Set up a new 4K smart TV in this order: place and connect the hardware, complete the on-screen first-run wizard, join Wi-Fi, install software updates, add apps, connect and configure external devices, then tune picture and sound for your room. A 4K panel does not automatically make every source 4K or HDR; the source, HDMI port, cable, receiver, copy-protection standard, and input settings all have to support the format.
Before you turn the TV on
Keep the TV’s model-specific manual nearby. Menu names, supported HDMI formats, app stores, account requirements, and update behavior differ by manufacturer, operating system, model year, region, and firmware. The instructions below describe a reliable sequence while leaving brand-specific labels to that manual.
Choose a safe location
- Place the screen on a stable, level surface or attach the required stand exactly as illustrated in the manual.
- If you are wall-mounting, use a mount rated for the TV’s size and weight, attach the correct screws and spacers, and leave enough clearance for ventilation and cable bends.
- Keep the screen away from direct sunlight and strong lamps. Glare can make a technically accurate picture look washed out.
- Make sure the power outlet, Wi-Fi signal, antenna or cable feed, and HDMI devices can be reached without sharply bending cables.
Gather the connections you actually need
Connect only the equipment you plan to use: an antenna or cable feed, a streaming box or game console, a Blu-ray player, a soundbar or receiver, and any network accessories. Do not buy a new HDMI cable simply because the TV is new. Cable and port requirements depend on the resolution, HDR format, frame rate, and copy-protection version used by the connected equipment.
Recommended Free Tools
Complete the first-run wizard
- Attach power and switch on the TV. Insert the power cord, turn on the set, and select the language, country or region, and time settings requested by the wizard.
- Accept the required terms and privacy choices. Read the data-sharing options instead of accepting every optional setting automatically. The wording and available choices vary by platform and country.
- Choose a setup method. Some Google TV models offer phone-assisted setup, but Google documents that feature as model-dependent. If it is not offered, use the remote and the on-screen keyboard.
- Connect to your home network. Select the intended Wi-Fi name, enter its password carefully, and wait for the TV to confirm an internet connection. If the TV offers Ethernet and your router is nearby, a wired connection can simplify setup; use the connection types supported by your model.
- Sign in only when your platform asks. Roku TV setup, for example, asks you to sign in to an existing Roku account or create one. Other platforms use different accounts, and some basic functions may work before sign-in. Do not assume every television requires the same account.
- Let the TV check for updates. Keep it connected to power and the network while the update downloads and restarts. Roku describes updates as a way to deliver the latest features, programming, and fixes; other manufacturers use their own update schedules and menu paths.
- Scan for broadcast channels if applicable. If an antenna or cable feed is attached, run the channel scan offered by the wizard or later in the TV’s broadcast settings. Skip this step if you use internet apps exclusively.
After the wizard finishes, write down the TV model and firmware version shown in the support or system-information screen. Those details make later troubleshooting and manual lookups much more precise.

Connect the TV to Wi-Fi reliably
Use the intended network
Home routers often expose separate network names for different bands or guest access. Choose the network that gives the TV normal access to your streaming services and local devices. A guest network may isolate the TV from a phone, casting device, or media server even when internet access works.
Check the password and signal before blaming the TV
- Re-enter the password slowly; Wi-Fi passwords are case-sensitive.
- Move the router or use a supported wired connection if the TV is far away or behind dense walls.
- Test the same network with a phone in the TV’s location. If the phone also struggles, the problem is coverage or the router rather than the TV.
- Restart the router and TV only after noting any error message. A restart can clear a temporary negotiation failure but will not fix an incorrect password or unsupported security mode.
Platform instructions are not interchangeable. Roku’s TV guidance specifically calls for the Wi-Fi network name and password during setup, while Google’s phone-assisted flow is available only on certain Google TV models. Follow the screens your own TV presents.
Install apps and handle accounts
Open the TV’s own app interface
From the home screen, open the platform’s app store, channel store, or app-management area, search for the service you want, and choose its install or add command. A Roku Express 4K+ guide describes adding apps through the Streaming Store, but that is a Roku-player workflow, not a universal instruction for every smart TV. Your television may use different labels.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteExpect availability differences
An app can be absent because of the TV model, operating system, firmware, service licensing, or country. Search the platform store first; do not assume that an app available on a phone, browser, or external streaming player is also available as a native TV app.

Sign in safely
- Use the app’s displayed activation code or on-screen sign-in method when available.
- Prefer a phone or computer for long passwords if the TV offers that option.
- Enable a device lock or two-step verification on the service account where supported.
- Sign out of accounts before giving away or returning the TV, then use the manufacturer’s reset procedure.
Install the essential apps first and test playback before adding a large collection. This isolates account, network, and compatibility problems instead of creating several unknowns at once.
Connect external devices and select the correct input
Wire one device at a time
- Turn off the TV and the device if the device manual recommends doing so.
- Connect the device to an HDMI port identified in the TV manual as supporting the required resolution, HDR format, or audio-return feature.
- Connect the device’s power, switch it on, and wait for its startup screen.
- Press the TV remote’s input or source control and select the HDMI port you used.
- Rename the input if the TV offers that option. A clear name such as “Console” or “Player” reduces mistakes later.
Repeat the process for each source. A black screen can simply mean the TV is viewing HDMI 2 while the active player is connected to HDMI 1.
Soundbar and receiver connections
Consult both the TV and audio device manuals before choosing HDMI ARC, HDMI eARC, optical audio, or another output. The supported connection, cable requirement, control settings, and available audio formats vary by model. After wiring, select the matching audio output in the TV’s sound settings and choose the corresponding input on the soundbar or receiver. If you want the TV remote to control volume, enable the control feature named by both devices; the label is not identical across brands.

A 4K panel alone does not guarantee 4K/HDR playback. Every link in the path must support the source’s requirements: the player or console, HDMI cable, TV port, receiver or switch, HDMI version, HDCP copy-protection level, and the TV’s input format setting.

“If even one device does not support HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2, then the 4K movie or TV show can only be viewed in a lower resolution, such as 720p or 1080p.”
— Roku official support guidance
Check the complete HDMI chain
- If a player runs through an AV receiver, soundbar, splitter, or switch, verify that intermediary device supports the same 4K, HDR, HDMI, and HDCP requirements as the TV and source.
- Confirm the individual HDMI port’s capabilities. A television may support a higher format on selected ports rather than on every input.
- Check the source device’s video-output menu. Set its resolution, HDR behavior, and refresh rate to values supported by both the device and the TV.
- Update the TV and source firmware before changing several settings at once.
Enable the input’s enhanced format when required
Sony says supported TVs may require the HDMI signal format to be set to Enhanced for a specified 4K picture format, and notes that not all 4K TVs support HDR. Roku’s guidance gives brand-specific examples such as Samsung’s HDMI UHD Color and Sony’s Enhanced mode, and says some HDR-capable TVs do not enable HDR on an input by default. Treat those names as examples, not universal menu paths. Open the manual for your exact model and enable the format on the specific port carrying the 4K/HDR source.
Decide whether a new HDMI cable is justified
Replace a cable only when the existing cable cannot carry the equipment’s required signal, is damaged, or must run through an inaccessible location where reliability matters. Roku mentions an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable as an optional choice for certain installations, including a long or inaccessible run or a setup where reducing potential Wi-Fi or Bluetooth interference is useful. It is not required for built-in TV apps. Match the cable rating to the actual source, port, resolution, HDR format, and frame rate.
Choose a sensible starting picture
Use picture modes as starting points
Open the picture menu while viewing the type of content you care about. Common modes may include a filmmaker, cinema, standard, sports, game, or vivid-style option, but names and processing differ by manufacturer. Select the mode that looks comfortable and natural, then compare it with another mode using the same scene. There is no evidence for one universal best mode or one set of numerical values for every room and panel.

Adjust for the room, not a showroom
- Reduce brightness or backlight if a dark room feels uncomfortable; raise it when daylight makes details hard to see.
- Use the TV’s ambient-light or automatic-brightness feature only if its behavior suits your viewing habits.
- Keep sharpness and artificial detail enhancement restrained if fine outlines look exaggerated.
- Disable motion processing when it creates an artificial “soap-opera” appearance, or test a lower setting for sports if you prefer smoother movement.
- Check the aspect-ratio or picture-size setting so the image is not cropped or stretched.
Make changes one at a time and watch familiar content for several minutes. A setting that looks impressive on a bright demo clip may be tiring during a full movie.
Handle HDR separately
When the TV detects HDR, it may switch to a separate picture preset. Adjust HDR while HDR content is actually playing; ordinary SDR settings do not always control the HDR preset. If HDR never activates, use the troubleshooting sequence below rather than forcing extreme picture values.

Start with the correct output
In the audio menu, select TV speakers, HDMI ARC/eARC, optical, or another output that matches your physical connection. If a soundbar is connected by HDMI, make sure the cable is plugged into the TV’s ARC/eARC-labeled port when the manuals require it. For optical, select optical output and use the soundbar’s optical input.

- Test a built-in app and an HDMI source; one may use a different audio path.
- Confirm the soundbar or receiver is on the matching input and not muted.
- If there is silence or intermittent audio, temporarily choose a basic or automatic digital-audio format, then test advanced formats again after the connection is stable.
- Enable the TV’s device-control feature only when both devices support it; otherwise, use the audio device’s remote.
Manufacturers do not share one universal sound-mode recipe. Compare the available movie, music, voice, and night modes at a comfortable volume, and keep the mode that makes dialogue clear without making effects harsh.

Verify what the TV is actually receiving
Do not rely only on the product name or a streaming title. Use the TV’s information banner, source details, or picture-status screen while the content is playing. Confirm the displayed resolution and whether HDR is active. Some services also show playback quality inside their app, although the label and timing vary.
Built-in app versus external player
| Setup path | What to verify | Typical limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in TV apps | TV internet connection, current firmware, platform store, and service availability in your country | An app may not be offered for the model, platform, or region |
| External streaming player | Player output settings, compatible HDMI port, cable, and every receiver, switch, or soundbar in the path | One unsupported HDMI 2.0 or HDCP 2.2 link can reduce a 4K title to 720p or 1080p |
This distinction also helps diagnose app behavior. If a service works in the TV’s native app but not through an external player, inspect the player’s output and HDMI chain. If it fails in both places, start with the network, account, service availability, and firmware.
Troubleshoot the most common setup failures
The TV will not join Wi-Fi
- Check that the selected network name is your normal home network rather than a guest network.
- Re-enter the password and test the signal with a phone in the same location.
- Restart the router and TV, then try again.
- Use Ethernet if the model supports it and the router is close enough.
- Install the TV’s firmware update when the TV can connect by another method, such as temporary phone tethering where supported.
An app cannot be found or installed
Search the TV’s official app interface, check the account and region selected during first-run setup, and install pending system updates. If the app is still absent, the service may not support that model, platform, or country. Use a compatible external player only after checking its own app and format support.
The source is stuck at 1080p or 720p
- Confirm the source is playing a title with a 4K version and that its output is not manually limited to 1080p.
- Connect it directly to the TV temporarily, bypassing a receiver, switch, splitter, or soundbar.
- Try an HDMI port documented for the required format.
- Enable the model-specific Enhanced, UHD Color, or equivalent input format.
- Check HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 support across every remaining device and cable.
- Update the TV and source, then power-cycle the complete chain.
HDR is missing
- Verify that the TV model supports the HDR format used by the source; Sony notes that not all 4K TVs support HDR.
- Play confirmed HDR content rather than relying on a menu or SDR video.
- Enable HDR or the enhanced HDMI signal format for the exact input, if the manual requires it.
- Check the source’s HDR output setting and every intermediary device.
- Test a direct connection to the TV before replacing a cable.
There is no sound from the soundbar
Check the physical port, selected TV output, soundbar input, mute state, and ARC/eARC or optical settings on both devices. Test the TV speakers to determine whether the problem is the source or the external audio path. If the manuals specify different supported formats, choose a simpler automatic or basic output temporarily and retest.
Use this final checklist
- The stand or wall mount is secure and ventilation is clear.
- The TV is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network and has completed its software update.
- The correct platform account is configured where required.
- Essential apps are installed and can play a test title.
- Each external device is powered, connected to the documented port, and assigned to the correct input.
- The source’s resolution and HDR status have been verified during playback.
- The soundbar or receiver uses a connection supported by both manuals and produces sound from built-in and HDMI sources.
- Picture and sound modes are comfortable in the actual room rather than chosen solely for maximum brightness.
If a problem remains, record the TV model, firmware version, source model, HDMI path, selected input, displayed resolution, HDR status, and any error message before contacting support. That information distinguishes a missing app, network fault, unsupported format, and defective connection far faster than simply reporting that “4K is not working.”
