The most complete Android-to-Android transfer happens during the tablet’s first setup. Charge and unlock the old device, sign in with the Google Account that holds your apps and backup, connect both devices to the internet, then choose Copy apps and data on the new tablet. You can copy directly with a compatible cable or wirelessly; Google says both methods support the same data. If the old device is unavailable, restore a compatible Google Account backup instead.

Transfer time ranges from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the amount of data. A transfer is not automatically a perfect clone: downloads, non-Play apps, unsupported app data, non-Google accounts and some settings need separate attention. Do not erase the old device until you have checked the new tablet.

Prepare both devices before turning on the tablet

A few checks prevent most failed or incomplete transfers. Do them before starting the new tablet’s setup wizard.

Charge, unlock and connect

  • Charge the old device and the new tablet. A transfer can run for hours, and a shutdown can interrupt it.
  • Make sure you know the old device’s PIN, pattern or password. The tablet may ask for the old screen lock when restoring a backup.
  • Connect both devices to a reliable Wi-Fi network or another internet connection. Google recommends Wi-Fi for the transfer process.
  • Check free storage on the tablet in its Settings app. The tablet needs room for the selected apps and data, and some apps may require additional space after installation.

Confirm the Google Account and backup

Identify the Google Account used to obtain your Play Store apps and to back up the old device. You will need that account’s password or other sign-in method. If you might need cloud restore, verify that a recent backup exists before you begin. Backups must have been enabled on the old device, and backup coverage differs by app.

Check Android versions and device management

Transfer and restore availability varies by Android version, tablet model and app. Google notes that some backup and transfer functions require Android 9 or later. Restoring to a tablet running an older Android version than the source can leave some information behind. A work- or school-managed device may restrict transfer or backup of organizational data; your administrator’s policy takes precedence.

Copy apps and data during first-time setup

Use the tablet’s setup wizard for the direct transfer. Labels differ slightly by manufacturer and Android release, so follow the wording shown on your screen.

  1. Turn on the new tablet. Tap Start if that button appears, then select your language and region when prompted.
  2. Connect the tablet to the internet. Join Wi-Fi or use another available connection. Keep the tablet connected while setup checks for updates and transfer options.
  3. Choose the copy option. When the wizard asks whether you want to copy apps and data, choose the option to copy from another device. Do not skip this screen if you want Google’s guided transfer; Google’s general instructions say the setup transfer may only be offered once.
  4. Prepare the old device. Unlock it and keep it nearby. Approve prompts that ask you to trust, pair or authorize the new tablet.
  5. Select cable or wireless transfer. For a cable transfer, connect the devices with a data-capable cable that fits both ports. An adapter may be necessary. For wireless transfer, choose the no-cable or wireless option and follow the pairing instructions on both screens.
  6. Choose what to copy. Review the categories and apps presented by the wizard. Deselect items you do not need if storage is limited, then confirm the copy.
  7. Leave the devices connected and wait. Keep the old device unlocked when requested and do not disconnect a cable. Google says the process can take from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the amount of data.

After the copy finishes, complete the remaining tablet setup, including screen-lock, account and privacy choices. Some apps continue downloading from Google Play after you reach the home screen.

Choose the transfer route that fits your situation

Route What you need When it is useful Important limitation
Direct cable A compatible data cable for both devices; an adapter may be needed Both devices are available and you want a physical connection during setup The connectors must fit, and the cable must support data rather than charging only
Wireless Both devices, Wi-Fi or another internet connection, and the on-screen pairing flow You do not have a suitable cable or the ports use different connectors Keep both devices close, powered and connected until the wizard completes
Cloud restore The correct Google Account and a backup made on the old device The old device is lost, damaged or unavailable Only information included in the backup can be restored; Android-version compatibility matters

When cable transfer is the better choice

Use the cable route when you have a known-compatible data cable and both devices can remain connected. Check each port before starting; a USB-C-to-USB-C cable, for example, is not interchangeable with every older connector. If the tablet asks for an adapter, use one that supports data. A cable does not automatically copy more than wireless: Google’s wording is, “Both methods support the same data.”

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

When wireless transfer is practical

Wireless is the simplest option when the devices have incompatible ports or you do not have a suitable cable. Select the no-cable option on the tablet, then complete the pairing and approval prompts on the old device. Keep Wi-Fi active and avoid moving either device out of range while the copy is running.

When to restore from a Google Account backup

Choose the backup route when the old device cannot be used. During setup, sign in with the Google Account associated with the old device and select the intended device backup if more than one is listed. The wizard may request the old device’s screen lock as a security check. A backup that was never enabled, or a backup made under another account, cannot provide the missing data.

Know what the setup transfer includes

Google’s Android setup flow can copy many everyday items, but the exact result depends on the device, Android version and whether each app supports Android backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Generally available through setup copying What can affect the result
Apps and certain app data Each app decides what data it allows Android to back up and restore
Music, photos and videos Media may be available through a cloud service rather than physically copied during setup
Contacts stored on the device or SIM Contacts synchronized to a non-Google service follow that service’s own sync process
Text messages, including multimedia in messages Results vary by device and Android version
Most settings, wallpaper and call history Some settings and manufacturer-specific options are excluded

Items that need a separate plan

Review these categories before declaring the move complete. They are commonly omitted from Google’s described setup flow.

  • Downloaded files: PDFs and other files in a Downloads folder do not necessarily copy. Move them manually or use the storage service where you keep them.
  • Hidden-folder media: Photos or videos stored in hidden folders may not be included.
  • Apps installed outside Google Play: Sideloaded or otherwise non-Play apps are not restored by the Play-based setup process. Obtain them again only from a source you trust and that supports the new tablet.
  • App data without Android backup: An app can reinstall without bringing back its local settings, game progress or files if its developer does not support Android backup.
  • Non-Google accounts and their data: Email, calendars, contacts and files tied to another provider require that provider’s sign-in and sync or export process.
  • Ringtones and some settings: These may need to be selected or recreated on the tablet.

Photos and videos

Open the photo service you used on the old device and allow it to finish synchronizing before assuming anything is missing. Google notes that photos and videos may be available through Google Photos; files that were never uploaded may require a manual copy or a drive-based transfer.

WhatsApp and other app-specific backups

WhatsApp chats restore from the cloud after you sign in on the new device and open WhatsApp only when WhatsApp backup was enabled on the old device. Other apps have their own export, account-sync or backup controls. Check those controls on the old device while it still works, then complete the app’s restore process on the tablet.

Reinstall apps that did not appear

Use the same Google Account that originally acquired the apps. Paid Google Play apps can be used on compatible Android devices without being purchased again under that account, although an app or its content may not support every tablet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Google Play Store on the tablet.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
  3. Choose Manage apps & device, then open Manage.
  4. Change the filter from This device to Not installed.
  5. Select the apps you want and tap Install. If an app is disabled rather than absent, choose the option to enable it.

If an expected purchase is missing, check that the tablet is signed in to the exact Google Account used for that purchase. If the app does not appear, compatibility, developer availability or regional distribution may be the reason rather than a failed transfer.

Verify the new tablet before erasing the old one

Use the tablet for a deliberate verification pass. Do not reset, trade in or recycle the old device until the items you care about are present and usable.

  • Unlock the tablet and open your essential apps. Confirm that each account signs in and that app-specific data is present.
  • Open Photos or your chosen media service and check recent and older albums.
  • Search the Files app for documents, PDFs and other downloads you expected to move.
  • Check contacts, calendars and messages, including multimedia messages if they matter to you.
  • Review call history, wallpaper and important device settings.
  • Open WhatsApp and any other app that uses a separate backup procedure, then complete its restore.
  • Confirm that paid Play apps are listed under the correct Google Account and reinstall any missing compatible apps.
  • Check available storage after installations finish. A tablet that looked spacious before app downloads may have much less free space afterward.

Only after this check should you use the old device’s factory-reset or erase option. Removing the old device’s data first eliminates your easiest recovery path for items that were never copied.

Troubleshoot common transfer problems

The copy option does not appear

Make sure you are still in the first-time setup wizard and that the tablet has an internet connection. Restarting setup may be necessary if the wizard was interrupted. If setup has already been completed, Google’s broader switching guidance may offer backup restore or manual sync and copy options; some restore routes require a factory reset. Confirm the tablet maker’s current instructions before resetting, because a reset erases data already placed on the tablet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cable is connected but nothing happens

  • Unlock the old device and watch for a trust, USB or authorization prompt.
  • Check that the cable fits both ports and supports data. A charging-only cable cannot carry the transfer.
  • Try the adapter specified by the tablet’s setup screen if the connectors differ.
  • Disconnect and reconnect both ends, then choose cable transfer again if the wizard offers it.
  • If the connection remains unreliable, return to setup and use the wireless route instead.

Wireless pairing fails or stops

Keep both devices close, connected to Wi-Fi and charged. Approve every pairing prompt on the old device. If the process stalls, restart both devices and repeat the wireless selection from the setup wizard. A cable is optional, so changing methods is reasonable when the radio connection is unstable.

Some apps or data are missing

First determine whether the missing item belongs to a category that setup does not copy, such as Downloads, hidden-folder media, a non-Play app or data from an app without Android backup. Then check the app’s own account or restore process and reinstall compatible Play apps from Not installed. A successful transfer can still omit unsupported content.

The backup is listed but will not restore completely

Confirm that you selected the correct Google Account and device backup. Check the Android-version relationship: restoring to an older Android release than the source can produce an incomplete result. App support also varies, so a backup can restore system information while leaving a particular app’s local data behind.

A work or school profile is incomplete

Organization-managed devices can block backup or transfer of work data. Personal data may move while managed data remains controlled by the organization. Contact the administrator for an approved migration method rather than attempting to bypass management controls.

Account for manufacturer-specific setup screens

Google’s instructions are general Android guidance. Port layouts, wording, setup order and available transfer tools differ among tablet makers. Follow the tablet’s on-screen prompts first. Google specifically notes that Samsung devices may offer Smart Switch in addition to the standard Android flow; owners of other brands should consult the manufacturer’s current support instructions when the displayed options differ.

These differences do not change the core decision: start the transfer during setup, use a compatible cable or wireless pairing when the old device is present, or restore the correct Google Account backup when it is not. The tablet’s Android version and each app’s backup support determine how complete the result can be.

Transfer time, storage and data-safety checklist

Check Why it matters Action
Power A long transfer can stop if either device shuts down Charge both devices before starting and keep them powered
Internet Setup, cloud restore and Play downloads need connectivity Use a stable Wi-Fi connection and avoid interrupting it
Storage The tablet may not have room for every selected app and file Check free space before copying and again after downloads complete
Credentials The account controls backup access and Play purchases Use the Google Account associated with the old device and apps
Security Erasing the old device removes a recovery source Verify apps, files, photos, contacts, calendars and messages first

Google’s few-minutes-to-few-hours estimate is an operational range, not an average or guarantee. Large photo libraries, many apps, slower Wi-Fi and cloud downloads can extend the wait. Let the wizard finish rather than judging progress by a single percentage display.
