A Mac Studio can drive a 4K gaming display, but the correct refresh rate depends on the Studio generation, chip configuration, number of active displays, monitor input, and cable path. Set up the hardware first, then enable macOS gaming features and verify each game’s Mac support. A 4K/240 Hz output specification describes the signal the Mac can send—not the frame rate a game will render.
The reliable process is: identify your exact Mac Studio, choose a monitor by its 3840 × 2160 refresh-rate specification, connect it directly when required, select the mode in macOS, enable Game Mode where eligible, and test the game at settings that produce a stable result.
What you need before connecting anything
- A Mac Studio with Apple silicon and its exact model year and chip identified.
- A monitor that explicitly supports the refresh rate you want at 3840 × 2160, not merely a higher refresh rate at a lower resolution.
- A compatible HDMI, USB-C, Thunderbolt or DisplayPort cable path. The monitor input and Mac Studio output must support the same mode.
- A game with a native Mac release or clearly documented macOS support.
- macOS Sonoma 14 or later if you want Game Mode.
Display specifications are model-specific. Apple’s current connection guide covers M5 Max and M5 Ultra systems and warns that older Mac Studio models have different limits. Treat the model table for your machine as authoritative rather than applying a single 4K number to every Studio.
1. Identify your Mac Studio model and display limits
Find the chip and model year
- Open the Apple menu.
- Choose About This Mac.
- Record the chip name, such as M5 Max or M5 Ultra, and the model year shown there.
- Use those details to open the matching Mac Studio technical specifications and display-connection guidance from Apple.
This step matters because the maximum 4K refresh rate changes with the generation and with the number of displays running at the same time. The number printed on a monitor cannot override the Mac’s own display limit.

Current M5 examples
Apple’s current specifications list a single display at up to 4K and 240 Hz for specified M5 Max configurations. The same documentation gives different limits when several displays are active. For example, an M5 Max five-display arrangement includes one 5K/60 Hz HDMI display alongside four specified Thunderbolt displays; that is not equivalent to running one 4K/240 Hz screen.
For M5 Ultra, Apple lists up to four displays at 4K/240 Hz, or up to eight displays at lower specified rates. Read the complete table for the exact port and display combination before planning a multi-monitor setup.
Older Mac Studio generations
The Apple HDMI overview says Mac Studio models introduced in 2023 or later can connect an HDMI display at up to 4K/240 Hz in the listed conditions. Earlier generations have lower listed limits. If your Studio predates 2023, look up its technical-specification page instead of assuming that 240 Hz is available.

Shop for the mode you intend to use: 3840 × 2160 at a particular refresh rate. A monitor’s headline maximum may apply only to a lower resolution, a particular input, or a special overclock setting.
| Check | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| 4K refresh rate | Maximum refresh can vary by resolution. | The monitor’s manual or specifications must state the refresh rate at 3840 × 2160. |
| Input type | HDMI, DisplayPort and USB-C inputs can have different bandwidth limits. | Confirm that the selected input supports your intended 4K mode. |
| Connection path | Docks and adapters can change what modes are available. | Check the Mac port, cable, adapter or dock, and monitor input as one chain. |
| Variable refresh rate | VRR can synchronize refresh with changing game frame rates. | Confirm VRR support on both the Mac configuration and monitor, and that the chosen connection carries it. |
| HDR | HDR requires support from the display and the complete signal path. | Check the monitor’s HDR mode and whether macOS exposes it for that connection. |
Apple lists VRR and HDR support in the current M5 Max technical specifications, but those features are not guaranteed by the Mac alone. The monitor, input, cable and selected mode must also support them.
3. Connect the monitor directly for the highest HDMI mode
Direct HDMI connection
For HDMI 4K/240 Hz, connect the monitor directly to the Mac Studio’s built-in HDMI port with a cable rated for the required mode. Apple explicitly says adapters are not supported for HDMI at the top listed resolutions and refresh rates. Do not place a USB-C dock, video adapter or signal converter between the Mac and monitor when targeting HDMI 4K/240 Hz.

- Power on the monitor and select that input in its on-screen menu.
USB-C, Thunderbolt and DisplayPort paths
USB-C and Thunderbolt ports can carry display output, including a DisplayPort signal through a compatible cable or adapter. The achievable resolution and refresh rate still depend on the exact Mac configuration, the monitor input and the accessory. Apple’s guidance recommends checking the display documentation for the correct cable or adapter category.

If you need DisplayPort, use a cable or adapter whose specifications explicitly cover 3840 × 2160 at your target refresh rate. A physically compatible plug is not proof that the bandwidth or feature set is sufficient.
4. Select 4K and the refresh rate in macOS
- Open System Settings.
- Select Displays.
- Click the external monitor you want to configure.
- Choose a resolution that corresponds to 3840 × 2160, if that is the monitor’s native 4K mode.
- Open the refresh-rate control and select a rate supported by the Mac, connection and display.
- Apply the choice and check the monitor’s information panel to confirm the active signal.
Start with the highest mode that all three components support. If 240 Hz is absent, do not force it by guessing. Recheck the Mac Studio model, the number of active displays, the monitor input selection and the cable or adapter specification. A lower rate such as 120 Hz may be the correct maximum for that particular setup.
If the expected option is missing
- Disconnect other displays temporarily and check whether the single-display limit is higher.
- Verify that the monitor is connected to the intended HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C input; some monitors reserve their highest mode for only one input.
- Remove a dock or adapter and test a direct connection.
- Replace a cable that is not specified for the desired 4K refresh rate.
- Check the monitor’s on-screen menu for a bandwidth, enhanced-mode or high-refresh setting.
- Confirm that macOS and the monitor firmware are current enough for the documented mode.
5. Turn on Game Mode when the game qualifies
Game Mode is available on Apple silicon when the Mac runs macOS Sonoma 14 or later and the game supports macOS full-screen mode. Apple Support says Game Mode “optimises your gaming experience by giving your game the highest priority access to your CPU and GPU, lowering usage for background tasks.” Apple also documents doubled Bluetooth sampling for supported wireless accessories.
- Launch the game.
- Switch the game to macOS full-screen mode using its own video or display settings.
- Open the Game menu or the Game Overlay when macOS presents it.
- Check that Game Mode is enabled.
Game Mode changes scheduling priority; it is not a promise of a specific frame rate. If a game is running in a window or does not support macOS full-screen mode, the feature may not be available.

Do not treat Game Porting Toolkit as a consumer compatibility list
Apple describes Game Porting Toolkit as developer-facing tooling for evaluating compatibility and performance and for porting games to Apple platforms. Its existence does not establish that a particular Windows game will install, launch or work correctly for an ordinary Mac owner. Verify support for each title separately.
Windows-only games
A Windows release should be considered unsupported on macOS unless the publisher documents a Mac version or a tested compatibility route. Even when a translation layer can start a game, updates, launchers, copy protection, multiplayer services and anti-cheat software can prevent reliable play. Check the game publisher’s current documentation and community reports for the exact title and version rather than extrapolating from another game.
7. Tune the game for a stable 4K experience
Set the game’s own resolution to 3840 × 2160 first, then choose a refresh-rate or frame-cap option if the title provides one. Begin with the default graphics preset and change one setting at a time. Texture quality, shadows, reflections, volumetric effects and anti-aliasing are common controls that can trade image quality for steadier frame delivery.
- Use the game’s built-in frame counter or a trusted monitoring tool to observe actual frame rate and frame-time consistency.
- Keep the monitor at a refresh rate the game can use consistently; a 240 Hz signal does not require the game to produce 240 frames per second.
- If frame pacing is uneven, try a lower in-game frame cap or refresh rate before reducing every visual setting.
- Test demanding scenes, not just menus or quiet areas.
- Record the exact Mac chip, memory configuration, macOS version, game version and settings when comparing results.
The official Apple material covering display output, Game Mode and Game Porting Toolkit does not publish title-specific Mac Studio 4K frame-rate benchmarks. Do not infer gaming performance from the display-output ceiling.
Mac Studio display configurations that need extra care
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| One 4K gaming monitor | Use the model-specific single-display limit and select the highest mode supported by the complete connection. |
| Several 4K monitors | Use Apple’s multi-display table; the limit for one display may not apply when other displays are active. |
| M5 Max with five displays | Account for the documented combination that includes a 5K/60 Hz HDMI display and four specified Thunderbolt displays. |
| M5 Ultra with up to four 4K/240 Hz displays | Confirm that every display and connection supports the intended mode; lower-rate limits apply to larger display counts. |
| Older than 2023 | Use the older model’s Apple technical specifications; the current 4K/240 HDMI statement does not automatically apply. |
Common setup problems and fixes
The monitor works but only shows 60 Hz
Check whether the monitor’s selected input supports high refresh at 4K, whether the cable is rated for that mode, and whether another display is changing the Mac’s available configuration. Test a direct connection and select the refresh rate under System Settings > Displays.
4K is available but 240 Hz is not
Confirm that your Mac Studio generation is one of the models Apple lists for 4K/240 Hz, then check the number of active displays. For HDMI, remove adapters and docks because Apple excludes them from the top HDMI resolution and refresh-rate modes. If the model or connection is not eligible, choose the highest rate Apple lists for that configuration.

VRR or HDR is missing
Enable the feature in the monitor’s on-screen controls, then verify that the monitor input, cable and macOS mode support it. A monitor may advertise VRR or HDR while restricting those features to a particular input or refresh range.

Check that the Mac uses Apple silicon, macOS is Sonoma 14 or later, and the game is in macOS full-screen mode. A windowed game or a title without the required full-screen support may not expose Game Mode.
The game launches but performs poorly
First separate signal capability from rendering performance. The Mac may output a 4K/240 Hz signal while the game renders far fewer frames. Confirm that the title is supported on Mac, observe actual frame times, reduce the most expensive graphics settings, and use benchmarks for the exact chip and game rather than a display specification.
Can a Mac Studio run games in 4K?
It can send a 4K signal when the specific Studio model, display count, connection and monitor support that mode. Whether a particular game is enjoyable at 4K depends on that game’s Mac support and rendering workload. Apple’s display tables establish output capability, not a universal gaming benchmark or guaranteed 4K frame rate.
What refresh rate can a Mac Studio output at 4K?
Apple’s current M5 Max and M5 Ultra documentation lists configurations reaching 4K/240 Hz, while Mac Studio models introduced in 2023 or later are listed in Apple’s HDMI overview as supporting up to 4K/240 Hz under specified direct-connection conditions. Older generations and multi-display arrangements have different ceilings. Use the exact model-and-display-count table and verify the input and cable before selecting a rate.
