graphics package for the detected hardware and Windows version.
- Review optional driver updates and install only those with a clear purpose.
- Recheck Device Manager and test sleep, audio, Wi-Fi, display switching, keyboard controls, and charging.
- Review BIOS notes and update firmware only if the model’s instructions or a relevant requirement calls for it.
This is a fallback sequence, not a replacement for a model-specific order. If the manufacturer says its chipset, graphics, or firmware package must come first, follow that instruction instead.
9. Troubleshoot common first-day problems
No internet during setup
Try Ethernet, restart the router connection, or obtain the network adapter driver from the official laptop support page using another device. Once online, run Windows Update and restart before installing additional packages.
Windows Update keeps offering the same driver
Record the device name and version, restart, and check Device Manager for an error. Compare the offered package with the laptop maker’s current package. If the device works and the optional item is not required, do not repeatedly install it merely to make the list disappear.

Confirm that both adapters appear in Device Manager and that neither has a warning icon. Review the laptop’s graphics-switching utility and Windows graphics preferences. Install the manufacturer-validated package if the discrete adapter is missing or switching controls do not work.
The display is limited to a low refresh rate
Check the cable or dock if an external display is involved, then revisit Advanced display after the graphics driver installation. A panel or connection may not support every advertised rate in every mode.
A BIOS update fails or will not start
Stop and read the exact model instructions rather than trying a different firmware file. Confirm the product number, AC connection, file format, and required preparation steps. If the laptop is still usable, contact the manufacturer’s support channel before attempting another flash.
10. How to resolve conflicting driver advice
When two instructions disagree, compare five facts before choosing:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- The exact laptop model and hardware revision.
- The installed Windows version and edition.
- The component vendor and whether graphics are integrated, discrete, or switchable.
- Whether the package comes from Microsoft, the laptop maker, or the component vendor.
- Whether the instruction describes a required prerequisite, a tested order, or an optional release.
An instruction for a different model, Windows release, or graphics arrangement is not evidence that it applies to your machine. The official model page should outrank a generic list when the two conflict.
11. Final verification checklist
- Windows setup completed with a working network connection.
- Windows Update has been checked again after the latest restart.
- Device Manager has no unexplained warning icons or unknown devices.
- The exact model page has been reviewed for drivers, firmware, and utilities.
- The graphics package matches the installed GPU and Windows version.
- The display refresh rate and plugged-in power mode are intentional.
- Wi-Fi, audio, sleep/wake, charging, keyboard controls, and graphics switching have been tested.
- Any BIOS update has a model-specific reason and follows the manufacturer’s instructions.
A clean Windows reinstall is not required simply because the laptop is new. Establish the supplied installation as a stable baseline first; reinstall only for a specific recovery or configuration reason.
