The reliable way to set up a gaming headset is to identify its exact model and supported connection first, then connect it, choose it for both playback and microphone input, remove any mute or volume problems, and test voice chat in the game or app. A 3.5 mm headset, USB headset, USB wireless-transceiver headset, and console-specific wireless headset do not follow the same procedure.
Start with compatibility and the connection method
Read the headset manual or model page before plugging anything in. The same label—such as wireless or USB—can describe very different hardware. A wireless headset may use a USB transceiver that must be switched between PC and PS5 modes; another may use a console-specific wireless protocol. A cable may carry stereo sound but not microphone input unless the headset, plug, controller, and console all support it.
Before starting, note the exact headset model, the platform you want to use, whether the battery is charged, and which accessories came in the box. Keep the original cable and transceiver together: a transceiver from a different model is not automatically interchangeable. If the headset has a PC, PS5, or Xbox switch, set it only after confirming the position specified by the manual. This short check prevents a common failure in which every plug is connected correctly but the device is operating in the wrong mode.
| Connection type | What you normally connect | Checks that matter |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5 mm analog | Headset plug to a PC jack or controller | Confirm the jack and cable support microphone input, not only headphone output. On a controller, make sure the plug is fully seated. |
| USB wired | Headset USB plug to the computer or console | Use a port and platform listed by the manufacturer. The operating system may expose separate game and chat devices. |
| USB wireless transceiver | Transceiver to the computer or console, then headset power | Set the transceiver’s platform switch correctly, keep the headset charged, and follow the model’s pairing procedure. |
| Platform-specific wireless | The headset’s supported console wireless system or adapter | Compatibility is model- and console-specific. Do not assume that a wireless headset works on every Xbox or PlayStation model. |
| Bluetooth or other listed wireless option | A compatible console, adapter, or computer | Use it only when the headset manual and the platform explicitly support that combination; a Bluetooth label alone is not a compatibility guarantee. |
Write down the exact model, whether it has a PC/PS5/Xbox mode switch, whether it uses a removable transceiver, and whether its microphone works over the connection you plan to use. Those details determine the rest of the setup.

Set up the headset on a Windows PC
1. Connect it in the mode specified by the manufacturer
For a wired 3.5 mm model, connect the plug to the computer’s headset jack or the appropriate audio connection. For USB, connect the headset directly as instructed and allow Windows to detect it. For a USB wireless model, plug in its transceiver, set the transceiver to PC if it has a mode switch, and turn on the headset.
Sony’s INZONE H5 instructions illustrate why the order matters: the transceiver is set to PC, connected directly to the computer, and the headset is then powered on. That sequence is specific to that model, so use your own manual’s sequence when it differs.
When a guide says to connect the transceiver directly, avoid inserting an unapproved hub or adapter during the initial setup. Establish a working connection in the manufacturer’s recommended arrangement first; only then troubleshoot alternate ports or accessories. Keep the headset within the distance recommended by its guide while pairing. Sony’s H5 preparation instructions use a within-1 m (3.2 ft) proximity for that model, which is setup guidance rather than a universal wireless range.
2. Choose playback and recording devices in Windows
- Open Windows Sound Settings.
- Under the output or playback device selector, choose the headset for game audio.
- Under the input or recording device selector, choose the headset microphone.
- Raise the Windows output volume and check the headset’s physical volume control.
Some gaming headsets create separate devices for game and chat audio. In that situation, use the device names deliberately rather than selecting the first item that contains the headset name. The Arctis Pro setup documentation, for example, uses Arctis Pro Game Audio for playback and Arctis Pro Chat for recording and voice applications. Sony’s H5 documentation similarly distinguishes Game and Chat device names. Your model may use different names.
Check both selectors even if Windows appears to recognize the headset automatically. A newly connected device can be available without being the active output or input. If you change devices while a game is open, the game may continue using its previous choice; close and reopen it if the new headset does not appear or audio stays on the speakers.
3. Set the game or chat app separately
Many PC games and voice applications have their own input and output menus. Open those menus and select the same intended playback and microphone devices, or select the application’s system-default option when you have deliberately configured Windows defaults. If the app was already running while you connected the headset, close and reopen it so it can enumerate the new devices.
Microphone access can also be blocked by Windows privacy controls or by an application’s own permission setting. Bungie’s Destiny 2 audio guidance is an example of an app-specific permission check; treat that as a game example, not as a universal menu path for every Windows program. If a voice app shows no microphone signal, verify its microphone permission before changing hardware.
Keep the game’s chat channel in mind. Team, party, proximity, and other channels can have separate controls, so hearing game audio does not prove that voice chat is enabled. Test the channel you actually plan to use rather than relying only on a Windows microphone test.
4. Test before launching a match
Speak while watching the app’s input meter or use its microphone test. Confirm that you can hear system audio and that the meter responds to your voice. Remove mute at three points: the headset’s physical button or boom, the Windows or app control, and any in-game voice-chat control. A working microphone in Windows does not prove that a particular game has enabled the correct chat channel.
Ask another participant whether your voice is understandable, if a party test is available. If they hear silence, repeat the input-device check; if they hear distortion, lower the headset or microphone level before changing the connection. Keep game and chat volume controls distinct when the headset provides separate Game and Chat devices.

5. Deal with wireless pairing and interference
If a USB wireless headset is silent or does not appear, verify that the transceiver is in PC mode and connected directly as the manufacturer requires. Follow the model’s re-pairing instructions rather than applying a sequence from another headset. Sony notes that nearby 2.4 GHz devices can interfere with the INZONE H5 connection; moving competing wireless equipment away can help with that model. Do not treat that observation as a universal range or interference specification.

1. Use a connection supported by both devices
Check the headset’s PlayStation 5 compatibility before connecting it. For the INZONE H5, Sony instructs you to set the USB transceiver switch to PS5, connect it to the console, and power on the headset. The guide recommends the PS5’s front USB port for that transceiver. That port recommendation and switch position apply to the H5 procedure, not to every USB headset.
PlayStation Support cautions that not all devices work with the console. If the headset is not recognized, return to the headset maker’s compatibility instructions instead of assuming the console or headset is defective.
2. Select output in the PS5 sound menu
- Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Under Output Device, select the connected headset.
- Check Output to Headphones and choose the audio you want routed to the headset.
- Play a system sound or game and adjust the console and headset volume controls.
The available output choices can depend on the connected device and the current audio configuration. If the headset is listed but you hear nothing, check its mute and volume controls before changing another setting.
If output remains on the television, return to Output Device rather than changing unrelated audio options. A headset can be detected while the console still routes sound elsewhere. Also check any physical game/chat balance wheel on the headset; moving it fully toward chat can make game audio seem absent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3. Select and level the microphone
- Press the PS button to open the control center.
- Open Mic and select the headset under Input Device.
- Speak while adjusting Microphone Level until the meter reaches the Good range.
- Check the headset’s mute switch and the console’s mic-status indicator.
If friends cannot hear you, the input selector and mute state are the first checks. A headset can deliver game audio correctly while the console is still using its controller microphone or another input.
Run this meter check with the boom in its normal playing position. If the level is too low, first verify that the boom is fully extended and unmuted, then adjust the level. Do not assume that changing output volume will increase microphone level; they are separate controls.
Set up the headset on Xbox
1. Confirm Xbox support for the exact model
Xbox connection methods are not interchangeable across headsets or console generations. Read the model’s Xbox instructions first. SteelSeries documents one example in which an Arctis Pro connects to an Xbox controller with the included 3.5 mm cable. That is an example for that product, not a rule that every Xbox headset should use a controller cable.
Xbox product information describes several possible headset routes, including a controller’s 3.5 mm jack, USB-C, Bluetooth-compatible devices, and the Windows wireless adapter. Those options describe supported Xbox equipment and should not be assumed to certify an unrelated third-party headset. The headset manual must explicitly support the Xbox console you own.
Do not infer compatibility from the connector alone. Two headsets can use USB-C while requiring different software, adapters, or console support. Likewise, a headset advertised as Bluetooth may not support the Xbox combination you want. The model’s Xbox listing and instructions are the deciding evidence.

2. Connect and check the physical controls
Connect the cable, USB device, or supported wireless adapter exactly as specified. Turn on the headset if it has a power switch. Raise the headset volume and make sure its microphone is not muted. With a wired headset, a cable may fit the controller yet fail to carry microphone input if the cable, plug wiring, or controller connection does not support it.
Seat a 3.5 mm plug fully; partial insertion can produce sound in one direction or intermittent chat. If the headset uses a detachable boom, check that it is inserted in the correct socket. These are physical checks, not Xbox menu settings, and should be completed before replacing the headset.
3. Check Xbox audio and mixer controls
Xbox provides headset controls in its audio and music area. Open that area after the headset is connected and check the available volume, balance, and mute controls. The exact menu labels and controls can vary with the Xbox model, accessory, and software version, so follow what the console displays rather than relying on a menu path from a different device.

4. Test party and game chat
Join an Xbox party or open the game’s voice-chat test. Confirm that you can hear other players and that your microphone indicator reacts when you speak. If game sound works but chat does not, inspect the game’s chat channel and the Xbox mixer separately; they are different layers of the setup.
Get game audio and voice chat working together
A headset setup has at least three independent choices: the platform’s output device, the platform’s input device, and the game’s own voice-chat configuration. A fourth choice can exist on PC when the headset exposes separate Game and Chat devices.
- Game audio: verify the platform output device and the game’s master volume.
- Microphone input: verify the selected input device, physical mute, and microphone level.
- Chat channel: check whether the game is using party, team, proximity, or another channel.
- Application permission: on PC, confirm that Windows and the app are allowed to use the microphone.
Destiny 2 is a useful example of why game settings must be treated as game-specific: its audio guidance includes in-game chat options and permission troubleshooting. Do not present those labels as universal PlayStation, Xbox, or Windows settings. For another game, open its own audio and voice menus and select the channel and input/output devices it exposes.

Fix the most common setup failures
- No power or sound: charge or power the headset, reconnect the cable or transceiver firmly, and raise both the platform and headset volume.
- Wrong connection mode: confirm that the headset’s mode switch matches the platform. A transceiver set to PS5 will not necessarily operate as a PC device, and vice versa.
- Headset not recognized: check model compatibility, use the connection required by the manual, and reconnect the device. On PS5, remember that PlayStation says not all devices work with the console.
- Game audio comes from speakers: select the headset as the platform output. On Windows, recheck Sound Settings; on PS5, use Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Microphone is silent: unmute the headset, select the correct input, raise the microphone level, and confirm the game or app has microphone permission on PC.
- Friends hear nothing but you hear them: inspect the outgoing input device and chat channel. A correct output selection does not automatically select the microphone.
- Wired microphone fails on Xbox: verify that the cable and controller connection carry microphone input and that the headset supports that Xbox model. A plug that delivers headphones alone is not sufficient.
- Wireless pairing fails: use the manufacturer’s exact re-pairing procedure. For the INZONE H5, Sony describes holding the transceiver connect button and the headset power button for about five seconds; that button sequence is not universal.
- Wireless audio is noisy: check for nearby 2.4 GHz interference when using a model that relies on that band, and follow the maker’s placement and reconnection guidance.
- Only one side of the headset works: reseat the plug or detachable cable and verify that the connection is fully inserted. If the microphone also fails, check whether the cable is an audio-only lead rather than a headset cable.
- Chat works in a system test but not in a game: open the game’s input, output, and channel controls and confirm that the game has permission to use the microphone on PC.
When you need an adapter, cable, or replacement headset
Do not choose an accessory based only on the words USB or wireless. Compare the complete connection path:
| Question | Why it determines compatibility |
|---|---|
| Does the headset support the platform and exact console or PC connection? | A physically compatible plug or transceiver can still be unsupported by the software or console. |
| Does the chosen connection carry microphone input? | Some cables or adapters provide headphone audio without a usable microphone path. |
| Does the headset create separate game and chat devices? | On PC, you may need to assign different playback and recording devices in Windows and in the voice app. |
| Is a model-specific adapter or transceiver required? | Platform switches, pairing controls, and wireless protocols are not interchangeable between models. |
| Can the console expose the controls you need? | Xbox and PS5 menus and available settings vary with the connected accessory. |
If the answer to any of these questions is unknown, stop and consult the exact headset manual before buying an adapter. An adapter cannot turn an unsupported wireless protocol into a supported one. Check microphone support specifically: an accessory that solves playback may still leave voice chat unavailable.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I connect my gaming headset to my PC?
Identify whether it is 3.5 mm, USB, or USB-wireless, then follow the model guide. For a wireless transceiver with a mode switch, select PC, connect it as instructed, and power on the headset. In Windows Sound Settings, select the headset for playback and its microphone for recording, then repeat those choices in the game or voice app if it has separate menus.

Why can’t my PS5 hear my headset mic?
Press the PS button, open Mic, select the headset under Input Device, and adjust Microphone Level while speaking until the meter reaches Good. Check the headset’s mute control and the console mic indicator. Also verify that the headset is compatible with PS5; PlayStation says not all devices work with the console.
How do I get game audio and chat through my headset?
Set the platform output to the headset, set the microphone input to the headset, and then check the game’s own voice-chat channel and volume. On PC, a headset may expose separate Game and Chat devices, so assign the intended playback and recording devices in Windows and the chat app.
Will this headset work with Xbox?
Only if the exact model supports your Xbox console and the connection you plan to use. Xbox lists several possible routes, including a controller 3.5 mm jack, USB-C, Bluetooth-compatible devices, and the Windows wireless adapter, but those options do not certify every third-party headset. Check the manufacturer’s Xbox instructions.
Why is my Xbox headset giving me sound but no microphone?
Confirm that the cable and controller connection carry microphone input, the headset is unmuted, and the model supports that Xbox. A cable can fit and provide headphone audio without providing a usable microphone path.

What should I do if my USB wireless headset will not pair?
Check the transceiver’s platform mode and follow the exact manufacturer pairing procedure. Sony’s INZONE H5 procedure uses the transceiver connect button and headset power button for about five seconds, but that sequence is specific to the H5 and should not be copied to another model.
Why does my headset work in Windows but not in my game?
The game may still be using a previous output or input device, a different chat channel, or a blocked microphone permission. Recheck the game’s audio and voice menus, select the intended devices, confirm permission, and restart the game after connecting the headset.
Can I use any USB or Bluetooth adapter with a gaming headset?
No. USB connectors and Bluetooth labels do not guarantee platform support, microphone compatibility, or pairing. Compare the exact headset, console or PC, connection method, and any required model-specific transceiver before buying an adapter.
The Bottom Line
Match the exact headset model and connection method to your platform, then set both output and microphone devices, remove every mute or volume block, and test the game’s own chat channel. If a connection or control is unclear, use the headset maker’s instructions rather than assuming that USB, wireless, or Bluetooth works everywhere.
