The safest order for a new Windows 11 gaming desktop is straightforward: finish Windows setup, connect to the internet, run Windows Update, restart, install only the drivers your hardware actually needs from official support pages, check Secure Boot and display settings, and then configure each game individually. Do not treat optional drivers, BIOS flashing, memory profiles, or a universal “best settings” preset as mandatory first-boot tasks.
Before you turn the new desktop on
A few checks prevent hours of troubleshooting later. Confirm which parts you bought and whether the computer is a prebuilt system or a custom build. A prebuilt normally has one model-specific support page; a custom system may require separate pages for the motherboard, graphics card, network adapter, audio hardware, and other components.
Make the physical connections deliberately
- Connect the monitor to the graphics card’s video output when the desktop has a discrete graphics card. Motherboard video outputs may be inactive or may use integrated graphics instead.
- Use the monitor input and cable recommended in the monitor documentation. If you have more than one display, connect each one before configuring Windows.
- Connect Ethernet or join Wi-Fi so Windows can obtain updates and device information.
- Keep the computer connected to reliable power during updates. Do not interrupt a firmware update once one has started.
Record the exact hardware identity
Keep the model number of the prebuilt desktop, or write down the exact motherboard and graphics-card models in a custom build. Windows can show basic information under Settings > System > About, while the purchase documentation, chassis label, or component packaging may provide the precise model needed by a support site. Exact identity matters: a driver for a similar-looking component can be incompatible.

Complete Windows 11 first-run setup
Start Windows and follow the first-run wizard. Choose the correct region and keyboard layout, connect to the network, sign in or create the account you intend to use, and allow Windows to finish its initial configuration. Read the privacy and diagnostic choices rather than accepting unfamiliar options blindly. The labels can change between Windows releases, but the important outcome is a working desktop with network access.

- Open Settings > System > About and note the Windows edition and device name.
- If a device is already working, do not install a replacement utility merely because the manufacturer offers one. First establish whether Windows is missing a driver or feature.
Run Windows Update before chasing individual drivers
Windows 11 uses Windows Update to install recommended hardware drivers automatically. That makes it the correct first source for ordinary chipset, network, audio, storage, and peripheral support. Microsoft also states that optional drivers are not installed automatically, so an optional entry is a choice to investigate, not a task that every new owner must perform.
Use the documented update path
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install the available updates.
- Restart when Windows asks. Microsoft’s driver guidance recommends restarting after the update process even when Windows did not display a restart request.
- Return to Windows Update and check again. A second pass can appear after the first restart.
- When the page is clear, open Advanced options > Optional updates to review optional driver packages separately.
Decide whether an optional driver belongs on your system
| Update category | How Windows handles it | Practical decision |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended driver | Windows 11 normally installs it through Windows Update. | Install it, restart, and verify the device. |
| Optional driver | It is listed under Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates but is not installed automatically. | Install only when the description matches a known device issue, feature, or compatibility need. |
| No suitable driver | Windows Update may be unable to identify or support a particular device. | Use the exact PC or component manufacturer support page. |
Do not select every optional item simply to make the list disappear. If you cannot identify the hardware or the reason for the package, leave it alone until you have checked the device model and the manufacturer’s notes.
Find a missing device and choose the right support page
If a network adapter, audio device, storage controller, or other component still has a warning after Windows Update, identify it before downloading anything. In Device Manager, an unknown device or warning icon indicates that Windows may lack a usable driver. Expand the relevant category, note the device name, and compare it with the hardware list for the desktop or motherboard.
Prebuilt desktop
Use the computer maker’s official support page for the exact model or service tag. Model-specific packages can include custom power, audio, networking, or control features that a generic component package does not provide. Install only the package that corresponds to the affected device and Windows edition.
Custom-built desktop
Use the motherboard maker’s support page for motherboard-integrated devices, and the component maker’s page for a separately installed graphics card, network card, capture card, or other expansion device. A motherboard driver is not a substitute for a graphics-card driver.

Why third-party driver aggregators are a poor shortcut
Driver-collection utilities cannot reliably determine which package is correct for every revision of a component, and they can add software you did not request. The supported path is Windows Update followed by an official PC or component support page tied to the exact model. If a manufacturer provides several packages, read the description and install the one that addresses the device you identified.
Install the graphics driver for the GPU actually installed
Gaming performance and display features depend heavily on the graphics driver, but the title of a graphics card is not enough to choose a package. Confirm the installed GPU in Windows or in the desktop’s documentation, then select the matching Windows package from that GPU maker’s official download site. Do not install a driver for a different model, a laptop variant, or a different operating system.
Use a vendor-specific installer
Close games and other graphics-intensive programs before starting the installer. Read each screen: some packages contain a full control application, while others install only the driver. Restart after installation and verify that Windows recognizes the expected GPU and that the monitor is using its normal resolution.
AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition choices
AMD’s installer presents software types that apply to AMD’s own package. They are not universal labels for every graphics vendor.
| AMD option | What it provides | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Default | The broader Adrenalin feature suite and its normal software interface. | Choose this when you want AMD’s controls and features in addition to the driver. |
| Minimal | Basic controls with fewer software features. | Useful when you want a lighter installation but still need a simple control interface. |
| Driver Only | The display driver without the Adrenalin software interface. | Use when Windows or another application will handle graphics preferences and you do not need AMD’s control panel. |
AMD also offers Factory Reset in its installer. It removes earlier package versions and prevents rolling back to them, so it is not a casual default for a clean new setup. Consider it only when the installer’s documented cleanup behavior is required and you have a recovery plan.

Decide whether BIOS or UEFI work is necessary
A new desktop does not automatically need a BIOS update, a firmware utility, or a memory-profile change. Intel describes firmware interfaces as places to select a boot drive and configure low-level options such as Intel XMP; access methods and update tools vary by manufacturer. AMD EXPO and similar memory profiles are likewise dependent on the processor, motherboard, and memory kit.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When a firmware update is justified
- The PC maker or motherboard maker lists a specific stability, compatibility, security, or processor-support reason that applies to your model.
- The release notes identify an issue you are experiencing or a component you have installed.
- The manufacturer’s instructions explicitly support your board revision and current firmware.
Read the exact manual before entering UEFI. Menu names, key combinations, update files, and recovery procedures differ by model. Keep stable power connected, use only the image intended for that board or PC, and do not shut down during flashing. If the computer is working and no documented need exists, leaving the factory firmware alone is a reasonable choice.
Memory profiles are optional performance settings
Enabling XMP, EXPO, or a similar profile can make compatible memory run at its advertised settings, but it is not a universal setup requirement. The result depends on the memory kit, processor’s memory controller, motherboard firmware, and system stability. If a profile causes failed boots, crashes, or inconsistent behavior, return to the previous setting and follow the board manual rather than assuming the profile must remain enabled.
Check Windows security and Secure Boot
Secure Boot is a security feature that helps prevent malicious software from loading when a Windows PC starts. Check its status in Windows Security or the system information supplied by Windows before changing firmware settings.
Do not use a universal UEFI recipe
Whether Secure Boot appears, and what it is called, depends on the PC’s firmware mode and configuration. Microsoft directs users to the PC maker’s support information for changes. A setting that works on one motherboard can make another system fail to boot if its boot mode, disk layout, or installed operating system is different.

- Check the current Secure Boot status in Windows.
- Look up the exact desktop or motherboard manual if the status is off or unavailable.
- Follow that manufacturer’s instructions for UEFI mode, boot entries, and Secure Boot keys.
- After any change, return to Windows and verify that the system starts normally before installing games.
Do not clear keys, switch boot modes, or enable a firmware option from a generic video guide unless the instructions explicitly match your hardware.
Set the monitor to its supported mode
Windows can expose several resolutions and refresh rates, but the correct choice comes from the monitor’s documentation. Use the display’s native or recommended resolution, then select a refresh rate that the monitor, cable, and graphics output support.
- Open Settings > System > Display and select the intended monitor.
- Choose the resolution marked recommended or identified as native by the monitor documentation.
- Open Advanced display and select a supported refresh rate.
- Arrange multiple displays in the on-screen layout so the pointer and games move to the expected screen.
If a promised refresh rate is missing, check the cable, monitor input, graphics-card output, and monitor on-screen settings before installing another driver. Do not force a mode the display does not document.

Optimizations for windowed games
Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. Microsoft says it moves compatible games to a newer flip presentation model, can reduce frame latency, and can enable Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays. Those benefits are conditional; they are not a promise of a universal frame-rate increase.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Use the control for windowed-game optimizations, or configure it for a particular app when Windows presents that choice.
- Restart the game after changing the setting if Windows requests it, or if the game continues using its previous presentation mode.
The setting does not redefine how exclusive full-screen games or older graphics APIs behave. If a game becomes unstable or looks worse, turn the option back off for that game and compare its own display modes.

Choose a GPU for an individual application
On a system with more than one GPU, Windows can expose per-app choices such as Let Windows decide, Power saving, and High performance. In Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the game or add its executable, open its options, and choose the appropriate preference. A single-GPU desktop may show no meaningful choice.
Windows’ preference can take priority over a graphics-vendor control panel for some applications. If a game is rendering on integrated graphics when a discrete GPU is present, check the Windows per-app setting first, then review the vendor panel. Changing the preference does not guarantee higher performance; it only directs Windows when multiple adapters are available.
Install games and tune them one at a time
After Windows and the required drivers are stable, install your game launchers and games. Let each game complete its own updates before changing advanced options. Record the original settings so you can undo a change.

- Select the monitor and resolution you configured in Windows.
- Choose a general quality preset as a starting point, then adjust demanding options individually.
- Pick full-screen, windowed, or borderless mode according to the game’s behavior and the Windows windowed-optimization scope.
- Configure variable refresh rate, HDR, frame limits, and upscaling only when both the monitor and the game support them.
- Change one setting at a time and play the same scene long enough to notice visual defects, stutter, input delay, or instability.
There is no single best profile for every desktop. The installed GPU, processor, memory, display, Windows version, game engine, and preferred image quality all change the right choice.
Troubleshoot by symptom instead of reinstalling everything
| Symptom | Likely decision point | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update reports no suitable driver | The hardware may need a model-specific package. | Identify the exact device and use the official PC or component support page. Do not use a generic driver collector. |
| An unknown device remains in Device Manager | Windows cannot match the device to a usable driver. | Compare the device with the desktop or motherboard hardware list, then install only the corresponding official package. |
| The optional-updates list contains several drivers | Optional items are not automatically required. | Read each description and install only one that addresses a known device, feature, or compatibility need. |
| The monitor is stuck at a low resolution or refresh rate | The GPU driver, cable, monitor input, or display setting may be wrong. | Confirm the GPU driver, cable, input, native resolution, and documented refresh-rate limits before trying another package. |
| A game uses the wrong GPU | Windows may be assigning the application to the power-saving adapter. | Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, set the game to High performance when that option exists, and restart the game. |
| Secure Boot is missing from firmware menus | The firmware mode and menu structure may not match a generic guide. | Check the current boot mode and use the exact PC or motherboard instructions; do not switch modes blindly. |
| The system becomes unstable after enabling a memory profile | The selected profile may not be stable with this hardware combination. | Return the profile to its previous setting and consult the memory and motherboard documentation. |
| The AMD installer offers Factory Reset | That option removes earlier packages and blocks rollback to them. | Use it only when cleanup is specifically needed; it is not the normal first choice for a new installation. |
Keep the installation maintainable
Once the desktop works, keep a short record of the Windows edition, exact PC or component models, graphics-driver version, monitor model, and any firmware changes you made. That record makes future support decisions safer than downloading a package based on a similar product name.
For later maintenance, continue using Windows Update for recommended Windows and hardware updates, review optional drivers deliberately, and obtain graphics or model-specific packages from the matching manufacturer. Treat BIOS updates, memory profiles, and graphics preferences as targeted changes with a stated reason. If a change causes trouble, undo that change first instead of layering additional utilities on top of it.
