To set up a Minecraft Forge server, use Minecraft: Java Edition, install the Java version required by your target Minecraft release, run the official Forge installer in a dedicated empty folder, start the generated server once, accept the EULA in eula.txt, and then add only mods that match the server and every player’s client. Players on the same computer can connect through localhost; players on another network usually need firewall and router configuration for Java’s default port, 25565.

The exact Forge build, Java runtime, mod versions, world settings, and number of players determine whether the server is stable. There is no authoritative one-size-fits-all RAM or CPU requirement, so treat performance as a measured configuration problem rather than a fixed specification.

What you need before installing Forge

Forge is a mod-loading platform for Minecraft: Java Edition. The official Minecraft server download guidance states that its server setup is compatible only with Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition. Decide the Minecraft version you intend to run before downloading anything; changing that version later can require a new Forge installation, different Java, and a separate world or mod set.

Choose one Minecraft version and Forge build

Every participant must use a compatible combination of Minecraft version, Forge version, and mod versions. Forge offers Recommended and Latest builds for a selected Minecraft release. A Latest build can contain newer features, but Forge warns that it may be less stable. For a long-running private server, start with a Recommended build unless a particular mod requires another build.

Install 64-bit Java that matches Minecraft

Install a 64-bit Java runtime or JDK that supports the release you selected. Verify what the server will actually call by opening a terminal or command prompt and running:

java -version

The reported major version must match Forge’s current compatibility table. The table published by MinecraftForge maps releases as follows:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Minecraft release Java version required by Forge’s table
26.1 and newer Java 25
1.20.6 through 1.21.11 Java 21
1.18 through 1.20.4 Java 17
1.17.1 Java 16
1.16.5 and older Java 8

Use the row for the exact Minecraft release, not merely the newest Java installed on your computer. If several Java versions are installed, the java command in the server’s launch script must resolve to the compatible one. A Java error mentioning an unsupported class version is a strong indication that the wrong runtime is being used.

Prepare a dedicated server folder

Create an empty folder used only for this server. A short path without special characters makes command-line troubleshooting easier, for example MinecraftForgeServer in a location you back up regularly. Keep the Forge installer, generated libraries, launch files, configuration, world, logs, and mods associated with this installation in that folder or in the subfolders Forge creates. Do not mix files from different Minecraft versions.

Install Forge as a dedicated server

1. Download the official installer for the exact release

On the Forge project site, select your Minecraft version and download the installer for that release. Check the version number on the download page before opening it. The installer is not interchangeable between Minecraft releases: a Forge installer for one release will not create a server for another.

2. Run the installer in server mode

  1. Open the Forge installer.
  2. Select the option to install a server (often labelled Install server).
  3. Choose the empty dedicated server folder you created.
  4. Allow the installer to download and place the required server libraries and launch files in that folder.
  5. Wait for the installer to report completion before closing it.

If you use a command line instead of the installer’s graphical interface, use the server-install option documented by the installer for that build and run it from a terminal. Do not move only one JAR out of the directory afterward; the generated libraries and launch configuration are part of the installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Check the generated launch files

Forge versions generate their own launch scripts or commands. Use the generated Windows or Linux/macOS command rather than guessing a server JAR name. Open the script in a text editor only when you need to confirm which Java executable or memory options it uses. Launch it from the server folder so relative paths resolve to the libraries and configuration files Forge created.

Start once, accept the EULA, and start again

First launch

From the server directory, run the generated launch command. The first run creates configuration files and normally stops when the Minecraft EULA has not been accepted. A server that exits at this stage is behaving as designed; it is waiting for the required file edit.

Edit eula.txt

  1. Open eula.txt in the server folder.
  2. Change the line eula=false to eula=true.
  3. Save the file without changing its name or extension.
  4. Run the same generated launch command again.

Accepting the EULA records your agreement for that server installation. If the file reverts to false or the process still stops, check that you edited the copy in the active server directory and that the file is writable.

Confirm a healthy startup

A successful start produces a server console and a new set of configuration files, logs, and a world directory. Wait until the console reports that the server is ready for players before attempting to connect. Stop it from the console’s normal stop command rather than closing the window, which gives the server a chance to save the world.

Add Forge mods without creating version conflicts

Run the newly installed Forge server without mods first. This gives you a known-good baseline and separates installation problems from mod problems.

Use matching versions everywhere

For each mod, verify all of the following:

  • The mod targets the same Minecraft release as the server.
  • The mod is built for Forge rather than a different mod loader.
  • The mod’s Forge compatibility range includes the Forge build you installed.
  • Every client has the same required mod files and compatible versions.
  • Required dependency mods are present on both the server or client as specified by the mod author.

There is no universal compatibility list. A modpack’s own documentation is the authority for its contents, dependencies, and order of installation. Do not copy a mods folder from an unrelated Minecraft release and expect Forge to convert it.

Install and test incrementally

  1. Stop the server cleanly and make a backup of the working folder, especially the world directory.
  2. Create a mods folder if the Forge installation has not already created one.
  3. Copy in a small, known-compatible set of mod files.
  4. Start the server and read the console for missing dependencies or rejected versions.
  5. Connect with a client carrying the same mod set.
  6. Add additional mods in groups small enough that you can identify the one causing a failure.

Keep client-only visual or interface mods off the dedicated server when their documentation says they are client-only. Conversely, a server-side gameplay mod may still require a matching client component. Follow each mod’s stated side and dependency requirements.

Connect to the server

Players on the host computer

Start Minecraft Java Edition with the matching Forge profile and select Multiplayer. On the computer running the server, connect to localhost or the host’s local address as appropriate. The server must already be running and listening before the client attempts to join.

Players on the same home network

Other devices in the home generally connect to the host computer’s private LAN address, such as an address shown by the operating system’s network settings. The address can change when the router renews a lease, so a local hostname or reserved DHCP address can make recurring connections easier. This traffic still has to pass the host computer’s firewall.

Friends outside the home network

Remote players usually need the host firewall and home router to allow Java’s default Minecraft port, 25565. The exact rule depends on the operating system, router, and whether the server uses a non-default port. Configure forwarding to the host computer’s private address, then allow the same port through the host firewall. Tell friends the public address and port, not the private LAN address.

Opening a port exposes a service to the internet. Use a strong server operator account, keep the operating system, Java runtime, Forge, and mods updated, and open only the port you actually need. If you do not understand your router’s forwarding and firewall controls, use a managed hosting arrangement or keep the server accessible only on your local network instead of exposing an untested machine.

Performance: why there is no universal RAM number

Forge server requirements vary with the number and type of mods, world-generation activity, simulation distance, view distance, redstone or entity density, and the number of concurrent players. The available evidence does not establish a universal RAM allocation, CPU model, or player limit that is valid for every Forge server.

Measure the workload you actually have

  • Begin with the memory settings generated by the server package or your existing Java launch script rather than copying a value from an unrelated modpack.
  • Watch for operating-system memory pressure, long garbage-collection pauses, and server tick delays while players explore and generate new chunks.
  • Reduce simulation or view distance and investigate high-entity areas before assuming that adding RAM will solve every lag problem.
  • Increase resources gradually, leaving enough memory for the operating system and other services on the host.

Record the mod list, world settings, and player count when evaluating a change. A configuration that works for two players in an established world may struggle when several players generate new terrain simultaneously.

Troubleshoot the most common failures

“Unsupported class version” or another Java launch error

Re-run java -version from the same environment used by the launch script and compare the result with Forge’s table. Install or select the required Java major version for the Minecraft release. If the script uses an absolute path to Java, changing the system default alone will not change the runtime it launches.

The server exits immediately

Check the console output in this order:

  1. Confirm that eula.txt contains eula=true in the active server folder.
  2. Run the generated command from the server directory, not from a shortcut whose working directory is elsewhere.
  3. Verify that Forge’s generated libraries and launch files were not moved, renamed, or partially deleted.
  4. Read the newest log for a missing dependency, invalid mod, or Java error.

A mod is rejected during startup

Read the error for the required Minecraft and Forge ranges, then remove or replace the file that does not match. Check dependencies before changing Java or network settings; a mod version conflict is unrelated to router configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The client cannot connect

First compare the client’s Minecraft version, Forge build, and mod files with the server. A failed connection can be caused by mismatched versions as well as a blocked network path. For local testing, use localhost on the host machine; for a LAN test, use the host’s private address. Only after version parity is confirmed should you inspect firewall rules, router forwarding, the selected port, and whether the server process is listening.

The server starts but the world is missing or appears reset

Stop the server, inspect the launch directory, and confirm that you started the same installation that contains the expected world folder. Launching a script from a different directory can create or load a different world. Restore a backup only after stopping the process and identifying the correct server folder.

Backups, updates, and safe maintenance

Back up before every risky change

Stop the server cleanly, copy the world and configuration directories to separate storage, and label the backup with the Minecraft version, Forge build, mod list, and date. Keep at least one backup that is not on the same disk as the live server. Test that an archive can actually be opened; a backup that was never checked is not a recovery plan.

Update one layer at a time

When updating, copy the existing server to a test directory. Change only one of Minecraft, Forge, the Java runtime, or the mod set at a time, then start the copy and inspect the logs. Keep the original installation untouched until players can join the test world and the new configuration has been backed up. World upgrades and mod removals can be irreversible, so read the release notes for every mod and Forge build before applying them to the live world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep access and permissions controlled

Run the server under a user account with only the file permissions it needs. Do not give unknown players operating-system access or access to the server folder. Review the whitelist and operator permissions in the server console, and remove old mod files rather than leaving multiple versions that can be loaded accidentally.

A repeatable setup checklist

  • Confirm the edition is Minecraft Java Edition.
  • Select one Minecraft release and a Forge Recommended or Latest build deliberately.
  • Install the Java major version listed by Forge for that release and verify it with java -version.
  • Create an empty, dedicated server directory.
  • Run the official Forge installer in server-install mode and keep its generated files together.
  • Launch once from that directory so Forge creates eula.txt and other files.
  • Change eula=false to eula=true, save, and launch again.
  • Join with an unmodded matching Forge client before adding mods.
  • Add compatible mods incrementally, keeping client and server versions aligned.
  • Use localhost for the host computer, a private LAN address for local-network players, and carefully configured firewall/router rules for remote players.
  • Back up the world before mod, Forge, Java, or Minecraft changes.
