Start by identifying the exact handheld. A Steam Deck formats a microSD card as ext4 (with case distinction removed), while ASUS documents NTFS for the ROG Ally family, including the ROG Xbox Ally. The operating system, formatting location and game-launcher steps therefore depend on the device. Back up anything you need before formatting: the process erases the card.

This guide covers the documented Steam Deck, ROG Ally and ROG Xbox Ally (RC73) workflows, then shows how to choose the card as a game destination and how to avoid compatibility mistakes.

Identify your handheld before touching the card

Do not begin with the card’s advertised capacity or with a format copied from another handheld. First check the model name in the device’s system information, packaging or support page. “Handheld gaming PC” describes several platforms with different operating systems and file-system requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Steam Deck: Valve’s SteamOS workflow formats an inserted card from Steam itself. The official Steam Deck FAQ specifies ext4 with case distinction removed.
  • ROG Ally: ASUS’s published instructions use NTFS and format the card in Windows on a laptop or desktop before inserting it into the handheld.
  • ROG Xbox Ally (RC73): ASUS documents NTFS and provides formatting routes from either the Xbox full-screen experience or the Windows desktop.

If your handheld is a different model, do not assume either set of steps applies unchanged. Find that manufacturer’s support page and confirm the supported card type, capacity and speed before formatting.

Prepare the card and your data

  • Copy photos, documents, save backups or other files you want to keep to another drive or cloud location.
  • Check the exact handheld specification for maximum capacity and required or recommended speed. The Steam Deck figure below is a product specification for that device, not a universal limit for handheld gaming PCs.
  • Have a compatible card reader available if your model’s instructions require a computer. A USB microSD reader is useful for the ROG Ally computer-based route, but it is not required for every workflow.
  • Close applications that might be reading or writing the card before you remove it from a computer or handheld.

Formatting and choosing an install destination are two separate jobs. Formatting prepares the card’s file system for the device; it does not automatically tell each launcher to put games there. After formatting, check the relevant launcher’s storage or install settings and select the card, library or folder before starting a download.

A card reader is only a convenience when the documented workflow calls for a computer and the computer has no built-in microSD slot. The ROG Xbox Ally also has a documented route through its own Windows desktop or Xbox full-screen experience. A reader is not a requirement for the Steam Deck’s on-device format process.

Steam Deck, ROG Ally and ROG Xbox Ally: the documented differences

Device path Officially documented format Where formatting starts How game storage is selected Capacity information in the cited material
Steam Deck ext4, with case distinction removed Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card Use Steam’s available install-destination controls after formatting; the cited basic-use material does not provide a precise library-folder sequence for Deck. Valve’s 2022 booklet states up to 2 TB of additional microSD storage for Steam Deck.
ROG Ally NTFS in ASUS’s guide Format the card in Windows on a laptop or desktop, then insert it into the Ally. Add the card as a Steam Library Folder or select it in the installation flow of another launcher. Not stated in the cited ASUS instructions.
ROG Xbox Ally (RC73) NTFS Format from the Xbox full-screen experience or Windows desktop. Create or select a folder on the card, then choose that folder for game installs. Not stated in the cited ASUS FAQ, last updated 2025-11-19.

The main practical distinction is not just the name of the file system. Steam Deck’s documented route starts in SteamOS on the handheld, while the ROG Ally guide starts with Windows formatting on another computer. ROG Xbox Ally owners can use either of the two documented on-device environments. In all cases, the launcher’s destination selection remains a step after the card has been prepared.

How do I format a microSD card for Steam Deck?

Steam Deck performs the format on the device. The operation removes the existing contents, so complete the backup before opening the format command.

Format the card in SteamOS

  1. Insert the microSD card into the card slot on the bottom surface of the Steam Deck.
  2. Open Steam.
  3. Go to Settings > System > Format SD card.
  4. Read the on-screen warning and confirm only after you have copied away anything important.
  5. Let SteamOS finish. Do not remove the card while the format is in progress.

Steam Support gives this entry point in its “Steam Deck – Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide.” The format is intended to prepare the inserted card for the Deck rather than leave it as a general-purpose Windows data card.

Understand the Deck’s ext4 format

The official Steam Deck FAQ says microSD cards use ext4 with case distinction removed. That is a Linux file-system choice. You should not expect a Windows computer to treat the card like an ordinary NTFS game drive, and you should not reformat it as NTFS merely because another handheld uses NTFS.

If you move the card between operating systems, plan around that difference. A card prepared for Steam Deck is not automatically interchangeable with a card prepared for a Windows-based handheld. Reformatting to change formats erases the existing contents again.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This also explains why a Windows format prompt is not a useful repair step for a Deck card: Windows may not recognize its ext4 contents as a familiar drive. If the card holds games or files you want, cancel rather than approving a format. Use the Steam Deck workflow for a card intended for the Deck, and consult current Steam Support guidance if SteamOS does not recognize it.

Choose the card when installing games

After formatting, select the microSD card as the installation destination whenever Steam presents a storage-location choice. Steam Deck also has a Desktop Mode that Steam Support describes as working like a normal PC for browsing, downloading and installing applications. The basic-use material cited for this guide does not specify a tested sequence for creating or adding a Steam library folder on the Deck, so do not rely on a Windows library-folder tutorial as if it were a Deck instruction. If Steam does not offer the card as a destination, check that the card completed formatting and consult the current Steam Support instructions for your SteamOS version.

Before confirming an installation, take a moment to verify the selected storage location in Steam. Choosing the card for one install does not necessarily change every launcher’s default destination, so check again when installing through another app. If you have not yet seen a destination selector, do not assume the card has become the default simply because it is inserted.

How do I install games to an SD card on my ROG Ally?

ASUS’s guide, titled “How to Install Games to an SD Card on your ROG Ally or ROG Xbox Ally,” uses a Windows-compatible NTFS card. Back up the card first because formatting deletes all files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Format an ROG Ally card on a Windows computer

  1. Insert the microSD card into a Windows laptop or desktop. Use a USB microSD reader if the computer has no card slot.
  2. Open File Explorer and locate the card’s newly mounted volume. Confirm that you have selected the removable card, not an internal drive.
  3. Right-click the card’s volume and choose Format.
  4. Give the volume a label if you want one, then set File system to NTFS.
  5. Start the format and wait for Windows to report completion.
  6. Safely remove the card from the computer and insert it into the ROG Ally.

These are ASUS’s published computer-based steps. The guide does not establish a universal capacity or speed value for every ROG Ally model, so verify those specifications for your exact device before buying or formatting a card.

Take extra care at the volume-selection step. Windows may show multiple drives, and formatting the wrong one can erase unrelated files. Identify the card by its removable-drive entry and capacity, and stop if you are uncertain which volume is the microSD card. The optional volume label can make the card easier to identify later, but it does not replace checking the destination in each launcher.

Create a destination folder when the launcher asks for one

After insertion, a launcher may ask you to choose a drive or folder rather than simply naming the card. Create a dedicated folder on the card if prompted. Keeping game data in a clearly named folder makes the destination easier to recognize when several drives appear.

Add the card to Steam

For Steam on the ROG Ally, ASUS documents this path:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Steam and choose Steam > Settings.
  2. Open Downloads.
  3. Select Steam Library Folders.
  4. Click the plus sign to add a library location.
  5. Select the microSD card and confirm Add.
  6. When installing a game, choose that library on the card in Steam’s destination selector.

Adding the library location makes the card available to Steam; it is still worth checking the destination for an individual game before you begin its installation. If Steam offers more than one library, choose the one on the microSD card rather than relying on a previous selection.

If the card is missing from the list, return to File Explorer and confirm that Windows assigns it a volume and that the format is NTFS. Do not format the wrong disk while troubleshooting.

Install from Xbox, Battle.net, Epic, EA, Ubisoft Connect or GOG

ASUS states that Xbox, Battle.net, Epic, EA, Ubisoft Connect and GOG each expose a destination or folder choice during their installation flows. Start the install, open the location or browse control, and select the NTFS card or the game-data folder you created on it. The exact label can differ by launcher version; the important decision is the destination shown before the download begins.

If a launcher remembers an earlier location, review it rather than assuming it will switch automatically when you insert the card. Choosing the card in one launcher does not set the install location for the others. Confirm the target folder shown by the app before accepting the download.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ROG Xbox Ally full-screen experience

For the ROG Xbox Ally (RC73), ASUS documents two ways to prepare the card:

  • Xbox full-screen experience: use its storage or formatting controls to format the inserted card as NTFS.
  • Windows desktop: use the same File Explorer format route described for the ROG Ally, selecting NTFS.

After formatting, choose “Choose a folder for your games” in the Xbox full-screen experience. Create a new folder on the card or select an existing one, then confirm it as the game destination. This folder-selection step is separate from merely inserting the card; the launcher still needs to know where to place game files.

ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally FAQ says to create a new folder to store game data after formatting. A dedicated folder gives the Xbox experience an explicit location to use and helps distinguish game files from other contents on the card. The FAQ was last updated 2025-11-19, so check the current ASUS instructions if the labels or menus on your device differ.

Capacity and speed: verify the exact model

Steam Deck’s 2 TB figure is device-specific

Valve’s 2022 Steam Deck booklet states that the console supports up to 2 TB of additional storage with a microSD card. That is a Steam Deck product specification, not evidence that every handheld gaming PC accepts 2 TB cards. Treat it as a Deck-specific reference and check current documentation for any different model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer an Ally limit from the Deck

The ASUS instructions cited here explain the NTFS workflow but do not state a single capacity ceiling for all ROG Ally-family devices. Confirm the limit for your exact Ally or ROG Xbox Ally revision. A card can be physically large enough to fit and still fall outside the device’s supported capacity or speed range.

Speed labels need a device match

Choose a card whose speed class is supported by the handheld’s specification. The cited support pages do not publish a benchmark or a universal minimum speed for this guide, so no one speed number should be presented as valid for every model. If a manufacturer lists a required class, match that class rather than relying on a retailer’s generic “gaming” label.

For a purchase, treat compatibility, capacity and speed as three separate checks. A card can fit physically yet exceed a device’s documented capacity, or have a speed rating that does not match the model’s requirements. The cited specifications do not establish a universal recommended card model or price, so there is no reason to choose by a “gaming” marketing claim alone. Verify the exact device support page before buying; a reader is an optional accessory only if you need the computer-based formatting route and lack a built-in slot.

Troubleshoot the common setup failures

The handheld does not see the card

  • Power down or follow the device’s normal removal procedure, reseat the card and start again.
  • Check the card in the format expected by the device: ext4 for Steam Deck’s documented workflow, NTFS for the ASUS Ally-family instructions.
  • On an ROG Ally, verify in Windows that the card has a mounted volume after formatting.
  • Confirm that the card’s capacity and speed meet the exact model’s support page.

The Steam Deck format command is unavailable

  • Confirm that the card is fully inserted in the bottom slot.
  • Restart Steam and check Settings > System again.
  • If the card still is not offered, use current Steam Support troubleshooting for your SteamOS release rather than applying NTFS instructions from a Windows handheld.

The launcher downloads to internal storage

  • Open the launcher’s storage, library or installation-location control before confirming the download.
  • On Steam for ROG Ally, add the card under Steam > Settings > Downloads > Steam Library Folders.
  • On ROG Xbox Ally, use Choose a folder for your games and select the folder on the card.
  • For other launchers, look for the destination-folder prompt in the installation flow; selecting the card after the download starts may not move files already installed.

If you discover the wrong destination only after an installation has begun, pause and check that launcher’s current options rather than assuming that changing the default will move existing files. This guide’s documented steps concern selecting a location before installation; they do not describe a tested method for relocating an already-installed game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows asks to format a Steam Deck card

That prompt reflects the difference between ext4 and Windows-oriented file systems. Do not accept a reformat if the card contains Deck games or files you need. Reformatting changes the file system and erases the contents. Keep the card with the platform whose file system it uses, or back up the contents before deliberately preparing it for a different device.

A game folder is not accepted

Make sure you selected a folder on the formatted card rather than an empty drive entry that the launcher cannot use. On the ROG Xbox Ally, create the folder through the documented destination prompt. On Steam for ROG Ally, add a library folder first, then select that library during installation.

Moving a card between handhelds

A single card is not a plug-and-play library for these platforms. Steam Deck’s ext4 format and the Ally family’s NTFS workflow are different, and formatting the card for the second device removes the first device’s contents. If you need to change platforms, copy anything important elsewhere, format the card for the destination handheld, and reinstall or restore games using that platform’s launcher.

Likewise, a card that works in one Ally-family model should not be treated as proof of compatibility with another Windows handheld. Recheck the target model’s support page for file system, capacity and speed requirements before making the change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think of a format change as preparing the card anew, not as converting an existing game library for effortless reuse. First preserve personal files you need, then follow the destination device’s official format process and set the installation location in its launcher. If you are not ready to erase the contents, do not start the format.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I format a microSD card for Steam Deck?

Insert it into the slot on the bottom of the Deck, then open Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card and follow the prompts. Back up anything you need first: formatting erases the card. Steam Deck’s documented format is ext4 with case distinction removed.

How do I install games to an SD card on my ROG Ally?

Format the card as NTFS using ASUS’s documented Windows-computer workflow, insert it into the Ally, and add it in Steam through Steam > Settings > Downloads > Steam Library Folders > plus sign. For Xbox, Battle.net, Epic, EA, Ubisoft Connect and GOG, choose the card or a folder on it in the launcher’s installation flow.

Will a Steam Deck microSD card work as-is in a ROG Ally?

Do not assume so. Steam Deck uses ext4, while ASUS documents NTFS for the ROG Ally family. Preparing the card for the other device requires a different format and erases its contents, so back up files before changing platforms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does formatting a microSD card delete its files?

Yes. Back up photos, documents, save backups and any other files you want to keep before formatting. Confirm the selected volume carefully, especially when using Windows, so you do not format the wrong drive.

Can I use a 2 TB microSD card in any handheld gaming PC?

No universal limit is established here. Valve’s 2022 Steam Deck booklet states up to 2 TB of additional microSD storage for Steam Deck specifically. Check the capacity and speed specifications for your exact handheld model.

Do I need a USB microSD card reader?

Not for every setup. Steam Deck’s documented format process happens on the device. ASUS’s ROG Ally guide formats the card on a Windows computer, so a USB reader can help if that computer lacks a microSD slot. The ROG Xbox Ally also has documented formatting routes from its Windows desktop or Xbox full-screen experience.

The Bottom Line

Identify the exact handheld, back up the card, and use that model’s documented format: ext4 through SteamOS for Steam Deck, or NTFS for the ASUS ROG Ally family. Then choose the card or a folder on it in each game launcher before installing. Verify capacity and speed against the specific device rather than treating one handheld’s limits as universal.
