To add a Matter-over-Thread smart plug to Apple Home, you need the powered plug, its Matter setup code, an iPhone with the current Home app, and a Thread-enabled Apple home hub or compatible third-party Thread border router. In Home, tap Add Accessory, scan the Matter QR code (or enter the 11- or 21-digit code), then assign the plug a name and room.
If the plug is already paired with another Matter app, do not simply reuse the original commissioning scan. Generate a new pairing code in that app, then choose More Options in Home and select the accessory. The sections below cover the complete setup and the fixes for the most common Thread and pairing errors.
What Matter over Thread means in Apple Home
Matter is the interoperability standard that lets a supported accessory be commissioned into compatible smart-home ecosystems. Thread is the network technology used by this type of plug. Apple describes Thread as “a low-power Internet Protocol-based mesh networking technology” in its ThreadNetwork documentation. In a Thread mesh, Thread-enabled devices can forward packets to one another; the plug is not using Wi-Fi for its device connection.
Apple Home still needs a device that connects the Thread mesh to your home network and Apple Home services. That role is provided by a Thread-enabled home hub or a compatible third-party Thread border router. Matter and Thread are therefore different parts of the setup: Matter defines how the accessory is identified and controlled, while Thread supplies the local low-power network.

What you need before pairing
A Thread-capable hub or border router
Apple lists these Thread-enabled Apple devices for Thread accessories:
- HomePod mini
- HomePod (2nd generation)
- Apple TV 4K (2nd generation)
- Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) with Wi-Fi + Ethernet
A compatible third-party Thread border router can also provide the Thread network. Apple’s current requirements and supported-device guidance are maintained on its Thread Border Router Required or Needs Thread Network page. Check that page and the plug maker’s instructions for your exact operating-system and hardware combination because support changes with software versions.
An iPhone, the Home app and a setup code
Use an iPhone signed in to the Apple account that manages your home, with the Home app available. Keep the Matter setup code nearby. Depending on the product, the code is printed as a QR code or as an 11- or 21-digit number. It may be on the plug, its packaging or the supplied documentation. Apple’s Set up accessories with Home on iPhone guide describes both scanning and manual entry.

First-time setup: add the plug directly to Apple Home
- Confirm Thread support. Verify that the product listing or manual explicitly says Matter over Thread, not merely Matter. Confirm that your home includes one of the Thread-enabled Apple devices listed above or a compatible third-party border router. If you do not have that infrastructure, resolve it before attempting setup.
- Power the accessory. Plug it into the wall, wait for its indicator or startup behavior, and follow any model-specific instruction for putting it into pairing mode. Do not remove the label containing the setup code.
- Open the add-accessory flow. In the Home app on iPhone, tap Home, then tap Add Accessory. Apple also exposes the same action from the Add button. The exact button placement can vary with the iOS release; use the current labels shown in the app.
- Scan or enter the Matter code. Point the camera at the Matter QR code when Home displays the scanner. If the camera cannot read it, choose the manual-entry option and type the 11- or 21-digit Matter code exactly as printed. Distinguish similar characters and do not insert spaces or punctuation unless the app displays them.
- Approve the accessory and network prompts. Home may ask you to confirm that the accessory is being added to this home and may show Thread or local-network permissions. Accept the prompts required for commissioning, and keep the iPhone and plug powered during the process.
- Choose a room. Select the room where the physical plug is located. Room assignment controls where it appears in Home and makes room-based scenes and automations easier to organize.
- Give it a recognizable name. Use a name that describes both the object and its location, such as “Desk lamp” or “Kitchen coffee maker.” Apple says the accessory name can be used with Siri, so avoid names that sound like another device in the same room.
- Finish the manufacturer prompts. If Home or the manufacturer’s app offers firmware or accessory setup steps, complete them according to the model’s instructions. Do not assume that a generic Matter code replaces a required product-specific update.
- Test local control. Tap the new tile in Home to switch the plug off and on. A successful tile response confirms that the accessory was commissioned and is reachable at that moment; it does not by itself prove that remote control or automations are configured.
Adding a plug that is already in another Matter app
Matter allows one accessory to be shared with additional ecosystems. A plug that has already been commissioned in another Matter app normally needs a new pairing code generated by that app. The original first-commissioning code is not necessarily the code used for the second ecosystem.
- Open the app that currently controls the plug.
- Find the accessory’s settings and choose its option for adding or sharing it with another Matter ecosystem. The wording differs by manufacturer.
- Have that app display or generate a fresh Matter pairing code.
- In Apple Home, tap Add Accessory, then choose More Options when the accessory is not being discovered as a new device.
- Select the existing accessory, enter or scan the newly generated code, and complete Home’s room and naming prompts.
Apple documents this cross-ecosystem process in Pair and manage your Matter accessories. Matter pairings are synchronized across Apple devices through iCloud Keychain, so an accessory added to one compatible Apple device can be available to the others using the same Apple account and home.
Do you need a HomePod mini?
No. A HomePod mini is one supported option, not the only one. HomePod (2nd generation), Apple TV 4K (2nd generation), Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) with Wi-Fi + Ethernet, or a compatible third-party Thread border router can provide the required Thread path. Check Apple’s Thread requirements for the current list before buying additional hardware.

Apple also describes a limited case in which a compatible Thread-enabled iPhone can pair and manage a Thread accessory locally without a home hub. Its support guidance identifies iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or later running iOS 18 for that alert scenario, subject to accessory and software compatibility. For remote control, notifications and automations, Apple directs you to set up a Thread-enabled home hub or use a compatible third-party border router. Treat the iPhone-only path as a local commissioning option, not a replacement for the home infrastructure needed for those features.

Why Apple Home says “Thread Border Router Required” or “Needs Thread Network”
Those alerts indicate that the accessory requires Thread but the Apple device or home does not currently provide a usable Thread network. The message is about network capability, not an incorrect Matter code.
- Check that a HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd generation), supported Apple TV 4K, or compatible third-party Thread border router is powered and connected.
- Verify that the model is actually Matter over Thread. A product described only as Matter may use a different transport.
- Update the hub, iPhone and accessory firmware when the manufacturer provides an update that lists Thread or Matter compatibility.
- Return to Home’s add-accessory flow after the Thread device is available. If the alert persists, consult Apple’s Thread Border Router Required or Needs Thread Network article and the accessory manual for model-specific requirements.
When the plug is not found or setup fails
The scanner cannot read the QR code
- Increase the light on the printed label without creating glare.
- Hold the iPhone steady and fill the scanning frame with the entire code.
- Use manual entry and type the 11- or 21-digit code exactly.
- If the code is damaged or missing, check the packaging and documentation before contacting the manufacturer; do not guess a replacement code.
Home cannot discover the powered plug
- Confirm that the plug is receiving power and is in its pairing state.
- Keep Bluetooth enabled if Apple’s Thread troubleshooting prompt requests it.
- Move the iPhone closer during commissioning and temporarily avoid placing the plug behind large appliances or metal obstructions.
- Confirm that the iPhone, Home app and accessory firmware meet the current requirements. Apple notes that some battery-powered Thread accessories require a manufacturer firmware update for iOS 18 compatibility; that particular note may not apply to a mains-powered plug, but the plug’s own firmware still matters.
- Check that a Thread border router is present if Home reports that one is required.
The code is rejected
Re-enter the code slowly, checking every digit. Make sure you are using the Matter code for this accessory rather than a Wi-Fi password, a product serial number or a code generated by a different app. For an accessory already commissioned elsewhere, generate a new sharing code in the original app and use Home’s More Options path.
Pairing stops partway through
Leave the plug powered while Home is processing the request. If the accessory has a manufacturer app, open it after the failed attempt and check for a firmware update or a message explaining that the plug must be placed back into pairing mode. Follow the model’s reset instructions only when the manufacturer documents them; a reset can remove the existing Matter fabric membership and any settings already stored in the plug.

| Decision area | What to verify for a Matter-over-Thread plug | Why it matters in Apple Home |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol | Explicit wording such as “Matter over Thread,” not just “Matter.” | Thread accessories need a Thread-capable home hub or border router. |
| Apple Home support | Apple Home listed among supported Matter ecosystems and a current setup procedure. | A Matter logo alone does not document the exact Apple Home flow for every model. |
| Thread infrastructure | Whether your home already has a supported HomePod, Apple TV 4K or third-party Thread border router. | Buying the plug without the network path can produce the “Thread Border Router Required” alert. |
| Electrical region | Plug shape, voltage, frequency and certification for your country. | A Matter radio standard does not make a plug electrically interchangeable worldwide. |
| Load rating | The manufacturer’s maximum current and supported load types. | The rating determines which lamp, appliance or charger can be connected safely. |
| Physical dimensions | Width, depth and whether the design blocks the neighboring outlet. | A physically oversized plug can make part of a wall outlet unusable. |
| Energy monitoring | Whether metering is included and which measurements the manufacturer documents. | Choose metering only if you need energy data; basic on/off control does not imply it. |
| Code storage | Where the QR code and manual code are printed and how replacement codes are obtained. | You may need the code again when sharing the accessory with another Matter app. |
No particular model, price or measured performance is established here. Verify current availability, regional electrical specifications and the exact load rating on the listing and manual for the product you intend to install.
Organizing and operating the plug after setup
Use names that work for people and Siri
Keep the name short, unique within the home and tied to the controlled object. If two plugs control lamps, include their locations rather than relying on “Plug 1” and “Plug 2.” Room assignment and naming can be changed later in the accessory settings without re-pairing the device.
Separate local pairing from remote features
A successful local tile response shows that Home can reach the plug at that time. Remote control when you are away, notifications and automations depend on the Thread-enabled home-hub or border-router setup described by Apple. If those features are absent, check the home hub path rather than repeatedly scanning the code.

Keep the setup information
Store the printed code and the model’s instructions in a safe place. The code is useful when moving the plug to another Matter ecosystem or recovering from a replacement process. If the accessory is already managed by another app, use that app’s generated sharing code instead of assuming the original label is sufficient.
