On a new Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra, start with account recovery and a secure screen lock, then check for updates, tune the display and battery options to suit your routine, and test the S Pen and privacy controls. Treat this as a personal setup checklist, not a list of Samsung-prescribed defaults: the right choices depend on whether you mainly read, take notes, watch video or work across apps.
Samsung announced the Galaxy Tab S12 series on September 30, 2026. Availability began October 7 in select markets, and Samsung announced US availability for October 7. The Ultra has a 14.6-inch display and includes an S Pen. Samsung’s global announcement and US availability announcement establish those details. Menu labels and available controls can vary by region and software version, so use the settings shown on your tablet rather than relying on a menu path that may not match.
What should I set up first on a new Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra?
1. Secure your accounts and plan for recovery
Complete sign-in to the Google and Samsung accounts you intend to use. Then choose a screen lock that protects the device if it is lost or left unattended. Review the tablet’s account recovery and device-finding options, and confirm that the recovery details and contact methods are current. These checks can make it easier to regain access or locate the tablet if something goes wrong. Do not assume a particular recovery feature is enabled; inspect the controls on your device and decide what to turn on.

After the initial setup, open the tablet’s settings and look for the software update control. Install any available update, following the on-screen prompts. Once you have restored or installed your apps, check their respective app-store update screens as well. The exact settings path and labels can differ with the software build, so follow the wording currently displayed on the tablet.

How should I tune the large display for everyday use?
The Ultra’s 14.6-inch screen can serve very different routines, from reading and video to handwriting and side-by-side work. Review brightness, adaptive refresh and eye-comfort or night-display controls, changing one at a time so you can tell which setting suits you.
- Brightness: Set it for the room and task. A comfortable level for indoor reading may not be right in bright surroundings.
- Adaptive refresh: The US announcement describes an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate. A smoother-feeling display may matter more to some people than prioritizing battery preferences; choose based on how the tablet feels in your apps. Do not assume a specific battery saving from a different setting.
- Eye comfort or night display: Review any available controls for evening use or a warmer screen appearance. Keep them only if they improve comfort for you.
Samsung’s US announcement also lists up to 1,600 nits peak brightness; retain its product-announcement qualification rather than treating that figure as a typical brightness level in every situation. The same announcement states up to 23 hours of battery life, which is Samsung’s figure, not a guarantee of how long a particular person’s tablet will last. Which battery settings are worth reviewing?
Look for battery protection and power-saving controls in the software currently installed, then choose according to whether charging convenience or runtime matters more to you. Battery protection may be relevant if the tablet spends long periods connected to power; power-saving controls may be useful when you want to stretch a charge. The available choices and their effects depend on the shipped software, so read each setting’s on-screen description before changing it.
Samsung says the Ultra can charge from 0% to 100% in about 95 minutes with a 45W adapter. That is Samsung’s stated charging figure under its qualifications, not a promise for every charger or charging situation. Check the included documentation and the adapter you use rather than assuming all adapters provide the same result. Samsung’s US announcement gives the figure and its qualification.

How can I make the S Pen useful from day one?
Try the S Pen in the apps you actually plan to use, rather than assuming every shortcut or pen action is enabled by default. Test handwriting, note-taking and annotation, including marking up a screenshot if that is part of your routine. If a shortcut or gesture is important to you, find its control in the current software and confirm it works before relying on it.
- Write a short note and check whether the handwriting experience suits your preferred app.
- Annotate a screenshot or document you expect to use regularly.
- Review available pen actions and shortcuts, and enable only those that help your workflow.
How do I make the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra easier to use for work?
If you plan to use the tablet as a work surface, arrange the home screen and taskbar around the apps you open most. Explore split screen or other multi-window controls, and check whether DeX is available on the model and software you have. Use the on-device descriptions to learn how each option behaves before building a routine around it. These changes are optional: a reader or video viewer may prefer a simpler home screen and fewer persistent shortcuts.

Samsung presents the Tab S12 series as productivity-focused and says professional-grade apps and accessories are available. A compatible keyboard cover can help if you type often, but verify that any accessory is explicitly compatible with the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra before buying it; a general Tab-series label is not enough to establish fit. Which privacy settings should I inspect?
Review the privacy controls in the tablet’s Android and Samsung software for camera, microphone, location and notification access. Check permissions for apps you installed or restored, and ask whether each app needs that access for the feature you use. Menu names and controls may differ across software versions and regions, so use the labels on your screen and avoid assuming that a permission is granted or denied by default.

What should I change now—and what can wait?
Complete account and lock setup, check for updates, and confirm recovery options first. Then adjust display, battery, S Pen, work-surface and privacy settings only as needed. These choices are reversible: live with the tablet for a few days and revisit any setting that makes reading, writing or working less comfortable.
