Yes—you can run local AI models offline on a Mac mini M6, provided you download the model files and install the software while the Mac is still online. For a compact home hub, choose memory and storage for the models and documents you expect to use: the M6 tops out at 32GB of unified memory and 2TB of internal SSD storage. Local inference keeps prompts and model processing on the Mac, but it does not by itself guarantee that the computer or every app makes no network connections.
Which Mac mini configuration fits a local AI hub?
Apple announced the M6 and M5 Pro Mac mini on August 25, 2026, with availability beginning September 22. The M6 is the less expensive option for a compact local setup; the M5 Pro is the more capable choice if you need more unified memory or internal storage. Apple’s U.S. launch prices were $899 for the M6 and $1,699 for the M5 Pro. Those are announced U.S. starting prices, not a guarantee of current pricing or availability in your region.
| Configuration | Unified memory | Internal SSD | Thunderbolt | U.S. announced starting price | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mac mini M6 | 16GB standard; configurable to 24GB or 32GB | 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB | Thunderbolt 4 | $899 | Compact hub and local inference where the M6’s memory ceiling and storage options suit the planned workload |
| Mac mini M5 Pro | 24GB standard; configurable to 48GB or 64GB | 512GB to 8TB | Thunderbolt 5 | $1,699 | Workloads that benefit from a higher memory ceiling, more internal model storage, or heavier concurrent use |

When the 32GB M6 makes sense
If you want the M6 specifically, the 32GB configuration gives you the most unified memory Apple offers for it. Unified memory is shared by macOS, applications, and the model runtime, so the model does not get the whole amount. How much memory a model needs depends on factors such as its architecture, quantization, context length, runtime, and concurrent workload. Apple’s specifications do not establish a model-size or speed table for the M6, so do not treat a particular model as guaranteed to fit or run comfortably.
#1 Best Overall
- Apple-designed M1 chip for a giant leap in CPU, GPU, and machine learning performance
- 8-core CPU packs up to 3x faster performance to fly through workflows quicker than ever*
- 8-core GPU with up to 6x faster graphics for graphics-intensive apps and games*
- 16-core Neural Engine for advanced machine learning
- 8GB of unified memory so everything you do is fast and fluid
Choose internal SSD capacity with both macOS and your expected model library in mind. A 256GB or 512GB drive may be enough for a small, carefully managed collection, while larger collections may call for a 1TB or 2TB configuration or optional external storage. External storage can expand space for model files or backups, but it does not increase the Mac’s unified memory.
When to consider the M5 Pro
The M5 Pro is the relevant alternative if the M6’s 32GB memory ceiling is too restrictive for your intended work. It can be configured with up to 64GB of unified memory and up to 8TB of internal SSD storage. Apple positions it for larger local AI models, but the published product information does not provide an independently verified M6-versus-M5 Pro model-fit comparison. Decide based on the memory and storage capacity you need, not an assumed model-size threshold.

What Apple’s performance claims do—and do not—tell you
Apple says the M6 Mac mini can run local models and on-device AI tasks. Its August 2026 announcement also claims “up to 4x faster AI performance” than the Mac mini with M4, and “up to 13.5x faster LLM prompt processing in LM Studio” than the Mac mini with M1, or up to 4.8x versus M4. These are Apple-reported maximum comparisons against named predecessor machines under its test conditions. They are not independent measurements or a prediction of generation speed, model fit, or responsiveness for your model, quantization, context, runtime version, or workload.
A separate 2025 preprint compared MLX, MLC-LLM, Ollama, llama.cpp, and PyTorch MPS using Qwen 2.5 models on a Mac Studio with an M2 Ultra and 192GB of unified memory. In that study’s tested settings, the runtimes differed in sustained generation throughput, time to first token, and ease of use. Because the test machine had a different chip and far more memory than an M6 mini, those results do not rank runtimes or forecast performance on this Mac.

How to prepare the Mac for offline use
Complete installation, downloads, and initial checks before disconnecting the network. Offline operation depends on having compatible model files on the Mac and using an application that can load those files locally.
- Choose the hardware and peripherals. Select unified memory and internal storage based on your intended workload and model library. Add a display, keyboard, or mouse only if you do not already have compatible ones. Apple lists HDMI, two front USB-C ports, three Thunderbolt 4 ports, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and configurable 2.5Gb or 10Gb Ethernet for the M6.
- Install a local inference application while online. LM Studio is one beginner-oriented option. Its documentation describes chatting with downloaded models, document chat/RAG, and local inference-server use without internet access once the required model files are present. Application features and behavior can change, so check the current LM Studio documentation and settings before relying on a particular offline workflow.
- Download the model files you intend to use. Use the application’s model catalogue or another compatible source while connected. Confirm that the files are stored locally and that your chosen application can load them. A model name alone does not guarantee compatibility: formats and runtime support matter.
- Run a basic prompt while online. Confirm that the model loads and produces a response before you depend on it offline. If you want document chat or retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), add a non-sensitive test document and verify that the selected application can process it.
- Disconnect both network paths and repeat the check. Turn off Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet, then retry the prompt and, if relevant, the document query. This checks your actual combination of app, model, and settings; it is a recommended validation step, not a claim that a specific setup has been tested here.
Which software route should you use?
Use an app for a simpler local workflow
An application such as LM Studio provides an interface for loading and chatting with local models. Its documentation says core functions including chat with a downloaded model, document chat/RAG, and local server use can work offline once the model is present. It also says documents used for RAG stay on the machine. Those statements describe the documented application behavior; they should not be generalized to every application, plugin, integration, update check, or configuration.

Use MLX if you are building a developer workflow
Apple’s MLX is an array framework for machine learning on Apple silicon, not a complete end-user chat application. You need an MLX-compatible inference tool and a supported model format to build a usable workflow. This path can suit developers who want to work closer to the framework, but it requires choosing and configuring the additional software.
Does local AI make the Mac completely private?
Local inference means the model runs on the Mac rather than sending the prompt to a remote model service. That narrows where inference and document processing happen, but it is not proof that the whole computer is offline or that every part of an app is private. Model downloads, software updates, telemetry, account sign-in, and connected services may still use the network unless you disable or otherwise control them.

- For offline use, test with Wi-Fi off and Ethernet unplugged, and confirm the specific tasks you need still work.
- Review the application’s network-dependent features, integrations, and account requirements instead of assuming all activity is local.
- If you enable a local inference server, keep it bound to localhost unless you deliberately need another device to connect and have put appropriate network controls in place. Do not expose an unauthenticated endpoint to a wider network.
A disconnected-network test can establish that a task works without a connection during that test. It does not prove that an application made no network requests before disconnection, that the system has no telemetry, or that the computer is air-gapped.
What to expect from the finished hub
With the software installed and model files downloaded, the Mac can serve as an always-available local inference machine, subject to the model’s memory needs and the application’s capabilities. Apple’s chief hardware officer, Johny Srouji, described the Mac mini in the August 25, 2026 announcement as “our most versatile Mac” and said it could be used as an “always-on agentic device.” That is Apple’s product characterization, not an independent assessment of a particular local AI workload.
