The safest way to set up a new Android phone is to decide what data you actually need, transfer it deliberately, create a strong screen lock, install every available system update, audit app permissions, configure backup, and verify Find Hub before the phone is lost. Android menus differ by version, manufacturer, and carrier, so use the likely paths below or search Settings for the named feature.

Keep the old phone until you have checked high-value files, contacts, messages, authenticator access, and recovery codes on the new one. A transfer can be successful while still omitting app-specific data, downloads, non-Google accounts, or files stored in unusual locations.

Before you turn on the new phone

Charge, unlock, and check storage

Charge both phones and make sure you can unlock the old one. The new phone needs enough free storage for the apps, photos, videos, messages, and other data you choose to copy. Connect to reliable Wi-Fi if possible; Google recommends internet access, preferably Wi-Fi, for the transfer and for downloading updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not erase, trade in, or factory-reset the old phone yet. You may need it to approve account sign-ins, retrieve an authenticator code, export a password vault, or recover a messaging account that does not restore automatically.

Decide whether to copy directly or restore a backup

During first-run setup, Android normally offers a choice such as Copy apps & data or restoring a backup associated with your Google Account. Make this decision during setup: Google warns that the copy option may not be available later.

Choice Best when What to check
Copy directly from the old phone You still have the old phone, can unlock it, and want the newest local data. Both phones have compatible connectors or stable wireless connectivity; enough storage is available on the new phone.
Restore a Google Account backup The old phone is unavailable, damaged, or already wiped. The backup is recent, uses the Google Account you intend to keep, and contains the categories you need.
Copy with a cable You want a direct connection and have a cable that fits both phones. You may need an adapter. Confirm that the cable supports data transfer, not only charging.
Copy wirelessly You do not have a suitable cable or prefer fewer accessories. Keep both phones charged, unlocked when prompted, and near one another until the copy finishes.

Google says wired and wireless transfer support the same data. A cable is therefore optional, not a security requirement. If you buy or borrow one, confirm both connectors and data-transfer compatibility before starting.

Choose exactly what moves to the new phone

Data that may transfer

Depending on the phones, Android can copy apps and some app data, music, photos, videos, contacts saved on the phone or SIM, text messages, most phone settings, message media, wallpaper, and call history. The exact result depends on the device models, Android releases, and the apps involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Data that may not transfer

Plan a separate check for downloads, media in hidden folders, apps installed outside Google Play, unsupported app data, non-Google accounts and their data, and certain settings. An app can appear on the new phone while its local database, downloaded files, or sign-in session is missing.

  • Open your old file manager and inspect folders such as Downloads, Documents, recordings, and any private or hidden media area.
  • Check photos and videos in both the phone’s local storage and any cloud photo service you use.
  • Open your authenticator, password manager, banking, work, and messaging apps on the old phone and follow each app’s export, transfer, or recovery procedure.
  • Confirm that important contacts are in the account or storage location you expect rather than only on the old handset.
  • Save recovery codes for two-factor authentication somewhere you can reach if the old phone fails.

After the transfer, compare a few known items: a recent conversation, a contact created recently, a downloaded document, a camera photo, and your call history. This catches omissions before you surrender the old device.

Complete first-run setup without weakening privacy

Use the account you intend to keep

Sign in with the Google Account that should own backups, app purchases, and device-finding access. If the phone is for a child, a work profile, or a shared household, stop and configure the appropriate account or management profile instead of treating it as a personal handset.

Read optional prompts instead of accepting everything

Setup screens can offer extra services, personalization, diagnostics, location features, or automatic restoration. Turn on a feature only when you understand what it does and which account or data it uses. You can usually revisit these controls in Settings, but some transfer choices are presented only during initial setup.

Use Settings search when labels differ

Manufacturers rearrange menus. If a path below is not present, open Settings and search for the feature name: screen lock, software update, Privacy dashboard, backup, Find Hub, or app permissions. Search is often more reliable than following a path from a different Android release.

Set a strong screen lock first

Use a PIN, pattern, or password

Choose a PIN, pattern, or password rather than swipe-only access. A longer PIN or password is harder to guess; avoid birthdays, repeated digits, and patterns that begin in an obvious corner. Fingerprint or face unlock can make daily access easier, but they should be convenience layers over the underlying screen lock, not replacements for it.

The screen lock protects more than the display. Google says some backed-up data receives additional encryption tied to the device screen lock and specifically advises using a PIN, pattern, or password rather than swipe or Smart Lock for backup protection. This does not mean every cloud-backed item receives the same protection.

Configure lock-screen exposure

Open the lock-screen notification controls and choose whether notifications show full content, hide sensitive content, or do not appear. Hiding message previews reduces what someone can read while the phone is locked, especially if the handset is used in public or temporarily handed to another person. The exact label may be Notifications on lock screen, Sensitive notifications, or similar.

Install Android, security, and Google Play system updates

Check all three update areas

  1. Open Settings → System → Software updates and check for an Android update.
  2. Open the security section and check Android security update.
  3. Check Google Play system update. On some phones, these controls appear under Security & privacy → System & updates.
  4. Restart when prompted, then return to the same screens and confirm that no additional update is waiting.

Connect to Wi-Fi and, for a large update, charge the phone to at least 75% in line with Google’s guidance. Keep the phone connected to power if the installation is lengthy.

Understand update timing

Update availability and rollout timing depend on the exact model, manufacturer, region, and carrier. A new phone is not guaranteed to receive an update on the same day as another Android phone, and a generic Android support statement cannot establish a particular model’s support duration. Check the maker’s instructions for your exact model if an update is missing or a promised patch date matters.

Keep app protection on and install apps carefully

Use Google Play and leave Play Protect enabled

Google describes Play Protect as checking potentially harmful apps, warning you, and removing apps when necessary. Keep it enabled and install apps from Google Play when a suitable version is available. Play Protect is a safeguard, not a guarantee that every app is trustworthy, private, or free of misleading behavior.

Understand the risk of sideloading

Sideloading means installing an app package from outside Google Play. It can be necessary in limited situations, but it changes the risk profile and may bypass the screening and update path you expect. Google Android Help states: Important: If you download apps from unknown sources, your device and personal information can be at risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you must install an app from outside the store, obtain it from a source you can verify, check the developer and package name carefully, install only what you need, and review the permission requests immediately afterward. Turn off the ability to install unknown apps again when you finish if your phone exposes that control.

Audit app permissions with Privacy dashboard

Open the dashboard

Look for Privacy dashboard under Privacy or Security & privacy. If you cannot find it, search Settings for “Privacy dashboard” or “permissions.” The dashboard shows which apps accessed sensitive permissions and lets you inspect access by permission type or by app.

Review the permissions that matter most

  • Camera: allow it for camera and video-call apps that need to capture images; remove it from apps with no plausible camera function.
  • Microphone: check recording, calling, and voice features. A flashlight, calculator, or wallpaper app normally should not need continuous microphone access.
  • Location: choose approximate or precise access when offered, and prefer “only while using the app” unless background access is essential.
  • Contacts: grant access only when an app genuinely needs to select or manage contacts.
  • Photos and videos: use a limited or selected-media option when available instead of exposing the entire library.
  • Notifications, nearby devices, and files: review these when an app requests them, especially if the request is unrelated to its main function.

Google’s documented history window is seven days on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12. These are access-history windows, not guarantees that an app has never used a permission outside the visible period. Android releases and manufacturers can change both availability and navigation.

Recheck after installing unfamiliar apps

Permission review is most useful after your actual app set is installed. Revisit the dashboard after adding a social, shopping, keyboard, utility, or sideloaded app. Remove access that is not necessary for the app’s stated function, and use the operating system’s one-time or while-in-use option where available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure backup deliberately

Know what Android backup can contain

Android backup can include app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS. App developers decide whether all of an app’s data can be backed up or restored, so an enabled backup does not promise a complete copy of every app.

Google says backup data is encrypted in transit and that some data receives additional encryption with the screen lock. The cited guidance specifically excludes Google Photos photos and videos and carrier MMS media from that screen-lock encryption statement. Do not treat every item shown in a backup screen as having identical end-to-end protection.

Inspect categories and account controls

  1. Search Settings for backup and open the Android backup controls.
  2. Confirm which Google Account receives the backup.
  3. Review the listed categories, such as apps, contacts, call history, device settings, and SMS/MMS.
  4. Decide whether the convenience of cloud restoration outweighs the amount of data stored remotely.
  5. Check app-specific backup or export controls for authenticators, password managers, secure notes, work apps, and messaging services.

If reducing cloud storage is a priority, inspect selected categories and account-level controls instead of assuming that one master switch describes every item. Keep an offline copy of irreplaceable documents and recovery codes where appropriate.

Turn on and verify Find Hub before the phone is lost

Confirm the prerequisites

Sign in to the Google Account, turn on location, and make sure the phone can connect to the internet. Google says a signed-in Android device has Find Hub turned on automatically. Exact capabilities still depend on the model, settings, and connectivity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify that the device appears

  1. Search Settings for Find Hub or Find My Device, depending on the label on your phone.
  2. Open the finding service and confirm that the current phone is listed under the correct account.
  3. Check that its recent location or online status can be displayed.
  4. Review the available actions for locating, securing, or erasing the device remotely.
  5. Update your Google Account recovery email, phone number, and backup methods so you can sign in if the handset disappears.

Remote actions cannot overcome every situation: a phone may be offline, powered down, damaged, or unable to obtain a location. Verification while the phone is in your hands gives you a much better chance of using the service when it matters.

Review the combined Security and privacy page

On Android 13 and later, Settings may provide a combined Security & privacy page. It can surface status alerts for device lock, account security, app security and Play Protect, updates, device finding, permissions, and lock-screen notification controls. Work through each warning rather than assuming that a green-looking overview proves every setting is ideal.

Older Android versions may separate Security and Privacy, while manufacturers can change the labels or layout. Use Settings search for each item if the combined page is absent. Resolve high-impact warnings first: no screen lock, an overdue security update, disabled app protection, missing device finding, or an app with unnecessary access to sensitive data.

A practical post-setup verification checklist

Run this checklist after the transfer, updates, and app installation are complete:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The new phone unlocks with a PIN, pattern, or password, and biometric unlock is optional convenience access.
  • Android, the security patch, and Google Play system show the latest updates offered to this model.
  • Play Protect is enabled, and apps came from Google Play unless you deliberately accepted a different source.
  • Privacy dashboard access history has been reviewed for camera, microphone, location, contacts, photos, and files.
  • Backup categories and the destination Google Account match your decision about cloud storage.
  • Authenticator, password manager, banking, work, and messaging accounts can sign in or have a documented recovery path.
  • Important photos, videos, downloads, documents, contacts, messages, and call history are present.
  • Find Hub lists the phone and your account recovery details are current.
  • Lock-screen notification previews expose no information you would not want a stranger to see.

Common setup problems and fixes

The copy option is missing

If you skipped or completed first-run setup, the direct-copy option may no longer be offered. Check whether the new phone still needs a factory reset before attempting another setup, and back up anything already created on the new phone first. If resetting is not practical, restore the available Google Account backup and move app-specific data through each app’s own transfer process.

Some apps installed but appear empty

This usually means the app itself transferred while its local data, account session, or developer-controlled backup did not. Sign in again, look for an in-app restore or export function, and keep the old phone available until the app confirms recovery. Apps installed outside Google Play and apps that exclude their data from Android backup need particular attention.

Contacts or messages are incomplete

Check whether contacts were saved to the SIM, phone storage, or a different account. Verify that the selected backup includes contacts and SMS/MMS, then compare recent items with the old phone. Carrier MMS media and app-specific message attachments may follow different backup rules.

An update does not appear

Confirm the phone is connected to Wi-Fi, has sufficient charge and storage, and is checking the correct update screen. Rollouts can be staged by model, region, and carrier, so a missing update may not indicate a fault. If the manufacturer has published a model-specific schedule, follow that guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find Hub cannot locate the phone

Check that the phone is signed in to the intended Google Account, location and connectivity are enabled, and the device appears in the finding service while it is online. If it is powered off or disconnected, remote location and actions may be delayed or unavailable.

When it is safe to retire the old phone

Keep the old phone until you have completed the verification checklist and successfully recovered every high-value account. Then sign out of accounts, remove any eSIM or physical SIM that should move elsewhere, encrypt or protect any remaining local data as appropriate, and use the phone’s factory-reset option before disposal or transfer. Do not factory-reset first and hope that cloud backup contains everything: Android backup coverage varies by app and data type.

A privacy-conscious setup is not a single switch. It is the combination of a real screen lock, current software, cautious app installation, least-necessary permissions, intentional backup choices, and a tested way to find or erase the phone if it disappears.
