The secure way to use Ledger Wallet on a phone is to keep the private keys and recovery backup offline, initialize the Ledger hardware device yourself, pair it through the supported connection, and approve every address and transaction on the device screen. The phone app is an interface; it does not replace the hardware wallet.

Use Ledger Wallet, formerly called Ledger Live, only from Ledger’s official download page: https://www.ledger.com/ledger-live. Create the device PIN and Secret Recovery Phrase on the Ledger itself, never type the 24 words into the phone, and treat unexpected messages or “verification” requests as phishing.

What Ledger Wallet does on a phone

Ledger Wallet is a self-custody interface for managing accounts held by a Ledger hardware wallet. The private keys stay inside the device’s Secure Element. The mobile app can display balances, prepare transactions and broadcast them, but a transaction cannot execute until you review and physically approve it on the Ledger device.

This division matters because a phone can be lost, infected, replaced or connected to a malicious website. The app may be exposed to those conditions, while the signing key remains on the hardware. The protection only works if you keep the recovery phrase secret and verify what the device screen shows before approving anything.

What you need before setup

A genuine, untampered device

Obtain the Ledger hardware wallet from Ledger or an authorized, reputable seller. Ledger’s hardware guidance says to use reputable manufacturers or authorized resellers and to check that the package and hardware are sealed and tamper-proof. Do not initialize a device that arrives opened, altered, or with a recovery phrase already supplied. A legitimate device must generate its own phrase during your setup.

The Ledger Nano X is a suitable example for mobile use because it supports Bluetooth pairing. Exact model support, operating-system requirements and connection options can change, so check the current Ledger compatibility information for your device before beginning.

A compatible phone connection

Phone Supported connection described by Ledger Important condition
iPhone Bluetooth with a supported Ledger model such as Nano X iPhone pairing is Bluetooth-only in this setup
Android Bluetooth on supported models, or a wired USB OTG connection A wired connection requires a USB OTG data cable; a charge-only cable will not work

Keep the phone’s operating system, Ledger Wallet and the Ledger device software current. Outdated device apps or Ledger OS can prevent account operations or cause connection problems.

A private place for the recovery backup

Plan where you will write and store the device-generated Secret Recovery Phrase before you turn the Ledger on. Use paper or another offline medium that you can protect from fire, water, theft and casual viewing. Do not photograph the words, copy them into notes, save them in cloud storage, email them, or paste them into a password manager.

Install the official Ledger Wallet app

  1. Open Ledger’s official download page at https://www.ledger.com/ledger-live from a device you trust.
  2. Choose the mobile version for your iPhone or Android phone and install it through the platform’s normal app flow.
  3. Check the app name and publisher before opening it. Do not install an app reached through a pop-up, an unsolicited message, a search advertisement, or a link from someone claiming to be support.
  4. Launch Ledger Wallet and use its device-connection flow. The app should guide you to My Ledger, where you add and manage the hardware device.

The only official download location identified by Ledger is its own website. If an app or web page asks for your 24 words during installation, account recovery or “verification,” stop immediately; that is not a legitimate setup step.

Initialize the Ledger hardware wallet safely

1. Start with a new device

Connect or power on the Ledger and select the option to set up a new device, not to restore an existing wallet. Perform this process yourself while the device is in your possession. Never accept a PIN or recovery phrase that another person has chosen for you.

  • More than just crypto: confirm your device is authentic with Genuine Check, manage all your logins with Ledger Security Key, detect common scams with Transaction Check and more.

  • This is what security feels like: Ledger touchscreen signers all come with a private, offline, PIN-protected backup, Ledger Recovery Key, to never lose access to your assets.

2. Create the PIN on the Ledger

Use the device controls to create a PIN. Do not enter the PIN into the phone app or tell it to another person. The PIN protects access to the device when it is physically available; it is separate from the recovery phrase.

3. Let the device generate the Secret Recovery Phrase

The Ledger generates a 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase on its own screen. Write every word down in the displayed order, offline. When the device tests your backup, select the requested words on the Ledger itself so you know the copy is accurate.

Ledger’s instruction is absolute: never share the 24 words with anyone under any circumstances. No legitimate employee, app, website, support agent or transaction requires them. Anyone who obtains the phrase can derive the wallet’s accounts and control the assets, even if that person does not have your physical Ledger.

4. Store and inspect the backup

Keep the written phrase where only you, or the people you have deliberately designated in an inheritance plan, can access it. Do not leave it beside the device, in a desk drawer that visitors can open, or in a place that a phone camera or security camera can capture. Never enter the phrase into Ledger Wallet as part of ordinary pairing or account addition.

Pair the Ledger with your phone

iPhone: Bluetooth pairing

  1. Turn on Bluetooth in iPhone Settings and power on the Ledger.
  2. Open Ledger Wallet, go to My Ledger, and choose the option to add the device.
  3. Select the supported Ledger model and follow the in-app pairing prompt. A model such as Nano X uses Bluetooth for this mobile connection.
  4. Compare the pairing code shown in the app with the code displayed on the Ledger screen. Continue only when they match.
  5. Confirm the pairing on the Ledger itself. Do not approve a code you cannot see or one that changes unexpectedly.

Android: Bluetooth pairing

  1. Enable Bluetooth on the Android phone and turn on the Ledger.
  2. If Android requests location permission for Bluetooth discovery, grant it only if you are comfortable with the permission and are using the official app. Android may require this permission for nearby-device discovery.
  3. In Ledger Wallet, open My Ledger, select add device, and choose the Bluetooth connection.
  4. Compare the pairing codes on the phone and Ledger. Confirm on the hardware device only after the codes match.

Android: wired USB OTG pairing

  1. Use a USB OTG cable that supports data transfer and matches the phone and Ledger connectors.
  2. Connect the Ledger directly to the phone, then open Ledger Wallet and choose the wired device option.
  3. Unlock the Ledger when prompted and approve the connection on the hardware.
  4. If the phone only charges the Ledger or the app cannot detect it, replace the cable first. A charge-only cable cannot carry the data required for setup.

Install a blockchain app and add your first account

A Ledger device does not automatically contain every network app. Install the application for the network you intend to use, then add the corresponding account in Ledger Wallet.

  1. Unlock the Ledger with its PIN and connect it to Ledger Wallet.
  2. Open My Ledger in the app.
  3. Find the blockchain network you need and choose to install its device app. Keep the Ledger connected until installation finishes.
  4. Open Accounts and choose Add account.
  5. Select the network, unlock the Ledger when requested, and open that network’s app on the device.
  6. Follow the prompts to create or connect the account, then confirm the account details on the Ledger screen.

The account address is derived from the hardware wallet. Adding an account does not expose the private key to the phone; signing still occurs on the Ledger.

Verify addresses and transactions on the Ledger screen

Before receiving funds

  1. In Ledger Wallet, open the account and choose the receive option.
  2. Let the app display the address and keep the Ledger connected and unlocked.
  3. Open the network app on the Ledger if prompted.
  4. Compare the address shown in the phone app character by character with the address shown on the Ledger screen.
  5. Use the address only after the hardware display confirms it. If the two displays differ, reject the operation and investigate the phone or app.

Malware can alter an address displayed on a phone. The hardware screen is the check that tells you what address the device is actually using.

Before sending funds

  1. Enter the recipient, amount and network in Ledger Wallet.
  2. Review the destination address on the Ledger screen, not just the phone.
  3. Check the amount, network and fee. A correct address on the wrong network can still result in a failed or unrecoverable transfer.
  4. Approve on the Ledger only if you initiated the transaction and every detail is correct.
  5. Reject the request on the hardware if any detail is unfamiliar, changed, truncated, or inconsistent with your intention.

Ledger’s product guidance states that every transaction must be reviewed and physically approved on the Ledger before it executes. A phone notification, website prompt or customer-service message is not a substitute for that review.

Recognize the attacks that target mobile users

Fake support and recovery requests

Ledger will not ask for your 24-word phrase. Messages claiming that your account is suspended, your device is compromised, or your wallet must be “verified,” “secured” or “restored” are common phishing patterns. Do not reply, click the link, install software, or type the phrase into a form. Close the message and use the official app or Ledger website that you opened yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look-alike apps and websites

Criminals imitate wallet branding in app stores, search results and social-media messages. Download Ledger Wallet through Ledger’s official page, check the publisher, and avoid sideloaded packages. A page that asks for the recovery phrase before showing a balance is attempting to take control of the wallet, not repair it.

Unexpected NFTs and tokens

Unsolicited NFTs or tokens can contain links or instructions designed to lure you to a malicious site. Do not visit the attached site, sign a transaction to “claim” or “burn” the item, or connect the Ledger because a message says it is required. Ignore or hide unsolicited assets using the app’s normal controls.

Suspicious signing prompts

A connected website may ask you to sign a message or approve a transaction that appears unrelated to your task. Read the Ledger display carefully. Reject anything you did not initiate, even if the phone app labels it as a routine check.

What to do if the Ledger is lost or damaged

A replacement Ledger can restore access when you use the original Secret Recovery Phrase during the device’s restore process. The phrase, not the physical device, is the backup for the accounts derived from it. Because possession of the phrase grants control, treat any suspected exposure as an emergency rather than waiting for the old device to turn up.

If someone may have seen or copied the phrase, move assets to a newly initialized Ledger with a newly generated phrase as soon as you can do so safely. Do not tell support the old or new words. If the device is merely lost but the phrase remains secret, an attacker still needs the phrase to restore the accounts on another device.

Do not import a hot-wallet seed into a Ledger

Creating a Ledger from a seed that was previously used in a phone or browser hot wallet defeats a key security assumption: that the recovery secret was generated and kept inside a trusted hardware environment. A seed that has ever been typed into a phone, computer, screenshot, clipboard or cloud service may already be exposed. Initialize the Ledger as a new wallet and transfer assets to its newly generated accounts instead.

Keep the setup healthy after pairing

  • Install Ledger Wallet updates from the official distribution path and update the Ledger device software when the app presents a legitimate update.
  • Before updating, verify that you are using the genuine app and that you have your offline recovery backup available, without entering it into the app.
  • Keep the Ledger disconnected when you are not actively checking an address or approving a transaction.
  • Use a screen lock and current operating system on the phone, but do not treat phone security as a replacement for hardware verification.
  • Review account and transaction notifications independently; never approve an unexpected request simply because it appears in Ledger Wallet.

Troubleshoot common setup failures

The app cannot find the Ledger over Bluetooth

  • Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on both devices and that the Ledger is awake and unlocked.
  • Close and reopen Ledger Wallet, then retry from My Ledger.
  • Remove an incomplete phone pairing and start again so the codes can be compared afresh.
  • On Android, check whether the operating system requires location permission for Bluetooth discovery.
  • Keep the devices close together and disconnect the Ledger from another phone or computer.

The Android wired connection fails

  • Confirm that the cable is USB OTG-capable and supports data, not charging only.
  • Check that both ends fit securely and that the Ledger is unlocked.
  • Try the official app again after reconnecting; avoid untrusted adapter chains.

Account installation or addition is blocked

  • Update Ledger Wallet and the Ledger’s operating system through the genuine app.
  • Reconnect the device, unlock it, and open the correct blockchain app on the Ledger.
  • Make sure you selected the matching network in My Ledger and Accounts.
  • If an app or support message asks for the recovery phrase to fix the problem, stop; the phrase is never a troubleshooting credential.

The phone and Ledger show different details

Reject the operation immediately. Do not attempt to “try again” by approving the differing data. Disconnect the Ledger, close the app, and investigate whether you are using the genuine app and the intended account. For a receiving address, trust only a match confirmed on the Ledger screen.

Mobile setup checklist

  • Device came from Ledger or a reputable authorized seller and was sealed and untampered.
  • Ledger Wallet was downloaded from Ledger’s official website.
  • PIN was created on the Ledger, not supplied by another person.
  • Recovery phrase was generated by the Ledger and written offline.
  • Recovery phrase is not stored in a phone, computer, cloud account, photo, email or support chat.
  • iPhone uses Bluetooth with a supported model; Android uses supported Bluetooth or a data-capable USB OTG cable.
  • Pairing codes were compared on both screens and confirmed on the Ledger.
  • Correct blockchain app was installed and the account was added while the Ledger was unlocked.
  • Receiving addresses and sending details were checked on the Ledger screen.
  • Unexpected messages, NFTs and requests to verify or restore the wallet were ignored.
  • A hot-wallet seed was not imported into the Ledger.
  • Ledger Wallet and Ledger OS are current before transacting.

The secure operating rule

Use the phone for convenience and the Ledger for trust decisions. The phone can prepare and display an operation, but the hardware device must independently show the address or transaction you intend to use. Keep the 24-word backup offline and private, and treat any request for it as a theft attempt. Following those rules preserves the security model that makes a mobile-connected hardware wallet useful.
